Growing up road trips went a little like this:
Dad drove... mom sat in front seat of the car...a big cooler sat in between them...and all of us kids sat in the back and whined "how much longer? (my dad always answered something about the 7 seas...random!) OR can I have a snack??" etc. etc.
And it has pretty much stayed the same for our girls (however modern technology with DVD players and Ipods has sure helped)..
So last year when I was gearing up to do my very first SOLO road trip with the girls I was a little stressed...how was I going to handle getting them a snack and a drink and drive...I can barely drive as it is...
So I came up with an idea...put them in charge of themselves...
I packed them a goody bag...one or two of their favorite candies, some goldfish, cheez-its etc...and a bottle of water with their name on it...and I gave it to them while we were still sitting in the garage. I explained to them that this was it...eat it/drink it as FAST or as SLOW as they want but that that was ALL they were getting for the WHOLE trip (I meant the whole way there and I was planning on restocking in California...but they thought I meant roundtrip so even better)...
I was SHOCKED...they almost all came home with FULL treat bags. They got so scared they were going to run out that they never ate any!! And no one asked for a single treat the whole time because they knew where to find one!
So I thought I would try it again this year for my solo trip to Cali--and it worked like a charm!! However Ty made them buy their candy with their own money--EVEN BETTER!! And this is just some of what was left over...they didn't even eat half of what they brought...probably the equivalent of one movie size box! Not too bad for a 5 day road trip!!
