Sadie and I were house/dog/cat/bird-sitting for my aunt this past week. She has a Golden Retriever, who isn't really socialized with many dogs. Sadie and her kind of just co-exist. There isn't much playing or anything. There is, however, jealousy. From Sadie, of course. I mentioned it in a previous entry. She's an only child, and she always will be! She wouldn't have it any other way. I tried to give their dog attention as much as I could (when Sadie wasn't looking), but it was a bit difficult, considering Sadie follows me around everywhere. We had a good time though. It was relaxing (on the whole) and we had some "alone" time. It was good to be away for a few days and have a house to myself. (Minus a few animals.)
One night Sadie took out her squeaky ball and went wild. I took a video of it, because she is too cute when she plays with this ball. Harlie, the Golden we were staying with, decided to destroy one of her toys while Sadie was going crazy. At the end of the video, you can see Sadie's head snap back and glare at me for saying Harlie's name. Such a little brat. But a cute one, so it's ok :)
We hope you all had a great Thanksgiving and holiday weekend! We did, but I could certainly use a few more days off of work though!!!

Only Child Syndrome
I would love to have lots of little corgis running around. But I'm pretty sure Sadie would never let me bring home another dog. (Or any animal for that matter.) Since I adopted Sadie, it's been just the two of us...I haven't even dated anyone since I rescued her. Not sure if that is a coincidence or not, but that's a discussion for another blog! Haha. Needless to say, we have bonded, a lot. You could say we're both a little obsessed with each other. In a good way, I think.
Sadie is very protective of me, which I think is understandable. I am her Mama, and she doesn't want anything to happen to me, just like I don't want anything to happen to her...ever. Sadie loves when people come to visit, but she doesn't let them get too close to me. She didn't even like when my mom hugged me! I tend to worry about what she might do when I actually date someone again.
Sadie also doesn't like when I pet and/or talk to other animals. We are living with two cats now, and I sometimes pet them or say hello to them. And when this happens, I get the death stare from Sadie. I seriously think she is trying to burn me with her eyes. For the rest of the week, we are staying at my other aunt's house, watching her pets while they're out of town. They have a dog (golden retriever), a cat, and a bird. The poor dog is so depressed her humans left her, so I have to give her some attention. But the second I touch her, in swoops Sadie. Actually, "swoops in" makes it sound like she glides in nicely, while in fact she comes barreling into me, pushing the other dog (who is about 5 times bigger than her) out of the way.
So I'm pretty sure Sadie will be an only child...just like me! Maybe it was meant to be that way then. I never wanted siblings, either! And I'm perfectly happy with it just being me and Sadie.

Ear Kisses
Sadie isn't a big kisser. She gives me kisses often, but won't just give kisses to anyone. She reserves her kisses for a few select humans that she loves. But, if she REALLY loves you, you are deemed the honor of the prestigious ear kiss. Yes, you heard that right. Sadie LOVES ears. And loves kissing them even more. She's done this since I first got her, and it has only become more frequent. Does your dog do this, too? I'm guessing it's the smell she likes! But every once in awhile, she will come up to me, sniff my ear, and then lay a big wet one on it. I have to say, it is a very unusual sensation! First the sniffing and breathing in my ear, and then the kiss. Oh dogs, so weird, but so delightful. I've noticed most people don't enjoy Sadie doing this as much as I do. Maybe it's just something only a mother can love! :)

Lotion Lover
Every morning after I shower, I put lotion on. And every morning, after I put lotion on, Sadie attempts to lick it all off of me. I think this is a normal thing for dogs to do, right? Or is Sadie just insanely fascinated with lotion? She gets pretty crazy about it. I try to keep her from licking it right off of me when I put it on, because that can't really be good for them, can it??? She manages to get a few licks in usually, and then licks wherever I was sitting or standing as well. I don't know how else to stop her from this. She also waits for me when I'm in the shower and licks the water off of my legs when I get out. It's kind of cute, really, and water is better for her to ingest than lotion!! Anyway, just wondering if other doggies do this?? Or is it just another weird Sadie trait?

Barky McBarkerson
Every day when I come home, after the excited jumping and butt wiggling, Sadie starts barking at me. Usually it's because I am doing other things besides paying attention to her, even if it's just for a few seconds. So last night, I decided to take a video of her doing this. She gets so worked up, she even starts sneezing. It's pretty cute, actually, and usually causes me to laugh, which just annoys her more haha. The attention barking is the main reason Sadie barks. If I'm not giving her enough attention, she lets me know! My room was a little dark, so I had to use the light on my phone; hence her crazy eyes. But enjoy! :) (Also, you can see Sadie's insane amount of toys. Yes, she is very spoiled haha.)

Sad Puppy Dog Face
This is the look Sadie gives me every morning as I'm getting ready to leave. She hangs her head and looks at me from the corner of her eyes. This look kills me! And she knows it. Usually she won't look me directly in the eyes when I'm leaving. She even hangs her head in shame/sadness sometimes and looks down at the floor. She really knows how to milk it for all it's worth haha.
It looks like I took away her birthday or something!!! I so wish I could stay home with her.

Sleepy Sadie
I tend to take a lot of pictures of Sadie sleeping. Probably because she looks so freaking cute when she sleeps! I always want to cuddle with her when she is sleeping, but she usually gets mad when I wake her up haha. So I'll stick to taking photos. Also, Sadie loves to sleep on pillows. And she uses them like a human does, so it makes it extra cute. Does your dog do the same thing? I think it's adorable. The best is when I come into my room and she's all curled up on the pillow waiting for me. Sadie has her own bed in our room, but she generally sleeps on my bed with me. I wouldn't have it any other way. Because sometimes I will wake up, and she will be curled around my shoulder, or resting her head on my leg. It's hard for me to fall asleep anymore without her close to me! Plus, she's my own personal heater in the winter!!! :)
Here are some of my favorite Sleepy Sadie pictures. (You'll notice she tends to wake up when I take her picture haha.)

Rain, Rain, Go Away!
So it has been rainy and gross (and cold!) here the past few days. The rain is troublesome for several reasons. First of all, Sadie is low to the ground, so even if it isn't currently raining, but the grass is still wet, this means Sadie's entire stomach, chest, and paws are soaking wet after a walk. (She gets soaked every day in the winter when there is snow outside!) We have a towel waiting in the garage for these occasions. Sadie gets a good rubdown before we go back in the house.
The main problem is, Sadie generally refuses to go outside if it is raining, and if she does go out, she refuses to walk on the grass! She is a stinker. If it's really pouring out, she will look outside, look back at me, and run inside again. She's like, nah, I'll hold it! It gets a bit frustrating though if she actually does go outside, but won't walk on the grass (which is the only place she will go to the bathroom). So now not only is she getting soaked, but I am as well! Needless to say, this is what happened this morning. I tried taking her out twice before I left for work, to no avail. Hopefully she will be ok until my aunt gets home to take her out. I am sure she will be. It just gives me something ELSE to worry about all day now haha.
Two Friday pics for everyone...One of Sadie in her Gators raincoat (my alma mater), and one cute corgi butt! Happy Friday! :)

Why I Rescued Sadie
I've had pets throughout my whole life. Mainly cats, but we had a few dogs, too. We always adopted our pets from shelters. It may have been because it was cheaper to do so. But now it is my preference. I don't vehemently oppose breeders or anything. I understand why there are purebred dogs, and why many people want to buy them. And I don't have a problem with that. What I do have a problem with is the fact that there are soooo many homeless pets out there. It breaks my heart. If I could, I would adopt several animals. (Although Sadie really wouldn't want to share my attention!)
When I was younger, it seemed like stray animals found me. They would always come to me, let me take care of them. This happened everywhere, even when we were on vacation. And this is how we got many of our cats, actually. My mom found a cat abandoned at the post office one day. She took her home. Unfortunately this cat was sick, but we cared for her while we could. The cat I had for most of my life, Stormy, came to us in a tornado. Literally. She flew through this tornado and landed on our neighbor's screen door. They had two dogs at the time, and couldn't keep her, so they gave her to us. She lived a long, long life. She was almost 16 when she died. I had her from Kindergarten until College. The dog I remember most was a Christmas gift from my aunt and uncle one year. They adopted her from the pound. A husky/german shepherd mix with piercing blue eyes. Unfortunately, she did not live a long life. She had seizures, and became very ill once we moved out of our house. I'm pretty sure she was beaten as a puppy, before she was adopted by our family. This is another thing that makes me so very sad. I sometimes think I want to work for the ASPCA, being an animal cop. But I think it would kill me. It makes me sick to my stomach when I think about how people abuse animals. They are so helpless, and they don't understand. It's so cruel.
Now, I don't know if Sadie was abused. I don't know what happened to her at all in her previous life. I have a feeling she was abandoned though. Perhaps her family just couldn't take her with them when they moved. I'm not sure, but I know she has abandonment issues. Sometimes I think she may have been abused, just because of how she reacts to certain things, like yelling, and loud noises. It rips my heart out to think she was hurt in the past.
When I decided to adopt a dog, I was originally looking for a Pug. I really love Pugs, and was hoping to find one I could adopt. However, I expanded my search to all small dogs, and Sadie popped up. And I fell in love. It was meant to be.
Something I've noticed about rescue dogs...they are so very grateful. It's like they know they were rescued. They know life is better now. Sadie was scared when I first got her, but she settled in quickly. Something interesting though...she didn't bark, or growl, or make any kind of noise for over nine months. She was even scared of squeaky toys. I always think it's because she was trying to be the best dog, so I wouldn't get rid of her. She was scared to do anything wrong. But then she realized she was stuck with me, and started to be herself. Her loud, bratty (and very lovable) self!
Sadie still gets nervous if there is yelling. And beeping noises really frighten her. (For example, the fire alarm beep that warns when the battery needs to be changed.) It seems she has some kind of PTSD reaction to this sound. I wish I knew her history, so I know why she does certain things...but then again, it's probably better I don't know the details. I have a feeling it would kill me to know.

Sadie at the Beach
We went to the dog beach yesterday, and Sadie had a blast! She was running away from the waves at first, but then she ran right in. I can't believe how much she loves the water now! It's so cute. She was exhausted when we came home. If you watch the video, you can see why haha. She was running around like that all day!

Guilt Trip
Every day when I leave for work, Sadie gives me the biggest guilt trip. In our apartment in Boston, she used to hide under the coffee table. Now she goes to the other side of the bed and hides in the corner of the room. Or under the desk. She hangs her head and puts her ears back. It is the most pathetic thing ever, and it gets me every time! I wish I could stay home with her! Or bring her to work. That would be amazing. I hate leaving her. It really is the worst thing ever. Do all dogs do this? I'd rather stay home with Sadie than go most places, mainly to avoid this guilt trip haha. But I also just like being with her. I miss her so much when I leave, especially if it's for a few days. That's definitely the worst! I wish I could take her everywhere. I have to take a picture of the pathetic look she gives me one of these days and post it.
My aunt is home sick this week, so Sadie has been able to stay out with her. (Otherwise she has to stay in my room while I'm gone.) So it's not even like I am leaving her all alone! She just knows how to make me feel bad haha. Apparently after I left this morning, she went into our room and went to sleep on the bed. On my pillow. So sweet. I miss her already!!!

Happy Birthday, Sadie!
Today is Sadie's (unofficial) birthday! Since she was adopted, they weren't sure of her actual birthday, but listed November 1, 2005 as her birthdate. So we celebrate on this day each year! Happy 4th birthday to my little Sadie! I may be insane, but I always buy her presents and a treat for her birthday. She is like my child, so I think it's perfectly acceptable haha. This year, she got a cupcake and a new toy! (She certainly doesn't need any more toys, but I couldn't resist.) Here are some pics from her special day, as well as some others from Halloween that were just too cute not to post. Enjoy :)
