Psalm 78: 7-8 "Then they would put their trust in God and would not forget his deeds but would keep his commands. They would not be like their forefathers---a stubborn and rebellious generation, whose hearts were not loyal to God, whose spirits were not faithful to him." (NIV)
I see three "would" statements and one "would not". Each generation has a choice. It's easy to look around and criticize our present generation as being "lost" and unfaithful to God---a people characterized by rebellion and who have turned from God. But are we really worse then other generations? These words were written 1000's of years ago. Things don't seem to change much in the long run.
When I look around among the people I know personally I see many who are loyal to God and who are trying to live faithful lives and pass on that faith to yet another generation. I've heard it said that when the Baby Boomers die so will Christianity. I don't agree with that. We are not the last faithful generation and Christianity will never die. God's Word doesn't live in a certain generation. God's word is truth. Truth doesn't die. It may get ignored by a large portion of the world, but it can't die.
God's word in Christ will always have followers whether they are in the majority or the minority. I see plenty of believers coming up behind the Boomer's generation. The world wants us to believe it is winning, but the victory already belongs to Christ and always will!
Each new crop of believers reads words in scripture like these and vows that they will not be part of a faithless generation like those in the past. We embrace the three "would" statements instead. We will trust in God! We will not forget his deeds---especially sending his Son, Jesus to die for us! We will keep his commands!
If every Christian passes on his faith to at least one other person, the faith will not die. Christ is the head of the Church! It is his Church and he has already overcome the world! He didn't stay dead after the crucifixion and he won't die now because the world thinks he should. He is alive forever! Thank you, Lord!
