Pattern Review Weekend 2016: Chicago

Stephanie embodies the spirit of PR weekend!

Here are some personal and/or random notes from the weekend:
  • This was my 7th PR weekend in a row
  • My best advice to any PR weekend newbie is to take the week off afterward.  I've taken the week before off, the week after off, and no time before/after off, and honestly, taking the week after off is best.  Take the week off before, and you're madly sewing in your personal sweatshop before the conference, then attending the conference, and subsequently finding yourself back at your desk at work, wondering what just happened, why you are so tired, and what happened to your vacation time.  Taking the week afterward off is pure bliss.
  • I did not go crazy with fabric purchases this year.  My fabric closet was already bursting, I felt strangely overwhelmed in Vogue Fabrics, and I had left behind my PR shopping satchel in the hotel room.  I regained focus at Fishman's Fabrics, but still did not go crazy.
  • IMG_20160514_163645
  • I bought two pieces of leather at Fishman's Fabrics.  I'm targeting bags for both.
  • IMG_20160518_184423

  • IMG_20160518_184007
  • My only other purchase was 1 yard of this gold floral print denim from New Rainbow Fabrics.  This will be either a bag or a skirt.
  • I didn't buy anything else!  No patterns, no elastic, no notions.  That was it!  #restrained
  • I won second prize in the accessories contest for my neoprene backpack.  Yay!
  • IMG_20160518_184528

  • My prize was two pieces of fabric from Emma One Sock, pictured above. The curve ruler was a prize for Instagramming #prw2016 a lot.  And the patterned bag was our shopping satchel.
  • I sewed red pull-on jeans like a crazy person the week before the contest to wear during the shopping day.  Yay!
  • IMG_20160514_210942
  • I loved seeing my sewing friends again and meeting new ones!
  • Thank you to Deepika for founding PR and to all the volunteers for making it such a great weekend!  Read her recap here.
  • Next year PR weekend will be in NYC.  See you there?  I will lead a group through the Garment District!

Wore my PR weekend shopping day outfit today to visit my Great Aunt Iris in assisted living.  She's 100.  She never sewed, but she did crochet that blanket in the background!

Be well!

Pattern Review Weekend LA 2015 wrapup

action drama....
Like an early 80's action drama set in downtown LA....with fabric....

I just returned from PR Weekend in downtown LA, near the Fashion District.

(Tip:  Take the day after PR weekend off from work so you can write your recap and recover from the weekend.)

Thursday
Antoinette (ATP) and I flew in a day early for some pre-conference fun.

FIDM Scholarship Store was our first stop.   There is some great fabric here at $1 and $2 a yard and  fun necklaces for $4 and $6.  I love this place! They have sample garments too that we tried on.  We ran into fellow PR members Jeanette and Jo while we were there.

We then went to the FIDM Museum for the 2014 movie costume exhibit

And we took a detour from fabric shopping and fashion to attend the Hello Kitty 40th Anniversary exhibit at the Japanese American National Museum

Tons of HK merchandise was on display, including this Janome HK sewing machine

and this HK sewing kit

The HK bow crowns were given to each person visiting the exhibit; not everyone wore theirs.

Thursday night at the hotel lobby ATP spotted Rod Stewart and made eye contact; I only saw the back of his head as he meandered out onto the street...

Friday
The conference got into full swing with the shopping day as ~70 of us were unleashed in the Fashion District.  We broke off into many groups so we had flexibility as far as which stores to go to.

Tip:  Wear comfy shoes or sneakers; you're on your feet all day!

Shopping at Michael Levine Loft ($3 a pound fabric--really really good fabric too--yes, by the pound not by the yard).
20150424_100150
More of the scene at Michael Levine Loft.  Paw through boxes of fabric.  You don't have to take the whole piece; you can cut it down yourself if you wish, or ask the cashier to cut it for you.    There are also rolls of fabric on the sides of the store that are sorted by color.  All of it is $3 a pound usually but because we were there for PR weekend we got 20% off of that!  Thanks Michael Levine Loft!

Love the random thread stuck to my pants.
Also love the cashier; he was there in 2013 and is super super nice.

I bought exactly 7 pounds of fabric.

Next we headed across the street to the main Michael Levine store

Me, Anne, and the Wall of Locked Up Liberty  (I understand why it is locked up ($$$$), but it's ironic that fabric named Liberty is under lock and key.)

Me and Jacqui--we first met at PR weekend in 2010 in Philly and have shopped together ever since.  Love her contrast trim on her red shirt--her binding was absolutely perfect!!

ATP was next to Michael from Project Runway in the checkout line

On the street.  This gives you a sense of what the Fashion District shopping looks like-- fabric stores on street level with some of their fabrics on display outside (multiply this picture by, say, 100).  Having been to NYC Garment District many times and LA Fashion District twice, I'd say that it feels like there are more fabric and trim stores in LA, though I don't know if that is true.

I have my Jalie shrug on upside down it the above picture, ha ha ha ha ha

Zippers at Zip Up Zipper

There were buses to take us to Mood and a fabric store appropriately called The Fabric Store about 8 miles away from the Fashion District, but streets were blocked off for a commemoration event all day so we wound up having only 30 minutes to shop at Mood LA, not enough time for me to buy fabric.
20150424_152733
Unlike the NYC branch of Mood, the Mood LA store is all on one level.  Above is one half of the Mood LA store.

Bernina sponsored a party Friday night that included the pattern swap (so.many.patterns.) and the handbag contest.   I entered the handbag contest with my V6072 backpack.  I wish I took a picture of the winning backpack; it was the Vogue frog backpack and her prize was a Bernina serger.

Saturday
Deepika, me and dots
PR Founder Deepika and I wore our dots for Saturday morning.

Saturday was the learning day with Lynda Maynard.  Roseana and Theresa were totally brave to stand in their foundation garments for about an hour each while Lynda and her volunteers sliced and diced their respective sheath dress and jacket muslins to get a perfect fit.  I found it quite interesting because it's a totally different way to fit a garment compared to Joi Mahon's method, but it appears to achieve the same results.

20150425_111402
The room felt like a movie set.
Here's the view from the back of the room while Lynda shows how to make the changes to the flat pattern, post fitting the muslin.  Some of the leftover patterns are shown...there were a LOT of leftover patterns!

In the afternoon, ATP, Anne and I skipped couture techniques to return to the Fashion District to buy elastic at Button and Trim Expo, only to find out that it is closed on Saturdays, massive heaving sigh!
(Tip:  Always always always check store days and hours!!!)

I don't know for sure but I felt that this store, which I visited in Nov 2013 with Rachel and Jeanette, would have wide elastic in many colors that I could use for my exposed waistband on the Mimi G pants.

So we went to three other trim stores instead and the last one, Target Trim, had the BEST selection of elastic I was looking for, but I like the layout of Button and Trim Expo better.

It started raining on the way back, so we took shelter in the FIDM Scholarship Store, where we ran into Jacqui.

Tip:  Bring your shopping bag so you can consolidate your purchases; Jacqui's has hers from an earlier PR weekend.

Dinner was at a nearby Mexican restaurant but I didn't take pictures.

Sunday
Some folks stayed on Sunday for brunch and more fabric shopping, but I left to return back to NJ.

Outfit roundup:

PR Weekend 2014 Austin Recap

Before I dive into the recap, I want to say thank you, from me and my dad, for all your kind and supportive comments on my last post about my mom.  We both appreciate it.

At TexStyles with Antoinette

Last Wednesday I flew to Austin for PR Weekend.  This was my 5th one so it felt like an anniversary of sorts.  5 years ago I attended PR weekend 2010 in Philly not knowing anyone personally--just a few sewists whose blogs I read but who mostly didn't know me.  Also my bus buddy was Elaine, who was the first blog reader of mine who I met in person and didn't personally know.  This year, I knew probably a third of attendees!

Thursday (pre-PR weekend)

Antoinette (ATP) lives in Austin so she shuttled us around.  Thank you ATP for picking me up at the airport and driving me back to the airport and for driving me to many places in between!  It was great to spend so much time with you!

PR fun fact:  ATP was the first person to ever comment on one of my pattern reviews!!!  How about that? And we became good sewing friends.  Thanks PR!

First we fueled up then headed over to Stitch Lab and TexStyles for some pre-PR weekend fabric shopping.

At TexStyles--love all their knits and how their store is arranged by color!  It is really hard not to buy the whole store...I cut myself off after $170....

That night a whole bunch of us went to Austin Fashion Week.  Thursday night had, gosh, 8 shows?  of mostly local designers.

Friday
Friday morning PR weekend officially began at the Palm Door.

ATP, Daniel Esquivel, and me
Project Runway alum and Austinite Daniel Esquivel talked about his life before, during and after Project Runway on Saturday morning.  Such a sweet man.

That afternoon we learned about organizing your fabric room from Jennifer Lava, professional organizer.

Connie and me at the Palm Door

That evening we went to the Palm Door for some delicious pre-runway dinner.  The food was super super tasty!!!

My camera couldn't really handle the lighting of the fashion show but there are more pix of it in the PR weekend Flickr group.  Friday night was Project Runway All-Stars, where 6 of the PR folks presented collections....and the designers were actually there!!

Saturday
Two buses carted PR members around for shopping and hands-on workshop day.
Since ATP lives in Austin and we were taking the bra workshop, Roseana asked if ATP could drive me around all day.  This meant our day was a little different in parts than everyone else's. Initially though we headed to the Austin Fabric Co-op like those in bus group #1.

Lisette and Sharon
Lisette and Sharon--finally met Sharon after reading her blog since Nov 2011! I "met" her online because we both tweeted during PR Day in 2011, only I was at the celebration in Austin and she was leading the one in Minneapolis, and now I finally got to meet her in real life!. I met Lisette at PR weekend in 2010 in Philly.
Rachel and me
Rachel was my "bus buddy" at PR weekend Chicago in 2011 where I first met her. Then she drove me around LA last fall for a one day tour of LA fabric.

My haul from Austin Fabric Co-op, lots of textures in there even though it's hard to tell!

ATP, me and the Other Leslie in Austin
You see the PRW bags we're holding?  The co-op had printed them especially for our purchases!

We got to meet up with the other Leslie in Austin.  She wasn't able to register for the weekend but we were able to meet up independently on Saturday morning at the Co-op.  I met the other Leslie at PR Day in Austin in Nov 2011 and have been reading her blog ever since.  I always learn something new when I read her blog!

The three of us headed over to Form and Fabric, a new store in town that is so new it hasn't officially opened yet but the owner opened to us for the weekend!

Saturday afternoon was the bra making workshop!!

Look!  I made half of a bra!!!

A big thanks to Megan Summerville who taught the bra making workshop.  She is a lingerie designer and she won the AFW Trailblazer award later that night.

Then it was on to Austin Cake Ball.  I think the chocolate was my favorite, and the chocolate mint was a close second.

And then on to the big PR Saturday night party.  It featured food sponsored by Bernina (and a room where you could try out the Berninas).  Plus there was a raffle of many sponsor giveaways, like Angela Wolf patterns, Jalie patterns, the Seam Allowance curve ruler, Fashion Sewing Supply interfacing and more!

The swag bag was also the best EVER: Dear + Doe pattern, StyleArc pattern, a yard of fabric from TexStyles courtesy of Kellie, and more!  That huge zipper pouch from Form and Fabric is really super amazing!

Oh, and there were sewing tattoos.

A big thank you to Leslie and Roseana for organizing such a super weekend, and to Deepika as always for founding PR!  I'm not sure how I left without a picture with the three of you but I did and I'm sorry for it!!

Next year PR weekend is in LA at the end of April!!!!!  Start planning for it now!!!  Will you be there?
