TYSONDOG - Eat The Rich 7'' (1983) UK

NEAT RECORDS
Tysondog were from the UK, and on this, the bands first release, play some great NWOBHM metal that has proved that they had indeed influenced the likes of Manowar, and Anthrax's fistful of metal. Epic, and melodic is how I would describe this bands true metal sound. The band supposedly named the band after one of the members dogs, Tyson.
Another Neat rec ep that I came to collect when I was young, and when metal was still young. This ep makes me remember when metal was refreshing.

Clucth Carruthers - vocals on "Dead Meat"
Paul Burdis - guitar
Kevin Wyne - bass
Peter Reeve - drums

MENDES PREY - Live At The Marquee (1983) UK

A rare live gig by Mendes Prey from London's legendary Marquee Club. This one was performed on the 17th of April 1983, and captures a great performance from the band in front of an appreciative audience, good sound quality on this show too.

EARTHBOUND - Prophet 7" (1984) UK

Here's another sole release, the "Prophet" 7" from Earthbound, no relation to the similarly named German proggers of the same era. This one flings some Christian lyrical themes into the mix, which grates with me a little usually, but in the context of this style of music, it somehow works nicely. This is a little more "pomp" in style than the AR 7", but is similar in scope and ambition, two neat tracks!

VALHALLA - Lightning In The Sky 7" (1981) UK

ASGARD RECORDS

LAUTREC - Mean Gasoline EP (1980) UK

This is a nice slab of rare black vinyl called "Mean Gasoline" by the short-lived Lautrec. Between them the members have incredible pedigree in the world of NWOBHM, Hard Rock and Heavy Metal. Try to keep up now, members went on to play in STAMPEDE, LIONHEART, WILD HORSES, MAGNUM, GRAND SLAM, WEAPON and UFO!!! Hell, that should have you curious enough, but if not allow me to inform you that this is a cracking little slice of AC/DC style Hard Rockin' and it also comes with an alternate version of "Someone To Kill" included. Would you believe that Steve Holbrook the keyboard player is now a well known clairvoyant?!!

ROGUE MALE - First Visit (1985) UK

This here's the debut album by the mighty Rogue Male, "First Visit" from back in 1985. Terrific stuff from a talented four piece band which included former DIRTY TRICKS, LE GRIFFE and DEEP MACHINE members, there's a strong MOTORHEAD influence, but there's much more melody and the choruses are pretty huge, this is a quality listen and comes much recommended. I remember seeing them live on Channel 4's short lived Metal TV show ECT, and being blown away by a set which included this albums "Dressed Incognito" and "Crazy Motorcycle".

BLACK ROSE - No Point Runnin' 7" (1982) UK

Hard working Northeastern rock band BLACK ROSE was formed in Middlesborough from the ashes of school band ICE. This act was carried along by typical schoolboy enthusiasm in the late 70's, but although ICE managed to last a couple of years, nothing much progressed, beyond the odd DEEP PURPLE cover. Three musicians from this act eager to play their own material were vocalist Steve Bardsley, guitarist Kenny Nicholson and bassist Martin Rajn forged BLACK ROSE in 1980 together with drummer Charlie McKenzie. The band first appeared on the Neat Records 'One Take No Dubs' EP with the track 'Knocked Out' and then cut this 7" single at the local Teesbeat studios, 'No Point Runnin'', a rarity as only 500 were pressed. In 1981 the band brought in guitarist Chris Watson, who plugged the gap made by a departing Nicholson. Nicholson would go on to successive acts HOLLAND, HAMMER and FAST KUTZ releasing albums with each. Shortly afterward, McKenzie upped and left, and after a stint with EMERSON, surfacing in London in NWoBHM stalwarts SAMSON. His replacement was Malla Smith. The Stoke on Trent based Bullet label signed the band for an album deal which also spawned the singles 'We're Gonna Rock You' in 1983 and 'Boys Will Be Boys' the following year. An album, also titled 'Boys Will Be Boys' was recorded and appeared in 1984, which showed BLACK ROSE to be a cut above the other local acts, a stature bolstered by constant gigging as the band supported the likes of VARDIS, SPIDER, ATOMIC ROOSTER, RAVEN, TERRAPLANE and THUNDERSTICK. For the second album, 'Walk It Like You Talk It', which emerged through Neat in 1987, Watson had been ousted in favour of sixteen year old Pat O'Neill and added ex HOT BLOODED keyboard player Gary Todd, BLACK ROSE also enrolled a new bassist with Mick Thompson. A deal was struck in America with K-Tel Records for the 'Walk It Like You Talk It' album and a projected tour finalised. Fate was to deal a cruel blow though, as the band learned of a New York based BLACK ROSE (not connected to the US outfit once fronted by CHER in 1980) who, through their lawyers, threatened to sue their British namesakes for $500,000 if the Middlesborough rockers set foot on American soil!

DENIGH - No Way 7" (1980) UK

Denigh were a first class NWOBHM heavy rock band that should have made it into the higher echelons of Heavy Metal. Either supporting top acts or on their own, they had and still have a large loyal group of followers who continue to remember the dynamic performance and great songs written by the band. This is their "No Way" 7" from 1980 on Canterbury Ace Records. The txt file for this one contains an excellent in depth band history which i found online somewhere, so no need for me to further elaborate here.

ACE LANE - See You In Heaven (1983) UK

RONDELET/EXPULSION RECORDS
Ace Lane were formed in SAXON's home town of Barnsley in 1982 by Stef Prokopczuk and Mick Clarke after they left the NWOBHM band GASKIN. Rehearsing through the summer of '82 with new members Chris Morris, Paul Brook and Roy Whyke, they played some demos to Rondelet Records and got the budget to record an album. This album, "See You In Heaven" was released by Rondelet/Expulsion Records in 1983. Radio One airplay by Tommy Vance followed and Kerrang did a good review, so the group expected the usual tour support and a budget for a second album. It never came. Unfortunately both Rondelet Records and Expulsion Records liquidated their respective companies at this time. Rights were sold to Roadrunner Records and Mausoleum USA Records and companies in Europe, Australia, Argentina and Japan, even China. But Ace Lane saw no money from these deals and the band split in 1983. "See You In Heaven", is chock full of great rock songs that were skilfully written and accessible. The production was on the thin side, but still decent enough to not hamper the listening experience. As part of the NWOBHM movement Ace Lane was definitely on the lighter side of the spectrum. But that's also what set them apart from most other bands. They existed alongside bands that were often simply trying to outdo each other with fast playing and macho riffing, but who at the same time often forgot to write real songs. Unfortunately, in a movement that for the most part catered to young rebellious males, there was little room for a band like Ace Lane. It even seems nobody really noticed them. The only consolation Ace Lane can take is that their sole release gradually became a classic Heavy rock album.

NIGHTWING - Stand Up & Be Counted (1983) UK

Bassist Gordon Rowley formed NIGHTWING in 1980 upon the demise of his former mid '70s trio STRIFE, a band that had left a cult legacy and two albums in 'Rush' and 'Back To Thunder'. Interestingly, in between these two acts Rowley was actually a member of Ritchie Blackmore's RAINBOW for one day (!) before being sacked. Chicago based Ovation Records heard a Rowley demo track, 'Barrel Of Pain', and signed NIGHTWING. The resulting 'Something In The Air' album was more of a studio project and featured three drummers, NIGHTWING managed one showcase American gig at the Anaheim Convention Center in California before Ovation Records went bust. By 1982's 'Black Summer' NIGHTWING had gelled into more of a band unit, signing a deal with Gull Records and toured supporting GILLAN that year. 'Black Summer' raised their status considerably, even denting the top ten in Germany. Ex-MOBY DICK vocalist MAX BACON joined to take over lead vocal duties from Rowley on this record, the 1983 'Stand And Be Counted' album and debuted live with the band at the Wiesen festival in Austria. Both 'Black Summer' and 'Stand Up And Be Counted' albums proved strong sellers in Europe, gaining the band gold discs in Yugoslavia and Sweden. In the former territory NIGHTWING were a major act, playing to over 25,000 people on a 1985 tour.

URCHIN - At The BBC (1977) UK

BBC RADIO UK
Recorded for the British radio "BBC Radio One" in the 1977 and never released untill when in 2004, High Roller Records released limited and handnumbered to 330 copies, silver vinyl incl. 4 Single Studio Tracks, 1 Live Track and 5 Unreleased songs taken from this "At The BBC".

(Cover Back from URCHIN LP 2004)
Urchin (originally Stone Free) was formed in 1972 by childhood friends Dave Murray and Adrian Smith. Along with bassist John Hoye and various drummers, they learnt their first songs and entered a few local talent competitions and played their first gig's in John's school. Early in 1974 Dave decided to leave and join a 'proper' band and Adrian and John met up with guitarist Maurice Coyne who was a friend of a friend. After a jam session in John's school hall, they decided to form a band and Evil Ways was born. The next step was to audition drummers and Barry Tyler joined the band. After gigging around local pubs they decided that they needed a singer/front man and recruited Dubliner Dave Hall. By this time Evil Ways were playing regularly at most of the well known London venues and in August 1976 they were signed by Nomis/Morgan (owned by Simon Napier Bell who later managed Japan and Wham) who changed the band's name to Urchin and got them a contract with DJM Records.
Their first single was going to be Without Love written by Dave Hall with Rocka Rolla (the Judas Priest song) as the B side, they were recorded in a studio in Tin Pan Alley, Denmark Street, London but were never released. Soon after, John Hoye left the band and was replaced by Alan Levett (an old school friend of Barry's). The seminal NWOBHM track Black Leather Fantasy, was released on Friday 13 May 1977 and is now a collectors item. Dave Hall left the band in July 1977, followed by Maurice Coyne in January 1978. Maurice was replaced, briefly, by Dave Murray who had left Iron Maiden after an argument. Dave decided not to stay and after playing on the recording of the band's second single - She's A Roller/Long Time No Woman - he returned to Iron Maiden. Urchin carried on and recruited guitarist Andy Barnett and later keyboard player Richard (Dick) Young. However, the advent of punk rock led to the loss of their recording contract and meant that live work was drying up as their brand of hard rock was no longer fashionable. Eventually the band broke up and in early 1980 Adrian and Andy formed The Broadway Brats - a 'punkier' sounding band - with ex members of Blazer Blazer. Later that year Adrian was invited to replace guitarist Dennis Stratton in Iron Maiden and the rest, as they say, is history.

On 19 December 1985 Adrian organised a reunion of his mates and performed the live recording The Entire Population of Hackney at the Marquee Club in London along with Nicko McBrain. Later in this recording, the rest of his bandmates from Iron Maiden appear on stage.
In 1989, Adrian got some of his Urchin bandmates and some friends together to form his separate project with Adrian on vocals, ASAP (Adrian Smith and Project). They produced two singles, Silver and Gold and Down the Wire and one album, Silver and Gold. They did not tour and split after Adrian left Iron Maiden in 1990.
In 1992, Adrian once again got together some of the ASAP bandmates to form the band The Untouchables (Adrian once again on vocal duties) which lasted until 1994 when he decided to re-name the band and hire a lead singer. This was called Psycho Motel.

SOLDIER - Sins of the Warrior (2005) UK

HEAVY METAL RECORDS
Forming in 1979, SOLDIER first pummeled their way into Metal consciousness when their demo Silver Screen Teaser hit the influential Sounds Heavy Metal Chart. Signing to Heavy Metal Records in 1980 Storm Of Steel appeared on the first, pivotal Heavy Metal Heroes album, an album that helped kick start the New Wave Of British Heavy Metal. Soldier's first single proper was 1980's "Sheralee", also a big success in NWOBHM circles reaching number 3 in Italy and receiving loads of Radio 1 support. Heavy gigging led to much interest from major labels but unstable line-ups and a shift towards a more melodic style meant the band split disillusioned in 1983. Reforming after twenty-one years, in 2002 with original members Ian Dick (guitar) and Garry Phillips (vocals), second line-up veteran Steve Barlow (bass) and Alex Smith on drums, Soldier finally recorded the debut album that never happened. The dark riffs and powerhouse vocals remain a feature and the depth of the album's 11 tracks prove that SOLDIER were the great 'lost' band of the era. "Sins of the Warrior", CD released in 2005 with the legendarious label Heavy Metal Records , return to heavy metal action from this obscure early 80s NWOBHM group.

They released several albums as Headswim on Epic Records and toured extensively with some big names.

AGONY BAG - Feelmazumba (2001) UK

BLACK WIDOW RECORDS
Agony Bag was formed in early 1976 when flautist and saxophonist Clive Jones, who had been in Black Widow from its beginning to its demise, approached the original Black Widow drummer Clive Box (better known as Bok) with the idea of forming a new band. Bok had played in both Pesky Gee! and the original Black Widow with Clive and both featured on the seminal Black Widow album, "Sacrifice". In fact, it was Bok who had been the moving force behind Black Widow's direction and presentation, which gave rise to their infamous satanic stage show.
Agony Bag were to take this theatrical presentation a step further with the introduction of costumes and make-up for each of the band members and an outrageous stage show to further enhance the musical performance. Bruce Cluley was quickly brought in on guitar and after a couple of unsuccessful bass players, Geoff Beaven came in to complete the classic Agony Bag line-up.

V/A - METAL MANIAXE (1982) UK

EBONY RECORDS
Next another NWOBHM compilation from the legendary Ebony Records label. This is the 1982 "METAL MANIAXE" album, and features the likes of CHATEAUX, EMERALD, TROJAN & CRY WOLF amongst others.
Ebony Records was one of the classic minor-league labels of the NWOBHM time, focusing on up-and-coming mid-eighties bands mostly from the UK, though a few Euro bands crept in as well. Similar to labels such as Metal Blade, Ebony started out releasing compilations of unsigned acts, a few of which went on to record albums with the label (one notable band that did appear on a comp but later went on to bigger things on another label was MERCYFUL FATE).
Many of the releases were produced in-house by label founder Darryl Johnston, giving several of the albums a similar low-budget style that nevertheless was part of the charm of the NWOBHM period. A lot of the bands released one or two albums and never amounted to a lot, but there were a few gems in there, including SAVAGE's classic "Loose 'n' Lethal", while the biggest band to emerge from this label would almost certainly be GRIM REAPER, who were snapped up by the major label RCA on their way to a successful worldwide career.
