Results.

At 1230 the vet called me to tell me what was going on.
he had just taken xrays, and manipulated his leg quite a bit.

Hansel has managed to break his femur. The top piece is broken off.

I pulled this xray out of google- to TRY to show you what it looks like.
The right hip is circled in white- the left is the black chunk. I did this real fast in photo shop. Basically, there is a black gap- or broken spot from where the bone broke. It's a wide gap. He said it's a 'genetic' issue, so that his legs are weaker than other animals. :(

The right side that is circled- i've put gray marks. That is where the bone in the OTHER hip looks weak. He's going to show it to the specialist when he comes in- the orthopedic surgeon - to ask him if he thinks it'll happen in the other hip.
( i think this is a dog xray)

So all we can do is keep him confined. We will keep him on 1/2 of a 5 mg prednisone once daily. He doesn't want to switch pain meds and risk causing problems, so, he will stay on that for the weekend, confined to the room. I'll take a shot of him later in there so you can see.

He is unhappy because it hurts, but the vet said he seems better today. He's not crying as much, and he let him really mess with it. They didn't have to sedate him because he was excellent for his x rays- no hissing or growling.

Prognosis-

95 % of the time, the problem heals itself. However, we have to wait 2-3 months and see how he's doing. He expects him to be walking again by the beginning of next week once he realizes he can walk on the other leg. However, he's afraid the other leg might go. IF the cat is still painful in 2-3 months, he will undergo surgery to remove that bone piece (the tip of the femur) that is causing him pain.

He is afraid with my luck that'll happen, but he said, most of the time cats are so hardy that they'll heal on their own and learn to work with it.

so now, we keep him quiet until he heals.
He still needs your purrs and prayers, because he's a very hurty kitty. But it already looks like he's doing better than he was yesterday. We will all be keeping our fingers crossed that he won't need surgery.

And my insides are still hurting and worried for him.
-mom bean.

(thanks to everyone concerned and praying with us, i will be visiting you all personally later)

Wow, that is very scary how that happened, and at least in Maine Coons, hip dysplasia is one of the things they are screened for before breeding (by ethical breeders).

While the hip surgery sounds gruesome, cats do quite well after femoral head ostectomies.

BUT, we Furrydance cats and Teri hope that Hansel heals without surgery and feels comfortable again soon

Hansel,
We are so sorry you got hurt. We are sending you lots of Eskie hugs and kisses, and welshie hugs and licks. You must get better. We are very worried about you. Can we send you a get well package? We were supposed to send y'all a Christmas card, but I got sick;and, Mommy just couldn't even make ours this year. So, Mommy wants to make up for that. Could you ask your Mommy to tell my Mommy what cat toys and foodables(a word from Mango) you might like to have. Toys that might make you feel better. We know what it is like to have a "medical condition," so we give toys because sometimes food can't be eaten(not really I think, but Mommy says I must watch what I eat, something about my kidneys. Humans, I don't understand). Please feel better, and fight, fight, fight.

Oh, so so sorry to hear about Hansel! Our former cat, Hunter, had a broken femur too. For some reason, though, the vet put a leg cast on her. Anyhow, it healed perfectly, and she was a normal cat again in no time, so hopefully Hansel will do as well!
