Kelong Fishing Trip 21st May 2009
Last Thursday, i went on a fishing trip to Tanjung Leman, a place near Mersing with my mom, dad and my dad's friends. Total 7 people and 2cars. We set off from home at 7am and we drove to woodlands to meet up before crossing the checkpoint and speeding our way towards Mersing. It was quite a long drive, about 2 hours plus with lots of overtaking in the 2 lane road. I had my share of overtaking too. Its not that difficult anyway, just have to drive safely. First we went to Mersing to buy live prawns bait for fishing, then we drove back to Tanjung Leman Jetty to board the bumboat to the kelong.
Upon reaching the kelong, we settled down and had our lunch before setting out on the rented boat for some deep sea fishing. For about 1 hour plus, we had no catch at all. Then it rained. It dampened our mood, thinking that it will be a bad day. Luckily, the rain stopped soon after and we soon start to have catches. I was quite unlucky at first, as 2 big fishes escaped. One of them even bent my hook. Only till nearing the end of the day, i got my first big fish. It was a good fight and my arms were aching after i got it up. Its a big fish, but its not really a good fish as it tastes terrible. Lol. Anyway that sums up our boating trip. My dad and friends had their reasonable catches too.
Went back to kelong was dinnertime and sotong time. No sotongs actually. Only cuttlefish. Caught quite a few before i went to take a bath and went to bed. The next day was small fish time. Bacause the area around the kelong is often overfished, only small fish remain. So, we only keep the bigger ones and throw back the really small ones. some of them are only around the size of our finger. Keep also useless la. Lol. My dad's friends even fished for swordfishes. Just for fun. It tastes terrible too. After lunch we were on our way back to Singapore. Took the bumboat and then sped back in our car. Then thats the end of the fishing trip. Catches this time are okay only. Not that fantastic also.
