brother, my cup is empty, 2012, collage on paper, 50 x 70 cm

Oh Nick Cave - every song is a story.

an uncomfortable dream

an uncomfortable dream, 2012, collage on paper, 32 x 42 cm

Now on show at anna pappas gallery, Melbourne. Inspired by the beautiful song 'Flowers' by Tinpan Orange (which might sound strange, but really it was!). You might remember me mentioning the song in a previous post, when these guys used some of my work to promote the single. I think they are currently filming the video for it, so keep your eyes peeled for the amazing shock of hair belonging to gorgeous frontwoman Emily Lubitz.

The majority of this collection was inspired by music, which you will probably see seeping through the titles as I post them. It was truly a joy to put together, so I hope you get enjoyment out of looking at them. On show until July 7 - anna pappas gallery!

new work

Hello all!

I thought I'd share some new work with you today. It was originally going to be for an upcoming show, but I have changed my direction for that particular body of work, so I decided to pop it up here instead.

Happy Tuesday!

eyepatch and magical snatch

For those of you who didn't/won't have the chance to see to Janice Darling in her paper-flesh at Rooftop Art Space, I thought I better include a few 'up close and personal' shots of the works.

 the killer stretch

 waking up nutritionally

the burn

 the positive approach

 exercises for special problems

the natural approach to weightloss

Big thanks again to all who came to the launch, and have been visiting during their lunch breaks and other such things. It has been such a great collection to work on, and now I am finding it hard to stop Jane Fonda-ing.

flower face

Aaaaah. Another opening done and dusted. It was an epic night full of loveliness. This was the first work to be sold (hooray!) - I hadn't even photographed it! I have plans to get to photographing the exhibition this week, as well as getting pics from the opening up online.

In  the meantime, I hope you enjoy this work - there are still pieces available so come down/up to the gallery for a visit! I am now looking forward to an epic sleep in tomorrow before getting stuck into the studio for the next collection. Stay tuned.

would i rather be a sunflower

Where have I been you say? I have been living under a little studio-shaped rock getting goodies ready for my upcoming shows. What with this Stockroom show opening this week, I thought I'd sneak in another little preview for your enjoyment. The show is almost hung (despite a few hiccups along the way) and is looking ... pretty spiffy actually! Just a couple more works to hang and it will be good to go. The space is in an old butter factory (true story) and is spewing character from every crevice and eave. Can you have just one eave? Or must it be eaves?

ANYWAY. This work is called would i rather be a sunflower, which is based on a Tinpan Orange song (check them out - they make beautiful music). The show will be open from this Thursday, 9th Feb, and will officially open at 4.30 on Saturday 11th Feb. If you're up for a day trip, come to Kyneton for some good times!

crazy cat ladies are coming for ya

Hey all, keep your eyes peeled for a collaboration between myself and the ever talented Tai Snaith, coming to a Craft Victoria near you! It is still some months away, but demented cats are already in the making.

where have you been all my life?

Hello all - yes I know, I have been very slack on the blog front as of late. I am trying out this new thing called 'keeping it under my hat.' I'm currently working on a few new series, but as I'm preparing for two large shows next year, I don't want to blurt it ALL out as I go (gotta save some surprises for opening night, right?)!

But I'm sitting in the studio with a sprained ankle right now, and feeling quite sorry for myself, so thought I might pop up a wee preview, to brighten my day at least (and make it seem like I've achieved something further than rolling from the studio to the kitchen on my office chair without falling off - which really is my main achievement for the day!)

In other news, aqualung is now on view at Stockroom, so if you're down Kyneton way, please pop in and visit - if you come in on a weekend, I might even give you guided tour ... of that particular area of wall. I should have the shots from the c3 show up soon (still waiting on the photographer to give me the disk!) and a huge amount of work is also at the framers, which is VERY exciting - so pictures to come! So it's aaaaaaall in the works - sit tight (I sure am).

bottleneck

Yay! Pictures! I'm elbow deep in collage material at the moment, getting ready for my upcoming show Sudden Flushes of Unconscious Material (part 2) at c3 gallery in the Abbotsford convent. Yeah! I'll post details of the opening up soon!

mug shots

I reckon these dudes look like villains from a Disney movie or something. A really disturbed, fucked up Disney movie. That has mutant cats as villains. Ok maybe forget that idea all together ... I cut out about a billion butterfly wings today and glued them all down so I think the glue fumes have gone to my head ... aaaaaah ...

justin was testing his limits

Is anybody else thinking of that sound effect you get from those plastic toy pipes from back in the day, not dissimilar to a melody pop? Kinda like 'boooooooooooowup'?

No? Just me then? Ok.

Why I Eyes Ya

The past few days I've been working in tandem with the lovely Tai Snaith ... (we both seem to be holed up in our studios going crazy ... in a good way I think), so in honour of our parallel cat worlds:

There's plenty more where that came from (from both of us!) - stay tuned!

cats from long ago

I was having a coffee with a fellow artist friend yesterday, who was telling me about some collages she'd made in the past of cats with the eyes cut out and more cats' eyes behind them. Spookily (and just plain spooky) similar (we seem to do this quite often - great minds think alike?) to these works, which I thought had cats' eyes in them too ... but turned out to be a raspberry, a flower, and two birds - ha!

evolution?

This is gonna seem really strange, given the size of this work (about 14 x 14 cm), but I have been working on this piece (in a sense) for over TWO YEARS! I know, that is really silly. But I started these little fairy sheep in my honours year and had no idea where to put them - they kept coming out of the collage-material vault (yep, I have a vault) for a play on my cutting mat, and then going back in again.

Finally this wee plant presented itself while I was in Berlin - I have this feeling that these poor little bird-sheep want to eat the nectar that is at the top of the plant, but their tiny little hoofs won't let them get at it - and now I feel mean for turning them into mutants when they could have stayed birds and flown up to eat the nectar. And now I feel a little bit crazy for discussing the welfare of my paper animals.

Pussy Queen

Hehehehehehehehehehehehehehehe! (I don't think I will ever make mature work.) I especially like her little man-ferret-adviser.
