My Son : The Chef Extordanaire

This past weekend The Woods (our kids and grand kids from Raleigh came) to spend the weekend with us, and the Denton Romans ( another son and family that lives here inRichmond). We had a glorious meal at Denton's home after church He is a fabulous chef and makes fun, gourmet meals all the time. We have had many a unique and delicious meal at his house. He usually follows the Food network cooks or allrecipes.com. He does beautiful presentations all the way down to the neat napkin folds. He tries all kinds of things we probably never would and it is always a treat to go to his house for dinner. We had a wonderful day, other than losing Marissa for a few minutes while she was in search of a pacifier. That is a story for another day. But if you can wait go to littleromans.com.

Denton just planned and planted a huge new garden so we are excited for all the fresh vegetables we will all enjoy this summer. If you are ever passing through Richmond, call ahead and maybe we can get Denton to cook for you. He is awesome. He is going to enter the Ukrop's Cooking contest..watch out Richmond.

Springtime in Virginia

There is nothing more beautiful than springtime in Virginia. OK well maybe fall in Virginia. I love both of these times of year. It is just absolutely gorgeous this spring.....dogwoods and azaleas blooming everywhere. And the weather is just beautiful. Not too hot or humid.....but I know it is coming. So I have to enjoy being outside now. I just love driving around all over and just soaking up the beauty of it all.

I think every season my testimony is strengthened as I contemplate the majesty and order of it all. Heavenly Father is quite the landscape architect. I remember reading in the scriptures that nature was designed to testify of Jesus and remind us of the Atonement. When you think of the symbolism of winter becoming spring, it makes repentance seem so real and so possible.
What a great reminder everyday.

The moist and humid weather here is the price we pay for these unbelievably fabulous surroundings. I hope in Heaven we can have eastern terrain ( lush and green) with western weather ( dry and cool). I just know that is the part that will be better ( one can  always hope). I am so grateful to live in this beauty and freedom and for all my many blessings. I can't wake up and look outside without saying a prayer of thanks. I loooooooooooooooooove the earth and our Heavenly Father that created it for us.

This is a picture of my friend Beth and I. She has been visiting me for a week....which explains why I haven't been blogging very much this past week. We had a great time...but stayed up too late every-night. We have been friends since 1978.We met in Moline, Illinois. She is originally from Boston but has lived in Orem, Utah for many years now. She really is an east coast girl at heart and loves to visit Virginia. We have had many good times over the years, especially taking some fabulous road trips. About 2 years ago we were talking about genealogy and mentioned some names. Beth got so excited.....she recognized the names. It turns out we have the same 5th great grandmother...which is pretty closely related. We couldn't believe after all these years, we just figured it out. We knew there was a reason we were drawn to each other. Having good friends is a great blessing. I feel very blessed to have many wonderful friends ,new and old, that bless my life. The older I get, I appreciate my friends and what they mean to me even more. Relationships is what life is really all about. To love and be loved is the greatest happiness...... so wise and true. Tell a friend you appreciate them today.

The Family Athletes

Here are pictures of some of our family atheletes. I know there are a few more out there. I just don't have ant pictures of them. JORDAN just ran the SLC marathon last weekend. What an accomplishment. The picture reminds me of Greg...he ran a marathon in Richmond many years ago. So Congratulations Jordan. You are the MAN and we are proud of you.

Next is  Leo Caroline in her soccer suit. She played her first game and scored 3 golies. And that was just in the 30 minutes I was there watching. She is on a team with one of her best friends, Gracie Payne. I know her mother is proud since she was such a jock herself. It was really fun watching the game. Brought back memories of Denton at 5 catching butteflies on the soccer field or sitting down when he got bored or tired. And of Jordan practicing his "Michael Jackson Moon Walking" when he was in the golie post....waiting for a score.  And Greg and I yelling " pay attention". Oh the memories of the good old days. It is fun making new memories with the grandchildren.

Coco: my oldest granddaughter

This past weekend we spent in Raleigh, North Carolina, visiting the Woods. We had a great time hanging out with our grandkids. It is nice to have them, at this young age, want to be with us. I know this probably won't last forever as they get older....but I hope we are establishing a relationship with all of them that will last forever. They are all so darling and fun. Each one has their own special talents and unique personalities. It is so much fun to watch them grow. Being the grandparent is so much better than being the parent. They say it is your reward for surviving teenagers.

Chloe Jane, was so sad when we had to go home. She wanted to come with us..but had to stay home for school. She often suggests we move in with her, or next door :) Don't worry Chelsea, not until I am in diapers.Although, that could be sooner than we think.
She cried when we left and then had to come out one last time to say good-bye. Broke my heart to leave her crying.

I told her I was going to post her on my computer with the song that reminds of her when I hear it..."Kokomo" by the Beach Boys. So here's to you, Coco ( her nick name). I love you to the moon and back.

I love to see the temple ; I am going there today.

Today we are driving to Raleigh to go to the temple and then visit Chelsea, Dana, Lindsay and the grandkids. It will be a very special time as we do work for my father's line. And we will have Chelsea and Lindsay, our 2 daughters with us there. I feel very lucky and blessed to have all my children worthy to go to the temple...and a desire to serve there. I love this part of the dedicatory prayer given my President Hinckley for this temple. It really applies to all temples and members alike.

May all who come as patrons to this temple know that they are dealing with the things of eternity, and that the relationships here entered into are everlasting. Bless all who are here sealed in the bonds of eternal marriage that they may live together with love and respect for one another. Bless the fathers and mothers that they may rear their children as Thy children, in a spirit of kindness and encouragement, that the encircling hand of love may bind together the relationships of the family.

May it be looked upon as a place of holiness with respect and reverence. We pray that the elements may be kind to it, that it shall stand against the storms of nature. Almighty God, we bow before Thee with love and with love for Thine Only Begotten Son. Forgive our sins. Give us strength to live above our weaknesses and to walk above our faults, we humbly pray as Thy thankful children..... in the name of the Redeemer of the world, even the Lord Jesus Christ, amen.

Something good to eat in 1 minute

I went to this RS enrichment meeting the other night and had the absolute best appetizer. I couldn't believe how easy it was when I called the girl who made it. Soooooooooooooo easy...right up my alley. I know it is a heart attack waiting to happen..... that is why it is sooooooo good.........no lectures please. So here's the recipe:

Parmesan Onion Bites:

1 cup mayonnaise
3/4 cup parmesan cheese ( fresh... but you could try grated in the can if you are desperate( about the cheese that is)
1/3 cup green onions

Mix together and out on crackers or bread. Broil for a few minutes. Fabulous!

And to add more fun to your day here are 2 funny things:

1. Chelsea told me a fuuny story about a "large" lady that must try to eat her lunch at Costco very often via all the sample stations. Well many people do that, right? But she is special because she brings disguises with her. After she goes around once......she adds a hat, sungalsses, or something else as she goes around again. The sample ladies know her well and have a hay day cracking up at her antics. I guess she thinks she is fooling them.I laughed my head off...how creative. That just might be me in my advanced age......I will either betrying to strech my social security dollars or have althimezers..or both. I wish I had a picture of her. TOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO FUNNY!

2. So we are also talking about people who are always one upping others: Chelsea sent me this video from SNL and I laughed my head off again. Doesn't take much for me. Go to this link:

Have a very fun and funny day!

Geneology

So just to add a little humor in your day:A little girl asked  her mother, 'How did the human race appear?'

The mother  answered, 'God made Adam and Eve and they had children and
so  was all mankind made.'

Two days later the girl asked  her father the same question.

The father answered, 'Many  years ago there were monkeys from which the
human  race  evolved.'

The confused girl returned to her mother  and said, 'Mom, how is it
possible that you told me the human race was  created by God, and Dad said
they developed from  monkeys? '

The mother answered, 'Well, dear, it is very  simple. I told you about
my side of the family and your father told you about his.'

Rocky's 1st Birthday

My 9th grandchild, Rocky , turns 1 this week. He was born last year while Denton and Marissa were living with us. It was fun to have him come home here and see how cute the kids were welcoming their new little brother. We celebrated his birthday last Sunday at his home, with a fabulous meal cooked by his dad (Denton). Dessert was a yummy beyond yummy to die for chocolate ricotta cake. As you can see in the picture, Rocky was fully invested in enjoying every bite. He is the cutest, sweetest little baby. He is so mellow and smiles all the time. Everyone fights to hold him at church. Clayton's peeps were here for the celebration and a good time was enjoyed by all. Leo helped him open his presents. His family is going to the "Great Wolf" Lodge in Williamsburg this weekend to celebrate some more. We are so happy he was born and love him very much.

You know how I feel about Bananas

Well growing up, my mom always told me how good bananas were for me....all the potasuim and all. So I have always eaten them for sound nutrition...usually at least one a day. If you want to read about all the health benefits, go here.

And I have actually become quasi-famous for my banana bread over the years. It is the most requested recipe from my collection. I only give it out, if you really want it. Most people don't want the recipe, they just want me to make it for them. I pretty much make it every week for someone. My nail girl loves it....but only fresh out of the oven...never from the freezer. She doesn't hold back much. I have been asking her about her" buddist faith while getting my nails done....she teaches me alot.

Back to the bananas..you know how I get side-tracked. So I gave all my babies bananas.....now my kids are banana snobs.....they will only eat them when they are the prefect texture and color. Which is for about 1 day. But Lindsay at least loves to cook with them. She sent me this recipe yesterday and it sounds awesome. So if you have some bananas hanging ( no pun intended) around....and you want to get healthy.... ok.... sort of healthy.......make these fun little bars.

Banana Bars by Lindsay and Regan's mom ( and soon to be Suzie)

Ingredients:

1 1/2 cups sugar
1/2 cup margarine softened
1 cup sour cream
2 large eggs
1 1/2 cups ripe bananas mashed
1 teaspoon vanilla (*see note)
2 cups flour
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 cup nuts (optional)

Directions:

Cream together sugar and margarine. Add sour cream then blend in eggs & vanilla (*if imitation vanilla is used, use 2 teaspoons). Mix dry ingredients together. Add dry ingrecients gradually, alternating with bananas until completely mixed. Add nuts if desired. Bake in greased & floured cookie sheet, 12x17 or 9x13 cake pan. Preheat oven to 375 degrees and bake for 20 to 25 minutes.
Let cool then frost with ready made cream cheese frosting or this recipe for "Cream Cheese Frosting"
For the cream cheese frosting: 1 8oz package cream cheese, 5 tbs butter, 1 tsp vanilla, 2 C. powdered sugar.

Happy Baking!

PS. And if you are reading my blog, please send me a new recipe you love, even if you don't want to comment. We could become recipe bloggers.....another thing to add to our resumes.

Oh to be young again!

Well we had a fun weekend. Luckily I was only in my rock n' roll phase for a few hours before 'General Conference" began.
Greg and I watched both sessions Saturday with a delicious Mexican lunch in between. I went to a wedding shower in the evening while he went to Priesthood. He loved having Denton and Clayton to sit with. Clayton brought 9 of his friends down from DC to stay overnight and spend the day with us "eating" and watching conference. We stayed up late playing games.....then got up to our traditional "sourdough" pancake breakfast made by Greg. Denton, Riss and the kids came over too. We had a great time having them all. They are all such nice kids and is always fun for us to have them come. We hope they will come again. We had a delicious gourmet dinner at Denton's today between sessions for Baby Rocky's 1 yr. birthday.....will have to post those pictures later. Everyone said it was one of the best meals they had this year. YSA's really appreciate home cooked food.......and homemade banana bread.

Conference was great. It was neat to witness the solemn assembly and see the mantle fall on President Monson. Greg thought priesthood was exceptional last night. I love how seamless the transition is in the church at all levels....really seems the way the savior would want it. I had sweet thoughts and remembrances of President Hinckley but was able to fully sustain President Monson and appreciate the love and service he gives to all. I loved Sister Tanner's talk and admire her greatly. She will be missed. I thought there were many good talks and I am always amazed at how in touch our leaders are with the things we need to hear. It is nice to listen to something you can believe in and accept so easily. It brings me great comfort to have such valiant leaders guiding our church and guiding my life.

From Grammy Suz to Suzie Q Rolling Rocker

Today we took our grandkids Leo, Fischer and Rocky to the play place at the Mall, out for ice cream and then to a fancy toy store. Leo wanted a $28 plastic fishing poll.....but settled for a trip to the dollar store to buy play dough and a new car for Fischer.Rocky loved the ice cream.....the cold made him make the funniest faces..wish we'd had a camera.

On the way home . Greg said " I have a special date planned for us @ 5pm" He wouldn't tell me where. He had checked the calendar to be sure I didn't have anything planned in that time frame. So off we went......to guess where? The IMAX to see the brand new Rolling Stones' Shine a Light" show. Now for those of you who don't know us well, we have loooooooooooved the Rolling Stones for many years. Greg even saw them on his mission with permission from his mission president in Baltimore. Then many years later when Jordan was turning 13.....they were coming for the "Steel Wheels" tour to Birmingham, Alabama where we lived. We had 2 really expensive tickets given to us ( people were paying $750 for a ticket). I really wanted to go...but he wanted to go more...or should I say I wanted to let him go for his birthday. So he and his dad went on a school night and had the time of their lives. He got home at 2am and went to school a super-star the next day. Fast forward.....

We moved to Richmond. The Steels Wheels tour was at the IMax and it was one of the first things we did when we got settled in Richmond. Greg said he saw more at the IMAX than he did at the live concert. It was a blast for me. I totally rocked out the whole time....and was glad I saw it after all. So now all these years later......about 15......Martin Scorsese did a new production with 17 cameras. It was awesome. They didn't play as many of the old songs I love, but it was very entertaining. To watch Keith Richards on the guitar and Charile Watts on the drums is amazing. And the energy of MIck, is something to behold at his age. A news commentator said "there is probably a baby boomer out there that can sing better than MICK, but no body can move as much or as long" So true. They closed with "Satisfaction" and I was satisfied. What a fun afternoon.

Now, I have never been a big fan of their lifestyles or the like, but they are amazing musicians. They even did a country western song. It was a fun surprise and another rock n' roll memory I share with Greg Romans. It is amazing how I can change rolls in one day..... some grandma's are still so hip :)

Benefits of Massage

I got an awesome massage today. Last time I went ,I fell hard on the cement on my way out to the car and undid all the stress relief I has just gotten. I had a huge goose egg on my face, a black and blue eye, and very sore muscles. I thought about those grandma's that fall down...then realized I had become one of them. Drats! I told Greg I had the power....to be very nice to me....or I might call social services :) It took a few weeks to heal up.But I got to go back today and I made it back to the car without falling. I wore different shoes and walked very slowly.

I have been getting massages regularly for several years now. I go to a massage school ( to keep the cost down) that I have told several friends about. They also love it. I am a big believer in massage. It really helps me work out the stress in my neck and shoulders, as well as many other parts. If you haven't ever thought of doing it, here is some good info:

The Benefits Of Massage

What exactly are the benefits of receiving massage or bodywork treatments? Useful for all of the conditions listed below and more, massage can:

Alleviate low-back pain and improve range of motion.
Assist with shorter, easier labor for expectant mothers and shorten maternity hospital stays.
Ease medication dependence.
Enhance immunity by stimulating lymph flow—the body’s natural defense system.
Exercise and stretch weak, tight, or atrophied muscles.
Help athletes of any level prepare for, and recover from, strenuous workouts.
Improve the condition of the body’s largest organ—the skin.
Increase joint flexibility.
Lessen depression and anxiety.
Promote tissue regeneration, reducing scar tissue and stretch marks.
Pump oxygen and nutrients into tissues and vital organs, improving circulation.
Reduce postsurgery adhesions and swelling.
Reduce spasms and cramping.
Relax and soften injured, tired, and overused muscles.
Release endorphins—amino acids that work as the body’s natural painkiller.
Relieve migraine pain.
A Powerful Ally

There’s no denying the power of bodywork. Regardless of the adjectives we assign to it (pampering, rejuvenating, therapeutic) or the reasons we seek it out (a luxurious treat, stress relief, pain management), massage therapy can be a powerful ally in your healthcare regimen.

Experts estimate that upwards of ninety percent of disease is stress related. And perhaps nothing ages us faster, internally and externally, than high stress. While eliminating anxiety and pressure altogether in this fast-paced world may be idealistic, massage can, without a doubt, help manage stress. This translates into:

Decreased anxiety.
Enhanced sleep quality.
Greater energy.
Improved concentration.
Increased circulation.
Reduced fatigue.
Furthermore, clients often report a sense of perspective and clarity after receiving a massage. The emotional balance bodywork provides can often be just as vital and valuable as the more tangible physical benefits.

Profound Effects

In response to massage, specific physiological and chemical changes cascade throughout the body, with profound effects.

Research shows that with massage:

Arthritis sufferers note fewer aches and less stiffness and pain.
Asthmatic children show better pulmonary function and increased peak air flow.
Burn injury patients report reduced pain, itching, and anxiety.
High blood pressure patients demonstrate lower diastolic blood pressure, anxiety, and stress hormones.
Premenstrual syndrome sufferers have decreased water retention and cramping.
Preterm infants have improved weight gain.
Research continues to show the enormous benefits of touch—which range from treating chronic diseases, neurological disorders, and injuries, to alleviating the tensions of modern lifestyles. Consequently, the medical community is actively embracing bodywork, and massage is becoming an integral part of hospice care and neonatal intensive care units. Many hospitals are also incorporating on-site massage practitioners and even spas to treat postsurgery or pain patients as part of the recovery process.

Increase the Benefits with Frequent Visits

Getting a massage can do you a world of good. And getting massage frequently can do even more. This is the beauty of bodywork. Taking part in this form of regularly scheduled self-care can play a huge part in how healthy you’ll be and how youthful you’ll remain with each passing year. Budgeting time and money for bodywork at consistent intervals is truly an investment in your health. And remember: just because massage feels like a pampering treat doesn’t mean it is any less therapeutic. Consider massage appointments a necessary piece of your health and wellness plan, and work with your practitioner to establish a treatment schedule that best meets your needs.

Happy Massaging. I hope your will try it..it will change your life for the good.

The News for today

First of all.....today Clayton got some great news..... he was chosen as a finalist for the PRESIDENTIAL MANAGEMENT FELLOW (PMF) appointment. It is like a mini-LSAT with a personality test. He must have scored really high because only 4% of those that apply and are tested are chosen. Here is a picture of him on one of his excursions out of the country where he looks very happy. I am sure that is what he looks like today. Congratulations Ruff....we are proud of you.

Secondly, we have a name for our new grandaughter : Tess Annabelle Romans . Jordan picked the girls up from the hospital today. I hope they have a good night and adjust quickky to being a family of 6. .....and mom amd dad get sone sleep.
Melissa looks so beautiful in all her pictures, she must have gotton some good sleep at the hospital. Although, she always takes such good pictures.

Why Suzie Soda?

So everyone wants to know the story behind 'suzie soda" It's not really exciting. My maiden name is 'Sodergren". And when I was a kid (all through high school and college) my friends called me SODA. Ever since I was small, friends would sing "Suzie Soda pop with a cracker on top"...alas 'SODA' became my nick name... and followed me to school one day. And some of my long-time friends still call me SODA. So there you have it...something you may have not known about me.

Something else you may not know about me is I looooooooooooooooooooooove "Candid Camera" I watched it religiously when I was younger. Here is the funniest thing to make you laugh today. Just his play... but don't forget to pause my fun music so you can hear it.

More about the New Baby

So here are a few more pics ..Jordan's family with the new baby, Melissa and baby. etc. We still don't know an official name for this little girl yet.But today Meliss'a mom sent me the funniest thing Maddox said:

" Reagan, Maddox and I were having lunch at my counter. Maddox said, "My name is Maddox Alexander". I told them that Alexander was my daddy's name. Reagan said, "Oh, your daddy's name was Alexander Grider". I explained to her that my daddy's name was Alexander Vlandy, and that my name was Rita Vlandy until I married Papa and then I became Rita Grider. Then Reagan said," My mommy was Melissa Grider until she married my daddy and then she became Melissa Romans".

Then Maddox said, "and when my daddy got married he became a PRINCE".
