Sambal Kampung

Went down to city with an extremely noisy stomach. And so..... what first came to mind was hometown food!! MD brought me to a Malaysian restaurant called Sambal Kampung located at Little Bourke Street. One funny thing that I found was the waitress who took our order. She's just like a robot. I can even describe the process precisely:

Step 1: She walked to our table. Looked at MD. MD ordered.
Step 2: She turned her head 150 degrees to the right. Looked at me. I ordered.
Step 3: She took our menus.
Step 4: She turned her body 180 degrees.
Step 5: She walked away.

As simple and as quiet as that. She also served our food to our table without uttering a single word. Ooo... not only are the food Malaysian, the service provided is also Malaysian, typical mamak style some more. Got a bit of reverse culture shock. Lololol.

Nasi lemak with beef rendang. The beef was very tender and it's just nice because I didn't get any meat stuck in between my teeth. This is not an egg-less nasi lemak. I was just too hungry, so the egg was already in my belly before I could remember to take a photo of it.

Sambal kampung fried rice. Nice until we drool. I don't know how to describe the taste. It was very very familiar but I can't remember where I tasted it before.

After shutting up our tummy, it's time to watch the hot guys tennis match: Tomic vs Federer. Can't believe Federer is just a few kilometers away from us. Lol.

Federer won! And this is what a crazy Federer fan will do: snap a close up picture of him on tv and assume she's the camera woman on the spot. Swt.

Williamstown

Traveled to Williamstown on a ferry with a group of genius (not me, I'm still noob), who talk about parasites 80% of the time, to have a farewell lunch for one of them. The ferry departed from Southgate and surfed along the Yarra River, heading towards the sea.

A gigantic cargo ship going to Singapore.

Some posh bungalows with private yacht.

City view from far. It's a really cooling day without any sunshine at all. Finally I can turn back into a polar bear for once this summer. Hehe.

After about 50 minutes, we arrived at Gem Pier, Williamstown. It was built by the convicts during the 19th century and the ships used to load or unload goods from overseas at this pier because it wasn't convenient to navigate through the Yarra River in those days.

Since we arrived a bit early, we wandered around until lunch time.

The buildings here are quite old-fashioned.

 Wilkinson memorial drinking fountain.

Then we had our lunch at the Ocean Thai restaurant. And I guess I pointed at the wrong food when the waiter was taking my order. The food that came out looked like the one below the curry that I actually wanted to order in the menu. But anyway, it's still nice though. Lol. Blur case....

Well, as you may have already noticed, I hardly put up photos that you can see my face directly in these past 2 years. Today... I actually wanted to post up my up-to-date-look. However, the waitress didn't seem to support this statement by standing at a very cacated (retarded) angle when taking our group photo. Ended up only a quarter of my face is visible. LOL!! Mou lek....

Left row starting from the front: Prof. Terry (our head supervisor); Vignesh (PhD student); Me (the manually censored noob); Dr. Hayley (co-supervisor) and her husband, Ricky.
Right row starting from the front: Lorraine (Prof. Terry's wife); Paul (Irish PhD exchange student); Stone (Main character of this farewell lunch); Laura (Tim's wife) and Tim (PhD student).

Stone will be going back to China for good to complete his PhD.

Heading back on a nicer ferry. We can sit outside and look at the scenery while enjoying the breeze.

These two hyper kids keep asking the passerby to wave at them. Their reaction was a bit funny when the people waved back. Most people waved back though. Lol.

It's a bit of a thrill ride when we were going under a low bridge like this. Can knock off your head if you don't sit or bend down.

Finally, we're back in the city. Loving the weather to the max.

And I don't feel sleepy at all because of this weather. XD

10 Myths/Facts About Introverts

Found some interesting facts about introverts and they explained introverts pretty well. This shows the fun of studying psychology. Happy reading.

Myth #1: Introverts don't like to talk.
This is not true. Introverts just don't talk unless they have something to say. They hate small talk. Get an introvert talking about somethings they are interested in, and they won't shut up for days.

Myth #2: Introverts are shy.
Shyness has nothing to do with being an introvert. Introverts are not necessarily afraid of people. What they need is a reason to interact. They don't interact for the sake of interacting. If you want to talk to an introvert, just start talking.

Myth #3: Introverts are rude.
Introverts often don't see a reason for beating around the bush with social pleasantries. They want everyone to just be real and honest. Unfortunately, this is not acceptable in most settings, so introverts can feel a lot of pressure to fit in, which they find exhausting.

Myth #4: Introverts don't like people.
On the contrary, introverts intensely value the few friends they have. They can count their close friends on one hand. If you are lucky enough for an introvert to consider you a friend, you probably have a loyal ally for life. Once you have earned their respect as being a person of substance, you're in.

Myth #5: Introverts don't like to go out in public.
Nonsense. Introvert just don't like to go out in public FOR AS LONG. They also like to avoid the complications that are involved in public activities. They take in data and experiences very quickly, and as a result, don't need to be there for long to "get it". They're ready to go home, recharge, and process it all. In fact, recharging is absolutely crucial for introverts.

Myth #6: Introverts always want to be alone.
Introverts are perfectly comfortable with their own thoughts. They think a lot. They daydream. They like to have problems to work on, puzzles to solve. But they can also get incredibly lonely if they don't have anyone to share their discoveries with. They crave an authentic ans sincere connection with ONE PERSON at a time.

Myth #7: Introverts are weird.
Introverts are often individualists. They don't follow the crowd. They'd prefer to be valued for their novel ways of living. They think for themselves and because of that, they often challenge the norm. They don't make most decisions based on what is popular or trendy.

Myth #8: Introverts are aloof nerds.
Introverts are people who primarily look inward, paying close attention to their thoughts and emotions. It's not that they are incapable if paying attention to what is going on around them, it's just that their ineer world is much more stimulating and rewarding to them.

Myth #9: Introverts don't know how to relax and have fun.
Introverts typically relax at home or in nature, not in busy public places. Introverts are not thrill seekers and adrenaline junkies. If there is too much talking and noise going on, they shut down. Their brains are too sensitive to the neurotransmitter called Dopamine. Introverts and extroverts have different dominant neuro-pathways. Just look it up.

Myth #10: Introverts can fix themselves and become extroverts.
Introverts cannot "fix themselves" and deserve respect for their natural temperament and contributions to the human race. In fact, one study (Silverman, 1986) showed that the percentage of introverts increases with IQ.

Who're You Calling? Tassie Devil or Me?

I had my first animal watch at the zoo yesterday and how 'lucky' was I to watch the newcomer on the 'lucky' summer day. The 'lucky' summer day that I'm referring to is the day when the true Aussie summer heat attacks. There is always a day in summer with the temperature suddenly shooting up to 40 deg Celsius. And yesterday was 41 deg Celsius! x.x

Oh, and the newcomer that I'm talking about is a Tasmanian devil. So this watch is to make sure that he is comfortable with the new surroundings and doesn't escape. I did the morning shift which was bearable as the temperature was not at its highest yet. And also glad that there's shade at the exhibit, plus it's very windy as well. So it's still not as bad.

Well, because the exhibit replicates the Aussie desert environment, occasionally there will be a gust of mini sandstorm blowing at me when the strong wind arrives. After that, my face will be full of sand. @@" How interesting. People thought that I was crying. Swt. I think I should bring my swimming goggles along next time.

When the keeper showed me where the Tassie devil was, he then looked at a giant rock and said: "Hey Siew May! How are you Siew May? Come out buddy!"

Huh?? What?? Then I asked the keeper what's the devil's name. He said again: "Siew May". I said: "That's my name Siew May." and pointed at my name badge. He was very surprised: "Oh! Yay! Siew May and Siew May!" LOL!

Then he added: "But his spelling is S-U-M-A-E". Ah... So it's Sumae the Tassie devil. Haha.

You might wonder, it's not the same pronunciation. But most Australians couldn't pronounce my 'Siew', they usually pronounce as 'Sue'. So Siew May = Sumae! At least now the keepers can remember my name easily.

Sumae was in his burrow the whole time. At least I can still see his face, and he is sooooo cuteeee!! If you have good eyes, you can see his ear in the photo.

Currently there are Zooperheroes in the zoo to interact with the children. I met one Zooperwoman yesterday. She said she's walking around trying to find someone to talk to, and because of this heat, the zoo was super quiet. This is only a casual costume as it's impossible to wear the full hero costume under this scorching heat. I wonder if she will get a pattern around her eyes after this. Lol.

Look at the cute zebras! My first time seeing them soooooo motionless. They must be talking to each other about the heat.

"What the heck is kookaburra?" This photo answers your question. Hahahaha!

Oh my cute Arturo!! Heading for a swim. Erm... actually he poo poo first before he swam. Lol. I just skipped a picture of him. I still wonder why he never poos on the ground. Is he toilet-trained?

Look at him!! SO CUTE!!!!! =D

He did a few laps. Quite a good swimmer.

Cooling himself down after the swim. He's lucky to have private pool.

Having the shift on this day was not completely bad since I got the chance to see what the animals were doing on the hottest day of the year.

Welcome 2013

Happy 2013 everyone! Though 2012 was not too bad with quite some exciting and memorable happenings, but it's time to say goodbye to 2012 and get ready for new challenges that are waiting ahead in 2013. In terms of getting ready, I am indeed doing some extra work during the summer holidays to prepare myself for my coming research project.

Apart from new challenges, I'm also excited about the brand new environment where I'm going to spend my Honours year, which is the brand new AgriBio building next to the uni. I like how it looks like a working place instead of classrooms for undergrad students like me.

I was surprised when my co-superviser showed me my desk as I haven't officially enroll yet. Well, the phone is not working yet as it's only my temporary desk I think, but I hope I can get this seat after they accommodate all the students because it's close to the window. Haha.

This is my lab working table and brand new and colourful pipettes with me being the very first one to use them. How awesome! Lol. Despite I have to share the table with another Honours student, but I'm happy enough to be able to use new apparatus.

I'm still finding my way around the building as I got lost a few times, and I find that I need to get lost to be able to really recognise and remember the way. Lol.

So that's my intro for 2013 and happy new year!
