Mattel reports that BarbieGirls.com, its new social networking and virtual world website, has exceeded 4 million registered users, with an average of 45,000 new users signing up each day.  Targeted specifically to girls, the site launched in April 2007.  The news comes as Mattel releases the Barbie Girl MP3 player (512 MB, with space for a 2GB memory card), which is shaped like a fashion doll (with snap-on fashions and accessories) and acts also as a USB key that when connected to computer will unlock additional exclusive content on BarbieGirls.com.  Next Monday, August 13, Mattel will launch the Barbie Girls website in five more languages, including French, Spanish, Italian, German as well as Portuguese.

Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment will debut the Speed Racer video game, based on the live-action Speed Racer movie, first for the Wii and Nintendo DS simultaneous to the release of the movie on May 2008, and then for PlayStation 2 at the time of the DVD launch.  Developed for the Wii and PS2 by New Zealand based Sidhe Interactive, the game will feature "car-fu" action, which will represent the action style used in the movie.  To that end the movie's writer/directors the Wachowski brothers are participating in the development process, and their collaborator John Gaeta, Co-VFX Supervisor on the movie, is also working with Sidhe and WBIE.  Speed Racer is a Warner Bros. Pictures presentation in association with village Roadshow Pictures, of a Silver Pictures production.

Judge Tosses Calif. Video Game Law; Schwarzenegger to Appeal

San Francisco - After a federal judge on Monday ruled that a California state law banning the sale of violent video games to minors was unconstitutional, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger said he will appeal the ruling, Reuters reported.

After previously issuing a temporary injunction against the law, Judge Ronald Whyte issued a permanent order on Monday, citing similar rulings in other states.

“The evidence does not establish that video games, because of their interactive nature or otherwise, are any more harmful than violent television, movies, Internet sites or other speech-related exposures," Judge Whyte wrote in his decision.

"Although some reputable professional individuals and organizations have expressed particular concern about the interactive nature of video games, there is no generally accepted study that supports that concern." The video game industry praised the ruling.

"The ESA is pleased with today's permanent injunction ruling as it cements nationwide judicial consensus that our self-regulatory efforts work and attempts to regulate computer and video games are unconstitutional," said Dan Hewitt, director of media relations for the Entertainment Software Association.

Gov. Schwarzenegger will appeal the ruling to the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.
