Last week my baby turned 7 and we celebrated it in true Black fashion.
First, Travis and I went to Walmart to get presents, food, and cake for Emma's birthday. Unfortunately, when it came time to pay for the items our payment method was declined and when we pooled our cash found we could only pay for about half of it. So, we bought what we could and put the rest back. Later, when Celeste and Ashley got home, we had Ashley quickly drive Celeste to the bank to cash her paycheck and then run to the store to buy a birthday cake with the promise of paying her back later (I didn't have time to bake one.)
Per Emma's request her birthday dinner consisted of grilled cheese sandwiches and chicken noodle soup. She has informed me that she wants this to be her birthday dinner forever. After dinner Emma opened her presents and was thrilled to get sidewalk chalk, a jump rope, a frisbee, and some Moxie dolls.
At this point I suggested we all go outside and play with Emma's sidewalk chalk. However, the drawing of cows, hearts, and rainbows soon turned to the drawing of chalk outlines of the whole family.
When it got too cold and dark we went inside to sing happy birthday, eat birthday cake, and watch a movie. Emma really wanted to see The Tooth Fairy. Of course we had no money to rent a video, so Travis quickly downloaded a pirated version which we watched as a family. (Travis and I REALLY weren't excited about watching it, but fortunately it actually had several funny parts and was bearable.)
We have promised Emma a friend party, but that's going to have to wait until we get more money. Emma loved her birthday and the family has decided that playing with sidewalk chalk is a great family activity.
