Introducting Anna to her family

Announcement

Last night Anna slept in her bassinet. And the people rejoiced.

Anna is home

We were able to bring home Anna last night at about 5:00 PM. She didn't sleep a bunch the first night home, but she's slept a lot this morning. Right now she seems to be a bit nocturnal.

She had her first outing to the pediatrician's office. The doc described her as both 'feisty' and 'spicy'. We'd like to add 'hungry' and 'sweet'. In general, she just has three states right now: Feed, Sleep, Cry.

Anna is Born!

Anna Marie Van Hal was born at 3:40 PM today, December 11, 2007. She weighed 7 pounds 13 ounces, and was 19.5 inches long.

A Punctual Child

Last night the contractions got much stronger - strong enough that we called the doctor. Because of the interval of the contractions, the doctor asked us to come in. Unfortunately, Jen was only dialated to 2 centimeters, so they had her walk for a while, and then sent us home with some Ambien to help her sleep. She didn't sleep however. The contractions kept getting stronger and stronger. By about 3 AM, Jen woke me, and we started preparing to go to the hospital.

She just made it into her room and in her gown when her water broke. After a difficult couple of hours she was able to get an epidural.

So, right now, on Jen's actual due date, we'll probably have our baby! Jen's pretty calm right now. She's at about 5 centimeters. We're both a bit tired. Thankfully, we'll probably have a baby by the time the day is done.

Our first visit to Labor and Delivery

No, that graph isn't showing an earthquake in Michigan. Jen went in the the hospital because she bumped her belly, and we found out she was having contractions (which apparently look like earthquakes when drawn on charts)...quite a few of them in fact. Jen got to have a 24 hour personalized tour of the hospital as they monitored her contractions. They never did go away, but she didn't give birth (or look as though she would anytime soon), so she was sent home.

Our last trip as a family of two

In the middle of October we took a trip to North Palm Beach, Florida (thanks Mom and Dad Dutra for the use of the condo and car). We thought this would probably be our last trip as a family of two (thus the witty title).

It was quite a bit of fun. We didn't really plan a lot of activities, but that actually made it very nice and peaceful. We got to see cute baby turtles, and hear a baby that sounded like a gargling dinosaur (she really did).
