Life these days

I have to admit, my life is busy at the moment! Usually I enjoy being busy and having lots to do, but these days things are fairly hectic (FUN, but hectic). For starters, lets not forget I have a 4 week old and just having a newborn makes life busy. Secondly, we started homeschooling back up last week and while I really love doing it with the kids, preparing the night before it's as fun as laying on the couch with a baby on my chest!! To make things more busy Emmersyn decided to be potty trained. Granted she's doing AWESOME it still takes time and energy. We started on Monday morning and haven't looked back yet. She also hasn't had an accident and has been super easy to potty train. I don't even have to ask her if she needs to go, she just runs to the potty does her business and asks for a m and m after! Good job, E!

Look at those thighs...I think little toddlers in underware has to be one of the cutest thing ever:

An old friend, from high school, who I am newly friends with again lives in Grand Rapids, she also homeschools her son which has been great for playdates (for Riley especially!). We had him over and he did homeschooling with us instead of at home. They are doing a few activities working on consonant diagraphs here:

Also, as I have mentioned we've been house hunting. Well two weeks ago we found a house we really love and put an offer on it. The next day they accepted. Yesterday we had the inspection and if all goes well we should close before Christmas. YEAH! We are so excited but the thought of packing up again makes me want to just stay where we are. I am SO incredibly tired of pack and unpacking. It feels like that's all we've done the past 7 years. This will be move #7 in 7 years...in case you've lost count. Hopefully, though, this will be it for a long, long time.

So, all of that on top of the holiday's and my dad's surgery (#5 to replace the bone they removed because of an infection! He's doing great, by the way) I feel like I'm on auto pilot some days just trying to enjoy the kids and trying to keep my head above water!

My Dad, 2 days after surgery! Doesn't he look great!?  Anistyn and I enjoyed spending the day with him and Jamie.
Anistyn also got to meet GG and Grandad for the first time!

Ty and I decided to venture out to lunch with all the kids this past weekend. I thought it could be difficult, but actually the kids were great and we really enjoyed our meal! However, when we got there the host told us to wait just a minute so he could push two tables together...lol, I guess that's when you know you have a "big" family:

Random Thoughts

Just a random thought, bullet style post ahead:
  • I can hardly get my kids to sit and eat breakfast in the morning because they are so excited to play together, it makes me smile and I love, love, love that they look forward to waking up and playing!
  • The Lord has really answered my prayers with this 4th baby of ours. She is SO GOOD. She's sleeping through the night pretty consistently and I don't feel like a walking zombie most days! Yeah, Anistyn!!
  • Lincoln is sick, again! Double ear infection. Before that it was a sinus infection and before that was pneuonia. YUCK!
  • Today will mark the 7th time in 2 months that I've been to the doctor's office with one of the kids. Today is Anistyn's turn, it's her 2 week well visit!
  • We've been taking a break in homeschooling since Anistyn was born, but we're starting it back up on December 3rd. We're having our "winter break" in November instead of December.
  • We haven't been in Michigan the past few winters and I have to admit, I DREAD going through a Michigan winter again. Even though we got snow in WV and IL it was nothing like a Michigan winter!
  • We are in the process of looking for a house. It's fun and annoying at the same time. It's fun to see what's out there but 1. I wish we had an unlimited budget and 2. I wish there was more to choose from, but this time of year isn't the best to be looking. Thankfully we're not in a huge hurry, just ready to feel settled!
  • I'm so excited for Christmas, I love this time of year (just not the weather). Unfortunately Ty only has Christmas Day off since he exhausted his PTO when we had Anistyn.
  • I HATE this time after having a baby and trying to find clothes that fit/look good. At least when you're pregnant and nothing fits, you have a good reason. I don't want to go buy a bunch of new stuff because hopefully I will lose the weight eventually, but I also need some things to get my by until I do lose it!
  • The kids are still doing great with Anistyn and seem to be adjusting well to her. I thought Emmersyn would have a hard time, but so far, so good...time will tell I suppose!
  • If you ever have the opportunity to make a meal for someone who has just had a baby, DO IT! It has been such a blessing to me and I am SO grateful to all my friends and strangers who have made us a meal! It has given me time to get used to having another baby and makes me grocery shop less often while I'm recovering! Seriously, one of the nicest and most helpful things you can probably do for someone who has just given birth (esp. if they have other children!).

And then there were 4!

As I said before my mom had the kids, but before she took Lincoln to my sister's she brought them over to meet Anistyn in the hospital. It was a bit chaotic as it was past their bedtime and lets be honest, having 3 little kids in a hospital room isn't easy. With that said, they didn't stay very long. They were so excited to see the baby, especially Riley and Lincoln. Emmersyn was more excited to see Ty, I think. She clung to him, but she hasn't been without one of us for that long before, so I think she was glad to see us!

I was just as excited to see them with the baby as they were to see her. Riley could hardly wait to get her hands on Anistyn and Lincoln just kept kissing her. They had a great visit and went back to Kzoo for the night. Lincoln left crying because he was concerned about me. I don't think he liked seeing me in a hospital bed. My mom said he cried for me most of the way home, it broke my heart, but I assured him I'd see him in a few days. I love how sweet and sensitive he is!!

Riley was just so thrilled, she could hardly contain her excitement!!
Kisses from Emmersyn!

He doesn't look happy at all...does he?!

Anistyn's Birth Story

I've been meaning to sit down and write Anistyn's birth story for a week now, but lets just say I'm a little busy! Feel free to skip this SUPER LONG post, if you don't want every. single. detail! :)

Friday, November 10th, I had a doctor's appointment at 10am. My mom and Jeff were planning on coming over to watch the kids and take them to the kids' museum since it had been hard for me to get out of the house and we were all going a little stir crazy being cooped up inside! About 20 minutes before my mom got here she called and said that my sister, Lily, had forgotten a paper that needed to be turned in for a class, on the kitchen table. She needed to have it by noon-ish. Knowing that there's no way she'd be home by then, my mom offered to take all three kids back to Kalamazoo with her so she could get Lily her paper in time and we'd meet up later that evening to get them back.

I got to my doctor's appointment, was checked (was 1 cm dilated), had a non-stress test, and was sent on my way. We had discussed if I hadn't had the baby by Monday she'd set up induction for Thursday evening. I was praying that wouldn't happen! During my NST I was having contractions about every 6-7 minutes, but it didn't mean much to me because I had been having regular contractions for days. I just knew they weren't painful enough or close enough together to go to the hospital yet. Because I was kid-free the WHOLE DAY (which hasn't happened in years...seriously) I met Ty at Gus's, a local food place which is next to his office, for lunch. Just the two of us!

NST

After lunch, I literally went straight home and crashed on the couch. I watched tv and did NOTHING...it was awesome! By mid afternoon I was starting to get annoyed with the contractions. They didn't necessarily hurt at first, they were just uncomfortable, and by the time Ty got home from work at 4 they definitely because stronger. I was planning on meeting up with my mom to get the kids after dinner, but I called her and asked if she could keep them overnight because I felt like I could be going into labor that night. If I didn't we'd pick them up in the morning.

About 8 pm, I knew things were progressing and the contractions, although not getting closer together, were painful. I laid on the couch and just waited. Finally at about 10:30 I hopped in the shower and told Ty to get our bags packed (oops! should probably have had that done...that's what happens with the 4th kid) and off to the hospital we went. I got there at about 11:30pm and was admitted right  away. When we got to the hospital I was 3-4 cm dilated.

Last preggo picture!

I learned my lesson FINALLY and this time I got an epidural right away. By 1am I had my epidural and was feeling great. I was positive for the Group Strep B so they got the antibiotics started right away. Ty and I were both tired, but I couldn't sleep. I was excited and anxious and people kept coming in my room so I didn't sleep. However, I let Ty sleep until about 6 am. Little did he know the doctor had come in my room around 5:30am and broken my water so thing were picking up. Tena, the nurse I had, was GREAT! When the doctor broke my water she said I made like 4 times the amount of fluid than the average (is that why I was so big?! I guess so!) I woke Ty up and told him I was starting to feel pressure and I thought if he wanted to take any pictures or wake up a bit he should get up. I called the nurse in at 6:30 and told her I felt pressure. She called the doctor in. We discussed, through contractions, how long I pushed with the other kids (E was the least amount of time at 45 minutes) and I hoped I didn't have to push that long. Also, all the docs and nurses were changing shifts at 7am so I wanted to have her before I had to get all new people. I had one contraction and pushed once when Ty looked at me he said "Yeah...it's definitely not going to take 45 minutes". I pushed twice more during that contraction and Anistyn was born at 6:53 am! It was crazy fast and such a rush. I was THRILLED to finally be holding my sweet girl in my arms. What an amazing thing giving birth is!

Right before I delivered, the docs and nurses were guessing how big she was going to be and not one of them guessed under 9 pounds. They knew my history with having big babies. As soon as Anistyn was delivered, Dr. Werkema said "this is definitely isn't a 9 lb. baby". I looked at Ty and said she looked like a 5 pound baby (compared to how chubby Emmersyn was!), he said more like 8ish. I nursed her and held her on my chest for a good hour until they took her to weigh her, bathe her and do all the necessary things they do. They gave her back to me and said she weighed 7 lbs. 15 oz. and was 19.5 inches. I couldn't believe what a peanut she was! I was so glad...they grow too quickly, especially when they start out at 10 lbs. We named her Anistyn Grace. Just two names we both liked, but don't necessarily have any significance.

After I delivered her I couldn't feel my legs, or anything below my waist actually. I was so glad...I didn't have any pain after delivery. It was weird because I literally couldn't move my lower half. The nurse would be lifting my legs, which I could see, but I couldn't feel her lifting them. It was a really creepy and weird feeling, but I didn't care because it also meant I couldn't feel the pain. For 15 hours after my epidural I couldn't feel my lower half; I couldn't move or walk or get up. They had to take me to the recovery floor by stretcher because of it. At about 6 pm I finally could somewhat feel my legs and got up for the first time.

I seriously cannot believe how easy the recovery has been this time around. I haven't had any pain (other than my back, from the epidural, and hips) and I feel great. I was up and walking and moving fairly normally within 24 hours. In fact, Anistyn and I were doing so well they let us go home a day early. It's been so easy that I didn't even need to fill my pain medication prescriptions. I am so thankful for an easy recovery, especially with 3 others who would be home with us shortly.

Speaking of the other 3 kids, my mom still had the girls and on Sunday (the day after I had Anistyn) she had taken Lincoln to stay with my sister in St. Joe so he could play with Micah. The plan was the girls would come home on Monday and my sister was going to come up on Wednesday to bring Lincoln home and see Anistyn. However, Monday late afternoon Kasey called and said Lincoln had been screaming because his ear hurt and he was running and fever and fell asleep by 5pm. I knew he must have been sick, so Ty met Corey and picked Lincoln up and brought him home. Nothing like getting back into the swing of things right away. Anistyn had a well check on Tuesday morning to check her weight, so I figured I might as well take Lincoln in too. Anistyn was down to 7 lbs. 5 oz. but that was very normal. She looked great and is a healthy baby, which we are so thankful for! Lincoln was diagnosed with a bad sinus infection. I've never had one, but have heard they can be very painful. We got him on antibiotics and he's feeling much better already.

It's so great to have us all home and under one roof! The kids have really taken to Anistyn and although it's been a bit crazy at times, I am thankful for how much they love her. She's constantly getting woken up to be held because Emmersyn is trying to shove a nipper in her mouth, but she's fairly patient with all the poking and prodding.

Today, she is 9 days old and last night she already slept through the night. I fed her at 9:30pm and woke her up at 7am to eat (I NEEDED her to eat...). I couldn't believe she slept that whole time. Although, I know not to get used to it because it probably won't happen again for a LONG time! She's such a good baby and she already feels like she's been apart of this family forever. I absolutely LOVE having a newborn again and have take full advantage of letting Ty take over with the older 3 and cuddling with my newborn! What a precious gift from God she is, for that we are so thankful!

Field Trip: Fire House

A few weeks back, it was fire safety week. Most schools have fire trucks and firemen visit and the kids get to check things out and learn about fire safety. Well, since I'm homeschooling my kids, I wanted my kids to have the same experience...just better! One morning, a friend and I took our 6 kids to the local fire house to check out the fire trucks, the fire house and say hi to the firemen. The kids had a BLAST and the firemen couldn't have been more kind, loving and patient towards our kids (they were all young guys and most had small children our kids' ages!). All week I spent time showing the kids were our fire alarms were, teaching them what to do if I fire happens, and doing lots of fire safety activities. We all had fun, but the highlight was definitely their visit to the fire station!

39 down, 1 to go!

Here is my 39 week belly picture. Holy cow, I'm huge. I feel relatively good, unless I have to walk or sit or move, really. Let me be completely honest with you...I'm pretty much miserable unless I'm not moving. I feel good, but anytime I walk it's seriously painful! Maybe it's because I get so big or maybe it's just because I'm 9 months pregnant. I'm trying HARD not to complain, yet be real with you all. I had my 39 week appt. on Friday. Baby looks great still. She's very low, but I'm not dilated at all (which doesn't surprise me one bit, I never am before I go into labor).

I've put on 33 lbs so far. Not too bad, 35 is about my "usual". The doctor doesn't seem to think she's coming really soon and she said she'd let me go a week and a half over due before they induce. I was actually really surprised she said that, knowing how big my babies get. She doesn't seem to think this little girl is huge, but I'm not as convinced. I really don't want to be induced, but also don't want to end up having a c-section because the baby is so big. Hoping we can making the right decision for me and for the baby. I think we've come up with and settled on a name for this sweet babe, but really haven't discussed a middle name yet.

I'm nervous, yet feel at peace, with adding this baby to our family. I know it's going to be a lot of work having 4 small children while homeschooling along with doing all the other wifely and motherly duties. I also feel really great about having a newborn in the house again, I love having a newborn. (I just don't look forward to the lack of sleep) Ty will be taking a week and a half off of work and I look forward to that time with him home. He's always such a great help with the older kids, especially.

Thanks for all your prayers and support throughout this pregnancy. I look forward to updating the blog with pictures of our newest addition!

Pinterest

I'm pretty sure the past month my "nesting" before the baby comes has turned into doing projects...rather than cleaning! Poor Ty, many of "my" projects turned into "his" projects...since I can't paint or stain anything.

I don't really consider myself a "crafty" person per se, however, being the perfectionist that I am, I can copy and follow instructions really well :). I could never come up with this stuff on my own, but if the plans are laid out for me I can usually do it.

I got most of the ideas from pinterest and love how they turned out!! Here are a few of the projects I've been working on the past month:

Pottery Barn knock off growth chart!

Ty's grandma gave us this old, antique dresser a while back and I fell in love with it. I thought it was so cute, especially with a little makeover! It's GREAT quality and I thought it'd be perfect in the little girls' room when they start sharing a room! Above is the before picture!

Dresser AFTER, new paint and hardware

 Tutu dress Hair bow holder

close up

Tutu dress hair bow holder #2 (because 1 is just not enough when you will soon have 3 girls!)

This is probably a weird quirk of mine, but I HATE when the sponge and dish soap are sitting out on the sink. However, I also hate putting it under the sink and having to get them out 50 times a day. I used a candle stick holder and a wooden bowl to make a holder for the sponge and used mason jars with soap pumps to hold the dish soap and hand soap! I think it turned out well. To me, it looks so much better than having it all sitting out and it's functional!

Centerpiece box for the table. This was really easy to make and I love the versatility to it. For the fall I have it filled with gourds (I need to get more), for Christmas I thought it'd be cute filled with ornaments.
