Food For Thought

Spent the morning accompanying my parents to run their errands, also to spend some time with them before i leave...so i'm feeling rather tired now. But i'm not that great with naps so now i'm left with this tiredness but inability to sleep. Sighs.

Oh! I had dinner at this incredible place last night with Carmen and Gladys. We just fell in love with the place! The concept behind it was admirable, the interior decorations were simple and practical, the food was great, but service was so-so, due to some slip-ups, but they corrected it. The company made it all even better (:

Food For Thought: good food for a good cause.

Why a liberal arts education is useful

I came across this article a while back and it speaks out to me. In a way, much of society, especially in Singapore/Asian culture, expects you to specialize in a certain profession that will allow you to work in that field so as to guarantee one's rice bowl. Engineers, Accountants, Doctors, Lawyers...

An arts degree doesn't always get its deserved recognition. (what we call a Bachelor of Arts is actually considered a liberal arts education in the American system) So perhaps this might be a refreshing point of view, and a reminder to why liberal arts education exists.

From the Think-Tank section of Straits Times Review, 11 August 2010, Singapore:

Why a liberal arts education is useful

By Kishore Mahbubani

ONE of the most stupid decisions I have made in my life also turned out to be one of the wisest decisions of my life. What was my most stupid decision? It was to give up studying economics and sociology at the National University of Singapore (NUS), repeat a year and start studying philosophy as a single subject. Friends and family thought I was committing an act of total folly by giving up one year of income and graduating a year later, and studying an impractical and 'useless' subject.

Feeling orange

I actually had another blog post in mind but since today's a sunday, i decided not to have anything too serious. The weather has been a bit mad these days, which is causing my nose to be ultra sensitive to everything. argh.

I bought this orange top from nicolethen boutique which arrived a couple of days ago. and i'm really happy with it!

I haven't got the chance to wear it yet, since it's more of a formal/office wear. But it will definitely come in handy soon, especially since i'll be going to Istanbul, Turkey, for the NATO Afghan Students Forum V in October! I'm really looking forward to that. It's going to be an eye-opener, being able to meet and work with students from Afghanistan, Pakistan and other Central Asian countries. Anyhow, that is not the main point, i will blog more about it when the time comes.
The online boutique owner: Nicole Then, from Singapore. Her blog's always an enjoyment to read (: and i am so tempted to buy more stuff from her shop. i'm eyeing a few items actually... But i'm not exactly feeling very rich now, so i should not give in to temptations. I've been in such a shopping mood lately.

On another note, today's the first time i failed miserably at baking :( I threw the whole thing out. Then again, i should be given some leeway since i used a convection roaster instead of an oven right. Sighs. Guess there's always a first for everything. i find it hard to say 'i failed'...and sometimes i have such high expectations of myself that i get upset easily too. That's something i need to fix.

about time to get ready. dinner with char and jerm tonight.

bisous!

suivez votre passion...

Today is one of those days i will miss when i leave for Paris in about 2 weeks time...

Anyway, i saw this video a couple of days ago and thought i'd share it.
Presenting...Tavi Gevinson from Style Rookie

i'm simply amazed at her eye for fashion, creativity and detail. she's just 14, and this is her styling her first photoshoot for blackbook magazine, which is an american mag. she's just started high school but has already started to make her mark in the fashion industry. not an easy feat. she's a source of inspiration and motivation.

don't be afraid to follow your passion.

bisous!

fresh cuppa coffee

and upsid3down.blogspot.com is back!
spent 2 whole afternoons working on html, and i'm happy with it! for now at least.
feels strange to be blogging on blogspot again after like 4 months.

anyway, had brunch with melly at macs yesterday. finally satisfied my hotcakes craving.
and i did a bit of shopping too.

new earphones from bloom, in a pretty box! recommended by melly. it costs about $39 from nubox. was deciding between this and another design. this is probably the only inner-ear earphones that actually fits my ear. it's meant for ladies so it is made slightly smaller. but honestly, i just really like the pretty box (:

and monopoly deal! recent night out with the girls at timbre included playing several rounds of monopoly deal and i'm hooked..

as always, with a new layout on my blog, i'll be blogging pretty often. but this time around, i'm hoping to actually keep it up. shall see how we go.

as for today...
to do:
1. pack wardrobe
2. unpack luggage

let's not try to be overambitious right. i think those 2 should suffice for today.

bisous!
