The last photo from 2007

It started to snow this morning. When I left home for a walk up to the old tree the snow had turned to sleet. Now the sky is grey and were expecting more of the same for the rest of the day. See you in 2008!

Arson Attack

For a week now, youngsters with fireworks (you have to be eighteen to buy them), have been terrorising the country. Shooting at people, buses, subway stations, houses, and whatever they can really. In Huddinge, one house was burned down and the owner ended up in hospital with a heart attack. All she could save was an empty hand bag. Here in Jordbro it looks like they tried to burn down a storage unit. Happy New Year!

The old farm

Three old buildings at the recreational area Lake Rudan in Handen. Known as ekonomibyggnader, or different types of farm buildings. These were used in the washing industry that started 100 years ago. The road between the two nearest buildings leads up to the little mansion that is 300 years old. Back then there was a farm here. What you don't see are the big barns. The old Stone Bridge

The oldest stone bridge in Haninge. The road here at Rudan in Handen was known as Runstensvägen, or Rune Stone Road. It dates back to the Viking era. Going south, the road continued to Västerhaninge where it became Häradsvägen at the Västerhaninge Parsonage Estate. From there the road continued to Tungelsta on what we today call Skogsekebyvägen. Nature's Art

I found a very cool ice formation on the partly frozen Lower Lake Rudan in Handen yesterday. The stripes in the background are reflected birch trees. Bigger photo.

The big window at City Hall in Handen.I have photographed it before, but figured it would look different during Christmas. I can see eight light candelabras.

Lake reflection

Visiting the Lakes at Rudan in Handen. Today a popular recreational area year round. With many old buildings like this one. Across the water, you will find the mansion, a stone cellar and a laundry building.They all belonged to a 300 year old farm.The road in the area and the stone bridge (oldest in Haninge), are very old, they pre-date the Nynäs road between Stockholm and Nynäshamn.

Walking on Thin Ice

A new prefab house next to an older building at Ålsta. One of the building sites around Haninge that I try to follow.I didnt see the big crane they normally use, but maybe they don't need it for the one storey houses. Bigger photo.

Cold and frosty today. No one around as I walked up to the old tree. If you have a few hours, why not sit back and enjoy the slideshow!

The Tower

A sudden change in the weather, again. After the snow disappeared there's been a few warm weeks, but with a grey sky. Then we had one day with a blue sky. Then came the cold. Still with a grey sky. Took this photo in the park. Minus 5 C. Frosty. The sculpture is called The Tower, made by Jan Håfström. If you can't tell what it is, here's a quote from the artist "It marks the border and the connection between the dead and the living. Between times gone by, and the present. Aspnäs update

Week six at my new A Photo A Week project. This is Aspnäs in Tungelsta. The greenhouses are being replaced with 21 new houses. Still only one prefab house up but the foundations looks almost ready for a few more.

Tradition with a Twist

For forty years we have had an odd Christmas tradition in Sweden. It's against the law, and an American tourist was sentenced to prison for following this tradition a couple of years ago. Here is the story: In Gävle an association called the Southern Merchants build a giant Yule Goat from straw every Christmas. And then we do our best to burn it down! Often successfully, despite police protection and soldiers guarding the goat. You can read more at Wikipedia. And HERE is the web cam. This smaller version can be found in Handen and has survived so far...

All Aboard!

The old steam train locomotive from the Nynäshamn museum at the Tungelsta station. Bigger photo. A couple of times every year the steam train enthusiasts take out the locomotive for a trip to Stockholm on the railway line Nynäsbanan. If you want to, you can travel by steam boat one way, and train the other way.

Ho ho ho?

Anyone? Unhappy Santa at the Tungelsta Christmas faire. Where are all the kids, don't you like chocolate in Tungelsta? This Santa wants you to pick a number, then he will spin the wheel and you will lose your money. Roulette for the kids sort of a thing.

At the Christmas Market

A visit to the Tungelsta Christmas Market. Lousy weather. Not very crowded. Lots of crap to buy. Didn't see any happy kids. That Christmas feeling was nowhere to be found. I had planned to buy a book from a local historian, but I completely forgot about that. After a walk around the market I heard the whistle from the steam train and headed over to the railway station. Greek Orthodox Chapel

I don't know anything about this little Greek orthodox chapel in Handen. Bigger photo. It doesn't look anything like the chapels I have seen in Greece. Being in Sweden it's of course wooden. No one around to ask questions. It looks like they have a new cross to put up. I Googled it and came up with a year, 1976 and a name, Salvatore Caiozzo but that's it.

The Big Ark (panorama)

Updated view from Stora Arken in Handen. Work has begun on the second phase here. Two new buildings with a total of 81 apartments will be built here. The new name will be Fyrspännaren.

Winter Apples

5C and no wind on Sunday. Perfect for a bike ride. I rode along the old Nynäs Road at Berga when I noticed the apples. Figured they would look good as a cutout. Bigger Apples.

‘Tis the Season

A candle's burning on the breakfast table. One for every Sunday in December leading up to Christmas. So I had to get up early in the morning, go out into the forest and find some moss for the adventsljusstaken. Bigger photo.

The old stone bridge

This old stone bridge has seen a lot of traffic through the centuries. The road, Björklundsvägen is 800 meters long and very old. It was part of the old Nynäsvägen to Stockholm and dates back to the Viking era. The bridge can be found close to the Västerhaninge Parsonage Estate. The technique used for the construction is called kallmurning. That means that no cement or similar has been used. The bigger flat stones at the top weighs around 1,5 Metric tonnes each. Today the gravel road will take you to an old farm called Björklunda. From there you will have to travel by foot or bicycle. The path continues through an ancient grave field at the nature reserve Gullringskärret in Jordbro. From there the old road goes through rural Österhaninge past a few rune stones and a medieval church where it connects to other equally old roads.

The Gingerbread House

The Gingerbread House. Or Pepparkakshuset in Swedish. At Nynäsvägen 34 in Västerhaninge. The architect was the Norwegian born Karl Güettler, or Kalle G as his family called him. He lived in Stockholm and did a lot of work in Nynäshamn responsible for both the hotel and the casino. This house was built back in 1912. The exterior is unchanged. At the construction site

Historical Wooden Window

On a cold Christmas morning back in 1901 there probably stood a few people at this window on the second floor looking out. What they saw that day was the first ever train to arrive to the Tungelsta railway station as the railway line Nynäsbanan opened for traffic that day. And if we jump back another year in time to New Year's Day 1900, I'm sure someone looked out this window. But if they did, the scene outside must have been very different. Because then this building was still situated at Fors several kilometres away from Tungelsta. Bigger photo.

Ivar Lo's Life

Relief in granite made by the artist Sam Westerholm. It depicts the life and work of famous writer Ivar LO Johansson who lived at Djurgårdsgrind in Tungelsta. He wrote many novels. In one of them he mentions my grandfather, Harald Fredrik Jansson, a childhood friend. This artwork can be seen close to the Commuter Station in Tungelsta. Bigger photo.

Skogs Ekeby

The Green Hand

That's not the artworks name but that's how I see it. Bigger photo. The sculpture is called Rörd av blommor, or Touched By Flowers. The artist is Klara Kristalova. It's made from bronze and shows a hand that touches some flowers. From the park in Tungelsta. Summer version here.

Stepping back in time

Another winter photo from Skogs Ekeby in Tungelsta. Bigger photo. This is the cellar next to the Haga Cottage. Around 300 years old. It belonged to the estate at Skolvägen.

Hagstugan

This is the 300 year old Haga Cottage at Skogs Ekeby in Tungelsta. Back then it was a Rättarbostad. That's where the foreman of the farm usually lived. It belonged to the Skogs Ekeby Mansion. Today it is used as a summer house.

The old Hotel

If you had arrived to Tungelsta on business, from Stockholm or Nynäshamn, perhaps by the steam train, sometime during the 1920s and 1930s, this would have been where you stayed. Back then it was known as Dahlin's Pensionat (hotel). Operated by Emil Dahlin and his wife Jenny Magnusson. I don't know if Herbert Tingsten ever stayed at the hotel, but he did marry their daughter Gerd. On arrival you would have seen the hotel from the train as it's located close to the railway track. Today it's a private home.

Santa's Place

Did you ever wonder where Santa lives? Here's the answer. In Tungelsta of course. Just take Skolvägen up to Skogs Ekeby Road. When you see the runestone turn to the right and you're there.

Do you have an entrance like this?

I didn't think so. These two majestic trees form the entrance to the Mulsta Länsmansboställe. This place goes back 700 years. I walk by here a couple of times every week. This time I noticed the owner out in the garden so I walked in for a chat. This is the view from the garden back out to the road.

Winter Avenue

This is the tree lined avenue leading up to Hammar in Tungelsta. The estate is 200 years old. It was built by Frans G Upmark back in 1816. The family still lives there today. Wanna see the summer version? Here it is. Behind the house there's a fragment of a runestone. Kenny Lex has a photo.

Winter at Mulsta

This is Mulsta in Tungelsta. The village dates back some 700 years. This building from 1893 was known as a Länsmansboställe, as was the building that stood here before it. For a few centuries many Vassals lived here. When I was there taking photos I stopped and talked to the current owner, who was out herself taking photos as it was a beautiful day. I will upload a few different photos from this place to flickr. The natural framing on the top of the photo is the snow on a telephone wire.

Once a painter lived here

This is how Tungelsta looks today. All the red and yellow houses really stands out with all the snow and the blue sky. Bigger photo. When my dad was young there lived and worked a painter and sculptor in this house. The artist often used nude models, and for some strange reason my dad and his friends could often be seen in this area.

Winter in Sweden

It was a beautiful winter day in Tungelsta today. Bigger photo. With the sun shining from a clear blue sky. Perfect for a photo promenade around town. This little house can be found at Ålsta. The chaos yesterday was the worst in this area for many years. Up to a thousand people were left stranded in their cars and on 17 buses on two roads in Haninge. The military had to come to the rescue, but all they could do was to bring food and water to the angry commuters. A lot of people didn't get home until this morning!

Winter Chaos

Winter is here. We had the first snow overnight. Here is the result. Unhappy commuters. This was the scene earlier this morning at the Tungelsta commuter station. The commuters were told that there were no trains between Nynäshamn and Västerhaninge because of the weather. So these people had to walk back to the bus stop and wait for the delayed bus...

Christmas already?

Two workers at a playground in Jordbro. The tree next to the flagpole is a Christmas Tree that they just put up, (no lights yet). They said that I would have to be quick to get a photo of the tree as they normally didn't last very long in this area. Probably those darn kids, first a ride on the slide. After that they go to destruction mode...
