Wild Mile

Had some wild miles yesterday, a off-road kiara trail run (run - 1hr 45min; total - 2hr 30min; sesat - 45min) . Plan was to get accustomed with the trail, but we ended up with marvellous sessions of fartleks & interval runs. The culprits were confusing maps & trails (semesti bukan salah kita) We had about 8 in a group, 2 girls.
Started with quite a fast pace. I was gasping for breath trying to follow the guys. My pace in trail running were usually slower. There were 6 other guy runners, being our guide; sweeper & photographer. End of trail, I met some corezone gurls doing their jungle run as well. They are active, i have seen them at bukit gasing and other trails as well.
Really had fun time running with them, all sorts of jokes & tricks blasted while energy bursted to the max. Some wanted money refund; while some other wanted to only buy tshirt for the coming Solomon trail run =) kelakor. Kaki longgar jap after the run. Then, i rushed back for a massive spring cleaning in the house & visited gramma =)

Flat road was still ok (Bt 14 to start of Perez climb); then I was left behind during the climb. Going to Bkt Hantu was same too; being left again. But i enjoyed the sun & sweat & everything sweet. I am wondering if I am fit; as it is hard to gauge myself now =)

Single Sculler

What a single scull/double scull looks like. Check out her muscle =) meleleh air liur :P Actually, scull(2 oar per person)/sweep(1 oar per person) are boats for rowing.

Myth : Rowing uses more on upper body
Facts : Rowing emphasizes more on lower body; then whole body workout

Most overseas rowers (especially full time rowers) are excellent athlete. Rowing requires both aerobic & inaerobic as well as explosive & endurance muscle. Hence, during off season, rowers usually goes for mountain biking, triathlons, runs etc. They are good in those as rowing itself are demanding enough. A complete session of rowing would require - on water training(boat); ergometer (indoor rowing); gym (strength endurance/explosives); additional steps running (Batu Caves) & occasionally running.

This post is just to bring a closer look into this well-known sports worldwide, but not here in Malaysia. Unless we are able to bring medal for Malaysia, it would be a just-another-sport here.

Back to rowing; it would be an excellent form of exercise if you would like to cross train. From rowing itself, at times I felt it helped me alot in other sports especially trail running & biking. Its movement would require usage of major leg muscle (quads etc) ; then core & body. It acts like a mini gym session as well when you row. Its movement is always leg-hand-core(pull) then core-hand-leg(release); hence an overall body workout. Unlike running/biking which is injury prone, rowing is free of impact.

Guess how i survived my accident? It was through rowing that I tried maintaining my form. Though da lembek skang, still, it helped me from ballooning =) I was equally shocked when I thought it was almost impossible to maintain my weight (cepat gemuk; actually suka makan); but i nailed it. Though still heavy, i think at least i prevented from being fatter.

Go & try out ergometer (indoor rowing) for those who has gym access. As the machines there are seldom used. An hour of rowing is equivalent to burning calories of 1 hr's run. For further info, try rowing these websites (hehe, try surfing)..

Sinking Ship

JAKARTA (Reuters) - A ferry with 213 people on board sank off Indonesia's Riau islands on Sunday after being battered by bad weather, killing at least one person, police said.

Search teams are looking for survivors from the Dumai Express 10 which was sailing from Batam near Singapore to Dumai, a port in Riau, when it ran into massive waves, Riau police chief Puji Hartanto told Metro TV.

Rescuers recover body of a victim from a sunken ferry off Indonesia's Riau islands November 22, 2009. An overloaded ferry sank in bad weather off Indonesia's Riau islands on Sunday, killing 29 people, while 245 passengers survived the accident, officials said. (REUTERS/Stringer)
Survivors were spotted floating at sea, Hartanto said.

Separately, another ferry, the Dumai Express 15 with 278 people on board, ran aground after it was hit by large waves, said Riau police spokesman Yasin Kosasih.
All passengers and crew survived, he added. The ferry was travelling between Batam and Moro island.

Indonesia relies heavily on ferry services to connect the many islands in the sprawling archipelago.

But accidents are common, largely due to years of under-investment in infrastructure and a tendency to overload ferries. THE STAR

Check out the above news. Just half a year ago, i took the same ferry. It was horrible. Had an assignment over at Dumai, & ferry was the fastest way. I felt like an immigrant. Having to cramp among them, pushing & screaming away to get in & out of ferry. In fact, I went twice on this ferry. First experience was horrible. They shut the engine down while we got out from the ferry. Things worsened when we had to queue at the exit to pay some tax. We were stuck for 1hr inside, suffocating away. Second experience werent much better either. Maybe because it was overloaded, it took 6hrs to reach, instead of 4hrs as usual. Just horrible. Thank God I am alive =)
p/s: jom g bercuti2 Dumai =)

Kisah Kiara (KL MTB)

KL MTB was fun. I ajak my friend; Wan to the race. Last year he got overall 17th for Men's 18-30. They have heats as there are many men joining. Only top 15 qualify for Final. So, this time, packaged the thing & challenged him to get better position. In fact, he did better this timing, but not me. However, he was 2 spot away from going to final. My fitness was totally out, I did 1 minit longer than last race. Tu ler, rehat & manja sgt =)

Watchout Workoholic

From the Internet

What killed Ranjan Das and Lessons for Corporate India

A month ago, many of us heard about the sad demise of Ranjan Das from Bandra, Mumbai. Ranjan, just 42 years of age, was the CEO of SAP-Indian. Subcontinent, the youngest CEO of an MNC in India. He was very active in sports, was a fitness freak and a marathon runner. It was common to see him run on Bandra's Carter Road. Just after Diwali, on 21st Oct, he returned home from his gym after a workout, collapsed with a massive heart attack and died. He is survived by his wife and two very young kids.

It was certainly a wake-up call for corporate India. However, it was even more disastrous for runners amongst us. Since Ranjan was an avid marathoner (in Feb 09, he ran Chennai Marathon at the same time some of us were running Pondicherry Marathon 180 km away), the question came as to why an exceptionally active, athletic person succumb to heart attack at 42 years of age.

Was it the stress?
A couple of you called me asking about the reasons. While Ranjan had mentioned that he faced a lot of stress, that is a common element in most of our lives. We used to think that by being fit, one can conquer the bad effects of stress. So I doubted if the cause was stress.

The Real Reason
However, everyone missed out a small line in the reports that Ranjan used to make do with 4-5 hours of sleep. This is an earlier interview of Ranjan on NDTV in the program 'Boss' Day Out':
http://connect.in.com/ranjan-das/play-video-boss-day-out-ranjan-das-of-sap-india-229111-807ecfcf1ad966036c289b3ba6c376f2530d7484.html
Here he himself admits that he would love to get more sleep (and that he was not proud of his ability to manage without sleep, contrary to what others extolled).

The Evidence
Last week, I was interacting with a well-known cardiologist on a talk about 'Heart Disease caused by Lack of Sleep'. While I cannot share the video nor the slides because of confidentiality reasons, I have distilled the key points below in the hope it will save some of our lives. Some Excerpts:
* Short sleep duration (<5 or 5-6 hours) increased risk for high BP by 350% to 500% compared to those who slept longer than 6 hours per night. Paper published in 2009. As you know, high BP kills.
* Young people (25-49 years of age) are twice as likely to get high BP if they sleep less. Paper published in 2006.
* Individuals who slept less than 5 hours a night had a 3-fold increased risk of heart attacks. Paper published in 1999.
* Complete and partial lack of sleep increased the blood concentrations of High sensitivity C-Reactive Protein (hs-cRP), the strongest predictor of heart attacks. Even after getting adequate
sleep later, the levels stayed high!!
* Just one night of sleep loss increases very toxic substances in body such as Interleukin-6 (IL-6), Tumour Necrosis Factor-Alpha (TNF-alpha) and C-reactive protein (cRP). They increase risks of many medical conditions, including cancer, arthritis and heart disease. Paper published in 2004.
* Sleeping for <=5 hours per night leads to 39% increase in heart disease. Sleeping for <=6 hours per night leads to 18% increase in heart disease. Paper published in 2006.
Ideal Sleep
For lack of space, I cannot explain here the ideal sleep architecture. But in brief, sleep is composed of two stages: REM (Rapid Eye Movement) and non-REM. The former helps in mental consolidation while the latter helps in physical repair and rebuilding. During the night, you alternate between REM and non-REM stages 4-5 times. The earlier part of sleep is mostly non-REM. During that period, your pituitary gland releases growth hormones that repair your body. The latter part of sleep is more and more REM type. For you to be mentally alert during the day, the latter part of sleep is more important. No wonder when you wake up with an alarm clock after 5-6 hours of sleep, you are mentally irritable throughout the day (lack of REM sleep). And if you have slept for less than 5 hours, your body is in a complete physical mess (lack of non-REM sleep), you are tired throughout the day, moving like a zombie and your immunity is way down (I've been there, done that L)

Finally, as long-distance runners, you need an hour of extra sleep to repair the running related damage. If you want to know if you are getting adequate sleep, take Epworth Sleepiness Test below.

Interpretation: Score of 0-9 is considered normal while 10 and above abnormal. Many a times, I have clocked 21 out the maximum possible 24, the only saving grace being the last situation, since I don't like to drive (maybe, I should ask my driver to answer that line J)

In conclusion:
Barring stress control, Ranjan Das did everything right: eating proper food, exercising (marathoning!), maintaining proper weight. But he missed getting proper and adequate sleep, minimum 7 hours. In my opinion, that killed him. If you are not getting enough sleep (7 hours), you are playing with fire, even if you have low stress. I always took pride in my ability to work 50 hours at a stretch whenever the situation warranted. But I was so spooked after seeing the
scientific evidence last week that since Saturday night, I ensure I do not even set the alarm clock under 7 hours. Now, that is a nice excuse to get some more sleep.

Unfortunately, Ranjan Das is not alone when it comes to missing sleep. Many of us are doing exactly the same, perhaps out of ignorance. Please forward this mail to as many of your colleagues as possible, especially those who might be short-changing their sleep. If we can save even one young life because of this email, I would be the happiest person on earth.

ps: Incidentally, just as human beings need 7 hours of sleep, you should know that cats need 15 hours of sleep and horses need 3 hours of it. So are you planning to be a cool cat or a dumb horse?

Mesmerizing Malaysia

Malaysia dropped corruption ranking from 46 to 56 in the world, according to CPI (Corruption Perception Index). In fact, studies done on selected businessman/analysts/local experts. Still, every other country in Asia (China, Indon, etc) reduced their corruption index, except for us comparing 2008 to 2009. Unsure if the study is correct or not.

Yet, personal experience tell otherwise. Just in this week, I have encountered 2 nasty experience. 1st - due to the overly congested road *poorly design bottleneck road*, I had no choice but to overtake from the left lane (takmo ngaku salah). Unfortunate enough, a policeman stood right infront & stopped me straight away. He was more interested in me than the heavily congested traffic. Hey, i thought they were paid to relieve the traffic. I have came across polices at some other parts, encouraging drivers to use left lane so that traffic is relieved. Any how back to the story, he wanted to slap me a compound.

Macam mana, nak bayar compound ke bayar kat sini? kat sini murah sket (muka tak segan)
erk.. encik, first time lar.. mmg tak pernah buat gitu (lagi tak segan)

Then everything else happened & I was finally released after we came to end of discussion. Then the other case, having lunch with a client from government body. We are going to be his supplier. Well, even before deal was made, there were few requests being made already. All for their personal interest, allowance, vacations. Seeing both my boss & I are chinese, dengan selamba he requested for entertainment, alcoholic beverage etc. Well, I told my boss not to mention that my status as we need to secure the deal as well.

All this would not have happen if everyone play their part. Though, it would be hard to wipe out corruption if the higher level shows inadequate moral values as well. Check this out =)

Ramblings again =)

Duno what to categorize, but these happened. I guess everything happened ada hikmah nya.

I offered free Gopeng rides to my friends; as they wanted to attempt the GPS race but no had no resources. In return they helped me out after all. After a meal at mamak stall, i couldnt start my car engine. My friends helped me check the engine etc, tapi tak dapat detect wats wrong. Turned out i forgot to refuel akibat too much talk & tak sedar the meter rating dropped zero while i drove KL-Gopeng. They bought some petrol & helped me start the engine.

Also, i thought i lost my pump right before race; turned out that my pump was in the car boot & had no puncture at all, despite riding on stones etc; yay luckily! but i forgot all bout my helmet after bathing at the river. It turned out to be good as i think I need to lose that helmet. I kept wearing the crashed helmet mended with some black tapes to hold bits N pieces of the polystrene. My helmet was chipped off after accident.

N ya, a mis-adventure during the race, turned out to be good after all. I quickly resume my sense of navigation after losing batu dam team. & I was adamant to collect more points during race, though it was almost time's up. Till a seladang blocked my way, N i came back to my senses & head back to base camp after calculating the pros & cons =)

MTB Orienteering - GPS

Monday blues, another dozen cups of thick chinese tea.. just to keep me awake. Luckily my client's meeting is scheduled to be tomorrow. Today is just like any other day; sitting by the office doing some work. Rewind the clock 1 round, yesterday I was out there struggling with my darling MTB. Sweet offroad MTB. Yang pelik, my upper body felt fatigue but not my legs.. Sapa suruh takmo tukar fork, my fork is already like roadie nyer da...

Saturday started with much persuasion to pancing my two other half bros to join me do the MTB orieentering at Gopeng. They were like the seesaw, kejap nak, kejap taknak. Finally, managed to hook them. It was more like rowers' reunion. Reaching there late, we opted for a cheap hotel in Kampar, instead of the well organized dorm-style packaged at RM35 per person. Mmg kedekut betul geng ni.. There were Majai, Wan, Tonga & me =)

Organized by Nomad, I knew it would be a nice race. This race demands some orienteering skill + mtb skill + of course your some of your brain & muscle work. Map to be given, checkpoints(CP) marked on the map & out you go to strategize your route. 15 CPs with different points, your mission is to collect most point in 5 hrs time. Meaning, if you are leisure-rider, you can do MTB at 3hrs, then balik. If too greedy, you might collect all points & exceed the 5hrs. Exceeding 5hrs cut-off would meant DQ.

We mapped out the most possible route. The higher the points, the higher the altitude of the CP. Haha, i planned to follow Tonga if i could & save energy on the thinking part =) However, i knew it was not quite possible. It turned out to be true, that I only managed to follow to the point that we Uturned after getting lost. Tongga, a navy guy N Wan sped up after the Uturn, & i was stuck behind the other riders. Power tak ckup.

Then I laid out my own plan & achieve as much as possible. Handpump was accidently dropped somewhere, & I kept on praying & conversing to my bike, that you r extremely pretty today & will do ur best (hehe, saiko sat) To get more points, I had to go up to those CPs. (kiasu betol) Beginning I was already pushing my bike, however, the route was so long that I gave up pushing the bike & rode instead. Da malas nak turun bike. Same for downhills as well. I m glad that I was not afraid of heights & downhills seemed manageable to me. Lagi2 time ada cameraman, lg tak push bike =)
At some point, i was drop dead tired & only could push my bike uphill. While doing that, i kept on laughing after overheard a group of uncles(big size) cursing each other for being greedy. They wanted huge points, but they were cursing all the way. Klako =)

When i ran out of time, i was still greedy to go for another CP. However, i was lucky that my path was blocked by a Seladang, then i knew it was time to head to basecamp. Overall ride was 4hr 40min. Pure satisfaction, 1 fall; 1 bruise only, & my bike were still in good condition. Collected 520points, highest point was by a Mat Salleh @ 720points.
I want to say big Thank You to my manager kat Pakistan. xoxo =)

Boss, can i get my rest today? Smlm kerja penat aaa..

Rowers' Reunion

This weekend, we had great fun at the Gopeng Orienteering MTB race by Nomad. It was actually more like a reunion for us, rowers. Dengan tak malu, we registered under Corporate Athlete's group, just to get further RM 10 discount for each of us. Hehe.. However, it was unfortunate to hear that he was unable to race early in the morning, before race start. It was a torturous, fun, strategic, tiring, but satisfying race.

Cutie Pie

hehe, makanan kitty lagi

2 ekor today instead of 1 the other day, getting friendlier already

Mari3x =) Once i go away, the food went away as well

I think someone there is going to call bandaraya to take care of these dogs.. R they going to put them to sleep? I hope not. Its just not the right thing. They are living things as well. God Bless them =)

Also, my mum's Wong Chois are getting lesser N lesser. At times, mum will cook & feed them nearby. The fact that the dogs are not taken care of makes her sad; being dumped just like that. Apparently there are Vietnamese staying nearby. No offence, but I do think of them being the culprit. It came out in the paper as well. How they hit & steamboat those doggies.

Have spoken to a Vietnamese in skybus once. He thought I was Indon, hence started to converse in some broken BM. He talked bout his country, culture & economics there. then, i asked on dog meat as delicacy in Vietnam.. Turned out that he owned a stall selling dog meat;organ etc. Gross ya, but they do enjoy especially during winter. Vietnam has wintery season. Terasa gerun jap.

As well as the dog incident at Pulau Ketam. The villagers all dumped the dogs at an island, left to die of hunger. All these episodes are horrifying. Just be kind to help if animals need some help.

Skali, from far i recognized a guy running with his sleeveless tshirt on. Selamba i passed him & hit him hard on the arm, thinking that he was my friend. My friend sebelah kept quiet next to me. When he asked who he was, only then i realise that he was not my friend. N i didnt see him jog there after being hit. Sian nyer, i didnt mean it. Take note - to be more alert

Gunung Bujang Melaka

Awek2 gunung

Monday blues.. Just had a race yesterday, N today is back to my cubicle. With highly caffeinated chinese tea, its d only drink to sustain me from falling asleep. Still did not feel the normal DOM(Delay Offset Muscle) but i have felt my DOM (Delay offset Mind) already. Mind already wander to coming weekend =)

My first race after being ber-honeymoon for 5 months. Though i thought i would be thorn between Powerman & Gunung race, it turned out that the gunung race lebih menggoda. Unable to resist the temptation, I sms-ed Ros to register me in.

Morning started with cool weather. All were like "Nurul Ainnnn!!" Da lama tak jumpe kawan2, N these are my racing friends. Cuma jumpa time race jer. I brought my waterbag initially, but all the expert runners said that it was not necessary. Only 16km. OOONNnnnly.. Ya right, what was 16km, turned out to be a 4hr run; sort of like marathon. N i trained maximum 10k in a training, luckily did an offroad run a week before.

Start of the run, it was flat all the way. then gradually up, then up & down. got sesat in between, apparently there was double marking. Infront of me (women's open) were all 4 kenyans & police ladies, laju bangat. I was then overtook by rita & stef, (both uni cat) hehe, they started later than open category. Managed to cut some aunties (same category), only to be overtook after being sesat. Stef & few other gurls got sesat skalik. After sesat, i got 2 rank lower. Time tu, da tak larat nak potong balik da. My training was definitely insufficient. It was already 2hr30min when i reached up. My longest run was only 10k. Downhill depend on mind set jer. leg were not co-operating, as i felt some pain going downhill. Got to slow down. Uphill was quite a good one, for me lar=)

On the way up met some friends, saw corporateathletes & ajak him to run. He was going strong too, managed to put a smile though it was really tiring. Going down, met some aunties, & I was fooled by one of them. She said not to go fast, janji selamat. After overtaking her, she trailed me closely. I tried to move faster to open a gap, but she was trailing me from behind. Kejap nampak, kejap tak. My knee felt wobbly, i had not trained for such a distance. Once onroad, she overtook me & dissapeared infront. Auntie ni, penipu betul. If i were fitter, it doesnt matter if she tipu or not =)

Last leg was on road, bout 4-5km gak. I thought I was already safe, skalik Miao was behind me. Again, running fast as I could, I managed to finish just slightly infront of her. She was doing a great job, as her downhill was really fast. Marshall told me that I was 9th, & she was 10th. Happy that both of us qualify for prize money. It turned out that I was 10th & she was 11th. Giving false hope to someone is not nice at all. It happened the other time to Julie as well. Its like giving a kid an icecream N taking it away.

Lastly, lepak w some police & get police stories; same goes to army friends, some awek cun geng & some college boys. So much to exchange. Stef dpt 2nd, sian die sesat skalik. but sesat in adventure races are kind of acceptable. =) felt nice that i had finished it finally. =) N managed to get a free hotel stay for my parents =)

Forgot to mention, the trail was 4km onroad, another 4km flat offroad. Then gradual up, then it was up & down, left N right. it doesnt go straight up. quite challenging, i meant the mental part. Physical strong without mindset pun susah gak. Final was steep. Then its all Uturn N the otherway round. going down was meant for the testing my mind, as it seemed extremely long compared to going up.

Some Medal, 10th

My mum has not been quite supportive of me joining sports. Conventional chinese she was, she sort of forbiddened me joining sports in secondary school. The thing was, I was active during my primary school until selected to represent zone for high jump. All came to end when mum said UPSR was more important. Till then, I was a bookworm through out high school. Thing changed once I entered uni, I was flying with wings. With mum being far, I was too happy to get involved with all hikings thingy, eventually joined sports back.
So was her unhappy when she knew about my friends being mostly malays. Like said, conventional chinese prefer chinese. N warned me furiously about getting a Malay bf. I angguk jer. Tapi, last2 son in law pun Malay gak..

Surprisingly, last weekend, mum suddenly agreed to follow me to one of the race; gunung Bujang Melaka. I am still taken aback when they agreed to join me, go jalan2 while i race. Mum has been dissaproving when races is concerned. But this time, she agreed to follow without any comment. It felt good when my parents started to support me =) So we went to Kampar for sight seeing etc. They even went to Gua Tempurung while i raced on Sunday. N chose the more adventure path, katanye yg normal path tak thrill for them =) N we pitstop after race kat Bidor, Tanjung Malim, Rawang on the way back, kata jalan2 cari makan =)

I have came across an email on carrot, egg & coffee powder. That you boil all 3 items in 3 different pot :

1) carrot which was hard in the beginning, became soft after being boiled

2) egg being soft in the beginning, became hard after being boiled

3) coffee being boiled, turns the water into aromatic black

It all depends on us i guess, on which ever situation that we would like to be. Do we want to turn soft or hard after being hit by a situation? Or do we want to change the situation?

hehe, ade kaitan ke last paragraph? Nevertheless, felt nice when my parents so-called joined me for a race.

Rower

Posted this before. This is what happened when i reminiscent. I tend to feel emotional when such thing come across. Specially for rowers, we do feel like below, not all but most =) nanti cari yg triathlete/IM/marathoner version..

YOU KNOW YOU ARE A ROWER WHEN.....

1 everything you do is "in 2..."
2 you need to have a small pushy person around telling you what to do all the time
3 you can get up, get dressed and get out of the dorm before your eyes are fully open
4 the phrase "cox box" doesn't make you giggle
5 you believe the world wouldn't exist without spandex
6 you only recognize your friends from behind
7 when you need to go anywhere, you have a sudden urge to throw your car over your shoulder
8 before you go anywhere, you are at Main 20 minutes early
9 you stick water bottles in your shorts for no reason at all
10 you believe all authority figures carry a megaphone
11 you sit in class leaning to your rigger
12 half your body is bigger than the other
13 you blame bad moods on "the set"
14 your friends need a rowing translator to decipher your language
15 you can wear the same thing every morning for a week and not think twice
16 you think sleeping late is waking up at 8:30.
17 everything's a race: you walk quickly to class, just so you can pass people

18 when someone mentions being awake, you turn parallel and set up for it.
19 when you sit down in class, you look for the tie-in shoes.
20 you constantly check the tightness of nuts in handrails, chairs, door handles, etc.
21 you think gloves are for sissies, but a nice pair of poogies is really stylin'
22 you bring up the beauty of the dawn, and people give you blank stares
23 overhearing people talk about how little sleep they got causes you to smirk, and maybe get medieval on their ass
24 your vision of going away for the weekend is other people's vision of Hell
25 You admire the man who wears boxers under his spandex much more than a woman wearing a g-string under hers
(of course =D)
26 You watch videos together, and it's ok to say "She's looking really long... (of course =D)

you're giving directions to a friend and you wonder why she's lookiText Colorng at you funny, until you realize you just said "turn to port" instead of "take a left."
...you dress and undress one-handed so you don't have to take your hand off the oar.
...every time you sit in a chair you are mildly surprised to discover that it doesn't slide back and forth.
