Farm Country

Since we only had one full day with Merle and Rob and kids, we decided to take advantage of the beautiful weather and do something outside! We took everyone to Thanksgiving Point Farm Country.

Emma milking: "Mom, take a picture of me milking this real cow!" Well, not quite. This cow doesn't kick the bucket over or swat you with a dirty tail.

The Pony Rides:

Aren't the boys so cool?

I couldn't resist this sheep. It was just so ugly. Can you see all four horns?

A guanaco and a hungry goat!

We were tempted to leave the kids in the jail, but didn't have much luck...

Now I'm going to start looking for things to keep the kids occupied over spring break (Kai will be here, too). Any suggestions for activities that can accommodate a whole bunch of crazy kids?

Visitors!

For the first time since last summer, we had overnight visitors! Amy, Eric and their four kids were here for a few days, and Merle and Rob came with four more this weekend. It was great to see everyone, the kids had a wonderful time playing with cousins, and I found out that I like other people's babies again! That sounded bad, didn't it? It's true, though- I had so many babies so close together for so long that I really had no desire to hold/play with/admire any that weren't mine. It's nice to know that I'm getting past that stage. I really will like being a grandma someday!

Look at those cute kids!

The real reason Amy's family came out was so she could attend the awards ceremony/opening reception of the Church International Art Show, in which her artwork was being exhibited. We got to be among the first to see all of the amazing paintings/quilts/sculptures/fiber art etc. that was chosen for the show. Go here to see all of the art:
http://www.lds.org/ch/remembering/exhibit_2009.html
or visit the exhibit from now through October at the LDS Conference Center in Salt Lake.

You really have to see it in person for the full effect- it is amazing!

It was a great week- although now that all the "extra" people are gone it seems pretty quiet here! Is it possible that 6 kids can seem quiet? Well, maybe for a few hours, anyway.

Pay It Forward

I'm trying something we found on another blog and it sounded like fun. The first three people to comment on this post will receive a gift from me within the next year. You don't get to know when or what it is, but before you comment, you have to do a post like this and offer 3 gifts to the first three comments on your post so we can share the love. What do you think? Hurry, post and then comment!!

She's Running Scared.

Follow-up to the "meat comes from animals" post:

The morning after the aforementioned debacle that ended with hysterical laughter from my 4 year old, I was doing the dishes while she sat on the couch watching Little Einsteins. Suddenly, she spurted out, with more than a little trepidation in her voice,

"Mom, where do CARROTS come from?"

I was enormously relieved to be able to give her an answer that involved seeds, soil, water and sun rather than cute animals and butcher blocks.

She was relieved, too.

What else haven't I told her?

Out of the blue tonight, Annie asked me,

"Mom, how do we make meat?"

Being the sensitive soul that I am, I replied,

"Meat is from animals. We kill them to get it."

Oops. There was a stunned silence, and I decided I'd better clarify.

"Chicken comes from real chickens. Hamburgers come from cows."

Annie: (hysterical giggling)

Yeah- apparently that was a new concept. I don't think she believes me.

A long update on a short week

Oh boy... I really shouldn't go this long between blog posts.

The biggest problem I had with blogging this week was my lack of a camera. Last Friday we took the kids to a BYU gymnastics meet, and I left my camera in the bleachers there! Luckily, this is BYU we're talking about, so we were able to pick it up at the lost and found later. However, I was without a camera until Tim could make it to the Wilkinson Center on Thursday. I have found myself to be remarkably camera-dependent.

Whether you want it or not, here's a quick (you hope) update on the last week:

Saturday, February 28th, Tim and I got our monthly temple trip in. Nothing like putting these things off until the last day of the month, right? Once I get there, I always wonder why I waited... part of me just wants to stay there all the time. Why is it so hard to get there? While there I was reminded of the importance of my job as a mother. I am trying to do a better job of being a nurturer. Too often I get annoyed or angry because of things my children do. I am trying to develop not only love for my children, but charity. That is Christ's love, which can only come by asking Him for it. I hope that this will make a difference in my life and in the lives of my husband and children.

Monday we rediscovered Movies 8 in Provo. All day Monday is Family Day, so we got in for 50 cents each. $4 to see a movie is pretty good! The kids all loved "Bolt", and it is nice to find something that we can all do, all enjoy, and not whine, complain, get hyper, etc.... We're going again tomorrow, since the kids are out of school for the day. This time we'll see "Bedtime Stories".

Tuesday, March 3rd, was Emma's 6th birthday! This was one of the days that I was camera-less, but Rebekah did take a few decent pictures with Tim's phone, so the day didn't go completely unrecorded. We met Grandma and Grandpa Walker for dinner at McDonald's, and then came home for presents, cake and ice cream. She is a cutie, and I have a hard time believing that she is a grown-up six year old already!

Emma started out wanting a "Princess and the Pea" cake that she found in Family Fun- I was a little worried about it, but agreed. When we got to the store, she saw these candy heart decorations and changed her mind. I didn't argue. I made and cut the cake, and she decorated the rest by herself. Didn't she do a good job?

Mom and Dad had been in Hawaii visiting Matt and Jenni, but they came back Wednesday... I missed them! It's nice to have some time apart once in awhile, but I was glad that they came back. Kauai'i looked amazing. I want to go!

(Sorry, Jenni- I stole this from your blog.)

Friday we took the kids to the BYU art museum again... this time for the Walter Wick "I Spy" exhibit. It was really good- I highly recommend it. My favorite parts were the actual model towns/castles/etc. that he actually constructs before he photographs them for his books. Go see the show!

Yesterday was fun but very busy. Tim took Rebekah to urgent care at BYU in the morning. She has had a cough for a few days, and it was getting pretty nasty. I was starting to worry that she was getting pneumonia. Her lungs were clear, though. The doctor says it's asthma related, or something similar. No big deal in this family... we're used to that. She's feeling lots better now.

Tim and I went to a Vocal Point concert in the afternoon. It was so amazingly good. I love stuff like that, and was not disappointed. We decided we need to take the kids next time- they'd love it, too! Here's a link to one of the songs they did:

To wrap up the night, we took the whole family to the last BYU basketball home game. It was a nail-biter, and I had very little voice left after the game. But they won! and the kids had a good time. Even Annie sings the fight song! (Yes, blatant indoctrination. I figure we teach the kids to love BYU while we're here, then we move away from Utah, and maybe they'll be able to get in, since we won't be from Utah County!)

Okay, I realize this is a bizarre picture, but I think Grandma and Grandpa Walker are in it somewhere. We could see them from where we were sitting!

Annie, demonstrating her "Go, Cougars" cheer.

Trust me, Tim was much more excited a little later in the game :)

That's it, finally. I really don't like daylight savings time, although I don't mind the lighter evenings. Dark mornings are the pits.
