FIRST camp-out of EVERY year…

It’s TRADITION! Memorial Day weekend marks our FIRST camp-out of the year! From here on we go camping at least one to two times a month. We are so excited for summer to be here and are looking forward to adventures in the SUN. I have to admit though that we were a little nervous to go with Allie. She is in that ‘crawling-get-into-everything’ stage, and I just didn’t know how we were going to keep her occupied... not to mention the fact that she is cutting THREE teeth all at the same time. (We made sure to stock up on baby meds!) We feared the worst for weather, (we cannot remember a weekend when it has not DUMPED rain on us), but love camping, love the company of our neighbors, and were ready for a break from our everyday routines.

We headed out to the John Day Dam Friday and camped at LaPage park. It really was a beautiful park and the weather was AMAZING! We experienced some wind, but ZERO rain! We just couldn’t believe how beautiful the weather was, especially considering the fact on the way down we drove through a torrential downpour. But it is true what they say! The weather IS better East of the Cascades.

After setting up camp we went off on our first boat ride of the season.

The kids were super excited!

DSCN3793

The scenery was exquisite. It was so therapeutic to get away from the NW rainy weather.

We stopped to check-out some remote camping areas accessible by boat only. We saw a porcupine!

Love this face!

Saturday morning we woke up to this:

DSCN3820

We spent the whole day relaxing in the sun, read some books (which NEVER happens!), did a little wakeboarding, fished, played some washers and just had a really nice time doing a whole lot of NOTHING.

Sunday was a little more cloudy, windy and chilly (but still not rainy!) We left camp for a nice hike around the Deschutes area, but first we stopped by the John Day Dam…

DSCN3824

… and took pictures on an abandoned railway, which Malia was petrified of, thus the weird awkward smile.

DSCN3829

Here we are packed up and ready for our hike! This was our ‘pre-hike’ to determine whether or not we will be able to take the girls out on an overnight hike later this summer… I just don’t know that we are ready yet. Each of our packs weighed 30 pounds I am sure, and that wasn’t including any overnight camping gear yet, or all the diapers that will have to be packed out…

DSCN3832

Check out that smile… Malia LOVES hiking!DSCN3834

The scenery is so different here in the East part of the Gorge.

DSCN3835

It’s so much more brown than green.

DSCN3837

We saw a lot of birds, ginormous beetles, a deer, and one slithering SNAKE! Unfortunately my camera was put away, but we were just walking along and then BAM! A snake the length of the trail just slithered across. Apparently there is a a rattlesnake and tick watch out here… so were had our eyes on the look-out!

DSCN3842

Allie was pretty grumpy when we first put her in the pack, but soon after she zonked.

DSCN3844

This is such a silly ‘forlorn’ sort of picture!

DSCN3846

We reached our destination only 3-4miles in at a pretty view point of the Deschutes River. DSCN3847

The girlies were ready for a lunch break!

DSCN3861

Nap time! Looks like a comfy place to sleep to me!

DSCN3862

I love my Allie girl! She really was such a great camper! We expected much worse from here since she is having such a hard time with the teething. (She is cutting her other lower tooth and her two upper left ones... which is weird because usually the two upper center ones come in together, but whatever.) Allie slept more than normal and took 2-3 naps during the day instead of her usual one. When she wasn’t sleeping, she loved watching the kids play and tried to crawl her way to join them. She loved the grass, (crawling in it AND eating it), and even cruised her way between two camping chairs. Her night sleeping wasn’t too bad either. I pre-medicated at night with some ibuprofen since she wasn’t feeling well. To the other camper’s delight, she only fussed a few times at night, but went back down without trouble once her pacifier was back in. (The night before we left she screamed and cried to no avail! So we were pretty worried…)

DSCN3864

We packed up camp on Monday, and ended the beautiful trip with a sunny boat cruise along the Columbia and John Day rivers.

DSCN3865

Malia LOVES our camping and boating adventures. Allie is going to have to learn to enjoy our lifestyle too. But poor baby… she hates her life vest!

DSCN3868

Malia is such a good camper. She loves the outdoors, and loves digging and rocks. She is such a crack-up! She wanted a picture posing with her new rock friends.

DSCN3873

And I think Allie is all ready to get home and back to her daily routine!

DSCN3874

Hooray for camping, sunshine and FAMILY time. I loved that we had some quality time spent with the kids this weekend. We each got to hold and snuggle our girls a little more than we normally would, just because we get so trapped by our daily responsibilities. We can’t wait for more opportunities to run away from everyday life!

Our little grumpy monster…

teething

Two weeks ago Allie cut her first lower tooth with no problem. Well, she gnawed on stuff like crazy, but this second tooth… WOW. What an unhappy girl we have! She took 3 long naps today, went down for bed early, and was really only awake (and fussy for the ENTIRE time) for maybe an hour and a half between each nap. We tried to get her to gnaw on ice in her cool mesh feeder thing. She could only be pacified for so long… it was exhausting since we don’t really know HOW to deal with an inconsolable baby. We are so thankful that Allie is such a good baby all the rest of the time! Now I am heading to be early because I am sure it is going to be a LONG night…

Please!!!! NOOOO more yard work!

We’ve been done for several weeks now, but have had so much rain that we were waiting for things to settle before taking pictures. Look back at THIS post if you need a refresher on what things looked like.

We finished placing all the rock, placed stepping stones from the bottom of the deck stairs to the top of the stairs on the hill, built and stained this wood picket fence, planted groundcover on the hill, and replanted all the grass. It was A-L-O-T of WORK!

We also managed to plant our garden, and even tried some herbs (rosemary, basil and garlic) to help keep the mosquitos away.

We still have some finishing touches (if you notice we ran out of wood paneling there on the left) but we are DONE with any big yard projects; just in time too with summer looming ahead. We want our weekends free for camping! We talked about building a wood cover/shed sort of structure for the wood in the back, but the fence blocks the ugly view of the tarps, and the only people it bothers now is our neighbors. Maybe we’ll work on it next year. Smile

Caught between a rock and a hard place

stuck

Just when you’re wishin’ they’d get off their chubby little behinds and move, you wonder why you would EVER wish such a thing in the first place! Allie is FAST, even if it is with her weird little army toe crawl. She loves getting into her sister’s way while playing, loves touching all the untouchables, and it is NOT unusual to find Allie stuck below the ottoman, the couch, the stools… well… really anywhere!

Columbia River Renaissance Trail

We’ve always known about ‘the waterfront trail’ along the Columbia River near the I-5 bridge (Washington side), but never realized that it keeps heading east and turns into a nice 8+mile round-trip bike ride through the Water Resource Center and on to Wintler Park.

DSCN3730d

We broke tradition and headed out for our bike ride FRIDAY afternoon, and were pleasantly accompanied by Matt and Kylee. We stopped halfway through for some “park time” (Malia’s bribe for taking care of Allie in the bike trailer) and had a yummy picnic dinner.

DSCN3735

The view of Mt. Hood is so amazing on this end!

DSCN3744

DSCN3753

This isn’t the greatest of all pictures, but I love the sisterhood evident in how close they are sitting together and their look of concentration on the same object. Malia LOVES that Allie is getting older and becoming more fun to play with. Just tonight Malia heard Allie crying (she was having a hard time going down for bed) and said “Mommy, Allie wants to wake up and play with me!” We love our girls!

Not MY most comfortable sleeping position…

Ain’t no Fake ‘n Bake!

We have been fortunate enough up here (in the “lovely” Northwest) to receive TWO straight days of sunshine! Can you believe it? NO RAIN for 48hours! Amazing… It’s no wonder this little girl can pick up a tan in just one afternoon of pool-time.

Poor, poor Allie… she’s going to be a WHOLE different story...

Completing her pre-workout stretches…

“Aunty Collette looks like a Princess!”

On Saturday my cousin Collette (who was beautiful as ever) was sealed for time and all eternity in the Portland Oregon Temple. Malia was excited to visit the temple because she knows that this is where her mommy and daddy were married, and she truly believes that it is ‘Jesus’ house’. (She was excited to be sitting on ‘Jesus’ toilet’ while using the bathroom. Silly kid…)

I just love how beautiful and peaceful the Temple grounds are.

Dear Malia,

THIS is what tulips can look like if you don’t pick them while green! Grrr… Malia and her little friend next door destroyed our tulips in the front-yard. Oh well, we only have to wait a YEAR to enjoy them next!

DSCN3671DSCN3681

Girls and hats make quite the combo! But… without long beautiful hair, Allie looks like a little cancer baby. Good thing she’s cute!

DSCN3692

It was a long day… I don’t know why, but I LOVE this zonked out picture!

Bike RIDE No. FIVE

We are sad to report that we neglected to ride this week due to a busy schedule, but here are pictures from last’s week ride from Vancouver Lake to Frenchman’s Bar along the Columbia River.

Malia loved that we ended at the ‘big boats.’

DSCN3626

Allie finally made it without a fuss. She even fell asleep on the way back!

DSCN3637

Bribing Malia with a chance to play at ‘the park’ works every time!

DSCN3639

Malia announced that she is a ‘BIG girl’ now, and is learning how to pump her feet.

DSCN3643

If you look closely, Allie has a ginormous purple bruise on her forehead. She fell off a camping chair in the garage while we were building our picket fence (pics to come soon)… poor baby.

DSCN3644

And no… I don’t work for Smiles anymore. But I needed to cover up the make-up less, rolled out of bed face!

DSCN3650

I know I say it a billion times… but these girls are AWESOME!
