Our Mansfield Thiots
Becky has had a fun week getting her Easter Decorations put out.  I love your new family picture on your mantel with those cute bunnys.  I can't wait to come and see it in person.  Your new paint color makes for a beautiful Easter Home.  Well done Becky!  Brooklyn, Addison, Harper, I miss you girls.  I hope we will get to see you soon.  Your Daddy's birthday will be coming up next week. I can't wait!

Mr. Max was helping in the garden today and guess what?  He thinks dirt is tasty. He was loving playing in the dirt  This picture looks like he could have been one of the Walton kids who grew up with no shoes and overalls in the Blue ridge mountains of Virginia.  It makes me so proud of Tatia for letting him Sample the Virginia soil for the first time.  He was so mad when she took him inside to take a tubby.  He would have loved to continue playing. Penny has had a good week.  She was not interested in eating the dirt, but she loved helping her mom reposition some of the plants that have come up on their own into better spots.

Charlie and the Boy Scouts took a ride over the Golden Gate bridge on Saturday morning.  One of his scouts front tire had a blow out and I'm glad to report was not injured when it happened.  Now for the amazing part of  the story that I am guessing if you know Charlie Thiot, you will not be surprised.  Charlie was able to fix the tire, so that they could continue their adventure.  Char put an empty gatorade bottle inside the bike tire and low and behold, it worked.  I'm hoping sometime, Pierce can make a commercial or special ad about the benefits of gatorade for body and tires.  Go Gatorade, Go Charlie! Go Golden Gate Bridge Activity!

Pierce was lucky enough to go scuba diving this weekend.  Can you tell which diver is our Pierce?  There is no hiding that beard.  He had a great time and can't wait to go again.  Pierce's beard blog was chosen to be the cover of Instagram on Saturday. Quite an honor and a few million people "Liked" it.   Stacy had a busy afternoon and Pierce and Adelaide got to hang out together.  When she came home she found them playing out in the palm tree forest.  So fun.  What a cute Daddy you are PJ!

Our Upstairs Thiots
For Kara's birthday, she got tickets to go see the Wizard of Oz at the Fair Park Music Hall.  They went on Saturday night and had a fun time.  They had seats in the top balconey,  How lucky can you get?  Skyler said that his favortie actor in the play was Dorothy's dog Todo.  He was very well behaved and didn't miss a single one of his cues.  It's so fun to have Sky and Kara here.  I'm sure they are anxious to get their own place and settle in but until then, we are enjoying them here.

We not so Empty Nesters
Tatia sent me this picture of this nice round red Robin that has been visiting in their yard.  She says it reminds her of me and that makes me happy.  I wish I could fly around to Virginia often and peek into their windows and watch all the fun times going on at their house.  They have been enjoying a few days of nice sunny weather, however, the weather man is promising another day of cold and snow on Tuesday.  This spring is kind of tricking us this year and can't seem to make up it's mind on what season.
Dick leaves early in the morning for a week in Salt Lake.  He's been working double time this week in preparation for being gone next week.  I hope everything goes smoothly and he can accomplish all he is hoping to do while he's gone.
We have our Super Single Adult Committee Meeting at 5:00, so I had best sign off and get the final draft of the agenda printed off and get things ready to go.  I sure do love you all!  SLY Robynn

Spring Break Week

Sunday, March 16, 2014

Our Mansfield Thiots
After a fun week of Spring Break, our Mansfield Thiots decided that a trip to The Lego Movie on Saturday afternoon would finish it off perfectly.  Brooklyn and Addison are great movie goers, but Miss Harper is still learning.  She watched a bit of the movie and then was quite enchanted by being out in the hallways with her daddy playing tag.  It may be a while before she is invited to family movie day again.  She may need to spend her movie time with Grammy and Graypa who would LOVE it. It's back to school on Monday for Brooklyn and back to Pre-K for Addie on Tuesday and back to normal for Becky.  Spring break can be exhausting.:)

Our Charlottesville Granges
It was a good week in Charlottesville.  Everyone is feeling good and Miss Penny's hurt leg is nearly back to normal. They had an extra fun weekend when Cousin Jordan and his sweet wife Jamie and their darling little 8 month old Logan came for a quick visit.  Jordan had been taking a class in Washington DC and they decided it would be fun to drive so they could stop in for a visit in Charlottesville on their way home.  They were hoping to take a hike on Saturday and so they packed up and headed to the beautiful Shanandoah hills for a gorgeous hike.  They all had a good time and the only thing that went wrong the whole weekend was the fact that time went by WAY, WAY to FAST.  Before they knew it it was time to say goodbye.  Penny and Max loved having Logan there to play with and Tatia and Jake enjoyed Jamie and Jordie.  I hope they will get to do it again some time soon.

This week our Keelie was able to go on a field Tripper with her Kindergarten class.  They went to a great big store where all the workers wear orange aprons, where they sell lots of wood and tools of every kind. Can you guess?  Yes, you are correct. Keelie's kindergarten class went to the Home Depot and Keelie got to bring home her very own orange apron.  What a thrill to get to see all the fun stuff there.  I'm guess they may have gotten to build a project of some sort.  Maybe a bird feeder, or a book shelf, or something useful and interesting.  Please call me Miss Keelie and tell me more about it. Oh My, it's a trojan horse bank!  WOWSERS!

Pierce and Stacy had a bit of shake rattle and rolling in their neighborhood.  An earthquake, the first while they have been there came last Friday and the epicenter was close by making for an interesting sensation and a bit scary.  Pierce described it as having someone lift up your house and then drop it down.  Thankfully, nothing was damaged and even better, no one was injured.  This is a crazy time to be alive on this old planet.  Lots of things happening convincing me it's not long until the return of our dear Savior, Jesus Christ.  Let's be ready.

Our Upstairs Thiots
Most of Skyler's office was gone all week to South by Southwest, down in Austin and so there were not many hours they needed him to work this week which made for time to go to the rec center to work out and to swim with Kara.  Kara had a few trips to ARlington to spend time with her sisters and nephews which she loved in between looking for a job and filling out applications and interviewing.  It's kind of tricky to figure out where to work as they will be sharing a car until they figure out where they will be living.  Lots of unknowns.  It sure is nice for us to get to have them here with us until they figure it all out.  Great upstairs neighbors.

We not so Empty Nesters
We had a fun Saturday evening this week.  Dick's cousin Eric and his wife Ronda and their 3 little children invited us over for dinner and for fun and games.  They have Jetta who is 5,  David who is 3 and Hannah who just turned 2.  Talk about 3 lively kids.  They loved Dick and thought he was a jungle gym to climb on and play with.  Dick loved it.  We took some leprechaun gold with us and they LOVED hunting for gold and were actually very very good at finding it.  They loved playing hide and go seek with Dick and he was a great finder and hider both.  We left right as it was starting to rain and we had quite a down pour to drive home from Forney in.  We have been needing rain for a long time so we could not complain one drop.  It was fun to be in Forney, Texas.  That is where Dick's mother Jetta grew up and went to High School there.  We need to go back in the day light and look around better, but it felt good being there.  Thanks for your hospitality Godwin Family!
March 15, 1911 was the day my Grandma Elaine Brown was born.  This year at Grammy Camp we made her famous Sugar Cookies and delivered a plate to our cousin Pamela Elaine and her boys.  They turned out especially good this time and I loved telling the girls about my Grandma Brown how she loved to put just a little bit of vanilla behind each ear as my Grandpa loved that smell.  We each put a little behind our ears too.

Our Mansfield Thiots
Our Mansfield Thiots are looking forward to Spring Break.  The big girls are invited to Grammy Camp starting on Sunday evening through Tuesday afternoon.  You may have noticed, I'm delayed in writing Our Thiot Times this week because of that very busy and fun Grammy  Camp.  I loved having those cute girls here and we are looking forward to Harper getting on the potty train so she can come next time.  The girls promised me that it won't be long until she is ready for panties!  Yipee!!!!  I bet Becky is the  most excited of all after seven years of diapers, just a few months in between without them.  Go Harper.

Our Charlottesville Granges
Jakes rotation this month is in Richmond, Virginia at the county coroners office.  Talk about exciting times.  It involves a one hour commute in the morning and the evening, but he has been getting home in time for dinner and Tatia and the kids have been loving that.  They are also loving having an extra hour of daylight in the evenings for trips to the park with Daddy or fun walks in the neighborhood.  Penny is working on Letter L this week and has loved thinking about two of her favorite aunts, Aunt Lani and Aunt Linda.  Go Penny.  She also painted herself a gorgeous tiara this week and looks very princess like wearing it.  Good job!  Maxwell gets closer to being a walker ever day, he is awesome at walking around things and I'm sure it won't be long before he takes a leap of faith and just goes for it.

Our Carmichael Thiots
Mackenzie had a fun birthday this last week and the kids loved partying with her.The weather has been quite nice in Sacramento and our Carmichael Thiots have been taking advantage of it and enjoying some outdoor time together.  We had the funnest face time visit with them on Saturday.  Dick wasn't feeling well, but after watching Callum drive around in his Jeep and after having a cyber space tea party with Keelie, he was feeling much better.  You are good medicine  Carmichael Thiots.  Thank you!

Our L.A. Thiots
Pierce and Stacy and Adelaide took some time this week for a fun photo shoot at the beach.  I have to say, the photo I saw of Pierce TOSSING my sweet little Adelaide into the air was a little unnerving for this Grammy, but he promised me she was smiling all the way.  What a "fun" daddy you are Pierce.  Be careful with that little Lady, PLEASE!!!  Stacy has been posting lots of photos on Instagram and has had several baby supply companies contact her about being a spokesman for their companies.  I think that is what it is. They will send her baby products and she will try them and speak out about them.  What a darling little lady to try things out on.  Fun times!

Our Plano Thiots
Last Tuesday morning while  my visiting teachers were over visiting, the front door opened and in came Kara and Skyler.  SURPRISE!!!!  Skyler is going to be working for the company he interviewed with a few weeks ago on a trial basis to see if it works our for them and for Sky.  I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it will be a good fit for both of them.  It's sure fun to have them temporarily living upstairs while we see what will happen.  Kara is interviewing for jobs and enjoying catching up with her fun family.  It was her birthday on Monday and they had a weekend of celebrations.  What fun to be 22 and to like to celebrate birthdays! Kara made a gorgeous Crepe Cake for her birthday,  thirty five crepes covered in strawberries, Yummy!

We Not So Empty Nesters
Our quiet house has been quite lively this past few days.  We like it that way so all is good, but I must say, after dropping off our little girls, I was looking forward to a little quiet snoozer.  I think the highlight of Grammy Camp this year was our actual sleeping out side in the backyard in Graypa's tent.  Graypa wasn't feeling well enough but Brooklyn, Kinsley, Addison and are were all game.  The weather was perfect for a sleep out and Graypa built us a fire in his new fire pit to roast marshmallows to make s'mores.  Messy and Yummy and fun.  It truly was a Grammy camp in the tent.  We woke up early Tuesday morning and after drinking hot cocoa in Great Great Grandma Anna Belle Jarrells tea cups, and nibbling on donut holes we took a bubble bath and dressed in Grammy Camp dresses to wear to the Temple.  We checked out the Temple Walk about book and learned many new things about our Beautiful Dallas Temple which is turning 30 this year.  We lelarned that the tiles on the roof are made to last 500 years.  That's a long time and our beautiful marble came all the way from Italy.  The daffidills were blooming and the tulips were just starting to bloom and the haicents smelled soooooooooo good.  We had a wonderful morning there.  After the temple we headed to the Schemelpfenig Library for a puppet show.  We loved meeting Kinsley's mom and little brothers there.  What fun.  Oh, how I love Grammy camp.  Thanks for coming girls.

Ricky's childhood dream came true on Saturday night. When he was just 10 or 11 the group Vanilla Ice came into being.  The song Ice Ice Baby, (which should be playing on the radio currently in Plano Texas) was his favorite.  Well believe it or not, 20 years later, that band is still alive and performing and Ricky and two of his buddies went to see it.  Ricky got to meet him after the concert and said he has now crossed off an item on his bucket list.  He really enjoyed it.  (Thank you for NOT inviting me Ricky) Earlier in the week Brooklyn had a book fair. Oh how I remember those.  We loved them.  Several of our boys got to dress up as Clifford the big red dog at those book fairs.  Addison loved having her friend Vivian over for a few days while her mommy was in the hospital with a kidney stone.  What a good friend you are Becky.

After 9 wonderful days with Jakes parents and his sister Tootie, they left on Wednesday.  Tatia said it is lonesome with them gone.  Everyone is feeling better after sharing a cough and sniffles and fevers.  Penny took a fall and is limping on her left leg.  The doctor thinks it might be what they call a toddler fracture which is a slight fracture and they don't cast them and just let the child walk on it as they can.  I hope you heal quickly Miss Penny.  Tatia's calling as compassionate service leader has been busy this week.  They are having a funeral for a ward member and she is in charge of having all the food donated and served .  A sweet sister offered to watch her little ones so she wouldn't have to have their "help" while she serves.  What great people in this world. Tatia and Penny LOVED having the Sister Missionaries over for dinner last night.  In Penny's bedtime prayers she thanked Heavenly Father for sending her friends over to play with her.   I Loved it. What fun to have Sister Ence and her companion in Tatia's ward.

On Wednesday our Mackenzie will celebrate her 28th birthday!!! I'm not sure what they  have planned to celebrate, but I just bet it will be fun.  Mackenzie and Keelie have been busy this week building the Colosseum in Rome for a presentation Keelie is giving in School on Friday. I remember one of my favorite book report project of Charlies.  He had read a book, The Treehouse Adventure, and he built a tree house in a little funny tree that I bought at the nursery that was on the going out of business area.  That little tree house lived under our stairs for a few years.  Love those school projects.
This picture is missing our Adelaide and a couple of other grandchildren. Happy Birthday Lori!

Stacy and Adelaide flew to Dallas for her mom's surprise 60th Birthday party on Saturday.  It was a glorious day and the temperature got up to 81 degrees.  Now today, Sunday, we are having a little icey rain and it's in the 20's.  Crazy Crazy weather.  We are hoping, crossing our fingers that we can meet up with S & A Monday afternoon for lunch.  I can't wait to see you both! Pierce made a video with all of Oma's (Stacy's mom's) grandchildren wishing her happy birthday it is AWESOME!  https://vimeo.com/87970622  Might be the best five minutes of your day

Our San Fran Thiots
Kara and Skyler had a great week. They discovered the gym and pool at Kara's boss's hotel and between swimming and working out, they are looking a little less pale and can run a little further.

We Empty Nesters
Dick had  a good week in Salt Lake and woke up early every day and stayed up late every night working as hard as he could to get everything done he was trying to accomplish. I was glad he was there as my sweet mom went to the hospital in an ambulance on Sunday night with a low blood sugar and some other worries. I'm glad to report after taking 102 different tests, they sent her home on Tuesday to get feeling better.  Dick was able to visit her in the hospital and be there after she came home. I was wishing I had gone with Dick even more than before.
I had a Crocheting week here.  I love the way Ricky says CROW shay.  I got to make a couple of burp clothes for two friends who had new grandbabies born this week. So very fun. Dick and I are taking a Family History class during Sunday School hour.  This week we were challenged to write a story about something that happened in our childhood.  The Story of the Big Green Door came right to my mind.  I'm going to put that in another post. It's long, fill free to skip over. Have a great week. SLY Robynn

The BIG Green Door

The BIG Green Door

Nineteen sixty two brought a building boom to the little town of Sandy, Utah.  My family had just moved there and with so many new homes being built and so many children, the schools simply couldn't be built fast enough.  While a new school was started it wouldn’t be completed until I was ready to start 2nd grade.  I was bused several miles to Sandy Elementary, the first Elementary school in Sandy, Utah.

Kindergarten was so full that year, that they only offered six weeks of kindergarten to students who were five years old.  My six week rotation came in the summer of 1962. My first day of kindergarten is a day I will never forget.    My mom had a brand new baby and so she put me on the school bus to travel to that big school.  There were several neighborhood children they picked up that day with me,  Patty who  lived next door and Ronald and Renee, twins who lived just a few houses down the street.  It was a long ride picking up enough children to fill the bus and I felt quite grown up.  When we finally arrived at the school, we went inside and I met my Kindergarten teacher.  She was beautiful and her name was magnificent, Miss Sherbet, just like the refreshing frozen dessert.  I just new kindergarten was going to be wonderful.

We worked for a few hours on drawing circles and other shapes and then it was time for recess.  Sandy Elementary had a great play ground and I had seen it many times when we had picked up my old sister there the year before.  I could hardly wait to get out to playing and have such a fun time.  The teacher rang a bell and called us back inside.  I had just gotten my turn on the swing and couldn't stand to get off quite yet.  Just another minute or two I thought as I swung back and forth, going higher and higher.  I teacher took the class back inside and I jumped off the swing and knew I could catch up with them.  When I got to that big green door, it had already shut as the last students had already gone inside.  I stood there and pulled and pulled trying to get that door open. It simply would not budge.  I was not sure what to do, I remember knocking on the door but nobody came to open it.  The only solution my five year old mind could think of was to walk home.  I thought I knew the way and it shouldn't take too long.  I did feel bad leaving my new school bag in my class room, but figured I could get it tomorrow.

I started walking and made it up to seventh east which is a pretty big road for Sandy, Utah.  I had to cross over the road to get to the other side to make the turn onto 8600 south which would take me closer to home.  I remember saying a prayer that Heavenly Father would help me find my way home, but I don’t really remember being afraid.  I’m sure I sung every primary song I knew and probably found a favorite rock to kick and I’m sure I was hunting for wishing flowers to pick and blow on my way up the hill.

Something that I was not expecting but was sure glad to see, was the site of a yellow Pontiac station wagon heading slowly down 8600 south with my frantic mom driving it.  The school had called her after my  kindergarten teacher noticed someone missing.  She said it was quite a sight to see a tiny little girl walking on the side of the road, no sidewalks on that street yet.  I was one happy girl to see my mom and little brother and my big sister and baby sister who came to rescue me.  In my mind, I thought we would go home and I wouldn't have to go back to school, but guess what?  We headed right back to Sandy Elementary.  Fortunately, I had arrived just in time for milk and graham cracker.   Yummy!

I learned two good lessons that first day of kindergarten.  First, when the teacher rings the bell, don’t wait but go get in line. Secondly, that Heavenly Father is always watching over us.

Epilog:  a few  years ago, I was waiting to board an airplane from Los Angeles to Salt Lake City and also waiting to board was a darling family with two young elementary aged boys wearing Sandy Elementary School t-shirts.  I couldn't resist sharing my story of the Big Green HEAVY door.  They agreed that those doors are BIG and Heavy.  I smiled!

Yesterday I had my baby sister and my mom drive down to Sandy Elementary to see how far I had walked. It was 1.3 milesJ

While sitting in Sacrament Meeting today, I received a sweet little prompting about my story the big green door.  I found out that I was not walking alone that day, that indeed an angel was sent to walk home from school with me.  I couldn't see her but now about 52 years, I know who it was.  It was my sweet Grandmother Elaine who has recently passed away.  I just had goosebumps up and down my spine when I learned this.  Thank you Dear Heavenly Father for letting my Grandma walk with me.  Maybe this is why I love being a Grammy so much. :)

Two Genealogy Assignments

I am hijacking your mom's blog for a quick note to my children and grandchildren.  I don't have any cute graphics or pictures like your mom but here goes anyway!

We are taking a Genealogy class during Sunday School at church with Sister Debra Hadfield teaching.  We have had a couple of assignments lately and I wanted to post my results thinking that you.

Our first assignment was to become more familiar with www.familysearch.org.  In fulfilling that assignment I set a goal to post 5 pictures of my ancestors.  You should be able to login to Family Search and see those pictures. I would like to ask each of you to do that then let me know what you find.  If you have already seen the pictures that I previously posted you might want to check again as I have updated the pictures a little removing the extra white space created when I scanned them as a full 8X10.

Our second assignment was today and it was to write down 5 life events that was significant but were not necessarily birth, marriage or death events.  You will know many of these but the 5 that I chose are:

  1. I was baptized a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints on March 29, 1975.
  2. I took a trip around the world the summer when I was 10 years old. We went with mom's friends, the Collins.  They had 2 sons, Mark and Brad who were a year older and a year younger than me.  I remember cutting my foot badly shortly before leaving and I could not take my shoes off in the sand in Egypt at the pyramids.  We went on a Caribbean cruise the Christmas prior to that summer and a trip to Span and Portugal the Christmas after.
  3. I started a technology consulting business, Maverick Systems in 1990.
  4. I served a mission to Finland for the LDS Church from August 1976 to August 1978.
  5. I was called as Bishop of the Plano 4th Ward in Sept 2007 and served for 3 weeks shy of 6 years.
That was the original list for the assignment but I decided to add more items to the list.
  1. I went to Greenhill College Preparatory School in north Dallas from 5th Grade through 12th Grade.  Greg Giller who was at Greenhill those years was born the same day as I was in the same hospital, Florence Nightingale Hospital which was considered a maternity hospital on the Baylor University Hospital Campus.
  2. I went to The Lamplighter School from 2nd through 4th grade on Churchill Way just east of Preston Road in North Dallas
  3. I went to St. Michael's Episcopal School from Preschool through 1st grade. The school was on the grounds of the church on Sherry Lane just south of Northwest Highway.
Would each of you mind doing the same thing and let us know that they are?  We love you!

SLY, Dad
