Alan Moorhouse – The Big Beat Vol.2 (KPM)

Label : KPM

Value :

The big beat here is plenty darn funky – but in some really weird and wonderful ways too – thanks to the genius talents of the mighty Alan Moorehouse, the legendary British maestro featured on this rare sound library album for KPM! Moorehouse is even more compelling than some of his funky contemporaries on the sound library scene – because he's not only got a great way of cooking up a short, simple, soulful groove – but he also puts the instruments together in really unusual ways, often to create sounds that veer past their simple origins, to make the grooves sound even greater! This album's a sound library masterpiece all the way through – the kind of set that makes you realize why this under-exposed genre of music is regarded so highly by modern beatheads – thanks to Moorehouse's use of organ, keyboards, funky drums, and a fair bit of acoustic guitar – quite unusual for a KPM set, but all the more compelling.

Gert Wilden & Orchestra – Schulmädchen Report 1996 (Crippled Dick Hot Wax!)

Label : Crippled Dick Hot Wax!

Value :

The tag end of the 1960s and the beginning of the 1970s brought a river of permissiveness into film, with sexploitation getting a pretty good foothold in American drive-ins and cheap theaters -- not porn, but softcore weirdness involving lots of young people running around naked in whatever circumstances could be concocted. As good as America's breed of low-rent filmmakers got with this, though, they couldn't hold a candle to the Europeans -- particularly the Germans, who all but turned softcore into a science. It may well be that America retreated to cheap horror movies in self-defense (and a case could be made that the English also beat a retreat, assuming a hardcore literary stance). And so, Germany produced Schulmäedchen Report (Schoolgirl Report), its many sequels, and its ilk. There were a lot of them, many of which wound up exported, badly dubbed, and run to death. If they didn't have a soundtrack by Gert Wilden & His Orchestra, then they weren't worth bothering with -- well, at least according to the liner notes here. Going by the evidence at hand, the liner notes might well be right. Wilden's music is a wonderfully demented pastiche that takes its inspiration from all kinds of sources -- "Dirty Beat" swipes from Led Zeppelin, but chucks in bits of acid rock, crazed Farfisa organ, and drum work that sounds like tap-dancing piledrivers. Other cuts teeter on the edge of pure lounge, there's bits of smoky jazz, R&B, crazily mangled surf music, whatever else can be jammed in and will stick -- listening to this is like dealing with weather in Vermont: wait a couple of minutes and it'll change completely. One moment it's lolling saxophone, and the next it's James Last on amphetamines. It all fits, it's often hilarious, and it is absolutely worth keeping on hand. The album producers have also provided multiple liner notes (in English, German, and very small type) that explain the background of the films, provide biographical information about Gert Wilden, and have a little fun with the audience. Lobby cards and stills are scattered liberally throughout so that booklet begins to resemble a photo essay on nudism (the booklet front and the tray card feature nude stills as well; no disguises evident here.) The music, however, remains interesting long after the images have become boring.

The Square Set - Featuring 'Silence Is Golden' 1967 (Continental Records)

Label : Continental Records

Value :

The Square Set was a 1960s rock band from Cape Town South Africa, known for their songs Silence is Golden (SA number 1 Hit (1967)) "Carol Corina" (SA number 10 hit (1968)), and "That's What I Want" (international number 1 hit in Brazil, Argentina, and Portugal (1971-1972)).
The band formed in March 1966 and was called Neville Whitmill and the Humans. Founder members Nol, Neville, Derek and Keith rehearsed daily for 6 months composing new songs and covers before contracting their first professional gig at the Clifton Hotel.

Nol Klinkhamer hailed from the Conservetoire of Music in Holland having a degree in Jazz played piano, organ and the vibraphone. Neville Whitmill a Soul singer from Cape Town had influences from Buddy Holly, Ray Charles, Ottis Redding, Marvin Gaye. Derek Marks from Cape Town enjoyed rock bass playing with influences from bands like The Beatles, Small faces, Dave Clark 5 and Keith Moffat from Cape Town also enjoy playing Rock music. During the rehearsal stage they landed a gig at the "Stables nite Club" in Church Street Cape Town which gave them a venue to hone and perfect their craft. The venue was usually packed to capacity to hear the band. At this time the band decided to record their music and in August 1966 met Ian Martin (recording engineer) and Lindsay du Plessis (owner) of A.V.S studios Bree Street CT. It was at this time that a name change was much needed. During a studio break the four got together to thrash out names and it was Nol Klinhamer who suggested "The Square Set".

The band combined soul vocals and jazz organ (with the Hammond organ growing in popularity at the time) with rock bass and drums. The Hammond sound can be heard on most of The Square Set songs.

The previously unreleased 'Silence Is Golden' had a makeover with Graham Beggs at the helm and was released on Gallos Continental label in or about March 1967. It reached number 1 on the Springbok radio charts around July 1967.This led to the release of the bands first full album, 'Silence Is Golden'.By Wikipedia

'That's What I Want', a song first recorded by UK group The Marauders in 1963, was also recorded by by The Ronnie Singer Sound, a Cape Town band Marks had previously worked with. The latter version was given to The Square Set to record. The song was changed to accommodate the lineup and added to the 'Silence Is Golden' album. This song was later released in South America on the Decca label and rose to number 1 in Brazil, Argentina 1971 and number 1 in Portugal in 1972.

Guido And Maurizio De Angelis - La Polizia Incrimina, La Legge Assolve 1973 (Beat Records Company)

Label : Beat Records Company

Value :

One of the first great Italian cop movies of the 70s – and a superbly-scored film with a really wonderful soundtrack! The DeAngelis brothers are clearly drawing heavily from an American tradition initiated by Lalo Schfrin – using heavy guitar, funky undercurrents, and even some soulfully righteous touches to really set this one apart from other Italian films of the time. Yet the approach here is also a bit more different, touches with some of the darker modes and more redemptive themes of Italian westerns – a sense of suspension and drama that's incredibly powerful, and heard to best effect on the solo instrumental passages – which include guitar by Maurizio and flute by Guido.

Label : Canopo

Value :

A beautiful sound library gem from the legendary Alessandro Alessandroni – recorded for the commercial Flipper label, and issued publicly here for the first time ever! The music is sublime – that side of Alessandroni that came closest to the bossa and vocal styles of Ennio Morricone in the late 60s – with lots of breezy rhythms at the bottom, and a blend of instrumental passages, wordless chorus lines from I Cantori Moderni, and even some of that famous whistling from Alessandroni himself! We especially love the chorus bits – as they almost feel like The Swingle Singers trying to follow an Edda Dell'Orso sort of pathy – blended here with cool keyboards, including some totally wonderful electric harpsichord! Phoenix ‎– Totusi Sînt Ca Voi / Floarea Stincilor / Nebunul Cu Ochii Inchisi / Ar Vrea Un Eschimos 1969 (Electrecord)

Label : Electrecord

Value :

Phoenix was one of the most prominent Romanian Rock and Roll bands of the latest decades, and also the first one to take musical inspiration from ancient Romanian folk themes.

Formed in the 1960s, it began by doing covers of Beatles songs. However, they soon had to change their style since the Romanian communist regime disliked any form of western culture. The communist regime suggested that all rock oriented bands should look for inspiration within the Romanian culture. These restrictions made the band's leader Nicolae Covaci search within the Romanian folklore, which gave them a unique sound.

Turkish Delights - 26 Beat, Psych & Garage Ultrarities from Beyond the Sea of Marmara 2001 (Grey Past Records)

Label :  Grey Past Records

Value :

"26 Turkish Beat, Psych & Garage Delights: rarities from beyond the Sea of Mamara" (also called Turkish Delights) is a compilation of Turkish rock groups from the 1960s and 70s. The album highlights the early and classic 1966-77 rock periods in Turkey, including giants such as Mavi Işiklar, Erkin Koray, and Moğollar.  Informed by the music coming out of Britain and the United  States, the fourteen bands in this collection run the gamut from early beat sounds of garage bands to mid-seventies psychedelic explorations, simultaniously infusing the music with a distinctively Turkish sound.

In the mid-1960s, the British invasion's led by generals John, Paul, George, and Ringo and supported by units such as the Who, the Kinks, the Rolling Stones and the Yardbirds swept across the United States and Europe, forever altering the static-dusted sounds coming from the radio.  It wasn't long before young people all over the world were plugging in amps, setting up drums, cracking cases of beer and crunching out imitations of their favorite rock 45s.  Most of these groups were, perhaps fortunately, lost to time, never amounting to anything more than a handful of misspent afternoons and adolescent laughs.  Even so, there are countless examples of recordings available to the scholarly, curious, or just plain demented.  The United States and Europe boast an impressive number of specialty stores, magazines, and conventions devoted to the quest for finding that one obscure gem, the recording that time forgot.  Over the last decade the seemingly bottomless well of obscure U.S. and British bands began to dry up, forcing the now junkie-like record collectors to turn elsewhere for their fix.

If it were mapped on a globe, the widely accepted history of rock and roll would appear to bounce back and forth between Britain and the U.S.  Contrary to conventional wisdom, however, varieties of rock spilled over into any region that had transistor radios and sullen youth with too much time on their hands.  Starting with the release of the now infamous Cambodian Rocks album over a decade ago, European and American collectors have plumbed the relatively uncharted depths of garage and psychedelic rock from around the world.  The curious can listen, among countless others, to rave-ups by Japanese, Greek, Indian, Korean, Italian, French, Peruvian, or Brazilian bands.  Turkish Delights is just one installment in a long line of 1960s re-releases from around the globe.  One of the greatest impediments to the total global domination of rock and roll was language.  The young and curious in non-anglophone regions were often put off by their inability to decipher the frequently slurred and confusing lyrics of rock and roll.  Such was the case in Turkey, which, although it had a small rock contingent in the 1950s, did not truly jump on the bandwagon until a decade later.  Early on, the interest in Euro-American popular music was fuelled in Turkey primarily by instrumental bands such as the Ventures or the Shadows.  Then the Beatles broke and, as happened in many popular music scenes around the world, everything changed.By Gabriel Skoog

Even if they chose the 16 best tracks from the Lp version, the remaining cuts would still make it worth it.

Cem Karaca & Apaşlar ‎– Resimdeki Gözyaşları / Şans Çocuğu 1968 (Türkofon)

Label : Türkofon

Value :

He was the only child of Mehmet İbrahim Karaca of Azerbaijani origin, and İrma Felekyan (Toto Karaca) of Armenian origin,a popular opera, theatre and movie actress.

His first group was called Dynamites and was a classic rock cover band. Later he joined Jaguars, an Elvis Presley cover band. In 1967, he started to write his own music, joining the band Apaşlar (The Rowdies), his first Turkish-language group. In the same year he participated in Golden Microphone (Turkish: Altın Mikrofon) contest, a popular music contest in which he won the second place with his song Emrah. In 1969, Karaca and bass-player Serhan Karabay left Apaşlar and started an original Anatolian group called Kardaşlar (The Brothers).

In 1972, Karaca joined the group Moğollar (The Mongols) and wrote one of his best-known songs, "Namus Belası". However, Cahit Berkay, the leader of Moğollar, wanted an international name for his band, and he left for France to take the group to another level. Karaca, who wanted to continue his Anatolian beat sound, left Moğollar and started his own band Dervişan (Dervishes) in 1974. Karaca and Dervişan sang poetic and progressive songs.

In the 1970s, Turkey's image was damaged by political violence between supporters of the left and the right, separatist movements and the rise of Islamism. As the country fell into chaos, the government suspected Cem Karaca of involvement. At times he was accused of treason for being a separatist thinker and a Marxist-Leninist. The Turkish government tried to portray Karaca as a man, who was unknowingly writing songs to start a revolution. One politician was quoted as saying, "Karaca is simply calling citizens to a bloody war against the state." Dervişan was ultimately dissolved at the end of 1977. He later founded in 1978 Edirdahan, an acronym for "from Edirne to Ardahan"; the westernmost and the easternmost provinces of Turkey. He recorded one LP with Edirdahan.

In early 1979, he left for West Germany for business reasons. Turkey continued to spin out of control with military curfews and eventually a military coup on September 12, 1980. General Kenan Evren took over the government and temporarily closed all the nation's political parties. After the coup, many intellectual people, including writers, artists and journalists, were arrested. A warrant was issued for the arrest of Karaca by the government of Turkey.  The state invited Karaca back to the country several times, but Karaca, not knowing what would happen upon his return, decided not to come back.  While he was in Germany, his father died, but he could not return to attend the funeral.

After some time, the Turkish government decided to strip Cem Karaca of his Turkish citizenship, keeping the arrest warrant active.  Several years later, in 1987, the prime minister and leader of the Turkish Motherland Party, Turgut Özal, issued an amnesty for Karaca. Shortly afterwards, he returned to Turkey. His return also brought a new album by him, Merhaba Gençler ve Her zaman Genç Kalanlar ("Hello, The Young and The Young at Heart"), one of his most powerful works. His return home was greeted happily by his fans, but during his absence, Karaca had lost the youthful audience and acquired few new listeners. He died on February 8, 2004 and was interred at Karacaahmet Cemetery in Üsküdar district of Istanbul.By wiki

4 Belgium Beat Dynamite.

The Pebbles (Belgium 60's) however were very popular  in Belgium, France, Italy ,Portugal and Spain (recordings in Spanish and Italian) .They had an excellent 'live' reputation. They shared the bill with Jimi Hendrix , The Nice , Pretty Things and Small Faces.Their albums are not on CD yet (except an awful re-recording with synth pop sound and an 'early singles' CD )
Pebbles - You Better Believe It (Antwerp - Barclay BE 60853 - 1967)

Another band who did manage to release their music in 1968 was SWEET FEELING. This band from Liege had already made three pop-singles when they came up with the heavy BB King classic Rock Me Baby together with Treat Her Right (EMI Columbia DCB113). A fifth 7 should follow a year later, but unfortunately they did let them talk into recording two Beatles songs. In France, Rock, Me Baby only got upon a B-side (Germinal GE 45.015) with one of those Beatles tunes on A.
Sweet Feeling - Sherry Cherie (Brussels [Brabant] - EMI-Columbia DCB 140 - 1968)

Hailing from Liege in southern Belgium, the Tops released two 45's on classical label Arsis in 1972. This hypnotic psychedelic dance track is a sure winner on the dance floor and is ripe pickings for old Fat Boy Slim to sample , or to end up on some TV advert.

Out Cast - Kimi No Boku Mo Tomodachi Ni Naro 'Let's You And Me Become Friends' 1967 (teichiku)

Label : Teichiku

Value : From 40 to 70 euros

Japanese psychedelic garage trash alum released in 1967. This was he Out Cast sole recorded LP out of 1967. This is one of the holy grails of the GS pantheon and one of the finest artifacts of that scene. The Outcast harbored the budding talent of guitar slasher Mizutani Jun, latter better know under his name Kimio Mizutani of Foodbrain, People and “A Path Through Haze” fame. Great psychedelic garage punk that incorporates thrilling and vicious organ leads and great fuzzy psych guitar work. Classic and vintage early Japanese psychedelia.

With their double-breasted suits and neatly styled hair, this smartly dressed sextet was the first band to come from the Watanabe Production management company. They were formed in mid-1966 by legendary guitar mangler Jun 'Kimio' Mizutani and organist Yuyu Hoguchi, both of whom had formerly played with Ryuichi Tsuda & The Blue Ace. After moulding the boys into a suitably commercial image, Watanabe signed The Out Cast to Teichiku Records, who released their first single, a folk song 'Tomodachi Ni Naro (Let's Be Friends)' which was a flop. Hot on its heels came a second single, another folk song 'Aisurukoto Wa Darede No Dekiru (Anyone Can Love)'. This was also a flop, but the b-side, entitled 'Denwa De Iikara (Just Gimme A Call)', was a bubblegum classic flip out which guaranteed Mizutani and the band a place in garage rock legend. In the summer of 1967, Out Cast played a very psychedelic show with The Tigers at Tokyo's Nichigeki, and scored their first hit 'Enpitsu Ga Ippon (A Pencil)' that same summer. Two further minor hits guaranteed the release of their LP KIMI NO BOKU MO TOMODACHI NI NARO ('Let's You And Me Become Friends'), which was full of Mizutani's signature mayhem. However, Mizutani and singer Kenji Todoroki were growing tired of the Ground Sounds format and found the suffocating restrictions of Watanabe Productions impossible to deal with. The two quit the band to form the more artistically satisfying Adams, causing Watanabe Productions to sack everyone else except bass player Ryoji Ono, in an Electric Prunes-style rock pogrom. The new line up continued briefly with new vocalist Osamu Okamoto, guitarist Katsumi Tani, organist Yoshiharu Sugano and drummer Yukio Asakura; but The Out Cast's days were over.
