CHRISTMAS ISLAND
On Christmas Island, I
landed in an airport smaller than the school hall
held a crab
shooed a crab off the road and out of the bus's way.
skipped stones
climbed onto a wavecut platform
stood on the base of a waterfall
saw caves, notches, stacks, and stumps in real life
had to check the sea water to be water and not blue food colouring
got as close as 5cm away from a thrush
caught a ladybug
plucked off leaves from plants and ate them as if they were chips
had phosphate in my hair
squished out ribbons of soil with bare hands
navigate our way through a forest with no marked routes
saw a natural spring
walked among corals
swam among corals
swam with fishes
had a non-canteen type of bird fly right above my head
had a crab crawl under my legs for shade
for the first time in my life.
I saw the most number of
playgrounds per square km
pinacle rocks
spiders in 1 square metre
giant clams in one area
and also the least number of cars on an island
In a week, I
had more than 1 picnic lunches
had more than 1 BBQ dinner
trekked so much in the forest.
And not to forget, the most beautiful of nature, I saw
the most beautiful sunset
the most beautiful night sky
the most beautiful beach
the most beautiful sea
and the most beautiful fishes.
