Board Exams and Chairs

So I titled this post "Board Exams" because today I finally found the patient I have been looking for to meet my Regional Board Exam requirements (after screening about twenty people). I was elated when I came home from school today.

Tragically, my patient just found out that he will be out of town during my exam. Now I am back to square one, and very disappointed. At least he didn't call me at midnight, right?

During Spring Break, while I studied for my National Board Exam, I sat outside and watched Dave start a new project that is long overdue: our kitchen chairs.

Dave's sister gave us these chairs around 4 years ago right after we were married. Now that Dave has a lot of free time, he decided that it is time to strip, restain, and reupholster our chairs.

This is what they first looked like. Not too bad, until you look closer.
They were painted black in the hot Texas sun and the paint bubbled and became really sticky, which is why we inherited these chairs in the first place.

Six hours later, this is what the chair looked like after stripping off the paint. Our dreams of having stained chairs were looking slim. It looked like we were just going to have to sand it, and then repaint it black because it seemed impossible to remove all of the black paint.

However, we found some stuff that removes all of the extra paint with a lot of elbow grease and patience. After both of us working on one chair for about 12 hours, this is what it finally looks like.

Of course, we still need to stain the chairs, and then pick out the perfect fabric to staple on, but we're waiting to buy a table first and then stain the chairs to match.

The reason why I'm so proud of that one chair is that it is very uncharacteristic of either one of us to figure out how to do something like this, because we normally don't care. However, it is characteristic of both of us to try to remove every single piece of paint. We're just weird like that. I'm glad we got it to work.
