Antidote for Winter

We here in Squeakerville have gotten our first real taste of winter. Fortunately this year it was a few inches rather than a few feet for our December snowfall. None the less, little girls who go out in the snow expect one thing when the get back.

HOT CHOCOLATE!

Have a good week. Enjoy the lunar eclipse tonight!

That's Why They Call Them Terrors...

Squeaker has had an eventful week by any measure. We had a fun evening this week watching the Daddy person's Alma Mater play basketball. We left before they lost, so she and I both had fun. We then caught the local production of the Nutcracker. Squeaker very much enjoyed the first three quarters, but by then was ready to leave. Unlike basketball, I wouldn't leave the ballet early.

In between was her four year old check-up. She's still on the 92nd percentile in height (which would be why I will let her leave basketball games early - I want her to enjoy them. The night before her check up she was worried about getting a shot (which she did). And that, we surmise is why she had a visit from the night terrors.

The do after all call them night 'terrors' and not night 'discomforts' for a reason. She was softly crying in her sleep and so the grown ups went in to comfort her. Our attempts mainly ended up getting her to cry less softly, but when we finally get her seemingly conscious, Squeaker asked for a cup of water.

Once she drank her shot of water, she asked for milk, and we brought her a glass. She drank down a decent sized glass of milk in single long gulp.

She then looked at me and screamed at the top of her lungs for about twenty seconds. Five minutes after that she was asleep. While I may sound callous, the next time, the Daddy person is not going to get her milk.

Have a good week.

Lights, Camera, Winter!

Squeaker and the Daddy person took some time out from their busy schedules of colds and school to go see and outdoor Christmas light display. We had a great time, except that it was really, really cold! It took until this evening for my hands to thaw, so sorry for the late post...

Squeaker vs. the Tube

Squeaker and the Daddy person had a nice Thanksgiving. Well we had a nice Thanksgiving except for the fact that we were both sick. Being sick interfered with our travel plans and that wasn't fun either. Last night we feeling better (or at least had decided that we didn't have time to be sick anymore so we went to a playground that was new to her.

The audio is probably as important as the video. Squeaker is stubborn and we join her after she's crawled back down a tube that she didn't think she could climb.

We here at squeakerpants.com hope you enjoyed her barbarian yalp, well her 'barbarian gotcha' and the vehemence of her high fives as much as we did. Have a good week.

Fly Like A Butterfly III

Longtime readers of Squeakerpants.com will remember the "Yellow Rice incident of 2008" and Hopa's mystical powers of evasion. While, Hopa has not lost a step, unfortunately we know this because there was something for her to dodge. As you have guessed, Squeaker was sick this week. Poor Squeaker managed both a 24 hour stomach bug and a harsh cold during the same week. The good news is that she is feeling a bit better today though.

Just Hanging Out

Squeaker had a nice trip to the Children's Museum with her grandparents. Squeaker went through a phase where she wasn't excited about going to her new school five days a week. She's made some friends (apparently she's not the only four year old who wants to be a paleontologist) and we don't get questions about if she has to go to school.

Have a good week.

Mousse

Brite and Squeaker made vegan mousse this week, but as you can tell, Squeaker did not like it one bit. Saturday night, the Daddy person took her to hear a battle of the a-cappella groups at a local college. She is very perceptive, but is also very much four. She fidgeted, colored, and seemed to be paying no attention at all to the show. However when quizzed by Brite about the evening, she had lots of things to say about the performances.

Have a good week!

Happy Halloween!

Happy Halloween from your friends here at Squeakerpants.com. Squeaker went as 'Little Red Riding Hood". While the Daddy person contemplated buying a flannel nightgown and some ears, he decided to go as a "smelly, gatorade swilling, 10k obsessed runner".

Enjoy the sugar rush!

Lawn and Garden Squeaker

Squeaker and the Daddy person had a nice trip to visit Momzie this weekend. Whenever we get to the farm, our little gardener heads straight for the vegetable patch. She found some peppers, tomatoes and squash this weekend.

Quiet Weekend

Squeaker and her family enjoyed a quiet weekend at home this weekend. Saturday morning she got to watch the Daddy person huff and puff his way though a race. She might have enjoyed the blueberry bagels more than the show, but she seemed to have a good time anyway. The Daddy person has been planning to take her out to Sunday brunch since August and yesterday, we finally were in town together on a Sunday, so we got our chance.

Have a good week, and if you didn't check late last week, read the last post.

Worth the Wait!

When Squeaker is out of town without the Daddy person, we here at Squeakerpants.com are without our muse. However, she is back now, with stories.

Squeaker went to Ohio with Aunt Brite and Uncle Mack to reprise her role as a flower girl. The picture above was taken well after her normal bedtime, she had been waiting a couple of hours for dessert. The mousse with raspberry sauce was so good that she wanted to eat one the size of "a one year old T-rex" and if possible to have "400 million times more" than her first helping

During the wedding the flower girl did not seem to be paying attention to the mass, but on the way home today she was overheard telling her little cat Stripe that "At my church, when you are six and a half, you can eat the body of Jesus bread". Apparently, she was listening during the service...

At the reception, Squeaker asked Brite, "Will they have line dancing? At Aunt Sandra's wedding, I did line dancing. The man told me to go left, and forward, and back a lot." Brite responded that she wasn't sure, so Squeaker took matters into her own little, brazen hands and took her case to the DJ.

A few minutes later, the DJ came on and announced that "the flower girl had requested line dancing and everyone should come join her." The DJ picked the Electric Slide, and his directions left most rookies (including Brite) confused. Squeaker stopped in the middle of the dance floor and put her head down.

When Brite went to investigate/rescue her, Squeaker said "Brite, he stopped telling me which way to go and I do not remember. At Aunt Sandra's wedding, they told me what to do I did it. I just can't do it now." Thankfully before the flower girl melted, the DJ played Staying Alive, "from Daddy's playlist" and everything was right with the world again.

The Flower Girl

Squeaker is fighting off a cold and the Daddy person has been off running a triathlon this weekend, so I don't quite a current post for you. I have been saving this one for a rainy day.

One story I can't resist telling actually happened on the way to the last wedding. Squeaker wanted to listen to her playlist, so we put it on. If you will permit me, read the following out loud using your best VISA commercial voice:

iPod connect kit for the car - $160
Regimental Band - Pipes and Drum CD - $17
Aux cable for the rental car - $5
"Shenandoah", "Scotland the Brave", and "Bonnie Blue Flag" 'with the words' - $2.97
Allowing Squeaker to pick the music on countless road trips - No Charge

Being able to command "Join in Yankees!" when my daughter belts out "Bonnie Blue Flag" - Priceless!

In an unrelated note, the editors of squeakerpants.com regret that has taken two centuries to come close to achieving for all Americans that which was set out for us in the opening paragraph of the Declaration of Independence.

For her part, Squeaker is a big fan of Abraham Lincoln. She refers to him as her president, and bedtime for the last few weeks has involved reading the Caldecott Medal winning biography of him. On the other hand, Squeaker is on the verge of mounting a letter writing campaign to the Newbery Medal committee.

Squeaker has picked up on the shiny medals that award winning books wear on their covers, and she views it as deep injustice that all of her Laura Ingalls Wilder books didn't win medals.

After Church

The Daddy person was out of town this weekend for a wedding. Squeaker was mindful of the Daddy person's current athletic endeavors though.

Squeaker: Brite after church I want to ride my tricycle to the pool. All the way to the pool.

Brite: Honey, that's pretty far. Why would you want to do that?

S: I have to get ready for my triathlon.

B: Really?

S: I'm going to ride my tricycle so far and then run so far.

B: And then swim? (noticing that Squeaker forgot that the pool was her destination.

S: And then I will be ready.

Hopefully the Daddy person will be ready too...

Birthday Girl

Despite a shortage of rest this week (thanks to the first week of school), Squeaker had an excellent birthday this weekend. She had a good time making the rounds on her party circuit. We, and she, were glad to stay in state this weekend.

Tuesday, September 7, 2010

Elena, do you hear that sound? I think that's my alarm beeping.

Sorry for the out of schedule post, but we here at squeakerpants.com thought it was worth marking the first day of school.

Since Sleeperpants tends to wake up on her own schedule, we decided to get her a 'big girl' alarm clock. It beeped for almost five minutes, filling the house with its electronic warble, before she rolled over or even said a word. Once they had decided upon the cause, Squeaker turned it off, got dressed, and came downstairs for breakfast. Stay tuned for more news...

Off to the Wedding

Squeaker and I are off in far Indiana this weekend for her great aunt's wedding. We keep calling her a 'flower pot', but she reminds us that she says 'flower girl'.

The Daddy person requested one of her favorite Patsy Cline songs, 'Crazy'. Squeaker got very excited when it came on and dragged me out the dance floor. And then she left me to find her Aunt Gidget. This pattern kept up all most of the night. The Daddy person would try to dance with her and Squeaker would smile and head off to dance with someone else. I did get the last dance though...

Squeaker the Road Warrior

As I write this post (a little late, yes) Squeaker is headed home from Ohio. She was there for training for a gig as a flower girl. Unfortunately, from a travel point of view, she will be headed back across that fine state on Friday, en route to another gig.

One way or another, the Daddy person is looking forward to seeing her again.

Curious Squeaker

Curious Squeaker is is little girl and always very curious.

Squeaker had another chance to see her Aunt (no, not Brite) in musical theater. It was her second time seeing Annie, and while a little fidgety she did a fine job sing along with the chorus.

Last week, Curious Squeaker and Brite were on the way to visit one of Squeakers friends, who as it happens has blonde hair. Unprompted, Squeaker announced that "I would like to have blonde hair. I don't want mine to be brown any more. Do you think my friend wants to have brown hair, Aunt Brite?"

Editors Note: The Daddy person didn't think that this was ever the case, but apparently Squeaker's friend has asked about being a brunette, like Squeaker and Brite. And yes, Squeaker's friends all call Brite, 'Brite'.

Squeaker continued, "Yesterday when we went to get the TV test, I saw boxes with different color hair on them and little loops of hair underneath. Can I buy one of those boxes and change my hair to yellow?"

"No Squeaker"

"But we buy toothpaste there."

Enjoy the week. Sorry for missing last week, Squeaker and Brite were on a little road trip, and with his muse gone, the Daddy person was a little focused on the pending arrival of his hundreds of other children.

Chatty in Chattanoga

Squeaker is back from her whirlwind tour of Tennessee. We had a wonderful time wandering our way though the city. We decided to let her tell you about it.

Have a good week!

Tethering in Tennessee

Squeaker and the Daddy person are hanging out in Tennessee for the week. We're just starting to get our bearings, but since we're here for a couple of days, I'll be sure to upload reports this week.

Friendship

Squeaker is getting used to being away from her friends at our old house, but they have been keeping the US Postal Service going with letters and drawings headed back and forth up the road. Those friends who she's known her whole life have graced these pages often. Hopefully she will always know where to find them.

What I find interesting too, are a couple friends she has who live around 500 and 10000 miles away, who she has only spent time with a handful of times, but spends months wanting to play with again, despite oceans of obstacles.

Enjoy the week.

Baseball

Squeaker and the Daddy person went to another baseball game this weekend. At least part of my motivation was to makeup for having missed fireworks on the 4th (she got eaten by bugs on the 3rd), but mainly I was hoping by getting seats close to the action, I might interest her more in the game. I succeeded in getting us close, but mostly she seemed to be interested in kettle corn and the kids nearby. She did enjoy calculating the number of outs left each inning and the number of innings left in the game. However, even the promise of fireworks couldn't keep us past the 7th inning.

Given the disaster that had been parking at the game, the Daddy person didn't mind leaving ahead of everyone else. Besides, we don't want to sour her on our game. On the plus side, she asked a number of times if we could go to a basketball game again.

Remember to Smile

No, I didn't tell her to smile for the camera this time. I don't think she'd have heard me anyway.

Instead, I offer that as advice for our readers, many whom will probably find that hard to do this weekend.

Flower Girl

Just as we, the editors of squeakerpants.com, would prefer that Squeaker still refers to herself as a flowerpot (we feel the same way about her love of pwimming).

Summer is still treating us well. She's finished her first round of swimming lessons and the change is amazing. At the start of her lessons she was nervous about leaving the stairs without wearing her floaty or being held. By the end of her lessons, she was enjoying diving to the bottom to pull the Daddy person's goggles off his head. She does still get a little nervous jumping into the water. We will try and get some footage of her external-internal monologue before jumping into the water. Watching her overcome her nervousness is priceless.

Back to the pool everyone!

Ooops!

Let me see...
The first and second days of summer school are behind me.
House is getting unpacked.
It seems like I have forgotten something...

SQUEAKERS BLOG!

Squeaker's swimming lessons are going very well, although I don't have any 25 meter times for you yet. Swimming lessons are more accurately described as "getting comfortable in and under the water lessons at her age". She marveled that the Daddy person had swum straight through one of her lessons without quite being interested in the same thing herself. Squeaker does love going under water and riding on my back while swimming around the pool. I suppose it is hard to argue with that.

Have a good week!

Brite, This Dining Room is Very Familiar...

.. except for the walls.

Squeaker and her fan club have finished their relocation. We did in fact miss last week's post, but fear not our hiatus is over and we have resumed our regular Saturday morning schedule. As most of our regular readers realize, these Saturday morning posts conveniently come out most Mondays.

Squeaker is adjusting well to her new house. We eased the transition with a new, big-girl bed, and movable, removable stickers so she could personalize her room. It doesn't help that we have a pool and a playground in our neighborhood. The amenities haven't stopped her from occasionally wanting go back to our old house and spend time with her friends.

This weekend, she attended her first baseball game. It was hot (of course) and after she'd had her ballpark frank she was ready to go home. Unfortunately the first inning wasn't over yet the first time she made that request. Ultimately a snow cone and the promise of a post game fireworks display cooled her off and gave her something to look forward to after the game. Despite our root-root-rooting for the home team, they lost in extra innings. Squeaker seemed to think the fireworks were worth the wait, but she hasn't asked to go back to a game yet. I think it might be worth taking her to a minor league game so she can see better see the action.

We rounded out our first weekend at our new home, away from home, seeing old friends from near and far away. Long-time readers will remember that a couple of her stuffed animals were named after friends. She got to hang out with them again this weekend and had a blast. Since we returned home, she's been complaining about some of the choices made by the USMC Office of Personnel Management.

That's all the news that's fit to print. Squeaker starts swimming lessons tomorrow. Stay tuned for her 25 meter times.

Packing Time

Squeaker has been doing a good job of getting her things packed up for the big move. We think maybe she figures if we take all her stuff along, we'll be sure not to forget her too. She was getting into the mood here by seeing how many of her animals she could stack on top of each other. The result - nine at one time.

Back to the boxes!

Final Exercises

Having been primed by our road trip a few weeks ago, Squeaker had her own graduation last week.

We hope you enjoy some highlights of the show. Squeaker watched it over the weekend with her grandparents and she enjoyed going through all choreography again with the video. Enjoy!

Playlist Evolved

Squeaker's involvement with our playlist has grown since i mentioned it back in March. Although I have made a couple of additions (more school songs), most of the action has centered around the fifth song, Old Dominion. If you haven't heard it (or maybe even if you have) you can watch the it here at Eddie From Ohio's website. On a related note, I would like to publicly ask EFO to come play another early evening, outdoor concert somewhere in the Old Dominion this summer.

I started the evolution by pointing out to her that the "just southeast of Heaven" line is an allusion to the geographically challenge John Denver song, "Country Roads". While I am pretty sure Squeaker was listening to the words before that conversation, she started asking questions about the song after it, and will sing a nice rendition of the chorus for you too. Squeaker never likes to miss "Fight For Old DC" and makes me rewind if she misses it (she also frequently requests the VMI fight song, though that's cause she knows I'll sing it for her at least once a car trip).

Editor's Note: I was about to suggest that it's good for her sake that I am not a Cubs fan (for her sake), but by building up VMI sports, I suppose I am going one worse (the Cubs at least win during the regular season), never mind the 'Skins and the Nats.

Those questions lead eventually to Patsy Cline. The Daddy person is certain that Squeaker will be the only Patsy Cline fan in her preschool class. So, Old Dominion is followed (at her behest) in the playlist by: Walkin' After Midnight, I Fall to Pieces, Crazy, Back in Baby's Arms, and Sweet Dreams (of You). In case you're wondering about her choices, go back to the link and listen to the song again.

Have a good week your friends here in the Old Dominion.

College Tour

Squeaker and I went on a road trip this weekend. Given her attachment to hearing the Daddy person sing his old college songs, I thought it was about time that she got to hear the band play and watch the Keydets march. Since she asks about my students every night at bedtime (out of a genuine interest in them and in delaying my departure) I thought we would go to graduation together too. So we packed up an extra bow tie for me and a skirt for Squeaker and made a weekend of it.

Saturday was hot enough to melt little girls (let alone the big boys and girls in grey wool), so Squeaker did not enjoy waiting for the parade. Once they got started, she forgot about the heat, and throughly enjoyed it when the band marked time a few feet away from her. She was disappointed that the band didn't play the Spirit or the Doxology.

After the parade we walked to the second college on the tour, or more accurately through the second college, on our way to our real destination, an ice cream shop the Daddy person has frequented since the Gipper (Honorary '40) lived in the White House. Sustained by a cup of blue raspberry, I suggested that Squeaker should be able to walk all the way back to the car by herself. She shot back, "No, I need two cups of ice cream to be able to walk all the way back to the car."She did make it most of the way back to the car, but slept her way to the next college in the tour.

The Daddy person prepped well for graduation, we had a drawing pad, a blanket, and a shady spot far enough away from the action that a little girl's comments and questions wouldn't disturb people too much. It was a nice cool morning (at least in the shade) and she had fun observing the rituals and musical interludes of graduation. The awarding of the degrees was fun because we played the guess-what-her-name-starts-with-so-how-long-do-we-have-left-game. Squeaker did well with it and left with an understanding of where she would be in her procession, as well as with a strong desire to "get some awards".

The biggest surprise for the Daddy person was that when we finally got in the car and headed home on Sunday, Squeaker expressed a strong desire to go to another graduation. I think this was at least partly fueled by the fact that there was a ready supply of chocolate covered strawberries (the size of her fist) at the graduation...

Have a good week. If the rain ever stops we might get back into the woods for a camping trip.

On the Road

Squeaker and I are visiting her grandparents this weekend. We enjoyed her Granddad's stage debut, but unfortunately the pictures I was going to post are back in the mountains.

Check back midweek for her engineering feat of the week...

Hiking in the Park

Given the success of our walk in the woods, it wasn't going to be long before the Daddy person took Squeaker to the big time. In this case, we went to our local national park for a 3.75 mile hike (and picnic).

I learned a couple of things on this trip. The first lesson is that if you are taking Squeaker hiking and she asks for a fifth pancake with breakfast, you should give it to her. She was asking for food from the time her foot hit the ground and was still hungry after we finished lunch. The second is that her ancestors evolved to deal with the cooler climates of Europe's primordial forests. She hasn't yet embraced the sticky heat of summer in the south and wilted occasionally. Third, this hike was three times as long as our last one, and perhaps a little far for a wee one over rocky terrain.

As a corollary to those lessons, the Daddy person wilted somewhat while carrying his little wildflower up the mountain in the heat, without quite enough lunch. We had a good time, and I think she will go hiking with me again. However, she was wondering if we could go for a bike ride again.

Have a good week.

We're Not Obsessed!

Squeaker and I had a nice long weekend with her extended family, though unfortunately I had my camera hidden away and didn't get any pictures. I can say for sure that her Aunt Nancy was elevated to rock star status. Squeaker discovered (as part of her usual conversational routine) that Aunt Nancy has a pet Bunny.

The pictures are of our adventures yesterday. The first is from another bike ride, finally got on the trail I have been looking for, so this time we ran out of time before we ran out of pavement. It was also getting really muggy (which makes me feel better about some of the times I had decided not to take her out last year). After our ride we headed an hour west and hit the local children's museum for a couple of hours. Finished with that, we headed west again for another hour and had a picnic dinner at a local playground. Squeaker discovered that the blackberries blend well with the brie when you mash them up with the crackers (and yes, Brite the spots did come out of her new purple and white shirt).

Have a good week!

PS Those are bunny ears she's making in the pictures. And you thought I was the obsessed one with all the rides...

The Running Naturalist

Squeaker and I continued our outdoor adventures this weekend. Our bike ride was some what disappointing this weekend because the rail trail we picked had the decimal to the left of the 5, not the right. Despite this challenge, Squeaker was a champ when I tried to take her through the nearby cobble stones. Well, she was a champ for the first five feet, but she found it too difficult to drink from her water bottle and made me turn around.

Yesterday we went on our first hike together. We went to a nature area near our house (not being sure of how long we would be out, it didn't seem worth driving too far). I should probably note that Saturday we had spent a little time in a city park. We went the long way around a small lake to get to a playground. Squeaker had insisted on running much of the trip. When she runs with me she can't help but giggling, so we couldn't help but have a good time.

As we were driving to the nature area Squeaker kept insisting that we would run. For my part, I kept suggesting that she needed to be careful running on trails. The trip got off to a rocky start (pun intended). Shortly after we slipped beneath the canopy, she wanted to go back to the car. I suggested we push ahead, but again a few yards later, she wanted to stop again. This time we took a knee and discussed the issue.

Squeaker was worried that the woods might hold creatures that wanted to eat her. The one she seemed most concerned about was a fox (whenever we drive home at night, we look for the neighborhood fox). I listed the woodland creatures that we were likely to see, deer, squirrels, birds, and yes foxes and suggested that all were likely run as soon as the heard us. Moreover, I was fairly sure that foxes were nocturnal and so would be asleep anyway. That seemed to quell her fears so we headed on down the trail. We stopped and looked at new ferns beginning to unroll, wild flowers, and ant hills. Mostly we walked, but sometimes we ran, and we had fun seeing the sights. In the midst of one of our giggly jogs squeaker stopped in her tracks and found a piece of fruit full of ants.

While we were still looking at the fruit, we heard a rustling in the woods nearby. I caught a glimpse of a small form darting though the leaves and got Squeaker turned around to see it. It paused for a few seconds to consider us, then headed on its path, perpendicular to our own. It was a large, red fox, with a bushy tail following it through the woods. Fortunately, Squeaker was excited, not scared, though she did question my credentials as a naturalist, "Daddy, you said foxes were nocturnal." I don't think she bought my excuse that it was looking for a midnight snack.

Once we cleared the woods, we ran the quarter mile back to the car. She was tired and stopped whenever I got too far ahead of her, but persevered and ran the most of way. I let her get to the car first and on the way home, she suggested a schedule of who would win the race back to the car (first we would alternate, then she decided it made more sense to let each of us win ten times in a row).

I put her down for her nap after we got home. She hasn't slept at her nap lately, but I think this time she was out before I had cleared the stairs...

Outdoor Adventures

A while ago I bought Squeaker that trailer so we could go on bike rides together. Until this weekend we've used it once. She didn't appreciate our one ride on hot day down our bumpy dirt road. So the trailer has lain fallow in our garage through two falls and a spring (I don't count summer, because I don't want to bake her). This weekend we've had two great (if short) rides. She had a blast looking at the trees as we rode around our first capitol.

Seriously she was looking at the trees and was not bored. She was looking for good climbing trees (smooth bark, well spaced limbs). This tidewater forrest had an ample supply for her to examine. I was happy with to have the trees because their absence meant that I was fighting with 20 knot winds.

Yesterday, we got in two trips, a short bike ride and kayaking on a local lake. The ride was on our town's one off road, paved bike path, with a round trip of four miles. We started and finished from that playground, so this time she was mainly concerned with when we could turn around and go back to the playground.

Kayaking with Squeaker was fun too. We saw turtles and a few fish. She listened to me about where to sit and not to stand up. She really wanted to paddle (something like an African Swallow carrying a coconut across the English Channel). We compromised by paddling together for a while.

We finished our day with a little soft serve ice cream. I decided that we would share a cone. That went pretty well at first. She took a bite, and by virtue of my size and having provided the day's locomotion, I would take a larger bite. As we got down to the cone, Squeaker started taking two or three bites. As we moved down the cone, in her sugar haze she stopped handing the cone back to me. Picture if you will my sweet little girl holding the cone with both hands and pulling back with all her might. It was all I could do to pull the cone close enough to me so I could take a bite. It is kind of hard to fight over an ice cream cone without spilling it or breaking it, but we did it.

When we got home, she didn't ask to play before bed and is still sleeping too boot....

Princess Arctic Fox

I am tempted just to let these pictures paint a picture of the weekend, but then you wouldn't hear about the snake Squeaker held or that she's really tough unless it comes to scrapes and hydrogen peroxide. And no, I didn't tell her to put the pelts on her head. She did that purely by instinct.

HAPPY EASTER!
