BLOG IS THE NEW BLACK
I just started taking photos of stylish people at clubs for a fashion blog on the Internet. Instead of a beer in my hand, there is a camera, capturing street fashion at its most glamorous. Street fashion, a phenomenon these days considered one of the most influential factors for designers worldwide, is a way of showing how high-end fashion and everyday lifestyle is combined. How what you see on the runway, is made to something completely different depending on a persons personality. Today there is a set of people making street fashion, from the streets of Tokyo to New York, available on the net. These are the fashionbloggers, rockstars of 2008.
So what is it a fashion blogger does? What makes them so important and influential in today’s world of fashion? First of all, a fashion blog isn’t that different from the fashion magazine, but instead of the idea of daydreaming from the glossy world of magazines, the blogs give you fashion in a slice of life. Fashion bloggers are not ruled by money and sponsors, but by they’re own opinions and preferences. And where magazines don’t give room for up and coming designers, bloggers do. First and foremost, bloggers of today are “prosumers”, consumer turned producer. How? By telling their audience what they wear and what they think are the new trends. They are the first people to pick up new trends from the streets and report it. And the more bloggers write about a trend, the more trendy it becomes, until suddenly a designer picks it up and uses it for his next seasons line. And all of a sudden, biker boots are hot again!
From just being a hobby, some fashion blogs are big business, either making money on commercial or receiving products from designers. For companies who wants to profile themselves in trendsetting environments, sponsoring a fashion blog is a good solution on communicating with the leaders of opinion and trendsetters. The Varner-Group, a dominant clothing corporation, says they use fashion blogs not only as a line of communication, but also as an inspiration for their new collections.
You may think, that since you never heard about fashion blogs, they can’t be that influential. Well, Scott Schuman, also known as The Sartoralist, has 45 000 daily hits on his blog. He was well known in the fashion industry, and started noticing the average guy on the street being just as stylish, or even more, then the ones in the fashion elite. There was a difference between glossy fashion, and street fashion. Even here in Norway there’s a lot of good examples of fashion blogs, giving you the latest trends from the Norwegian lifestyle. One of the most read is www.oslonights.no. The blog takes photos from the nightscene in Oslo, Bergen, and Trondheim, because, as the founder Tonje Skjervold says, it’s the time of the day where people dress the most edgy and daring.
The fashion blog can’t be ignored. It is creating a new voice in the fashion business, making it more dynamic and is responsible for the democratization of one of the biggest industries in the world.
