The Blue Chair

The chair is 96% finished. I say 96% because I can't find the original screws and the screws we do have are pointy and wouldn't be comfortable to sit on.  Home Depot, Lowe's and Walmart are dangerous stores to go in to get just one thing. They're like potato chips. You can never stop at one!

I used this tutorial from The Family Handyman for reupholstering the seat.  I thought I could reuse the existing foam cushion, but the size wasn't right according to the tutorial, so off I went to buy a new cushion.  I cut it with an electric knife, which was the second time that knife has ever been used.  I used regular density foam instead of the high density foam because it was was white instead of green and I definitely didn't want it to show through the fabric.  I also chose to use 2" foam instead of 1" because no one likes sitting in an uncomfortable chair!  My bum comfort was worth the extra dollar or two I spent.  Also, Rolo was a champ, laying by me while I used the staple gun and hammer, while Pepper hid upstairs.

Painting the chair was a slow and steady process. I used this tutorial from The Frugal Girl that recommended using furniture paint, long brush strokes and thin layers of furniture paint. I used an electric sander for the first time ever to remove the shiny finish but had to sand a lot of the rounded edges and receded legs by hand (see the during picture below). That took twice as long as as by machine and sure gave me a workout.  I didn't want to buy special furniture paint, so I thinned the paint of the darkest wall stripe and painted as directed. Then followed a series of painting and waiting and painting and waiting. After the final coat of paint dried, I noticed the chair felt tacky, so I let it dry some more, hence the late post.

I've noticed at night the chair blends in with the curtains and isn't as dark as the stripe, maybe because I thinned it?  I love how the chair looks!  I may have started an addiction to painting furniture!

A Sunday Snack

I got a craving for a snack on Sunday evening and looked to Pinterest for inspiration. I found this great recipe for White Chocolate Marshmallow Popcorn Squares from Yes, I Eat Cake.

  • ~4 C popped popcorn
  • 2 C mini marshmallows
  • 1/2 C white chocolate chips
  • 1/4 C sliced almonds
  • 1 1/2 T butter
  • dash of both cinnamon and nutmeg
Melt the butter in a large pot over medium high heat. Add the marshmallows and stir until they start to melt. Add the chocolate chips and keep stirring until everything is incorporated.
Dump in the popcorn, almonds, cinnamon, and nutmeg and stir, stir, stir.
Turn the heat off and let the mix cool for a minute or two.
Once it’s cool enough to handle, press it into a medium sized pan (I used a bread loaf pan) that has been prepped with non-stick spray.
Let cool completely, then remove and cut into squares. (Could also easily be made into popcorn balls!)

While rummaging in the cupboards for the ingredients, I found these delightful cinnamon chips I bought a couple of months ago. Instead of adding the white chocolate chips and cinnamon, I just added the cinnamon chips and skipped the nutmeg. It smells like Autumn!!!  It's so delicious!

I thought I would be brilliant and make this in a frying pan instead of a pot because of the surface area for melting the marshmallows.  It was a great plan until it came time to stir the popcorn.  The end result came with a mix of seared flesh!  Lesson learned!

Melt the butter in a large pot over medium high heat.

Add the marshmallows and stir until they start to melt. Add the chocolate chips and keep stirring until everything is incorporated.

Dump in the popcorn, almonds, cinnamon, and nutmeg and stir, stir, stir.
(I skipped the almonds and nutmeg.)

Tim fell asleep early and I have eaten a good 1/3 of the batch already.  It doesn't help that I'm watching Everybody Loves Raymond and they are ALWAYS talking about food!!

It would make a great road trip snack, but only if you can resist it long enough to make it to the car!

Projects

Something happens to me in the summer.  I take the frist week to sleep like a log to recover from the sleep I missed during the school year and then I get knee deep into projects.  It's like I have to play catch up from being such a slacker during the school year.  I don't even want to know how many times we've had frozen burritos for dinner!

The first project of the summer was to paint the living room.  Done.  Now I just need to rehang the pictures on the wall which means I will have to put holes in my freshly painted walls or invest in mounting strips.  My vote is mounting strips.

The second project was going to immediately follow the painting but is being pushed back.  I want to add board and batten to our dining room and paint the top half a calming sea green.  It WILL happen, just not now.  So, now what?  I was looking around the house yesterday before church trying to figure out a low-cost project I could work on.  I went to my fabric stash  and found this beautiful fabric that I picked up a couple of years ago and have been too  lazy busy to do anything with...until now.

I thought about a pillow but that seemed too mediocre for a fabric with such potential.  And then it hit me!!  Recover the chair that I recovered once already and paint it to match the room.  To the blog world I went for tutorials on how to paint wood furniture and how to recover a chair.  Since I have two quarts of paint in two different shades of blue that are 95% full, I thought this would be the perfect project.

Now I just need to sand the chair, paint it, recover it and find the screws that once held the cushion in place.  I want to have this project done by the time my curtains arrive later this week, and goals are more likely to get accomplished if they are written down, I am committing to finishing this project completely by Friday.

A New Look

It's been almost a year since I last posted on this blog.  It's been a busy year with lots of ups and downs.  It's appropriate that this post is titled "A New Look" since blogger has also been updated.

Tim and I moved into our first house September 2011 and immediately added Pepper to the mix.  A year later, we added Rolo and life has been busy!!  Two dogs is a lot of work and a lot of fun!  I'm amazed at how opposite these dogs are: big/little, light/dark, smart/not-so-smart.  It's interesting to see the characteristics of their breed showing more.  Pepper is a digger, Rolo is a barker and a total bird dog!  Anytime he sees a bird, he gets so focused on the bird.

The main reason for the post is to share the transformation of our living room.  When we first moved in, the living room was painted terribly.   Paint was on the ceiling, baseboards, and door trim.  It looked atrocious!  As an interior design teacher, I was mortified having my house look like that, but we had little time and resources to do anything about it at the time.

This picture was taken a month after we moved in for our Halloween house warming party.  This shows the ugly poop brown color of the wall.
Well, all that changed this week!  We finally decided on paint colors and a style and got to work.  I started taping in the afternoon and was planning on painting the next day.  Tim is a total night owl, so we started painted at 7pm that night and ended at 11:30pm.

The color options.
Tim spackling and Rolo relaxing under the scaffolding.

I'm not gonna lie, I wasn't sure if I liked the color when we finished, thinking it was too close to white but went to bed and it's grown on me.  Same story with the stripes.  They looked great in a picture and then I wasn't sure if I liked them after they were painted.  It takes a couple of days to get used to any change and now I LOVE my stripes.  They are so fresh and bright.  They are the colors of waves and it makes me miss the ocean.

The inspiration room.                                              Goober, my little helper!                .
After the tape came off!

The room isn't finished yet.  The previous curtains don't match and were just blah, so I went to the Interwebs to look for something better.  I love shopping online, but it's really hard to buy textiles online.  I couldn't decide which ones would look best and Tim wasn't opinionated, only supportive.  "Those look good.  Do you like them?  Get the ones you like."  So, I got three!  In the meantime, I've loved having the window open and letting light in.  Tim and I are in a constant battle about curtains and blinds being open vs closed.  Think of the fairies in Sleeping Beauty changing Aurora's dress from pink to blue and that's what it's like here, minus the magic.   I also have plans for a photo gallery wall.  Maybe I should have called this post "If you give a mouse a cookie!"  I'm excited to see how everything will look as it evolves.

Chillin at the Blickenstaffs'

Went to taste of Provo with Maria today and stopped into Blickenstaffs to see Hailey Buehler and cool off. Here's the giant (almost empty) gum all machine.

Laundry

I have been doing a lot of laundry in preparation for my trip and here are some pictures of Pepper's ''contribution''. Just because she doesn't have opposable thumbs she thinks she can just lounge around. Rude.

Note To Self

Dear Self,

Why are you so dumb?  You knew very well what happens when you don't wear sunscreen.  Remember last year at Disneyland?  Just ask Ali, she'll remind you.  Why did you think getting burned now would make Florida any better?  I hope you remember to wear sunscreen from now on.  It's a good thing Jiffy Lube is so close to a grocery store to get supplies for your current sunburn and future protection.  And I hope you remember this lesson every time you painfully lift your arms up.

Live and learn, dork.  Live and learn.

Sincerely,
Sunburnt but Smarter Me
