Cooking Summary

This is going to be my final post on my cooking for the year, and I just realised that I actually didn't post much about my cooking throughout the year. Lol. The motivation level in cooking something new has plummeted compared to that during my first year in Australia. It's because I use packet sauces most of the time and they're so super convenient for a lazy cook like me. So there's nothing special to blog about as I eat the same thing everyday. Haha.

Only once in a blue moon, I will be controlled by the cooking mood. That's when I'm willing to spare my time to try out something new. So here are the new food that I've made during the second half of the year.

First one will be potato baked. It's supposed to be perfect without the burnt side and over-cooked potatoes, but because MD wanted more cheese, so I had to wait for her and a friend to go out and get some more cheese while this whole thing was still in the oven. @@" So we ended up eating baked 'mashed' potato, and of course, those Winnie the Pooh fork and spoon are not mine. Swt...

My tuna morney. I used to eat the frozen meal of this. Since there's also a packet sauce for this, so I tried making it my own. It turned out to be quite similar to the frozen meal! Haha. But if I'm lazy, I will still opt for the frozen meal. Lol.

Onde onde!! Sorry for the disappointment, but they were not made by me. MD made this. They were quite nice though a few of them burst. I only helped out with the rolling and I was pretty sure the burst ones were not mine because my onde onde have thick skin. Haha. The sugar melts super quick and it's not easy to roll a perfect onde onde you know!

My first homemade burger. This idea suddenly came to me as I remember my brother always make burger for me when I was in primary school. Although it's only with tomato sauce, but it's a lunch that I always looked forward to. I never like to cook patties because I don't know when is it ready and it takes agesssss to fully cook it. I can sleep....Zzzz. Here is my simple beef burger with tomato sauce. As I thought, the patty was not fully cooked, but since it's beef so it's fine. Lol.

So that's it for my cooking for year 2012. What will I be cooking in 2013? I have no idea! So stay tuned. =)

Melbourne Gaol

My last post on my travelling with Vivien. We got arrested by the police and were brought to the jail because Vivien stole a beautiful flower from someone's garden and I got dragged along the run without knowing what has happened. So I was actually innocent. Haha.

Anyway, we went to the Melbourne Gaol as it's one of the tourist attractions that I haven't been yet. The building is just like this with 3 storeys and rows of cells, but we still spent quite a fair bit of time in there because there's a lot of reading involved.

Each cell looks like this. There's a story and a death mask of the criminal who lived in there long long time ago. Although most of them committed the same kind of crime, murder, but their stories were very different and it's quite interesting to read each of them.

We also went for the watch house tour in another building beside. The tour was fun as they made us really looked like we've committed a crime. We went in a group and we were given a criminal character and what crime we have 'committed'. When the sergeant asked us a question, we had to reply "yes, sergeant" or "no, sergeant". The sergeant looked serious but he was funny. Haha. We also had to stand in a line and show him our hands. He said that people can hide drugs or whatever weapon in between their fingers. Then turn back and hands on the wall so that he can check the bottom of our shoes. Then we spent a 'night' in a cell (he just locked us in a cell and switched off the lights for 5 minutes). Haha. We also have a mugshot photo and one behind the bars photo and we looked so happy going to the jail. LOL! I will update once I got the photos from Vivien.

Life in the gaol: a series of bells measured out the prisoner's day. They rang to tell inmates when to eat, pray, work, exercise or sleep. Everything was regulated, silent and anonymous. When prisoners were locked in their cells at night, total silence prevailed. Also during the day, they worked in silence.

The infamous Irish Australian bushranger, Ned Kelly. He sort of represents the real Robin Hood.

This is Ned Kelly's cell and a whole lot of stories about him, including his family tree.

Ned Kelly's death mask.

We didn't expect to have so much more criminal stories to read when we reached the second floor, and it was near the closing time already. Lol.

A pro escapee who escaped twice and enjoyed his freedom for over 10 months before the police could recognise him.

And some of them were just having an awfully bad day. This murder case was the first case to track the criminal by using hair sample. However, they've caught the wrong person and so this innocent guy was executed. Before his execution, he loudly swear that he's 100% innocent. Only many many years later, modern researchers took another 12 years to investigate every detail in this case and finally they were fully convinced that this man was innocent, making him the first person executed in Australia to be pardoned.

Baby farming case and the first woman to be executed in Victoria.

When we heard someone rang the bell, saying 'the gaol is closing', then only we made our way to the exit. We went there in the afternoon and I didn't expect to spend such a long time in the jail until we have to leave right at their closing time. Lol. Overall it was fun and it's an interesting place to go if you like crime stories.

National Gallery of Victoria

Got dragged to the National Gallery of Victoria. There's a Ballet and Fashion thingy going on at that time. Besides these ballet costumes, they also showed videos of high class ballet performers. Although I love dancing especially hip hop, and am always keen to try different kinds of dance, but somehow ballet is the only dance that I'm least interested in. I'd rather waltz my night away in heels than floating around like a swan in a ballet dress. @@"

Then walked around looking at the paintings.

I don't know who are they but they look classy. Lol.

I just simply took a photo of one of them.

The one on the left is called a cruet. It's used during the mid-eighteenth century as a convenient condiment dispenser. And a kettle on the right.

Flowery plates.

A candelabrum.

Sconces!

There were still a lot more other things to see but we were too tired to take photos of them. For me who don't have any arts sense, learning those vocabularies was the most enjoyable thing I can do in the gallery since I don't know how to appreciate the paintings. x.x

Bundoora Park

Although I always pass by this park but I never knew that it's got so many things further inside the park. Bundoora Park is the largest park in the Northen suburbs. There's actually a small farm located inside the park, plus a heritage village, plus a golf course! While trying to find our way to the farm, walking in the park in summer was not a very good idea. I felt like a steamer by the time we reached there. @@"

Getting ready to explore the park.

This goat is so handsome. Lol. He climbed up the fence and greeted us.

This kid is so so cuteeeee!! Omg!!

I guess he was very hungry as he kept sucking my finger.

School children lining up for pony ride.

Guinea pigs and rabbits.

We've been observing the two of them running around until they stopped doing this. Lol. The male so hairy.

Farm ducks wandering around.

Some of them are allowed to come out and walk around. And they are very obedient too.

There was also a bottle feeding session for the visitors. Luckily there weren't many people and there were many kids and lambs, so everyone can have one or two to feed. When they were released, the whole barn suddenly went so lively. Lol.
My kid! So cute!!

And this is Vivien bottle feeding.

The only big horse we saw. The rest are all ponies and asses.

My first time seeing them suckling. It's quite aggressive. Lol.

The lambs are so cuteeee!!!! I can stand there the whole day and look at them.

If you haven't seen this kind of bird before, first thing you need to know is it is not a crow accidentally got bleached. It's a magpie and it can sing beautifully. This magpie stayed close to us when we were having lunch, hoping to get some crumbles or leftover. And it did because of me. Lol.

It's a small farm but I like how they let the lambs and goats walk around instead of just staying in the barn. Sometimes, you will get a few of them running to you when you're taking pictures. I definitely will come back again but of course not during summer.

Melbourne Museum

Was very occupied last week because this person has flew over to pay me a surprise visit. Lol. This is Vivien  Sow saying hello from Melbourne! =D

Initially the museum was not in our list, but since students have free entry and I haven't been there before, so we just went there on one fine day.

A video of a giant marsupial. It's like a giant wombat. So cute.

This is a giant millipede Arthropleura. It was the largest land animal of its time. This can give people nightmares.

A prehistoric shark with spikes on its head. They still have no idea what were those spikes for.

There's this insects wall of fame which I find it interesting. This is a double drummer, the world's loudest insect.

This is the world's greatest people killer, the Anopheles mosquito. Worldwide, malaria kills over 1000000 people annually.

The world's largest moth. This is atlas moth that can be found in Indonesia.

Collections of beetles. From the smallest to the largest.

I wish all of them can move once the museum is closed at night. I'm gonna be so happy. Lol.

There's a psychology section with quite a lot of interesting facts. This is the ames room. It's a trapezoid room that appears cubic when viewed through the peep hole because it removes any clue of stereovision. So our visual perception is tricked thinking it's a cube. The person in the room also appears to grow or shrink when moving from one corner to the other. This is a snapshot of Vivien's epic blur moment. She didn't know that there was a CCTV in the room to allow people to look at how the ames room works. I should have recorded the whole process. Hahaha.

Are experts born or made?

A picture of Melbourne in the very olden days.

Little Lon was the dark side of Melbourne city in the 1860's, where prostitutes, drunks, nuns, tradesmen and recent immigrants lived. It was called Little Lon maybe because the area was bounded by Lonsdale, Exhibition, Little Lonsdale and Spring streets. This is the area and it's like a haunted house.

And the toilet that had to be shared with the neighbours.

The old radio. So cute. Lol!

I think this is a pie warmer if I'm not mistaken.
The visit took longer than I expected. I expected that we would finish within 2 hours but we took 3 hours to reach the exit. Lol.
