Tips from our MASTER =)

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Some shooting tips for Poplens outing this Sat, 251008.

1) try shooting w/o using flash to avoid harsh light and provoke the hawker.
pump-up the ISO to 800/1600/3200 and shoot with big aperture 2.8/2.0/1.4

2) if u use a flash, can try slow shutter to show movement ( flash-n-blurr )
to show a sense of urgency of the hawker.

3) shoot when the hawkers are doing chores, more candid when they are pre-occupied with things.

4) make sure u have a various angles covered.. Etc wide, mid-range and zoom-in.

5) Observe what is happening , think thru than shoot.

6) Be careful not to block the passage way of the hawker transporting vege.

Good luck and have fun.

Cheers,
Ray

Mirror of email update for this week:
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hi everyone,

Point 1: I have to take attendance for the upcoming TXY internal camp.

Venue: Camp Christine (Jalan Bhatera area)
Date: 21st to 24th Dec 2008
Description: Stay over camp. LOTS of fun and games. It is IMHO the most happening TXY activity of the year. All TXY members will play as a whole, so we are not restricted to the "yings" or SYD alone.
Camp fee: $15 per person.

2 SYD members will be chosen to cover the event as shooters. I will contact them in due time. The rest, you will be a camp member and just concentrate on having fun =)

Point 2: Poplens outing this Sat, 251008

Venue: Wholesale market, Pasir Panjang
Time: 0830 - 1030++
Assembly point: To be confirmed
Description: This will mainly be a walkabout shoot to compile a set of photos depicting where most of our vegetables come from. Focus is on the hustle and bustle of vegetable sale and trading going on at the market.

Please reply ASAP to this email by Thursday night! Reply is compulsory! In your reply, please state:
1) Whether you are attending the TXY internal camp
2) Whether you will be free to attend the walkabout shoot this Sat

Regards,
Wangwei

Due to underwhelming response, the gallery hopping trip has been cancelled. Ouyang and me will still be heading for the exhibitions, so if anyone of uall suddenly feels bored and want to join us, just give any one of us a call =)

Hi everyone,

Apologies for the late update. It's been a busy start to the week for me ;P

Anyway, there are basically 2 key points for this update:

Point 1 Singapore International Photography Festival
There are many exciting photography activities taking place this month. Attached is a guide to the festival. One can visit their official website (www.sipf.sg) as well. Basically there are numerous exhibitions going on at different regions of SG, most of them free admission. There are also workshops which you can sign up for.

This Saturday we will be organising a gallery hopping activity to tour the many exhibitions available. We will basically focus on National Museum of Singapore as well as Old School at Mount Sophia. We will also consider paying admission fees for the better exhibitions, depending on the number of people signing up =) Time will be tentatively in the afternoon, meeting at Dhoby Ghaut MRT at 1.30pm. We will browse as many galleries as time permits, and we aim to end before 5.30pm. Interested? Pls state ur attendance over at this thread in the forum.

Point 2: Chalet has been booked, 9th to 12th Dec
Just a re-iteration of my previous email should you missed it, we have already booked the chalet, PA holiday chalets, next to Pasir Ris beach park. Date is 9th to 12th Dec. So please try to make it. We will have another attendance taking when the date draws near to facilitate logistics and activity planning. So try to keep the dates free!

That's all for now. No need to reply to this email, but do sign up for the gallery hopping this Sat if you are interested/free!

Regards,
Wangwei

Hi Everyone,

We managed to book the PA Holiday Chalets. It is basically a 3 room flat very near the Pasir Ris beach park. For more info, one can visit: http://www.livelife.ecitizen.gov.sg/recreation/pa/hcr_PA.asp

Apologies to the last minute changes in dates and locations. In fact, the 9th to 12th date also differs from the 8th to 10th that I contacted you about. Allow me to explain:

Our initial plan of holding the activities in Jeffery's hostel room in NTU has been called off because he made a last minute decision to move out. Being left without a location to hold our chalet, and 12th to 14th being a super-peak period, we had to change our dates.

We narrowed our search to either DowntownEast, or the PA holiday chalet. DTE, while available on 8th to 10th, costs much higher and as everyone know, is nothing more than a box. PA chalet, on the other hand, is a 3 room chalet with a hall and 2 bedrooms, and costs much cheaper. It was only available on 2 - 5th when i last checked, but most people reflected that they prefer the 8th to 10th. We were eventually lucky enough to find a vacancy from 9th to 12th, so I made the decision to book the unit without everyone else's consent. Hopefully most of you can make it, since it is within the same week.

The date is 9th to 12th, but we can only check in at 4pm on 9th, and check out by 9am on 12th. So it is essentially a 3D3N period. Details of activities have not been planned yet, so we will let everyone know as the date draws near. Keep up the discussion over at the forum as well =)

That's all for now. I hope everyone will look forward to this chalet!

Regards,
Wangwei

Changes to chalet date

Due to some last minute changes, Jeffery's hostel room is out. We are in the process of booking the PA chalets, but only the 8th to 11th slot (2 room) and 9th to 12th slot (3 room) are available. We will most likely proceed to book the 3 room flats.

Anyone of you who's parents are PA staff? Can book for a discount!

Mirror from this week's updates:

-------------------------------------------------------------
Greetings,

Main point remains to be the SYD chalet at the end of the year. Here are the finalised details:

Date: 12-14th Dec

Location: NTU hostel (jeffery and janson's room). We will book the PA holiday flats in Pasir Ris should we receive overwhelming response. (let us know if you know of anyone who's a member)

Activities: Have fun! Of course we will be sharing a few photography tips as well. If there's anything you want to learn or contribute, please voice your suggestions in the forum!

Attendance: Apparently some people either refuses to check their mailboxes, or just don't have the courtesy to reply when told to do so. We are going to call those who haven't respond to ask them how's life on mars. But to all those who have responded, THANK YOU! We have about 10 members who will be attending so far.

There will be no official activities this weekend.

Regards,
Wangwei

Photos essays, calling it your own.

Just sharing a few insights gained from the "noise singapore" talk yesterday. Not so much about technical skills and equipment, but more on what makes a truly unique photo essay.

It's not about some topic you suddenly thought about and go shoot. It's not about a compilation of photos you happen to capture while you were at some event, some country, or some holiday trip. It is about something you know, something close to you, something you might feel strongly for.

Quoting a few examples:
1. Taxi driver - he made his back seat into a mini studio, and photographs his passengers. The result is a compilation of many distinct, unique individuals that reflected the diversity of the population he resides in.

2. Pilot - from the same angle through his cockpit, he shoots the many different scenes from different countries he has flown to. The result is a set of wonderful scenery, each framed by that same cockpit window which he is truly familiar with.

These examples really urges us to look back at our own life. What is truly your own experience? You will most probably never out-fame Ansel Adams in landscape photography, ditto in different fields like photojournalism, sports, fashion, portraiture, and wedding photography. Technically correct photographs are so easy to create with the slew of new technology we have today, and will have in the days to come.

I'm not saying that the next 镜看 or Poplens would require essays of such quality. These are just some ideas that one could think about in your free time.
