painting entry

I saw this at Janet of Fond of Snape's this last weekend.

Click here to create your own painting.

Everywhere we have lived, we have tried to collect local art. We have gotten some pretty neat pieces from doing this. A print above the love seat reminds us of waiting on the banks of the Chena River in downtown Fairbanks for the Yukon Quest to start. Most sled dogs are a some type of Husky mix. We saw this team take off with an all blond female in the second slot. Shortly after that race, we were at an artfair in some random building in town. We saw a colored pencil sketch of that exact dog. The artist was there at the show. He offered to do a pencil sketch in the lower corner of that dog.

Another thing I learned in Alaska about art is if you find something you love. Do what you can to get something. Even a signed poster if that is all you can afford at the time. Both Husband and I love Fred Machetanz's work. When we first got there, a print was around $300. We hadn't even been married a year at this time, so $300 to a young newly married couple was out of our budget. Just as we were leaving Alaska, Fred Machetanz died. His $300 prints were now about $1000. Live and learn, skimp and save...

While I like my original artwork I created....if fact I would buy this despite how modern it looks. I would put it in a girly dressing room with a foofoo chandelier.

Happy Tuesday, y'all!

Archive meme....

I've been high-fived by Mango Marie. It's an archive meme. I've been blogging a little more than a year, but I'll give it a shot.

Anyway, here is the reason why this meme was started:

"I know that when I find a new blog that I want to visit again, I rarely have enough time to go back and read everything from the beginning (although sometimes I do!). I want to get to know that person, but it's hard to commit to reading all of the posts from the last 2 years! This meme is designed to make some of those old posts readily available to those who may be new to your blog, or even those who are regulars, just not from the start."

And, here are the rules:
Go back through your archives and post the links to your five favorite blog posts that you’ve written. But there is a catch:

Link 1 must be about family.

Link 2 must be about friends.

Link 3 must be about yourself.

Link 4 must be about something you love.

Link 5 can be anything you choose.

Post your five links and then tag five other people. At least TWO of the people you tag must be newer acquaintances so that you get to know each other better. Readers - don’t forget to read the archive posts and leave comments!

SOOOO, here I go!

Family :my post for when Husband told me he was deploying, I think this sums up much about us as a military family.

Friends: this post is about making new friends

Me - I couldn't decide between When my camera broke and used old pics to post our "move history" and my 100 things about me for my 100th post

Something I love or should I say someone? This was easy: Tuesday Update: Thursday 13.......#20.....Our hero's homecoming

After going through all of these, I guess this last year was really about surviving a 15 month deployment. I have never felt like a "military advocate"...but most of these are about just that....being a military wife. That was fun......feel free to consider yourself tagged if you haven't done this one.

Christmas Questions and Answers

I got this in an email from my former co-workers......made me miss them!!

1. Wrapping paper or gift bags? Usually I'm a gift bag type of gift-giver... EXCEPT at Christmas. I am attempting something new this year: Will's stuff is wrapped in green, Livi in red, and us in white. We'll see how it goes.

2. Real tree or artificial? Artificial. Allergies.....and totally stealing this next part from my old co-worker, David: "if you really need that "Pine Fresh" smell, I'd suggest cleaning your toilets."

3. When do you put up the tree? Our tradition is to always put it up the day after Thanksgiving. This year it is up but not decorated. We are waiting until Husband gets back.

4. When do you take the tree down? Between the 26th and New Year's.

5. Do you like egg nog? Is there bourbon involved?

6. Favorite gift received as a child? I don't really remember.....which makes me wonder if my kids will remember anything they ever get!

7. Do you have a nativity scene? Just the Little People one the kids play with

8. Hardest person to buy for? Usually it's my father-in-law, because he never really needs anything.

9. Easiest person to buy for? the kids

10. Worst Christmas gift you ever received? socks from my great aunt Ruth....actually it wasn't the worst, probably the funniest....she also used to give us chocolate covered cherries.

11. Mail or e-mail Christmas cards? I am totally playing the "deployment" card this year....I might mail them out in January....call them New Year's cards.

12. Favorite Christmas Movie? A Christmas Story

13. When do you start shopping for Christmas? The last few years I have done the hardcore combat-day-after-Thanksgiving shopping with my sister. But I buy stuff year round and keep it in a 'gift closet'.....you know I do!

14. Have you ever recycled a Christmas present? I think I like recycled better than re-gifted.....but yes, I have done this with smelly things that make my nose itch.

15. Favorite thing to eat at Christmas? divinity

16. Clear lights or colored on the tree? Clear white lights. simple and classic

17. Favorite Christmas song? I know I blogged about this: TSO Carol of the Bells

18. Travel at Christmas or stay home? We are staying home since he has a little bit of work stuff until the 23rd.

19. Can you name all of Santa's reindeers? Yes, there's Dasher and Dancer and Prancer and Vixen, Comet and Cupid and Donner and Blitzen. and the most wonderful reindeer of all, Rudolph, **way too many Christmas movies on these days***

20. Angel on the tree top or a star? I think it is a star...how sad that I can't even remember

21. Open the presents Christmas Eve or morning? We do both. One on Christmas eve....usually the jammies, and the rest Christmas morning.

22. Most annoying thing about this time of year? People rushing around three degrees of pi$$ed off.....I am like, stop and enjoy the season.

23. What I love most about Christmas? vegging in pjs with the family all day

HAVE A VERY MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYBODY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Wanna see how I get wild and crazy??

I feel like I am nesting ....like the mad-woman cleaning I did just before both kids were born. There are little to no surfaces that have been left untouched. Okay, maybe the wooden blinds...but I HATE dusting those!

My big project was this room that had become a dumping ground.

When we moved here, we combined Husband's office and my craft room into one area. The kids also had a little desk in the office. Once all of that stuff was crammed into this room (which is supposed to a formal dining room), well, it was kind of crazy.

So, enter this awesome organized wall system. It is made up of nine mini sections. The lower part (you can't see it in this pic) just has some pull out baskets that hold big stuff. All of the stuff in the blue and green cubbies are activities the kids can do. The white three drawer things on the bottom are construction paper and crayon books. The other one has some threading thing, and some foam things. I wanted to be able to make everything in their reach, so they can get things independently.

The cabinets on the right are where I consolidated all my scrapbook stuff. Stuff was just randomly thrown in there on the shelves. Things were getting lost. Last week those boxes were on sale half off at Hobby Lobby. Now things are in properly labeled containers with like things. It does drive me a bit crazy that the long blue boxes don't match the black ones. But PBK is the only place that made boxes to fit that long narrow shelf. The black ones are just cheapo ones from HL. But once those doors are closed you can't see the black, so I can deal with it!

Just because we all love a little brotherly love, I leave you with this....Happy Tuesday, y'all

10,000 ....and the winner is......

A little history of Tuesday Update:
When Will was born four and a half years ago, we were living in Oklahoma.....only about five minutes from my mom. But the rest of our friends and family were stretched from Alaska to Ohio.

Will was born on a Tuesday. I took a picture of him doing something or reaching a milestone every week. I kept a scrapbook called "Tuesdays with Will". I would email the journaling and the photo to our friends and family every week. In the subject line I had "Tuesday Update".

I started this blog in February 2005.....but promptly quit after two posts. I had a four month old and a nineteen month old. ....It was too much.

In the mean time, we moved to Texas. After only being here four months, Husband left on a fifteen month deployment. Yahoo also removed the feature of being able to insert photos into an email. So I decided to give blogging a try again.

Little did I know that I would find the fellow bloggers that I have. I have fourteen days left in this deployment....I know once he returns I will continue this. I enjoy the creative outlet it gives me! I never dreamed anyone besides my family would give a hoot about what I write or what pictures I take!

So, rat a tat tat.......drumroll please: and the winner is Wendy at Snips and Snails. So Wendy, send me your address and I'll send you a little piece of Texas!

Our link chain to count down the days....

This is the paper chain we made to count down the days. Rather than deal with the fight of who would cut each one off each day, each kid made their own. I am all about eliminating as many whiney fits as I can. Of course there is the token 'crazy face' pic for Dad. I can hardly get them to take a normal one now.

here's Manic Monday, hosted by Lisa

What is your least favorite day of the week and why?
None really, but if I have to pick just one, I'd say Thursday....it's not quite the weekend, and if it has been a long week, it just seems to go on forever…

What’s the best way to end the day?
Relaxing - catching up on whatever DVRd fluff I have that isn't kid appropriate.

Which animal would you have left out of the ark?
Definitely scorpians! Also exactly why the Orkin man comes out every month.

Happy Thanksgiving all....the kids and I are off to the land of no internet....Yes, there are still people who still don't have it, even dial up. I am related to them!

Thursday 13.......#16 ......thirteen strengths of my Melancholy self

Thirteen Strengths according to: Free Personality/Temperament test ....kind of scary how right on these are. Next week, I will do weaknesses....gotta start with the good stuff.

The Melancholy as a Parent: (my opinions after the **)

1. Sets high standards **I do this, even Livi can make her own bed at three.

2. Wants everything done right **check....why do it wrong?

3. Keeps home in good order ***again, Flylady keeps me sane

4. Picks up after children ***what mom doesn't, even though they do most of it

5. Sacrifices own will for others **I am getting better at making time for myself, but with Husband gone it is hard!

6. Encourages scholarship and talent **I try to do this.

The Melancholy as a Friend

7. Makes friends cautiously **biggest understatement EVER

8. Content to stay in background **I do have to disagree with this one.

9. Avoids causing attention **true....

10. Faithful and devoted ***Very true

11. Will listen to complaints ***Depends what it is about. I find it hard to listen to someone griping about something they can't change. For example: Not a single thing I can do about this deployment. I will listen to my friends and neighbors gripe, but then "Get over it....not a single thing we can do but mark off the days!"

12. Can solve other's problems ***I usually can do this, but have to really refrain from offering my opinion unless I am asked.

13. Deep concern for other people ***Definitely...

Bonus ones since they were on the list

14. Moved to tears with compassion ***Only if it Aunt Flo is here

15. Seeks ideal mate ***been there, done that....Hurry home, Husband

Edited to add: This test is based on a book called "Personality Plus: How to Understand Others by Understanding Yourself "(Paperback)by Florence Littauer

First day for flannel sheets

I get up every day and do the same old routine:
1. Get up and weigh. Whew hoo! Not bad, despite bloating from being a woman!
2. Shower and get dressed, including hair and face.
3. While you are in the bathroom Swish and Swipe.
4. Grab a load of laundry and start the washer.
5. Check your calendar for today's activities...not much, just make no-bake cookies for Will, and mail anniversary card to Husband.
6. Empty dishwasher to start your day.
7. Eat something good for you and take allergy medicine and vitamin.
8. Drink your water BEFORE coffee.
Yes, this is straight from Flylady. I don't do shoes in the house, she is all about wearing lace up shoes. But I don't need shoes to feel done if I am just veggin' at home.
So, my big thing for the day was #4....see my bed...see that tiny bit of cream sticking out from the back? I put flannel sheets on this morning! I love flannel sheets. We got these years ago from Mike's parents the first year we were in Alaska...(so that makes them almost 9 years old....and they are so soft!!!) I have a mattress pad with a brain (it has warmer coils near the feet, a few in the middle and just a little one near the chest area). I love to turn it on while I am brusing my teeth and washing my face. When I crawl in bed it will be all nice and toasty!! But I leave Mike's side turned off...so if I get too hot, I can scooch my toes to his side and cool down.
It is all a very exact science!!
I can't wait to go to bed tonight! Happy Saturday...

Talk about a Manic Monday

under the tree, originally uploaded by tommiea1.

Last week I started taking a new allergy medicine. I knew it had been messing with my sleep habits most of the weekend, but I didn't really realize how much. Finally last night after getting a tad drowsy around midnight, I decided to try to go to bed and hope to sweet Jesus I would fall asleep.

I kid you not, the kids get up at the a$$ crack of dawn. I get up at 6AM so I can have myself almost ready by the time they get up around 6:30-6:45 or so. I AM NOT A MORNING PERSON....so this kills me...but sleeping later is just not an option now.

1:00 AM- I look over at the clock that I have now covered with a wash cloth because those green numbers seem to flooding the room with light.. I am thinking...."okay, if I can just go to sleep now, I will get five hours of sleep!!" I can do that. My favorite sleep music is softly playing in the background. Still tossing, turning....getting comfortable but not feeling the least bit like sleep is coming anytime soon.

2:00 AM- Dude...say it isn't so....There is really no way I can function on four hours of sleep....I will now have to skip aerobics and come home and take a nap! It is too late to take a Tylenol PM....far be it I thought of that four hours ago!! Oh....well

a little after 2AM.....I must have gone to sleep a little after this. Thank you Mr. Sandman.

For some reason I woke up, threw the washcloth off my clock and looked at the time....OMG, that is LIGHT coming in my room. First, I sleep in a cave practically. We have this tint on our windows to lower our AC bill....and we have wooden blinds. At 6AM NO LIGHT should be coming in my window. That clock cannot be right, there is no way it is 7:47.....The kids have not slept late in ....well ever!! Why couldn't they have done this yesterday?

I jumped out of bed, I did not take a shower! But I did brush my teeth, threw on some tinted sunscreen and lip gloss. Thankfully I have pretty good hair that doesn't need to be washed everyday. I kind of fluffed it up a bit and hoped it didn't look like day old dirty!

Will woke up in the few minutes it took me to get dressed, as did Livi. Their clothes are already laid out, so the isn't the age old drama of "I don't want to wear that." While one was getting dressed, I brushed every one's teeth...made some sippy cups of milk, and threw some Cheerios in a bowl.

Just as we were headed out the door, I realized I didn't even have their lunches. But I pack their lunches the night before....I go so far as to even stick the whole lunchbox in the fridge. I grabbed a cold pack from the freezer and we headed out.

It is only an 11 minute drive to school (you know I have timed it!) Believe it or not, we made it there with one minute to spare.

As hectic as waking up late is, the kids were awesome....we just moved like clockwork. I do have to say I was impressed.

I got home, flipped on the coffee pot and took a long, hot shower! I did try to lay down. But no napping for me. Surprisingly I wasn't that tired all day.

Now it is almost bedtime and I am scared to take my medicine. As smoothly as the morning went, I don't want to do that often.

As for the picture up there, it is from Saturday at the parade field on post. Just kids, playing with sticks...it's a wonder they didn't start hitting each other with them!

happy Tuesday

Tag, you are it.....

Since I am clueless as to what to write about this evening, I think it will be a world record that I did this tag the same day it was issued/given/whatever you call it.

Seems like somebody out there (Cheeky) wants to know some random info....so here goes. She keeps me laughing so I will do it....the Tag is that I have to post 6 things about me and of course tag others at the end.

1. I have used an outhouse at the Arctic Circle. I had to trudge through thigh high snow just to get to it. Fun times when the in-laws come to visit us and want to drive to the Arctic Circle. I do have a picture, but I don't have a scanner, and it was before digital. I could take a picture of the picture, but I am really feeling lazy tonight.

2. I could eat frosted mini wheats for breakfast every single day of my life. Here is the part of that is probably TMI......if I eat them past nine o'clock I get the toots....and I can't like toots. My kids already like way too many body function noises.

3. I have never gone on a blind date. I really need to control my environment and that might have sent me over the edge! Good thing I met Mike when I did.

4. Speaking of Mike, I met my husband at a New Year's party when I was cleaning up empties.....I was housesitting for his Colonel at the time. They had two neurotic dogs that needed watching. They got back after Christmas and asked me to stay for a New Year's party. It was all she wrote after that. We were married 11 months and 29 days after that. That was ten years ago next month!

5. My clothes are hung in order of the color wheel, sleeve length...with white on the left and black on the right. .....Pants are short to long by degree of darkness....lightest on the left. I am a firm believer of one shirt out for every shirt in. For example I got the cutest apple green cable pullover yesterday. I have already pulled two shirts out that I didn't wear at all last fall/winter. (PS, I did two because they were right besides each other and I couldn't decide which one to pick.)

6. Keeping with the TAG theme, If I ever win the lottery, this would be on my short list of things I would blow money on first. It's pink, sparkly, and shiny....what is not to love? Husband, don't get any ideas, it is just a wish!!!
Just a brief look into my little world....or madness as I prefer to call it.....
Not a good tagger,.....do it if you haven't done it....sounds like blog pressure when I say it that way...
happy Friday

Thursday 13....number fifteen, things I have never done

Open Letter to my kids:
Kids-
I know I am all about sharing ...but Will, did you have to share your barfing-ick-thing you had last week with Sister?
So, for Part Two.....Livi's preschool teacher called about 30 minutes before I was to pick her up.....second verse same as the first BUT....she barfed in the car.....while strapped in her carseat. In all my big long four years of parenting, I have NEVER had a kid barf in the car...
so in honor of that, I have my Thursday 13 of "I Have NEVER"

I stole this from Kerri's post a while back....
1. I have never had to clean barf off of a carseat.....and can I just say it was a pain getting the cover off so I could wash it!

2. I have never changed a tire.....that is why Roadside Assistance is for!

3. I have never been arrested- I was the good child!

4. I have never been to France.

5. I have never done drugs....oh wait, is alcohol a drug....you all know how I like my wine!

6. I have never sky-dived....way too chicken.

7. I have never been fired from a job.

8. I have never driven a motorcycle.

9. I have never been to the Grand Canyon.

10. I have never see any of the Harry Potter movies or read them.

11. I have never watched a show that requires me to vote....like American Idol.

12. I have never been to Disneyland.

13. I have never worn the same underwear two days in a row....at least I don't think I have!!

ps....the last time I played this, it was a drinking game at a wives' sleepover when the guys were in the field. It was sooooo funny!! This straight-laced Mary Poppins wife of a 2LT admitted she was into porn, liked to be tied up and used handcuffs! Every time I looked at her after that I had to giggle.....who would have thought...
Happy thursday!

The Tonight Show: Ross The Intern at the Texas vs. OU Game

I am having trouble getting the video to load...so click here:

http://www.thelostogle.com/2007/10/15/gay-californian-ou-football-comedy-genius/

Apparently this aired last week, after the OU/Texas game, but I don’t watch Jay Leno since I am never up that late. So I came across this late, on the internet. If you’ve seen it already, complaints can be mailed to whewhoo@oubeattx. It is so funny!!!

I'm catching up. Heather challenged me. Here is her challenge. Post 5 song titles...with their artists names...and tell the signifigance of each song....like a memory....Here are mine:

1. First let's go back to high school.....get out your Michael Jackson clothes and Aquanet....big hair is REQUIRED!! Oh the memories of old boyfriends at class parties.....dang, almost makes me miss it....think Madonna...True Blue....if I were on my laptop I would link a Madonna True Blue video!!

2. then on to college...Go Boomer Sooner....should we just play the OU fight song. I remember telling a boyrfriend at the time...."if they are beating them by 50 points at half time, I am leaving!"......Boomer Sooner, Boomer Sooner, Boomer Sooner., Boomer Soomer, Sooner Born and Sooner Bred, and when I die and I am Sooner dead, Go Oklahoma, Go Oklahoma, Go Oklahoma, OKU.......

3. Sarah McLachlan.....is there anything more symbolic of some mood music??? fumbling towards ecstacy(afterglow).....omg, just thinking about it make me antsy! uuuhhmmm, how many more days until hubby is home??

4. Will song........song that reminds me of when I was big ole preggo with him:: ."Here without you" by 3 door down

5. Livi song..(again, only because I love me some Sarah!!)..can it be....another song by Sarah.....I tend to think of Sarah music as 'gettin' in the mood music"........could this be the reason for two kids in two years?

6. and finally....love love love me some .RoCKstar....... http://www.nickelback.com/ love love love this song....what does this say about me?? click on Rocktar..speaks to me in a way I think would be fun and frivoulous! . .

BONUS:: Finally the song Stand by Rascal Flatts....this song give me the umphf when I need a little extra during these deployment days!. Again, I challenge any readers out there! I should be getting my laptop any day....why does it seem easier to link via youtube with the laptop!!!
