2014 Christmas Letter

This summer I was doing some prep for fall projects and said to Kyle: you know, if we are just too busy, I could skip the Christmas letter this year. Kyle laughed. At me. He knows me and how much I love writing this letter to you all (and keeping it for ourselves). Once I realized this would be our tenth letter I knew I couldn’t imagine ever being that busy. So, here we go. Remember the days when it was only one page?

Owen (7) is in first grade – he says his favorite part of school is writing and our only complaint is that we can’t spell things in front of him to keep secrets anymore. Owen attributes his successful transition from half-day kindergarten to a full school day to: two recesses, his own desk, and the ability to buy lunch in the cafeteria. It’s the big time. He loves: food on a stick, spiking his hair up with his sweat, chess club, his soccer team, Wild Krats, strategy board games with Kyle, losing water bottles, having people over for dinner, reading The Boxcar Children, drones, and of course Legos (still) and Star Wars (still). He is still enjoying piano and seemingly sings constantly. He also has a special gift for remembering theme songs and imitating noises – you should hear him do Kyle’s electric toothbrush. Award-winning. He’s thoughtful, responsible, witty, schedule-keeping, sister-loving, inquisitive and kind. He’s an old man and a fun kid rolled into one.

Rebecca (5) is in her last year of preschool. She is basically a ninja; her sneakiness is unparalleled among peers. And except for her fear of E.T. (who she thinks may live in her closet), she is fearless. She likes to order her own food at restaurants, jump off really high things and play with matches (supervised while camping, of course). She is a self-proclaimed tomboy but loves to make “fashion clothes” for herself and her doll + stuffed animal entourage (all of whom are named Rose-something). Most of her free time is spent doing creative things for others: making art and gifts out of trash, packing snacks for visitors and all of our car rides, and planning parties and clubs. The birthday party she threw for her panda bear Rosie was the talk of the neighborhood among 3-6 year olds. She has already mostly taken over making breakfast – waffles are her specialty. She loves to tell people “tengo cinco,” and that she plans on becoming an eegy-steegy-ologist, chef, artist, cheerleader and momma when she grows up. She will still be a ninja, of course. We are thankful for her creative, fearless, gift-giving, people-loving spirit.

As “the big kids,” Owen and Rebecca also got to do some super special things like going to Disney World with Bee and JoJo (jealous? me too!), skiing for the first time with Kyle and I, dove hunting with Kyle, and driving a bulldozer with Grandpa Robert. It’s good to be 5 and 7, but #3 is joining in more and more.

Maggie, oh Maggie (3). Each of our kids makes us laugh. But Maggie is at that wonderfully hilarious 3-year-old stage where almost everything out of her mouth is giggle-worthy. It’s worth noting that she has NO inside voice – she’s funny and loud – and loves to shhhh others. Her favorite things are: reading her favorite books to us by memory, singing her personal bedtime song medley, her whale jammies, her pink plastic high heels (even good for running), her naptime tent in my closet, her bear family puzzle, all animals and babies, and Dora. She can most often be found: trying to surf Netflix and taking photos on Ali’s phone (and complimenting herself for how good they are), jumping out from behind things while yelling surcrise!, washing her hands, introducing members of our family by name and title to strangers and people we already know, sweeping, and teaming up with her sister to stall bedtime. Rebecca tells her often that she is not a Ninja – but she makes a great sidekick to one. In addition to being funny and loud, Maggie is independent, helpful, cuddly, enthusiastic, silly and usually pretty sticky.

Kyle and I have talked a lot about what a sweet spot we’re in with our kids – their ages are just so fun – separately and together. As a family this year we’ve enjoyed: a week at the beach, a week hosting Pine Cove camp counselors, camping over Thanksgiving, playing Uno, going on “family” bike rides (minus Alison: sanity break), movie nights – now a real thing, and enjoying the bounty of Kyle’s meat smoker. Yes, he traded in his dream of designing the perfect urban chicken coup for the reality of a giant meat smoker, and we’re all the better for it. We’ve also enjoyed the gift of having a houseguest that has truly become part of our family – Geanine. She will be leaving us soon to work for a nonprofit in Atlanta; we will miss her warm heart, intentionality, and playfulness.

Lastly, this September Kyle and I began a year-long leadership development course through our church. There is no easy way to summarize all we’re learning except maybe to say that we see with increasing clarity the beauty of the person of Jesus. There is truly no one and nothing better. To quote our favorite kids’ Bible: He came to show us God’s Never-Stopping, Never Giving Up, Unbreaking, Always and Forever Love. He doesn’t just point us to love - He is love. We hope you are surrounded by love this Christmas season.

With love,
Kyle, Alison, Owen, Rebecca & Maggie Mezger

Sweet little man - Jackson Jett

Every once in a while I get to take photos for a friend and its always such a treat for me. Our friends and former neighbors Jimmy and Staci welcomed home Jackson Jett a few months ago and I spent a morning with them snapping some snots.

You should see all the sweet details in his nursery. They have a great print on the wall that is the outline of TX made with the chord from ear buds (perfect because Dad is a musician).
Trying to figure out where J is going to be happiest...
Who wouldn't love being on this cozy couch with momma?
 More fun details.
Alright, since he was no where close to sleepy (best for solo baby shots) it was time to bring the whole fam together.
 Just with Daddy
 And now Mommy
Sleepy yet little guy? Let's try for some solo shots...
Back to plan A - just snuggling w/ Mommy
Its fun to look back on these since he's getting bigger and cuter every week. A favorite family for sure!

Happy Halloween from Emmit, Ninja and Cheerleader. Plus has anyone seen Waldo? Or his wife?

It was time to catch up again - they're out of order - but there's some kiddo/fall updates as well as a Halloween. Happy November to you and yours!

It was nice to have the Bridges party the night before Halloween so on Friday we just got to focus on the kiddos and trick-or-treating. We're getting ready...Ninja - check! Emmit from the Lego Movie - check! Cheerleader Maggie??? Oh, she's, ahem, Maggie are you pooping???
The whole gang. Kyle is Waldo from Where's Waldo (hopefully you can tell) - and I am technically his girlfriend Wenda. But since nobody really knows who that is, I'll just say I'm Waldo's wife. (I was so on top of it and ordered most of what we needed for costumes back in the summer...but then didn't try anything on until the day before and my Waldo shirt was obscenely too small (and Kyle's way too big - see his rolled up sleeves?) so I made a quick tutu and put the requisite denim on top.
With Bee!
With Geanine as Witch Mary from Hocus Pocus.
So lucky to have Bee to hand out candy at our place while we hit the streets!
Anybody seen Waldo?
Waldo and Dr. Murray.
A selfie w/ my big camera - couldn't believe it worked! (My mom says we're starting to look alike - like those old couples who eat dinner together at 4pm!)
After some trick-or-treating we ended up at a neighbor's party for a minute - they had bobbing for apples and Rebecca was (no surprise, really) very good at it!
And what successful Halloween doesn't end with a year-old dinosaur pinata??? (Thanks Waldo.)
Bridges brought this pinata last year for the party and we ran out of time so they took it (which broke Rebecca's heart) - when it came back this year and we ran out of time again they graciously left it so our kids could do it. Rebecca was very intense.
By this point Maggie was in nothing but undies (so no photo) - she and Owen could both learn a thing or two from Rebecca when it comes to pinata-ing!

Nana dropped by to say hello and see everyone in costume - she even took a couple of swings! Kyle had a little too much fun moving it around on her!
Then Owen got a chance to keep it from Kyle!
We may have to be start a neighborhood pinata tradition next year!

To let our candy-coma fully settle in, we got into jammies and snuggled on the couch to watch Charlie Brown's The Great Pumpkin to cap the (late) night off.

Sisters

We used to only talk about two "groupings" of kids in our family - "the big kids" (O & R) and "Maggie" - but now there is this third group - "the girls."
Sometimes they are so sweet to each other and I can look ahead to when they're all grown up and are best friends in a way only sisters could be...
Love.
And then there is this...
Which leads to this. (Time out for each of them a few minutes apart.)
Okay, back to playing whatever little game sent you both to time-out.
Post-preschool-Halloween fun. And by fun I mean no-candy treat-bags filled with things like tiny boxes of raisins, plastic junk toys I'm going to throw away as soon as I can get my hands on the bags, and a new toothbrush. Wow, the funness is overwhelming. ;)
But the face-painting is pretty epic. Rebecca is some sort of cat.

Maggie has giant hearts on her cheeks - so appropriate!
Smiles.
Starting to crack each other up.
Up close and personal.
They even have a couple of "games" that are just theirs.
  • UP AND DOWN. In the car, Maggie says up and down over and over again and they put their arms up and down to the rhythm. There is no end. And the giggling is big time. Maggie clearly came up with this time, but Rebecca gladly participates.
  • BABY STATION. I think this was Rebecca's brain child. They take a bunch of pillows off the couch and make a relatively small "bed" for "the baby" (Maggie) and Rebecca says "motherly" things to her.
  • LET'S DO LOVE - LUUUUUUUUUUV. Not sure who came up with this one. They say all of that: Hey Maggie, let's do love. Luuuuuuuuuuuuuv! Then they put their faces really close together, and say luuuuuuuuuuv over and over again and laugh hysterically.
