Surprise snow day...

We woke up this morning, rushing about getting ready for church, and never even glanced outside. It wasn't until we were putting on our shoes that we realized our neighborhood was dusted with white powder. We bundled up, and headed out. Our church parking lot, normal bursting at the seams, was practically empty. The roads weren't too bad in the morning, but after church the freezing rain started and things were a bit slick.

Back at home the kids watched the snow and ice fall (and I secretly hoped for a snow day on Monday!).

After lunch began the constant in-and-out stream. Clothes on, outside, back inside, clothes off (now dripping wet, of course), warm up, clothes on, outside... It lasted from until the sun set. It is amazing the entertainment that an inch of snow and a little bit of ice can provide.

There was just enough snow to try out her new skies...

...and do a little sledding with the neighbors.

New Year's Day...

Our traditions for New Year's Day are much the same as they have been for the past 10 years. On our way to Newberg (from another fun night in McMinville), we were all enjoying another beautiful blue-sky day in Oregon. I honestly can't remember the last gloomy January 1st. It was only made more glorious by the fact that we are coming out of the wettest month in Portland history and have seen nothing but gray skies for weeks. What a great way to start a new year!

Back at it...

It is June 10th.
It is the first day of summer vacation.
It is sunny and 80 perfect degrees outside.
And yet, I'm blogging.

Don't get me wrong. I did spend the first five hours of my day in the back yard... pulling weeds, trimming bushes, cutting down trees. But now my arms are scraped and puffy, my eyes are swollen, I can't hear out of my left ear, and I can't breathe out of my nose. I'm house-bound by my allergies. I love spring!

So in my free time I'll make an attempt to catch up the blog a bit (in case there are any readers remaining).

Quick glance :: May...

Our first neighborhood fire and s'mores night! (AKA a really fun way to burn our yard debris "legally.")

Council Crest "hike" on a beautiful day in Portland.
Wunderland for Merrick's birthday... his choice, of course.

 Major bedhead!

Grace did a Flat Stanley project for school. Kelsie and Charlie took Stanley and showed him the sites of Toronto. Grace loved taking in all of the pictures that Kelsie sent back and got to show her class many landmarks that she had seen herself just a few months ago.

This sweet girl is growing up quickly. Thankfully, she'll still fall asleep in my bed while I read to her.
Isaac and the slide. He climbs up, but then waits until everyone is watching (and counting for him) before he'll go down. Silly boy.

A different kind of kitchen helper... He licks the bowls, beaters, spatulas, etc. I haven't found a dough or batter he doesn't love.

Grace's spring program at school this year was called Arkeology. It was a cute spin on the story of Noah. As usual, the performance was fantastic!
These two - buddies since birth - and now at the same school. I love watching them grow up together.
Fake sleeping... a new fun game he plays.

Isaac has a little crush on baby Elsie...
 ... I do too!
He still gives sweet kisses on demand.
We had breakfast at Bob's Red Mill to celebrate grandma's birthday!
Grace loves having her brother visit school.
 Practicing for the talent show.
Finishing her insect project in the 11th hour.
We released 1,500 lady bugs on our plum tree that was covered with aphids. Not sure if it will fix the problem, but it was fun to watch our little bug army marching up the trunk of the tree in search of food.

When he is happy, he is SO happy!
Bike safety class with the Brownies!

It took a year and a half to get hair, and about 30 seconds to cut it off. Considering he doesn't sit still (ever!) he did a pretty good job.

 Dare devil at the park...
...not sure where he gets it though. =)
Speaking of hair cuts... I think this girl will be next!

Another game! We look forward to soccer season because it forces us to get out of the house without the kids. Plus, the games are fun too.
I love spying on my kids while they sleep. He sure loves his dino guy.

Quick glance :: April...

Oh April... I blinked and you were gone.

I've said it before, but Isaac loves being outside. If it is raining, he's happy in the garage. I think he just likes the change from his usual. He will sit for a long time with a ball, dropping it between his legs, and then catching it after one bounce. It is pretty impressive, really.
Grace's favorite meal to make for our family. Pan pizza - brimming with all sorts of toppings. It tastes even better than it looks.
Claire got to enjoy a date with Merrick that included Paddington, Panda Express, and drinks and games at Insomnia. She had a great time!
Another Timbers game and another beautiful night in downtown.

We spent the first half of Easter in Lake Oswego at my parent's house, and the second half in Newberg at the Dief's house. It was a busy, packed, perfect day. Also of importance... Easter is the last day that Isaac crawled. He'd been capable of walking for months, but just preferred crawling. On Sunday night he walked back and forth through the Dief's living room all evening and that was that.
Not that she needed it, but Claire loved the kindergarten open house. She knows every face, every name, and every nook and cranny of the school. So different than when we did the same event with Grace three years ago.
Isaac - now walking everywhere - is seeming so much older. Not much baby left here.
We had a fun Saturday night out with college friends to celebrate Justin Burch's birthday. Plus, it was our first experience with Brazil Grill.
Isaac discovered the "little green men." At about this same age, Claire was obsessed with these little glow-in-the-dark aliens. Kelsie's mom bought us a whole pack. Now that is what he carries around wherever he goes... the car, his bed, the bath... they are everywhere!
A fake sad face. The face I get when I say no to something he wants. Along with the face he makes a horrible whining noise, but then will stop and look at me (I can only assume he is checking to make sure I'm still paying attention to his misery).

Our teacher appreciation week typically falls in April, and this year we had a blast taking the staff out to Tilikum for a little challenge course adventure. I think they had a great time... I know I did. A sunny day at the camp just can't be beat.

Isaac's naughty curious side is starting to show a bit.

 He still loves hats!

We spent a quick, fun weekend in Sultan to celebrate Melaney's birthday. The kids loved spending three whole days with their cousins!

On Saturday we all drove into the city and went to the Pacific Science Center. I haven't been in a few years, and really enjoyed it. The kids liked some exhibits more than others, but all-in-all they had a great time.

When we were done at the museum, our family (and the two big girls) walked down to the waterfront and explored Pikes. It was just closing up for the day, but we didn't mind because we were really just checking it out and not intending to do much shopping.

Piggy-back rides down the stairs are a new favorite. I am not ever sure he meant to get a ride the very first time. I was sitting at the top of the stairs putting on my shoes and he just leaned in. I snapped a pic and then carried him down, much to his delight.
He takes sidewalk chalk very seriously.
For Brennan's birthday we all had dinner at Pietro's Pizza and then played laser tag. The kids had a GREAT time with their cousins!
Grace's class did the story of Moses for chapel. It was really cute. I love how much these kids like each other.

My garden "helper." He is going to be sad the day I put seeds in that beautiful dirt and he is no longer allowed to dig.

Hmmmm... He must be hungry.
For the last three weeks of April we had no internet access at home. Usually we could handle that, but it was a busy time for Merrick at work, I was in the middle of an event at school, and we couldn't do anything from our house. Not convenient timing.
