Christmas 2010 Highlights

An Island Park Christmas Tree
Collin went to Idaho with his Dad and a few brothers-in-law. Brother-in-laws. Whatever. Anyway, they went up there and legally, with a permit, chopped down a couple trees for Christmas this year. Being our 2nd Christmas, and having just upgraded into a normal-sized-ceiling home, we could actually get a good sized tree this year. We also got a bunch of old ornaments from Collin's childhood. Love them.
Couples Christmas Party
We were able to get together with a few of our friends. Cory and Bree hosted this time at her grandparents house in Bountiful. It was so much fun to get gussied up, have a nice yummy meal and play games together. We are so blessed to have such wonderful people in our lives and to be able to spend time with them during the holidays. Love our friends! :)
Nostalgic Anniversary
Exactly 2 years ago, on Christmas day, Collin flew to Colorado to propose. Such a surprise~ I loved looking back on this post and reliving all of those great feelings and emotions. He's always so thoughtful and I am so grateful for that Christmas day back in '08. (That sounds like it was so long ago... we're totally veterans haha...) Anyway, I love Christmas because I get to spend it with my sweet hubs.

A Rothey Christmas
So, 2 years ago, the above happened, and then last year we spent the holidays in Colorado with my family (Collin's parents were in Africa on their mission, so we didn't have to flip a coin or anything to choose one way or the other). This year, we stayed in Utah and headed to Layton with most of Collin's family there. It was fun to see the similarities and differences between our family traditions. We had a great weekend with them. Luckily, we'll be able to spend some time in Colorado next week, also.
Gift-giving
Collin is seriously the best gift-giver. He doesn't like suggestions or hints, and just does his own thing. I love it, because I'm totally surprised and never expect anything. This year was no different. He completely out-did himself. Love that guy. We're also super lucky to have such generous parents and grandparents. They showered us with love and gifts. We're so grateful! My mom did an amazing job creating a book for my Grandpa Lee. She compiled letters from everyone in the family addressed to him, put them in a book with pictures and it is AMAZING! Love it. She also made an awesome bracelet with some of my Grandma Shirley's old earrings. LOVE it! :)
Christmas
I love this holiday. It's a great time of year to reflect on our lives and realize how blessed we are. I'm so grateful for my Savior, Jesus Christ! For his birth. His life. His example. His Sacrifice. His love. He is the reason for the season!

Christmas Card

We didn't do a Christmas Card or a Christmas Letter this year. There isn't a whole lot to report that everyone doesn't already know. Hence, no fun envelop to open from the Rothey's. Anyway, I just saw a pic that was taken of us (we hardly have any good ones of just the 2 of us) on Thanksgiving. So...
Merry Christmas
Love,
The Rothey's

Shout Out...

I have very talented friends. Kristy Denney and Brooke (Thulin) Bakken are incredible people and have impacted my life immensely and I love them mucho.

ANYWAY...

Kristy is a genius in the kitchen. She is always coming up with all these wonderful treats and such. Lucky for us, she is public and shares with the rest of us. She has even been featured on a rather reputable cooking blog (also happens to be her sis-in-law). So, if you'd like some ideas or just want to see the concoctions from a bff... here you go:

sweettreatsandmore.blogspot.com

As for Mrs. Bakken, she is an up and coming photog and she rocks. She has always had an eye for taking photos, and while we were roomies at BYU, I was always amazed by the great pics she'd take. So if you haven't seen her photos yet, you should go take a peak. She's taken shoots of 2 people very close to me. The Denneys (yes, the Kristy listed above) and the Griffins. So... go check it out. She's pretty much amazing.

What can I say? I'm proud of my friends!!

Booked!!

The flight to Colorado is booked. Although we don't get to spend the holidays in CO, we are able to go visit the 2nd wknd of January before Collins semester starts. I am SO excited! We finally figured out when we could take a few days off of work, so we made the plans a little more concrete with booking our flight. I was facebook chatting with my dad, which I totally love that my parents are "with it" when it comes to technology... and everything. Such a hip couple! Anyway, I'm chatting with the padre and we start talking about Christmas. It hadn't really hit me until then that it was my first Christmas away from home. He said it made him tear up just thinking about it. A few days later I was talking to my mom on the phone about how sweet my dad is and this little experience and SHE starts tearing up too. During both instances, of course, I was reduced to tears too. I have such sweet family and I'll miss them for Christmas. Don't get me wrong, I am so excited Collins parents are back from their mission and that we get to spend the holidays with them again. It just takes getting used to, thats all. And even though it's after December is over, I'm still so excited to go see my family in Colorado. Anyway... I love my family. I love my in-laws. I love my husband. I love Christmas.

Thanksgiving and such...

Thanksgiving was wonderful this year. We hung out with all the Rotheys as much as we could. Whitney and Jake (the only sibs who live outside of Utah) were in town for a while for the holiday and the Rothey Homecoming. It was great to get everyone together. Lou and Jeri gave amazing talks at their homecoming as well. Such great examples. Here are the kids and grandkids. There were 36 of us all together, I think.
Same weekend, Brooke, Michael and Brady were sealed at the Salt Lake temple. What an amazing experience it was to be there. I'm grateful for Brooke's friendship and all she's taught me. And I'm so happy for her cute family and their new steps they've taken together.
All in all, it was a fantastic weekend, full of great memories.

What a wonderful world...

Sidebar before I even start: That song always reminds me of when my dad and I danced at our wedding. Love that memory.
Anyway, I just want to express how grateful I am. I'm grateful for an amazing husband who teaches me new things and understands me so perfectly who always knows what to say and how to make me feel incredible. I'm grateful for sappy TV shows that remind me of my family and our traditions and all the things I'll be missing this week in Colorado. On the other hand, I'm grateful for an amazing family I've married into; I love my in-laws and I'm grateful for the wonderful people I can now call family. I'm grateful for a job where I can meet so many different customers and speak spanish and interact with crazy and awesome people and hear a spinoff of Lady Gaga's Pokerface with the words "Lees Marketplace" every hour. I'm grateful for great friends who keep in touch even when we move hundres of miles away!
What a wonderful world... I love my life.
Happy Thanksgiving, Everyone!

FRUSTRATION!!!!

  • That's how I'm feeling this morning! Utter frustration. My gym has let me down. Immensely. I went to my beloved 5:30am Turbo Kick class. Michelle Olsen is the instructor and she kicks butt. LOVE her. She has a knack for putting on an incredible workout while having such a blast. Anyway, she brought it to our attention that she will no longer be teaching that class. WHAT!?! Some things have changed while other things haven't changed at all.

  • I started going to Gold's last summer when they opened "pre-sale #1." It was in this little strip mall and separated between 2 units. Sort of awkward, but they promised they'd be building a huge, beautiful facility. A few months later, they announced they'd be moving to "pre-sale #2." Also in a strip mall, but a bit bigger than the first. The equipment/floors were somewhat mediocre and never really blew my mind to begin with. But alas, I continued as the devoted follower and attendee of Michelle's amazing turbo classes. I seriously live for these classed. I mean, honestly, who gets IRATE when the day after day light savings their alarm DOESN'T go off at 5am? That would be me. Anyway, they are possibly doing away with this 530am class. WHAT? You're kidding me right? No, they're not! They might do away with turbo, piyo, hustle, and maybe body pump. I don't know. But I'm not happy about it.

  • Back to this beautiful facility: It's not built yet. Obviously. "They" kept telling members that they would get the building permit in October. Well, that's in the past, and do they have a building permit? No! The earliest they could break ground is January. January in Logan? FREEZING! I don't know how much ground breaking can be done in January. So, who knows how long this Gold's will be operating with a few cardio machines, a few circuit machines, a spin classroom and a group fitness that is dwindling. No pool. No court (ie no basketball, volleyball, racquetball, etc). No showers (ok, there's 1 in each single stall bathroom). No sauna. No steam room. Am I depressing you yet?

  • Anyway, I'm so disappointed and distraught. I called to find out what the cancellation process/fee would be and they told me that there is no fee, and that I'd just have to pay through the end of my contract. In AUGUST. Really? Is there nothing else that I can do?

Thanksgiving

I love all the talk of gratitude this time of year, and it's all over the place. Church. People's blogs. Facebook. Ok that's all. But there's a lot of it, so it feels like it's all over the place.
Yesterday, a guy in our ward spoke about it. Go figure, right? He referenced Alma 34:38 where Amulek is bearing his testimony. Such a great chapter altogether, but verse 38 really stood out to me Sunday.
Live in thanksgiving daily, for the many mercies and blessing which he doth bestow upon you.
It's only naturaly to be gracious becaus of all we have been given.
Here are a few things I'm grateful for:
*My amazing husband. Obviously! I joke around and get corny all the time about how amazing he is, but try to play it off so I don't gross out the readers at home. But he just makes me so happy, I can't help it.
*My family. And Collin's family. We are so blessed to have such phenomenal examples for grandparents, parents, sibs, et al. As the 5th kid in my fam, and C being the 6th of 7, we have some pretty amazing people to follow. We love them, and all their kids too! And we miss the ones that are far away. You know who you are! ;)
*Friends. Looking back on the years of singlehood and such, I have met lots of different people and there have been so many to stay with me. If not geographically, definitely emotionally. Actually there aren't too many, if any that are close geographically. So I'm grateful for friendships that are without boundaries and limitations.
*There's lots of other stuff too, like all the material crap we have the provide such a good living for us. But the cars, and apartment and jobs. I'm grateful for all of it.
*Most of all, I'm grateful for my testimony of the Gospel and the knowledge of my Savior, Jesus Christ. He is my Redeemer, and I am blessed to have a sure belief and understanding that He lives. I love having the temple so close and being able to go there frequently with C. I love reading the scriptures with him every night, even when I'm crazy tired.
*I love my life. I'm so blessed!*

Huntsville Halloween

It's been a few weeks, but we were able to meet up with our close friends for a fun Halloween party. Rachel hosted all of us at her family's house in Huntsville (up Ogden canyon). They have an incredible house and we had so much fun. Everyone brought a fun dish, which you can check out at Kristy's food blog HERE. Kristy and Rachel planned it all. Rachel and her mom made the soups, which were SO yummy, and Kristy also put together a game night of sorts. We had the costume contest (Todd and Rachel won. Cute smurfs, huh?). Then we played Bunco. I'd never played before, but it was such a blast, everyone had a good time (I think). Here are a few glimpses from the night.
Brills: Mummy/Skeleton
Zmoos': Safari People
Blomquists: Pebbles & BamBam
"Utterbacks": Smurfs
Rotheys/Denneys: Ultra Womens Ragnar Team
Owen: First a dragon, then a skeleton for bed
Here we all are! Such a good time! Happy Halloween!

We Did It!!!

The Las Vegas Ragnar Relay was last weekend. We had trained for it for months. In fact, we probably could have trained a little more and a little harder. BUT... time was up. Ready or not, it happened. Thursday afternoon, we drove to Lehi to help pack up stuff with the Denneys, then we switched vehicles with Cory B, snagging the suburban version of Black Sabbath. Then we drove to pick up Todd (Birthday boy). His parents were fabulous and let us stay at their place in Cedar City the night before the race so we wouldn't have to drive the whole way all at once. Everyone but the Blomquists made it. We were able to spend some time together before splitting into 2 vans! Friday morning, we woke up super early to get to the Start of the Race. We got there with just enough time to check in, get our bibs and go through the safety training.
Yes! We were the special event ahead. Well, at least we participated in it. :) I can't get over how much fun we had. Our "van" consisted of Brett & Krist Denney, Todd Utterback, Emily Bussey and us! We cheered on each other and random people, like CRAZY! Honking. Yelling. Whistling. Making any noise we could. We were a rowdy bunch, but everyone loved it. We loved it and so did all the runners we passed. So great!
I was SO nervous! I had legs 1, 13 and 25... so that meant, being #1, I would start the race. So many emotions. Excited. Nervous. Terrified. You name it, I felt it. Here I am pre-race, standing behind the finish line. We started at 8:30am sharp. The guy with the microphone called out the team numbers with that start time and prepped us for the race. Quickly. There was a huge clock showing the time, and he had us off right at 8:30am. I was impressed, because I doubted we get going right on time.
Leg 1 was 5.6 miles and it was so scenic. Seriously so beautiful. I jogged along on this main road in the Valley of Fire Nat'l Park and just looked up at the Red Rock and incredible landscape that surrounded me. I loved it. One of the coolest parts about the race, too, is that everyone cheers for everyone. So, random vans would pass and honk and yell! It gave me, and every runner really, a huge burst of energy. I looked down at my Garmin Watch and my pace had changed from about 9:15min/mi to 7:00min/mi. I had to consciously slow down so I wouldn't kill myself. The cheering was awesome and so much fun.
OH!! One of my funny experiences: I turned down a road for my last straight-away to the finish line after my first leg and I sprinted my hardest, trying to run as fast as my little legs would go. I totally underestimated how far that straight-away actually was. I handed off the snap bracelet to Emily (Kristy's friend who ran with us) and came to a halting stop. Not a good idea. I think you're supposed to jog it out with a little cool down. Ya, I missed that. So I was all smiles after finishing my first leg, it was so much fun. Then all of the sudden, I started to dry heave. Haha! Sorry about the graphic details. Luckily I didn't throw up, but it was a close call, for sure. Here's Collin, being the sweet hubby he is, holding my hand as I dry heave, times three. So funny to me, I don't know why. And everyone had to get decked out for any legs run between 5pm and 7am. Head lamp. Tail lamp. Reflective Vest. I'm ready to go.
Emily was runner #2. Legs 2, 14, and 26. She was amazing. She's a trainer in Las Vegas and dominated this massive hill. I was so impressed and so was everyone else who saw her. Rockin' bod. I hope I can be as fit as her some day. Check her out! We had so much fun with her. It's funny to think that we just met her right before the race. But spending 30+ hours straight with her, it felt like we had known her forever. She's great.
After Emily, it was Collin's turn. He ran legs 3, 15 and 27. He did so well. He had a super gnarly hill for the first leg, but looked so calm and collected as he ran it. I am always so impressed with Collin and all of his talents. He does everything with ease. I was so proud of him and I'm so glad that we could train and run this race together.
After Collin, Brett ran legs 4, 16 and 28. Boy can run. We all knew he was athletic, being the BYU football player. He's always been fit, and now we know he's an awesome runner. With Kristy as his trainer, he dominated his legs. He did such a great job.
Fittingly, after Brett, Kristy was up. She had the next legs: 5, 17 and 29. Wow! A few years ago, I saw her run the Top of Utah Marathon. And now, after having Owen, she's right back at it. Look at her! She's amazing. Since we had the watches to track our pace, she had mentioned one of her legs was 7:43min/mil avg. Are you kidding me? She rocks. Seriously! Once we started the race, we came to understand one of the race "ism's." The concept of "The Kill." Whenever you pass someone, it's a kill. Whenever you get passed, it's a death or you get killed. Anyway, on one of Kristy's legs, we asked her how many kills she had. Her response: "15 or so." WHAT? She's a machine!
The last runner in our van/suburban was Todd Utterback. He was in the dorms with Brett their freshman year and then we got to be friends after they got back from their missions. So we've been good friends for a few years. Todd did a great job too. He had just finished the St. George Marathon at the beginning of October.
We had so much fun. I mean, check out these boys. As we went to give Todd some water, Collin and Brett gave him two options. No, that bottle Collin is holding did not come from our van... it was trash on the side of the road. But, luckily, as you can see, Todd made the right choice. Good job, buddy. :)
Most of us ran 2 of our 3 legs in the dark. Mine were at 8:30am, 7pm and 4am. The weather was amazing all day long. A bit toasty in the early afternoon. Sorry to Todd for getting the brunt of the heat. The rest of us relished in the perfect weather. It was upper 60s to lower 70s for the majority of the race. It only got to the mid 50s, and that wasn't even that bad. Here is our group sans Rothey's. Yes. It was super dark. And yes. At any given time through the night, someone from our team was running.

Operating off of 2 hours of sleep during the 30 hour race, I think we did pretty well. We didn't anticipate winning any awards. And we didn't win any. But I think we did well for being amateurs, and it being our 1st Ragnar. Such a fun experience, and we can't wait to do it again next year. Yes. I just said that. We want to do it again. The fun, the cheering, the smiles, the good times all outweighed the tightness and stiffness in the legs and the sore, the tired and the running. Come on! What team lays you down and rubs out your sore hammy? That's right! Ours does!

Here's our whole team at the finish line!! Our van: Collin, Traci, Brett, Kristy, Todd and Emily. Van #2: Cory & Bree Blomquist, Taylor Zmoos, Arrin Manning, Steve & Aubreigh Guynn.

IT'S HERE!!!!

I hate seeing that old post every time I get onto the blog. Maybe that means I should add a new post? Clever! Well, it's finally here! Las Vegas Ragnar Relay. We will have 3 days of work (and school for Collin), and then head down to run for our lives. Ok, not really. But it's going to be a blast! We have such a rad group of people in our Relay Group. 4 people we don't know but 6 people that we Love! It's a good thing too, because not only will we spend 30 hours of the race together, but also the drive down to Vegas and back!
So many emotions right now. I'm nervous. Excited. Scared. Anxious. Terrified. And so many other random feelings. I can't wait to take pictures and experience this race. Oh and for those of you who still don't know what the Ragnar is (even though I've been ranting about it for 6 months)... it's a 12 person relay. There are a bunch of different locations, but the one we're doing is The Las Vegas Ragnar that will go from The Valley of Fire State Park and wind around and finish at the strip in LV. Our start time is 9:45am on Friday. At any point from then until about 4pm on Saturday, a member of our relay will be running. Each of the 12 people have 3 different legs, totaling anywhere between 13 and 19 miles. Crazy? Absolutely! A blast? Most definitely!
More to come on this! :)

I'm NOT Hard Core

By all means, I am NOT hard core. At all. But we have been training for the Las Vegas Ragnar Relay. It's coming up way sooner than I'd like to admit. 22nd and 23rd of October. Even though I'm not the best runner at all, lately I have totally been obsessed with running shoes, shorts, bras, socks, random crap.
I've always loved getting new workout clothes. Something about it just gives me a bit more motivation to workout. The mentality that since I'll be looking cute in the outfit, I need to wear it more often. I have been to Sports Authority, Dick's and Al's a ton over the past month. I wish I could buy everything. But in all practicality, I'm just a snob. What do I mean? All I want is the best NIKE stuff. Not just anything. So, that means I don't buy anything. I guess that's a good thing for us, but still leaves me wanting more. I know. I'm a nerd, but those are the facts. Just sayin.

Brooke and Brady

When I had a day off, I went to see Brooke and Brady. We had lunch together and walked around Gateway. It was so much fun, especially since I hadn't seen either of them since the little guy was born. Doesn't she look amazing? Ya, she had that little dude at the end of June.
I know. I'm an awful friend. But, we caught up over our old Provo Pasttime: Happy Sumo. Delish. We spent many many lunch breaks and dinner dates at that restaurant.
Such a gem. So, it was great to go there together in Salt Lake. Brooke and I have known each other for 8 years now. Such a long time. We've been through a ton, and it's so wonderful to still be friends and be a part of each others lives.

Just a few additions...

Last trip to Colorado was fantastic. Here are a few highlights! Purpose, as always, was to see family. Jen and Dustin had Brody's baby blessing. Dustin did a great job and it was so nice. Momma and Baby B after the blessing:

After the blessing, we went to Grandma and Grandpa's house for a luncheon. Our family and the Trails all gathered and had a lovely time. We get a few pics of the twins and baby trail. Aren't they all so perfect?

I finally got a pic of Em, Aaron and their twins. Cute, huh? Love their little family... well, its not that little anymore, I guess.

Collin and I got to take a pic with my awesome Grandpa too. His memory isn't too good anymore, so my mom and Grandma collaborated their efforts to create Grandpa a book of memories from the family. Everyone in the fam wrote him a letter and put a picture with it. So this is our new pic to go with the letter/book.
Every year, Cory and Tiffany take their kids to Casa Bonita. Someone said Casa Bonita is like mixing Disneyland and Tijuana, Mexico. Pretty accurate. They have a cliff diver, haunted cave, arcade, and so many crazy things making an interesting combo. Not to mention it's in a pretty loco part of Denver. I hadn't been to the "beautiful house" in years. (That day, Sadie said... "we're going to the beautiful house today... i don't speak spanish." Funny Girl!) Anyway, the food was terrible, as always, the sopapillas were NOT a disappointment and the skiball was fab. Such a fun time.

Hanging out with the family is so great! I love going to Colorado to visit. Our nieces and nephews are irresistable.
Sadie and Jaxon doing front flips on my parents trampoline.
Ruby and Peyton (best buddies) hangin out at the lake.
SO FUN!
