Mermaid or a whale?

Thought this was classic, and true.

Recently, in a large French city, a poster featuring a young, thin and tan woman appeared in the window of a gym. It said:

¨THIS SUMMER DO YOU WANT TO BE A MERMAID OR A WHALE?¨

A middle aged woman, whose physical characteristics did not match those of the woman on the poster, responded publicly to the question posed by the gym.

To Whom It May Concern:

Whales are always surrounded by friends (dolphins, sea lions, curious
humans). They have an active sex life, they get pregnant and have adorable baby whales. They have a wonderful time with dolphins stuffing themselves with shrimp. They play and swim in the seas, seeing wonderful places like Patagonia, the Barren Sea and the coral reefs of Polynesia. Whales are wonderful singers and have even recorded CDs. They are incredible creatures and virtually have no predators other than humans. They are loved, protected and admired by almost everyone in the world.

Mermaids don’t exist. If they did exist, they would be lining up outside the offices of Argentinean psychoanalysts due to identity crisis. Fish or
human? They don’t have a sex life because they kill men who get close to them not to mention how could they have sex? Therefore they don’t have kids either. Not to mention who wants to get close to a girl who smells like a fish store?

The choice is perfectly clear to me; I want to be a whale.

P.S. We are in an age when media puts into our heads the idea that only skinny people are beautiful, but I prefer to enjoy an ice cream with my kids, a good dinner with a man who makes me shiver and a piece of chocolate with m
y friends. With time we gain weight because we accumulate so much information and wisdom in our heads that when there is no more room it distributes out to the rest of our bodies. So we aren’t heavy, we are enormously cultured, educated and happy. Beginning today, when I look at my butt in the mirror I will think, ¨Good gosh, look how smart I am…¨

Dreams

I read this article today and I am sure many of you have heard of this as well. I love stories like this that show us the struggles people face, but also how people are there by their side and the kind acts of so many every day people.

One little 10 year old girl with vascular cancer dreamed of seeing the movie 'Up' before she left this world behind. She was too sick to leave her home so Disney/Pixar brought the movie to her. She watched it and died later that evening. You can read the full story HERE.

I hope that throughout my life I can have many opportunities to be there for those who are struggling because I have been so lucky to have many people there for me during difficult times.

52 days of Domesitc Violence Flu in America

I think this is a very important article. And something we need to all think more about. It is a few weeks old but still the message rings loud and clear.

52 Days of Domestic Violence Flu in America

By Casey Gwinn

This week I have been reflecting on those that would choose to ignore the importance of dealing with domestic violence in America. After over 30 years of the modern domestic violence movement, we still struggle for funding, we face budget cuts and reductions when the economy goes bad (though domestic violence rises) and we rarely are the primary focus of public policy makers in America. This week the news is consumed with coverage of the swine flu, an important public health issue in America. As of May 2, there have been 167 confirmed cases of the swine flu in the United States and one death. But there has been little news about the mass killings of 68 people across America in the last 52 days, with men doing all the killing and virtually all related to men with a history of violence against women.

Public health officials in the United States fear a global pandemic from the so-called H1-N1 virus. A pandemic is defined as a global outbreak of disease that causes serious illness or death and then spreads easily from person to person worldwide. Pandemics differ from seasonal outbreaks of an illness. The news today quoted many officials talking about high levels of illness, death, social disruption, and economic loss from pandemics. We must all be vigilant about addressing swine flu in the days ahead. But the pandemic of violence by men against women, men, and children has killed more people in the last 52 days in America than swine flu. This pandemic has been going on now for hundreds of years causing high levels of mental and physical illness, death, social disruption, and economic loss.

There have been 12 Mass Killings in the last 52 days in the United States. In 10 of the 12, the killer had a history of violence against women. 11 of the 12 were directly related to or defined as domestic violence. 68 people have been killed in those mass killings including 20 children and 7 police officers.

Let’s honor those who have lost their lives by listing them.

March 10 – Michael McLendon, 28, killed ten people, including his mother, grandmother, aunt and uncle, and the wife and child of a local sheriff’s deputy in rural Alabama. He then killed himself. The worst mass killing in the history of Alabama killed: Virginia White, 74; James White, 55; Tracy Wise, 34; Dean Wise, 15; James Starling, 34; Lisa McClendon, Michael’s mom; Bruce Maloy, 51; Andrea Myers, 31; and Corrine Gracy Myers, 18 months.

March 21 – Lovelle Mixon, a parolee with a history of violence against women, sexual assault, and other violent crimes shot and killed four heroic Oakland police officers – Sgt. Mark Dunakin, 40; Officer John Hege, 41, SWAT Sgt. Ervin Romans, 43; and SWAT Sgt. Daniel Sakai, 35 before he was shot and killed by police.

March 29 – Robert Stewart, 45, shot and killed eight people at Pinelake Health and Rehab Center in Robbins, North Carolina. He came to the center seeking to kill his wife, Wanda Neal, 43, a nurse’s assistant. She was working in the Alzheimers Unit when he entered the facility and survived after herding residents into the TV Room and locking the door.

March 30 – Devan Kalathat killed six people in a murder-suicide in Santa Clara, California including his children. During his rampage he shot his wife, but she still clings to life in critical condition. Police identified the victims as Kalathat's children: 11-year-old Akhil Dev and 4-year-old Negha Dev; Kalathat's brother-in-law Ashok Appu Poothemkandi, 35, Poothemkandi's wife, Suchitra Sivaraman, 25; and the Poothemkandis' infant daughter, Ahana Ashok.

April 4 – Pittsburgh police officers Eric Kelly, Stephen Mayhle, and Paul Scuillo were shot and killed responding to a “domestic disturbance” call. They were ambushed by Richard Poplawski when they arrived at the house. Officer Eric Kelly was not on duty. He was on his way home to his wife and three daughters when he heard the call on his radio and responded to support his fellow officers.

April 5 – James Harrison killed his five children in Pierce County, WA while his wife was at work. Police confirmed that the couple had a domestic violence incident earlier in the day and the wife had left. The husband demanded that she return and while she was away he methodically shot Maxine, Samantha, Heather, Jamie, and James. The first four children were shot in their beds. The last child was shot as she was running toward the bathroom.

April 5 – Kirby Revelus, 23, killed his 17 year old sister, Samantha and his five year old sister, Bianca. Police officers responding to a domestic violence incident shot and killed him as he was trying to kill his 9 year old sister Sarafina.

April 7 – Kevin Garner fled Greenville, Alabama late in the afternoon after setting fire to his wife’s home and car. Hours later, police found his wife and daughter, and her sister and her sister’s son shot to death inside the burning home. Garner later shot himself before being apprehended.

April 10 – Two students at Henry Ford Community College were found dead in a murder-suicide in the Fine Arts Building on campus in Dearborn, Michigan. Police determined that Anthony Powell, 28, killed Asia McGowan, 20 with a shotgun and then turned the gun on himself.

April 18 – Christopher Allan Wood, 34, an accountant for a railroad operator, killed his wife, Frances, and his three children in Middletown, Maryland before taking his own life with gunshot to the head. Chandler was 5 years old, Gavin was 4, and his daughter, Fiona, was 2 years old when she was shot and stabbed by her Dad.

April 19 – William Parente, 59, killed his wife, Betty, 58, and daughters Catherine, 11, and Stephanie, 19 before killing himself in Garden City, New York. Each of the victims was killed by asphyxiation and blunt force trauma.

April 25 – University of Georgia professor George Zinkhans shot and killed his wife, Marie Bruce, and two of her friends from a local community theatre group in Bogart, Georgia. Two others were seriously injured by bullet fragments. Her two murdered colleagues were: Ben Teague, 63, and Tom Tanner, 40. More than 200 police officers are currently searching for him the dense woods near Bogart, 60 miles east of Atlanta. Police believe Marie was preparing to get a restraining order, file for divorce, and leave him after a history of domestic violence.

So, we are not done in the effort to stop family violence in America. We all must re-double our efforts to raise awareness, call for more resources in the war by men against women and children. We must call it what it is…it is not Violence Against Women. It is most often Violence By Men Against Women. All the killers in the mass killings of the last 52 days have been men.

The next time you hear someone say they cannot afford to keep a Family Justice Center or domestic violence shelter program open because of the economy, ask them to read this article. Next time, you hear someone say that we don’t need any new, evolving, innovative approaches to family violence prevention because our current service delivery models are doing the job well; ask them to read the list of 68 names from the 52 bloody days of domestic violence in 2009. Don’t be silent; don’t let elected officials, or policy makers, or bureaucrats, or disinterested community members ignore the tragedy of domestic violence. We must address swine flu in America and around the world but we must also take guns away from men who are violent and start spending the time, energy, and money necessary to stop the pandemic of violence by men against women that is destroying families, killing women, men, and children, and continuing to destroy the lives of so many.

(Casey Gwinn is the former San Diego City Attorney who founded the internationally recognized San Diego Family Justice Center which is credited with reducing domestic violence homicides in San Diego by over 60%. He currently serves as the President of the National Family Justice Center Alliance which is developing specialized, multi-agency Centers to stop domestic violence across the United States. Everyday Heroes

There has been buzz lately about Susan Boyle and the pilot of the U.S. Airways flight that had to emergency land in the Hudson, who saved everyone on the plane.

These everyday people were thrust into stardom in a matter of days. The YouTube video of Susan Boyle got over 14 million hits in just a day. Why is it that people are making such a big deal over these people and other 'normal' people just like them?

Perhaps it is because of the state our current situation is in, these stories provide us with hope and make us happy. It shows that normal people can do extraordinary things. A 'spinster' Boyle showed us that you shouldn't judge someone by how they look or what their life situation might be. Her voice inspired millions and put a lot of people who were doubting her in their place.

Chesley Sullenberger the pilot of the plane was calm and cool under pressure and safely landed the plane into the Hudson saving the lives of the 155 people on board. This average man did what he needed to do and inspired all of us that we can make a difference and that we are all heroes in our own way.

I love these stories that make national attention because they really help me to look more closely at the everyday people in my life and the heroic things they do everyday firefighters, cops, moms, teachers, friends, there are heroes in all of our lives and we might just be the heroes in others.

Trying to be a recessionista

So we all know that our country is currently going through a recession so I have been trying my nack at being a "Recessionista". Anyone who knows me well knows that I am not the best bargin shopper alive, but during these times I am trying my best to become a recessionista.

What is a recessionista you ask? Well I like this definition..."A recessionista is a modern sort of girl who is trying to survive the credit crunch the best she can and with style. We're all recessionistas now.
—Ann Marie Hourihane"

This quest of becoming a recessionista is honestly at the moment not going too well. My intentions are good but I have a long way to go. I need to get thrify and get going to become a true recessionista.

If you have any tips for me on how to do this let me know!

3 top Under-rated TV Shows

There are some shows on TV that I love and that are very smart, funny, clever, etc., but do not have the same publicity and following as other shows like CSI for example. But these shows are some of the best out there and if you've never heard of them, now is your chance to TiVo and catch up on what you've been missing.

1. Monk
Monk is such a clever show with a great cast. Tony Shalhoub who plays the main character Adrian Monk is a fantastic actor. He has been nominated for many awards from playing Monk but does not get all the praise he should from the general public. He is an obsessive compulsive brilliant detective who tries to not let his compulsions get in the way of solving crimes. Great show, great writing, great acting, just great everything. Watch it on USA Network on Fridays 9/8 Central. New Episodes start on January 9th.

2. Psych
Psych is on right after Monk. Basically two friends who start a phony agency titled "Psych." One the the main characters Shawn Spencer has photographic memory and is good at solving crimes pretends to be psychic and works for the police department. His best friend Gus is always along for the ride although sometimes not willingly. Very funny show and the two main characters have a wonderful relationship on camera and you will laugh at least once while watching this show, promise. Airs on USA Network Fridays at 10/9 central. New episodes begin January 9th.

3. The Closer
Kyra Sedgwick plays Deputy Chief Brenda Leigh Johnson who is very good at getting confessions from criminals and interrogating. She has a great southern drawl and is a complex character that drives her finance crazy sometimes. Oh and she loves junk food. The show is very well written and keeps you guessing. The cast is amazing and everyone and everything about the show just clicks. You'll know what i mean when you watch it. It airs on TNT Monday nights 9/8 central. New episodes begin January 26th.

These are all I can't think of right now although I am sure there are many more underrated shows. Don't forget to watch the all time best TV Show The Office! :) What are some shows you think are underrated?

Cocomotion

I am sure many of you have heard of the this fantastic invention from Mr. Coffee...The Cocomotion. I first tried the Cocomotion two years ago during the chilly winter season. At first I thought it was useless and I did not understand why I could not just warm up hot water and add my cocoa with a spoon as I had been doing for years. Little did I know what a great invention lay before me. You will never drink homemade hot chocolate after using your Mr. Coffee Cocomotion. It is so easy, just add water/milk/whatever you want and your choice of cocoa put the lid on and press start. The Cocomotion will mix it all together while heating it up and you will end up with hot coco stirred to perfection. It is a great gift to give to someone who loves hot cocoa! Prices range from $15-$20. Now go grab one or ask Santa and enjoy. Preferably snuggling in a blanket next to a warm fire.

Here are a couple of places you can find the Cocomotion online:

What you want, baby I got it....R-E-S-P-E-C-T

So today in my English class I remembered how much it bothers me when people are disrespectful to others. Heaven knows we don't live in a perfect world, but if everyone could give a little more respect it would make a world of difference. In a dating violence pamphlet at work it says "GIVE RESPECT. EXPECT RESPECT." I love that!

Anyway the reason it was bugging me in English class and why it does in life sometimes (other than relationships and respect which I won't get into b/c of course you should respect friends, partners, family, etc. and it would take me forever to blog about that) is because I don't think people respect others opinions all the time. We get so blindsided by our own opinions that we discount others.

And I have found that some that profess to be "free thinkers" and believe that everyone should have their own opinion and be "free from society" are some of the worst of the bunch. They are so determined that they are right that they pretty much tell those with different opinions and thoughts that they are stupid because they think differently than them. Well aren't they the ones that are saying we should all have the right to our own opinions? And who says that you are right? It can go both ways, of course very conservative people can be the same way as far as not being willing to listen to the other side. Why can't we all just listen to one another, and even if we disagree, it doesn't mean we have to try and convince one another to agree with our opinions. I wish we could all just have conversations and be willing to listen to and respect one another despite differences of opinions. (I think I have said the word "opinions" a million times.....opinions. A million and one.)

I am not super conservative or super liberal so I can say this.....according to me. (no one reads this anyway so who cares?) It is funny to me that those professing to be the most "accepting" and want equal rights for everyone have many of their own ways of being close minded. (I'm not saying all of them) But they discount what those who are very conservative believe. I think both sides have some good strengths. But, when you can't look past your own beliefs and listen to others for just one second you also become blind. No one should believe that their opinions are the "RIGHT" way. They may be right for you but not for everyone. We should just all "Give respect and expect respect" Respect others opinions and be willing to learn from others. This doesn't mean changing what you believe but don't assume you are right no matter what.

This post is dedicated to a couple students in my English Class.

Love everyone! (But don't trust everyone) :)

The Joy of Giving

It's the time of the year that people think a lot about service. Before I write anything I would like to say of course that hopefully we can look for ways to serve always! I need to remember that and I try to every year, but its easier said than done. Anyways, it is great to see an out-pour of service throughout the holidays. I have been thinking a lot about service this week because I have seen a lot of it at work. Because I work at a non-profit agency we thrive on donations. And here in Cache Valley there are many wonderful people willing to donate so much to us. We have had several people/ organizations donate turkey dinners for Thanksgiving for the families who come through CAPSA. I am one of the lucky ones who gets to give the dinners to the families that come in because I am in the front office. These people are SO grateful and its amazing what the power of serving can do and the changes it can make.

All the service that I see personally and stories I have heard just go to show, people are generally good. It makes me think how much different our world would be if we served just a little more. If everyone served one person a day, and that person served another and so on, the world would be an amazing place! I truly believe that each individual can have a huge impact on the world around them. If we all did what we talk about doing, what we really want to do, serve just a little more, how much better would our corner of the world be? And not only would those around us be happier, but we would be happier. I think the big thing is taking responsibility to ACT and not just stand on the sidelines and wait for others to do the serving.
I hope all of us can be more aware of the ways we can serve, big and small. And not only during Christmas but all year. Each of us has the power to change lives and to make the world a better place.
