Getting Ready for Another School Year

How fast this summer has seemed to have flown by! It seems like yesterday we were just getting ready to start our summer with a vacation to the beach and now it's time for the kids to go back to school.  We had a great summer, but of course it never feels long enough.  Kellston is now 5 weeks old and Braylei has been in school for two weeks!  I can't believe she is in first grade already!

Braylei is so excited to be back at Brookstone this year and she has a fabulous teacher named Mrs. Collier.  She has several kids in her class this year that were not in her class last year, but she knows most of them pretty well so she is happy.  Her best friend Catherine isn't in her class this year, but she still gets to see her at P.E., music, and on the playground.  She is also doing dance, gymnastics, and Girl Scouts with several of the girls from school again this year.  She has been so happy to be back at school with all her friends and is looking forward to a great year!

Ready to go!

Doing her first assignment

The night before her first day of school, Bray was so excited that she had a hard time falling asleep.  Like always, she was reading before bed and went I went in to check on her that night she had fallen asleep while reading.  I couldn't resist taking this priceless picture!  Brix was pretty cute sleeping too!

The morning of her first day went pretty smoothly.  I got up extra early and made Bray her favorite pancakes, turkey sausage, strawberries and juice.  Jeremy had to be to work at 5 am that morning so since he didn't get to see her before school, he made sure to call and wish her a happy first day!  She ate, got dressed, and was ready to go well before we needed to be there, but we went early so I could walk her up to her classroom.  She only had a half day, so when I picked her up we went to lunch at Chick-fil-a with her best friend, Catherine.  When I asked her how her first day was she said, "Fabulous!"  As is our tradition, there was a new book and a small treat waiting for her on her pillow when she got home and for dinner that night we had her favorite meal: spaghetti and meatballs.  Overall, I think she had a great first day!!

She kept telling me that the light was too bright!

Since Bray has been in school it has been fun to spend some time with Tayscen before he starts school this Tuesday.  We have still been working on his school work from over the summer, but also playing outside, swimming, and playing Star Wars - his new favorite thing right now.  In fact, Bray is really into Star Wars too and for the last two movie nights the kids have chosen to watch Episode One while dressing up and yielding their own light sabers!

Taysce had his meet the teacher day this past Friday and is so excited to be in Mrs. Pruitt's class!  After we met his teacher, we practiced walking to his classroom, looked at the playground, checked out the library and cafeteria, and upon Tayscen's insistence used the "big boy" bathroom.  His first day is this Tuesday and he can't wait.  I of course have mixed feelings about him going to school already, but he is overly ready and I know he will do fine, just not sure if I will:)

Kellston has been growing like crazy and as of Thursday (the day he turned 5 weeks) has officially outgrown his newborn clothes!  We joke that he is now the size Tayscen was when he was born.  He is starting to stay awake more throughout the day and still sleeping really well at night, only getting up once to eat and then going right back to sleep.  He moves around a ton when he is on the floor and is really good at holding his head up.  He is also extremely strong and sometimes it is hard to change his clothes because he holds his arms so close to his body and it is hard to move them away.

This past week he had an unfortunate incident with his skin.  The doctor prescribed him some antibiotic cream for his face because he developed impetigo (a staff infection), which we put on that night.  About 2 in the morning he woke up screaming and never really went back to sleep.  We couldn't figure out what was wrong with him but the next morning around 9 am I noticed that his eyes were swollen shut and he had hives all over his face.  I took him in to the doctor and they determined he had an allergic reaction to the antibiotic, so they had to give him some benadryl, hydracortizone cream, and a new antibiotic.  Fortunately, he is doing so much better and back to his happy little self.  He did just break out in a new rash on his body, which we now think is an allergic reaction to the laundry soap we have been using.  It seems he is going to be our extra sensitive one!

All in all, we are enjoying life and couldn't be happier with our little family!  We had a great weekend taking Kellston to his first football game at Braylei's school and working on projects around the house.  We are so grateful to have my mom here with us (this is her last week...tear) and excited to have my dad come out this week as we get ready to bless Kellston next Sunday!

Kellston Brennus Schroeder

This summer has been full of trips to the beach, outings with friends, swimming at the pool, visiting far away places at the library, gymnastics, art classes, cheer camp, dirt camp, music camp, around the world camp, and much more!  Braylei and Tayscen have also been busy learning lots of new things and helping around the house.  They have each been responsible for doing chores around the house, reading their scriptures, completing pages in their workbooks, independently reading, and writing in their journals on a daily basis.  In a matter of only four weeks, Braylei finished reading 25 chapter books and Tayscen learned 25 new sight words!  We couldn't be more proud of both of them!  Brixlyn also helped complete chores around the house and kept herself busy "loloring" (coloring) while the kids worked in their workbooks.

Besides all the fun things we were able to do this summer, our most exciting event was welcoming our newest recruit into our family!  Kellston Brennus Schroeder was born the morning of July 21 in Ft. Benning, Georgia at Martin Army Community Hospital.  He was 6 lbs. 12 oz. and 19 3/4 inches long.  We couldn't believe how small he was!  The delivery went great and we couldn't be happier with our little family!  We were fortunate enough to have my mom with us to help with the other kids (Thank you so much Mom!) and only had to stay in the hospital for one night!  Gotta love being married to a doctor who works at the hospital:)

The kids were able to come and visit their new little brother soon after he was born.  They were all so excited to meet him and couldn't get enough time holding him.  We weren't quite sure how Brix would do with the baby, but to our surprise she has had no problems and loves to help change his diapers and lay on the floor with him during tummy time.  In fact, all the kids have been extremely helpful and love to do anything they can for him.  Tayscen and Braylei have been big helpers with holding him and keeping him happy so mommy can get a few things accomplished:)

We were blessed to have Jeremy off for 10 days after Kellston was born.  The wonderful wives in the residency program with us also brought us dinner for the next week!  It was so nice to be able to bond together as a family and not have to worry about anything.  Unfortunately, all good things come to an end and Jeremy has since returned to work and his 15 hour days.  We are all doing wonderful, though, and gearing up for school to start in a week.  Braylei and Tayscen both can't wait and say everyday how they wish it was time for school.

We feel so blessed for all the well wishes we received when Kellston was born and for all those who provided countless acts of service to us.  We are so in love with our new baby boy and were especially humbled to be able to name him after my beautiful niece Kelsey, who passed away in March.  We know she took good care of him before he joined our family and truly feel that he carries her spirit with him.

Kellston is now 2 weeks old, weighs 7 lbs. 6 oz., and is 20 inches long.  He is able to lift his head really well and is starting to be awake more.  It is so fun to see him look at things and watch him grow everyday.
