Head Wounds

>> Monday, May 10, 2010

Do you remember when I told you about Hannah getting second degree burns at her friend's house? Well, this friend has struck again. Today, during last recess, this friend dropped Hannah on her head momentarily knocking her unconscious. We went to the dr's tonight and they said it looks like a minor concussion. I think she's grounded from playing with this friend for life.

A Black Family Birthday

>> Friday, May 7, 2010

Last week my baby turned 7 and we celebrated it in true Black fashion.

First, Travis and I went to Walmart to get presents, food, and cake for Emma's birthday. Unfortunately, when it came time to pay for the items our payment method was declined and when we pooled our cash found we could only pay for about half of it. So, we bought what we could and put the rest back. Later, when Celeste and Ashley got home, we had Ashley quickly drive Celeste to the bank to cash her paycheck and then run to the store to buy a birthday cake with the promise of paying her back later (I didn't have time to bake one.)

Per Emma's request her birthday dinner consisted of grilled cheese sandwiches and chicken noodle soup. She has informed me that she wants this to be her birthday dinner forever. After dinner Emma opened her presents and was thrilled to get sidewalk chalk, a jump rope, a frisbee, and some Moxie dolls.

At this point I suggested we all go outside and play with Emma's sidewalk chalk. However, the drawing of cows, hearts, and rainbows soon turned to the drawing of chalk outlines of the whole family.

When it got too cold and dark we went inside to sing happy birthday, eat birthday cake, and watch a movie. Emma really wanted to see The Tooth Fairy. Of course we had no money to rent a video, so Travis quickly downloaded a pirated version which we watched as a family. (Travis and I REALLY weren't excited about watching it, but fortunately it actually had several funny parts and was bearable.)

We have promised Emma a friend party, but that's going to have to wait until we get more money. Emma loved her birthday and the family has decided that playing with sidewalk chalk is a great family activity.

Spring Piano Concert

>> Monday, May 3, 2010

Celeste and Hannah recently had their spring piano recital. I thought they both did a great job (as did Amanda and Chelsie who were also there)! Their teacher did say that Hannah needed some extra practice before the recital, so I had Celeste help her practice. It actually worked out pretty well. Hannah usually freaks out when I try to help, but she cooperated with Celeste. I guess helping Hannah will now be Celeste's job. Hopefully next year the teacher can find room for Emma too.

Try to ignore the little boy who wouldn't stop getting in the way of the camera during Celeste's performance.

Budgeting

I'm trying to revamp my budget and I can't decide how much is a reasonable amount to allot for certain categories. So, I'm asking everyone to please respond and tell me how much you budget (either weekly or monthly) for the following items. I want real amounts, the amount you actually spend. Not how much you think you should spend! I guess you can give me both amounts if you want -- real and actual (if you're willing to own up to it).

Household (food, soap, and toilet paper)
Dining Out
Entertainment
Clothing
Holidays (birthdays, christmas)
Miscellaneous Expenses (school pictures, library fines, broken blender, ...)
And anything else you may want to include

Thanks!!
