Bug catching

Today the kids and I spent the morning making a bug catcher. Maddie is still our little entomologist and loves going on bug catching expeditions. The first step was to nail the boards together. She did a great job with the hammer. After the wood was assembled, it was time to tie a string handle. Next step: mesh, then a door. Maddie's favorite part of the process was painting the new catcher. We used our books about bugs as inspiration. After the paint was dry she went out on a bug hunt. We'll let you know what new "pets," as she refers to them, we find. What a fun first day alone with the kids. Matt started school today. It has been a wonderful season of all of us together. The day was not the same without him. We have definitely been spoiled. But I know that God has special plans in mind for each of us and I am excited to have some time to devote all my attention on the kids.

Kertis Trip to DC

Today we are running a 2 for 1 blog special. Actually, we have just gotten so many good pictures recently, that we can't keep up with the blogs. So today we are doing 2. The first is some great pics of the Kertis Family Visit. Mom and Dad Kertis came for a visit this past weekend and as you can see, we all had a great time. The weather was great and the kids were happy to see the grandparents. The extra hands were much appreciated as we put the finishing touches on the move in. It was also a great blow off of steam before the big first day of school arrives. God really has blessed us with this house. The pictures below show a game of wiffle ball that PapPap initiated. We used sidewalk chalk to draw home plate and the kids took their best shots. Between bike riding and big wheeling, it was a great game. Now on to the next blog, that will actually show up as the most recent blog...

Trip to the National Zoo

We are learning alot about the culture of the DC area. Tip number 1: Go to the National Zoo on a day where the threat of rain is 60% or greater. Sounds crazy (and when Matt suggested the idea I was quietly wondering if it was going to be a successful visit) but it was a wonderful day. The crowds were minimal (all the smart people stayed home), and we all had a blast. The kids were amazed at the exhibits and it was a great chance to teach them about nature and creation. Maddie's favorite animal was the chamelion shown below and Michael's favorite was the elephant. We hope to take that trip many times while we are here...maybe with some of you.

New House Fun

New house pictures! We spent the day outside. The sun was shining and it was a beautiful family day. The kids are enjoying having a quiet cul-de-sac to ride bikes. The back deck is becoming our new backyard. They have been playing in the sand table, catching bugs, and jumping off the play castle. All in all we have found this to be a very family friendly home...now we can't wait till it feels like "home". That's the part that takes time. We are meeting the neighborhood and they are a diverse bunch. We have a family from El Salvador on the corner, a Korean family across from them, a Retired Navy pharmacist across from us, and a family from the Middle East next door. Everyone is friendly and helpful. We have been invited to a barbeque already.
Tonight we drive to Sterling, VA to see Bob and Claire Bolha. Good OCF friends from Wright-Pat. Our 3 can play with their 5 kids. Get ready for some high energy fun. Well, that is all for now. The house is ready to receive visitors. Make your reservations now. Remember, we are only going to be here for a year! Love you all.

Kertis Visit

En route to DC we stopped in Pennsylvania to see my family. We conveniently left Lillian and Michael in the care of my mother and sister. So on Monday the 8th of May Matt, Madeline and myself went to Silver Spring to get the keys to our new home. That first night we had furniture but opted to sleep in the house. All three of us sharing an air mattress and a blanket. It will be a fun memory but I can't say we slept that well. The next morning I drove around the beltway and dropped Maddie off at our good friends the Brown's . The moving truck arrived at about 11a.m. Al, Bud and Bill made a good team of movers and our stuff was unloaded by about 8:30 PM. We began that night opening the boxes. Thankfully we had the beds ready to go and slept comfortably that night. Wednesday morning began with setting up the kitchen. We worked until about 3 in the afternoon and then headed back up to PA to get the kiddos. Our schedule was dictated by the much anticipated LOST episode. We had to leave in time to miss rush hour and be at my parents in time for the show. The following pics were taken during the second half of the visit May 10-14.
We were able to participate in the community garage sale over the weekend. It was nice to unload more of our stuff. Madeline was quite the salesgirl. Grandma had batches of fresh baked yummies for her to sell. She then branched out into selling her original drawings. She sold 6 at 10 cents a pieces to garage sale customers.
Pap had just come home from a week long fishing trip. He was greeted eagerly by grandchildren who had one question on their minds "Pap, when are you going to make fudge?" They did get their special homemade treat soon after. Michael loves hanging out with his Pap. Though I am not sure how Pap was able to fall asleep with an active preschooler on his lap.
Gram and Pap bought Michael a new trike with a wagon. The kids had a blast riding up and down the Cul-de-sac in front their grandparents house. Maddie as you can see did most of the work. Lily had a great time with cousin Natalie. In the picture, Aunt Jeni was trying to encourage Lily to stay on her feet. She does not have to much motivation to stay vertical but having her cousin around was helpful and a lot of fun. It is going to be great having family so accessible. We are now back in our house and becoming acclimated to our new neighborhood. We will be updating again soon with new pics.

Move Out Day

Well, the day finally came...moving out. The kids went to base childcare and the packers came. We were so blessed to have a family team that treated our stuff with care and a great moving team on the second day. It really makes you take stock in what's important when you see all your worldly belongings packed up on a truck. You look around at your family and say...this is all I truly need. Having said that, we were very greatful when all of our stuff arrived in MD in one piece. One lamp was lost to the "moving" gods, but that was a small price. We are well on our way to unpacking. We have met some neighbors (I already had to borrow a socket set). They seem extremely nice. The neighborhood is quite with lots of kids. Some woods behind the houses seem like a very popular play area. Keep us in your prayers as we try to settle in. We miss everyone so much already. OCF and the Grace Community family was such a huge blessing. You really showed us the body of Christ. God bless...more later
