// Nice to Meet You /

It's probably safe to say that many of the young magicians can Blame Blaine for our introduction to the wonderful world of magic. I mean, let's face it. Not all of us have the fortune of living in places such as Las Vegas, where magicians are almost as frequent as the tourists.
.
Many of us, in fact, do not even have a magic shop near by. Magicians and entertainers who have taken to the medium of television broadcast have a way of captivating our imaginations as we sit in the comforts of our homes. We watch these performers and think to ourselves, "Is it really possible to float like that?". "Do I have the ability to instill wonder in people... to astonish and amaze?"
.
Of course, the answer is yes.
.
New magicians, who are just taking their first bleary-eyed steps into a world that's been forever shrouded in shadow and mystery will try their hardest to try and be like the interesting beings they see on TV... trying desperately to find their place in this crazy realm where cards are our friends, and where when someone utters, 'the pass', people cringe in fear, and hide under desks and piles of debris!
.
Performing magic shouldn't be about "Hey, he can do the trick that David Blaine can do!" It's about letting your own individuality shine through, and forming your own personality. So instead of, "Hey, that's the guy who's just like Blaine!" You can instead hear, "Hey... there's the guy who read my mind... it was real spooky, man." Once you have too developed your own character when performing, your magic will be all the better, and you'll start to build your own reputation, for who you are.
.
The big question, of course, is how? How can we break away from the "Blainiac" stereotype that people are so familiar with today? In a way, this is one of the hardest challenges a magician can face. You have to prove to people that you're not someone elses' wannabe, but rather an individual artist. Probably the easiest way is to stop thinking about who you enjoy following. Learn to focus on yourself, and your own day-to-day personality. If you're a naturally funny guy, infuse humor into your magic. If you're a naturally shy person, develop a more down to earth, serious performing style. In order for your magic to be successful, you need to connect and relate to people. Your job is not only to entertain your audience, but you need to be their best friend for the time you're in their company. They have to like you in order to like your magic. Even if you're about to scare the crap out of them, or gross them out, they need to relate to you as a person, and not just as a magician.
.
Another important thing is that when you're out on the street, or performing at a party, you need to keep one thing in mind. Nobody cares about your sleight of hand. Nobody cares how many long, frustrating hours you spend on your ***********. They won't be impressed with your ***********, or your super-duper *************. You are there to entertain them by showing them things they've never seen before. Everything hangs on your ability to perform under fire, and pull of an amazing performance. Be sure to involve your spectators and make them feel involved. (Shuffling's always a good one!) This is an experience for them. It's not too often that they get to see a real live magician. You want to make your encounter with them as magical an experience as possible, using everything you have including your personality. At the end of the performance, you want them to remember you as "the magician who made my card fly across the room into the host's pocket", not as "that guy who did something that Blaine can do."
.
Bottom line: Don't try to be the next Blaine, Copperfield, or whomever else. Be yourself, and only yourself. Let it shine through with your magic. Most importantly, have fun. Enjoy your magic, and your spectators will enjoy it too.
