Happy Birthday Dr. King!!

Four Short Stories

1. Birds (a)

SDS: What's that on your windshield?
ME: Bird poop.
[Later]
ME: We need to feed the birds when we get home.
SDS: Yeah. Then they'll stop pooping on your windshield!

THE END.

2. Birds (b)

[Listening to "Somewhere Over the Rainbow"]
SDS: He can't fly! [The singer who wants to "fly" over the rainbow!]
ME: No?
SDS: No. He doesn't have any feathers!
ME: Hmm. I guess you are right.
[Silence...as she think...]
SDS: Mommy?
ME: Yes?
SDS: I want to be a bird-person, so I can fly.

THE END

3. Beans

SDS [from across the house, yelling]: Mommy! I need to tell you something!
[SDS's pounding little feet can be heard as she runs through the house to my bedroom to find me.]
ME [Thinking that SDS is in emergency mode.]: Hey. What's up?
SDS: If you plant a bean, a beanstalk will grow!

THE END

4. The song

SDS [singing, to the tune "Waltzing Matilda"]: We sing, Matilda. We sing, Matilda. You'll come, we sing, Matilda, with me.
ME: Hey, it's "Waltzing," not "We sing." A waltz is a kind of dance.
SDS [exasperated]: No mommy. It's "We sing." The song is about singing to Matilda!

Danger!

Just after I explained that it is too cold to walk on the edge because if she fell in she would freeze...

MLK Day

SDS: Mommy, did you know that today is Martin Luther King, Junior's birthday?
Me: Yes. We're going to go a parade for him.
SDS: Will he be there?
Me: No, Sweetie. Dr. King is dead.
SDS: But, who will blow out the candles on his cake?
