Dead Man - A Film By Jim Jarmusch - music by Neil Young

Dead Man is a 1995 American acid Western film written and directed by Jim Jarmusch. It stars Johnny Depp, Gary Farmer, Billy Bob Thornton, Iggy Pop, Crispin Glover, John Hurt, Michael Wincott, Lance Henriksen, Gabriel Byrne, Mili Avital, and Robert Mitchum in his final film performance. The movie, set in the late 19th century, follows William Blake, a meek accountant on the run after killing a man. He has a chance encounter with enigmatic Native American spirit-guide "Nobody", who believes Blake is the reincarnation of the visionary English poet William Blake.

Described by Jarmusch as a "Psychedelic Western", the film is shot entirely in monochrome. Neil Young composed the guitar-dominated soundtrack with portions he improvised while watching the movie footage. Many have considered it a premier postmodern Western. It has been compared to Cormac McCarthy's novel Blood Meridian.

Dogs In Space (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) - various artists

Dogs in Space is a 1986 Australian film set in Melbourne's "Little Band" post-punk music scene in 1978. It was directed by Richard Lowenstein and starred Michael Hutchence as Sam, the drug-addled frontman of the fictitious band from which the film takes its name.

The soundtrack album was released on Chase Records in February 1987 (CLPX14), featuring several tracks from reformed "little bands" and other contemporary tracks of the time.

The album came in two versions: a censored version in a white sleeve with a band name bowdlerised to "Thrush and the C***s" and possibly-offensive song vocal tracks removed, and an "R"-rated version in a black sleeve with all band names in full, movie dialogue between the songs, and all vocal tracks in full. The album's liner notes were written by Clinton Walker.

Chase Records went out of business soon after and, despite much effort, the record has never been reissued and has remained unavailable since. It is now a collector's item, commanding high prices. It was only available on LP and cassette and was issued on CD.

Das Boot (The Boat) is a 1981 West German war film written and directed by Wolfgang Petersen, produced by Günter Rohrbach, and starring Jürgen Prochnow, Herbert Grönemeyer and Klaus Wennemann.

An adaptation of Lothar-Günther Buchheim's 1973 German novel based on his experiences aboard German submarine U-96, the film is set during World War II and follows U-96 and her crew, as they set out on a hazardous patrol in the Battle of the Atlantic. It depicts both the excitement of battle and the tedium of the fruitless hunt, and shows the men serving aboard U-boats as ordinary individuals with a desire to do their best for their comrades and their country.

various artists - Dream With the Fishes - soundtrack compilation

Dream with the Fishes was writer/director Finn Taylor's directorial debut in 1997. The film follows a suicidal man who forms a friendship with a terminally ill man. Taylor has claimed that the film is loosely autobiographical. Taylor himself once spent six years traveling around the country with a friend. In one interview, Taylor claimed, "When I was 19, I contemplated suicide and attempted to hold up a drug store." The film debuted at the Sundance Film Festival, and would go on to earn $460,000 in limited release. The film also received a relatively positive reception from critics. Roger Ebert said that the film, "shows some of the signs of unchained ambition." The Los Angeles Times said "of all the towering blockbusters this summer, 'Dream With The Fishes' has more heart than the lot of them."

Dingo...original soundtrack...music by Miles Davis and Michel Legrand

Michel Legrand arranged, orchestrated and conducted the music for the 1991 movie that co-stars Colin Friels and Miles Davis as a jazz legend - the fictional character, Billy Cross - who lives in Paris. It traces the pilgrimage of John Anderson, an average guy with a passion for jazz, from his home in outback Western Australia to the jazz clubs of Paris, to meet his idol, jazz trumpeter Billy Cross. Nice combo between two great artists.

Miles and trumpeter Chuck Findley share the playing throughout the album and the pieces fit well within the framework of the movie. Some unusual tracks; a blend of music and dialogue in parts. Hearing miles talking is cool, though maybe not to everybody's taste. There is still some good Miles trumpet playing here and a worthy edition for a serious Miles Davis collector.

The Dish..Music from the Motion Picture..with Score by Edmund Choi

This year 2000 Australian movie is about a remote outback antenna, populated by quirky characters, that played a key role in the first Apollo moon landing. The soundtrack is what I would term the "perfect soundtrack", in that the collection of iconic 1960's songs featured in the movie take up the first 13 tracks, and the score, composed by Edmund Choi and performed by the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, takes up the next 15 tracks. An easier way to listen to a soundtrack I think, especially one as good as this.

Down in the Delta soundtrack: Music from and Inspired by the Motion Picture

Sometimes when a record company/executive producer tries to combine two different artists from different musical genres to accompany a movie, it is usually a recipe for disaster. This isn't the case with Down in the Delta, the soundtrack to the movie of the same name starring Alfre Woodard.

Featuring an international "who's who" in R'n'B, alternative, blues and jazz, it (like some other soundtracks) goes  hand-in-hand with the movie. Hearing D'Angelo singing "Heaven Must Be Like This" make you wish you could see how heaven is. "Patchwork Quilt" by Sweet Honey in the Rock is another highlight, so sweet yet so haunting. "If Ever" by Stevie Wonder reminds you of  nice summer's day and everything is well. Luther's contribution "Only Human" is also another winner making it mellow yet seductive.

"One of the best things about multiartist soundtracks is the opportunity for creative pairings that otherwise might not happen. It's also common that an abundance of superior talent won't necessarily yield spectacular results. It works both ways here." -- USA Today

1. Believe In Love - Sunday
2. God's Stepchild - Janet
3. Heaven Must Be Like This - D'Angelo
4. If Ever - Stevie Wonder
5. Where Would I Be - The Leverts

Dueling Banjos by Eric Weissberg, Marshall Brickman and Steve Mandel from the Original Soundtrack to Deliverance

Is this a movie soundtrack or a bluegrass album? Well, it is both, actually; the soundtrack to the movie Deliverance and probably the album that introduced bluegrass music to many people who may not have heard it before. If you like guitar and banjo pickin' music, then this album will more than satisfy your needs. The fact that it was originally released back in 1972 makes it all the more interesting as it still sounds fresh today.

Amazon review:
Wonderful, exhilarating, breathtaking music, both in speed and execution. Banjoist Eric Weissberg has spent most of his career in relative obscurity as a studio musician, which is a shame as he is one of the finest banjo players to ever pick up the instrument. City born and musically educated at the University of Wisconsin and Juilliard, Weissberg was a seminal banjo picker who combined the power and taste of Earl Scruggs along with the progressive melodic banjo stylings of the 1960s.

Obviously, the album features the definitive version of "Dueling Banjos" that Weissberg recorded with Steve Mandel. The rest of the tracks come from an incredible album called "New Dimensions in Banjo and Bluegrass," released by Elektra in 1963. Most of the tracks feature brilliant dual arrangements between Weissberg and Marshall Brickman, a banjoist who left the music world behind to write movies for Hollywood (The Bad News Bears, co-writer for Annie Hall). They are backed by guitar legend, Clarence White, who creates beautiful backup runs on songs like "Pony Express" and fine solos throughout. I think the fiddler was Gordon Terry, whose atmospheric style on "Reuben's Train" will make your hair stand on end.

The album is loaded with famous and oft-copied banjo licks, including the descending single-string work on Little Maggie, the "bumblebee break" on an insane version of "Shucking the Corn," the C-F-E-C chord sequence on "Riding the Waves," and some of the fastest (and cleanest) banjo work you'll ever hear anywhere on songs like "Rawhide" and "Hard, 'Aint it Hard".

Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood...produced by T Bone Burnett

With the soundtrack to Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood, producer T Bone Burnett has compiled another gently nostalgic gem. Filled with covers of jazz standards, sparse blues picking, and traditional Cajun pieces, Sisterhood matches Brother in ambiance and impeccable musicianship. The highlights are numerous: Bob Dylan's lively song waltzes with a raspy narrative, Lauryn Hill uses acoustic plucking to complement her soulful croon, and Bob Schneider contributes an understated love-ballad rumbling with piano. Even the cover songs are first-rate; Macy Gray jive-jumps through a faithful Billie Holiday cover, and Tony Bennett slows things down with a dapper and distinguished Nat "King" Cole homage. Despite the diffuse genres covered, the superior quality of Sisterhood's songs renders these differences negligible, and the album's pacing ensures a pleasing alternation of styles that never lags. In fact, there's nary a bad song on the entire album. The divine secret's out--Sisterhood is an essential listen. --Annie Zaleski..AMAZON..
