Saying goodbye...

Nancy E. O'Connor
April 28, 1948~February 22, 2012

Nancy was my mother-in-law and I loved her. When you ask most people about their mothers-in-law, many times what they tell you is not positive. Nancy was the exception. She was an amazing mother-in-law. She welcomed me into her family and was always there when I needed her. She truly became a second mom. She even took MY side when Rick and I would have a disagreement. I know I am fortunate to have had such a wonderful relationship with her. For those of us that are in-laws in this amazing and tight-knit family, Nancy welcomed each and every one of us into the family and we all hold a special place in our hearts for her in doing so.

Albert Einstein said, “Only a life lived for others is worth living. “ Nancy was one of the most caring people I know. No wonder her profession led her to care for others. She was caring, but she wasn’t afraid to be honest with you. You could always count on getting the truth from her and she would tell you in a way that made you feel good, even if it wasn’t what you wanted to hear. She worked very hard, all her life, to ensure her family was provided for.

My first experience with Nancy wasn’t when I started dating Rick, it wasn’t even involving Rick, it involved Charles. We were about 12 or 13 and a friend was having a birthday party. Charles was invited. Nancy called my friend’s parents to make sure there was going to be parental supervision at the party. Her love for her children was obvious and she did everything she could to help them succeed and support them in following their dreams. She made sure her children, and grandchildren were safe.

When I was pregnant with the triplets, Nancy would check on me and make sure I was following doctor’s orders. We called her first when we had questions. She would call me and tell me the dates she was going to be travelling for work and insist that I could not have the babies on those days. It was something I had no control of, but I for sure didn’t dare deliver when she wasn’t there! The day they were born she went ahead to the hospital to make sure they knew we were coming, she rejoiced with us when 3 healthy, beautiful girls were delivered and rolled out in one bassinet to meet the family. Family always came first for Nancy and what a family we have!

Nancy went from zero to six grandchildren in less than 3 years. She took her role as grandma to heart and she constantly worried about giving everyone equal time, despite our assurances that she was. My mom and she would always joke about who the “good grandma” was- pointing a finger at each other saying “you’re the good grandma”. No matter how tired she was, how much laundry she had to do or how far she had to drive, she would make sure she visited all of the grandchildren when she was home, bringing them special treats and toys, hugs and kisses and collecting treasures from them in return. We called her when the kids were sick before calling a doctor and in less than 30 minutes she would be over diagnosing an illness or looking at a suspicious spot. We looked to her for guidance and she took care of us, all of us.

Nancy loved the simple things in life; she loved coffee, a good book, and Bocelli. She loved playing slot machines and weekend trips to Harrahs with family and friends. She loved Grace and her co-workers. She loved spending time with her family and friends. She loved making people feel special. Helen Keller said, "The best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or even touched. They must be felt with the heart." Nancy was a beautiful person and we all feel her presence in our hearts and are better people because we have known her.

It isn’t easy saying good-bye to such a huge presence in your life. We gain strength from our family and friends that have been with us over this past week. Rick, Megan, Charles and I appreciate the love and support you have all given our family. We love hearing your stories about how mom touched your lives as well. We want to thank Grace, Sandy, Vic and everyone from the Astoria, Gem, and Crown Bay facilities for the support they have given us and the love and friendship they shared with Nancy.

I was blessed to have had the best mother-in-law a wife could have. Rick, Charles, and Megan were blessed with a dedicated and loving mother. My children were blessed with an amazing grandmother. And our family was blessed with a beautiful sister, aunt, and cousin. She will be missed, but she is at peace. Her work is done and now it is our turn to take care of each other, the way Nancy would have wanted. Thank you.

For the Love of Reading...

Or maybe just killing two birds with one stone? One thing is for sure- our girls LOVE to read! Nothing makes me happier because I love to read too! Way to multitask!

2010 in Review

WOW! Is it really December 31st? Where did this year go??? I got to thinking this morning about 2010 and had to shake my head when all the amazing highlights went through it. There's no way to cover all the best moments- but here are several highlights from this past year...

JANUARY
What else can I say about January besides EMMA MADISON! We were thrilled when our dear friends became first time parents and have loved watching her grow over the year. So hard to believe that in a couple weeks we will be celebrating this little bundle of joy's first birthday!!

FEBRUARY
In February we got to meet triplets visiting from Iowa! I know their mommy through my online triplet mom group. What better place to meet than Disneyland?

We also celebrated my birthday with dinner out a couple nights, including a date night with Rick at Benihana.
MARCH
March was a big month- it started with the honor of becoming Godparents to Anthony, our cousin's little boy. (Yay- a boy!!!) We are honored to be chosen for his Godparents and look forward to watching this young man grow. He has amazing parents, so we know we will be proud. :o)

OUR babies turned SIX in March! Holy smokes! How did that happen? We had a great party at the house and made our annual trek to Disneyland to celebrate (among MANY other festivities that week)

APRIL:
We had a quiet Easter in April and had our first ever O'Connor five family "staycation". We surprised the girls with an overnight stay at one of the Disneyland hotels called Paradise Pier. We had an amazing weekend and did it with only the 5 of us. The hotel was awesome and we hope to make it an annual tradition. We finished the trip with a ride in the engineer room of the monorail train!

MAY
Whoa boy- May was huge! Mother's Day, my dad's birthday, Armed Forces Day, NICU reunion,... the list goes on an on- but by far the biggest part of May was our family trip to Connecticut! The occasion? My parents' 40th wedding anniversary! We had a big party in the same room they had their wedding reception 40 years prior. My parents renewed their vows and we got to see a lot of family. For the girls it was their first airplane rides and first time seeing Connecticut! They were great travelers! They were so happy to meet new cousins! The trip was amazing and a lot of fun! We are so happy to have been able to go. The girls ask constantly if we can go back!

JUNE
In June we said good-bye to Kindergarten! The girls had an outstanding first year of school and really made us proud with everything they accomplished. They truly loved their teacher and I know I can say that she truly loves them. Imagine our delight when she invited us to spend a day at her house! You can read about the day by clicking HERE.

JULY
Our 4th of July tradition has come to be that we head out to the Jarboe's home for fireworks and fun. Because it was on Sunday this year- the fireworks were on Saturday. Good thing Michelle checked! We were able to spend the entire next day just hanging out and they got an awesome jumper/waterslide for the girls to play on (well- the BOYS had some fun with it too!)
July also brought a NEW CAMERA for me! I'm still learning how to use it- but I love it!

AUGUST
My dad's annual fishing club picnic. Ashley caught a fish again! (She's so proud and remains the only one who has!) She can't wait for the next picnic so she can do it again.

We went to the Science and Natural History Museums. This summer ended up having fair weather and we didn't get to the beach as much as we would have liked, but we braved it one day for a few hours- just to say that we did it. Lips were blue by the time we left- but the girls always have a great time! Ashley and Madeline had ear tubes put in in July- but they didn't let that stop them!

The summer in general ended up being the summer of missing teeth. For awhile we were losing an average of one a week! I began to ask every night- "Is the tooth fairy coming tonight?" Just to be sure!

We also did our annual end of summer one on one Disney days. I love spending the time with each of the girls and like last year, each day was completely different. This year- Maddie did ALL the rollercoasters in the park- including Space Mountain and Indiana Jones. She loved them all.

SEPTEMBER
Back to School as First Graders! And guess what!?!? They got the same teacher! Our favorite Mrs. B moved up to 1st Grade! Talk about hitting the jackpot! No first day of school nerves here!

September also marked our first broken bone- Madeline fell off the monkey bars and fractured her arm. She was a great sport about it. She had a hard cast for 4 weeks and a brace for 6 weeks after that.

OCTOBER:

In October we introduced Emma to Disneyland! She loved it! We also braved Disney in the rain for their Trick or Treat night. October always brings Halloween parties and the school parade!
NOVEMBER:
In November we took another family vacation, this time with extended family too. We traveled for the first time with the girls to Las Vegas. We had a wonderful time. Vegas is a very different place when you go with kids, but still a lot of fun!

Emily and Madeline participated in a bridal fashion show for a friend of ours. (Ashley opted to not do it). They were beautiful! Watch out Next Top Model!

2010's Thanksgiving for sure goes in my top spot of all Thanksgivings! There was something about it this year- we were relaxed, our loved ones were with us and we had a snowflake making contest (initiated by the girls of course!). I haven't laughed so hard in awhile and it was good for us. Some fared better than others at making snowflakes- and that made it even more special!

This year Michelle and Mike were not traveling at Thanksgiving so we were able to spend some time at their house as well.

DECEMBER
Somewhere in the craziness of the school year, we were invited to join a girl scout troop! Girl Scouts in first grade are called Daisies. The girls were SO excited to join. They've already earned their first patch by organizing a canned food drive.

The girls and I ventured to Disneyland for one last visit of the year. I love the decorations this time of year! It was very crowded and we didn't stay long, but we will be back after the crowds go away.

We were VERY proud parents when all 3 of our girls were honored for being on the Principal's List this month. (This is a good thing!) Principal's List students have shown growth in the reporting period and based on their report cards- grow they did!

Emily lost her top tooth this month- it was her chipped tooth and I was kind of sad to see it go. She chipped it when Ashley whacked her with a hobby horse stick 3 years ago. Lo and behold- Emily and Ashley were "horsing" around (thanks Eve for the pun!) and out came the tooth!

December has been a VERY WET month for us (I better not hear anything about a drought after this!). We had EIGHT straight days of rain! The girls had a cold so we couldn't even go out to splash in the puddles. By the end of it we were pretty stir crazy (I was feeling sun deprived!) and we jumped at the chance to get some fresh air with Grammie and Grandpa this week.

2010 has been an amazing year! We just celebrated 2011 with the girls by watching the live NY feed of the ball drop. We are looking forward to the adventures that 2011 will bring us. Some we already have planned and there is always the unexpected! We wish you all a healthy and happy 2011! We are so thankful to have such wonderful, caring people in our lives. We are truly blessed!

Here's your New Year's kiss: ***MUAH!!!***
