A Mediterranean tragicomedy in two acts and with no comments

Act1: Tragedy
The IDF Spokesperson's Unit confirmed on Monday that the Southern Command carried out a scheduled detonation aimed at destroying a new terrorist tunnel which was in the process of being built. The tunnel was located near the border fence with Gaza, near the South Gaza city of Khan Yunis.
IDF blows up Gaza attack tunnel, killing 7 Palestinians and wounding 12 inside
Most of the dead are Islamic Jihad members.
With an important proviso:
The explosion took place inside Israeli territory....
Intermezzo

Hamas response':
“The response to this massacre is to move forward toward the restoration of national unity because the enemy knows that our strength is in our unity and no people under occupation can win if they are not united,” Haniyeh said.
Hezbollah's response:
The organization denounced "Criminal Israeli belligerence and considers it a continuation to the Zionists' policy of aggression and strangulation towards the strip and its residents. This new Israeli aggression serves as testimony to the Israeli enemy's barbarous and criminal nature, as they continue harming the Palestinian people while some try and present them as friends of the Arabs."
Act2: Comedy

Islamic Jihad with its spoiler:
Senior Palestinian militant says detonated tunnel intended to kidnap Israelis
Palestinian Islamic Jihad militant reveals that terror tunnel IDF blew up Monday meant to 'free (PIJ) prisoners,' implying it was intended to kidnap Israelis to exchange for imprisoned terrorists; 'We have the right—blood for blood,' says militant.
And now to the cherry on the top:

Qatar: IDF bombing of Gaza attack tunnel violates Palestinian rights
The Qatari Foreign Ministry on Wednesday said the IDF’s destruction of a tunnel leading from the Gaza Strip into Israeli territory earlier this week was a crime against the Palestinian people that hampered their legitimate rights.
Legitimate rights?

Oops, it was almost a comment...

Hat tip: Peter.

Yes, peace is just around the corner

1st Sgt. Hadas Malka, z"l
Once again, Jerusalem became a scene of bloody terror, once again the target of the terrorists was a beautiful young woman with her whole life ahead of her.

The terrorists were killed, and the usual vultures are already fighting for the doubtful honor to adopt the martyrs. Daesh vs. Hamas. There are reasons to believe Hamas in this case and to believe their statement about the "political" affiliation of the murderers.
"ISIS's claims is an attempt to muddle the map. The attack was carried out by two Palestinians belonging to the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, and a Hamas member."
But for me, the fight of the vultures is overshadowed by the response of our alleged "peace partner", the so called Palestinian Authority. Here is what they have to say:
"We condemn the war crime committed by the Israeli occupation forces in Jerusalem tonight against three young Palestinians. The silence of the international community on the continuation of the occupation and its crimes encourages Israel to shed the blood of the Palestinians," said Osama al-Qawasmi, a spokesman for the movement's spokesman, who continued to say that "the crime that took place this evening in cold blood and claimed the lives of three young Palestinians. The victory of the blood of the Shahids will be adherence to the land, the holy places and their protection."
Indeed... three innocent young Palestinians out for a stroll in the streets of Jerusalem (the gun and the knives being just a part of the national attire). Nope, I am not going to comment on this more.

I just wonder about the unabashed optimism of the State Department and their chief.

Another sad confirmation of Golda Meir's quote validity

This is not exactly a day to score political points, although it's not about politics but about inhuman barbarism permeating the Palestinian society at all its levels. The relentless support for the cult of murder under a nationalistic guise, pushed by Palestinian media, Palestinian leaders and Islamist clerics, does its work - day after day.

And this morning started with another tragic expression of the cult:
Hillel Yaffa Ariel, a 13-year-old Israeli girl, has died of her wounds after a terrorist broke into her house in Kiryat Arba and stabbed her in her bed Thursday morning. The Palestinian terrorist climbed over the security fence surrounding the Harsanina neighborhood, infiltrated one of the houses located just yards away from the fence, and stabbed Ariel, critically wounding her. The girl suffered from stab wounds all across her upper body, and was evacuated to the Shaare Zedek Medical Center in Jerusalem where she later died of her wounds.
And the response of the 17 years old murderer's mother:
My son died as a martyr defending Jerusalem and the Al-Aqsa Mosque,” the Palestinian Media Watch organization quotes the mother of Muhammad Tarayrah as saying. “Praise be to Allah, Lord of the Worlds, he [my son] has joined the martyrs before him, and he is not better than them. Allah willing, all of them will follow this path, all the youth of Palestine. Allah be praised.
Not a new response, not at all, we all have heard it countless times.

And the point I wanted to make is simple. I have encountered several times on different forums people (Jews included) decrying that old saying of Golda Meir:

Peace will come when the Arabs will love their children more than they hate us.

Tell me again how it is wrong and racist, please.

Kogalymavia flight from Sharm El Sheikh disaster: the investigation is over, the response coming

The end of the investigation part was clear and unequivocal:

An IED (Improvised Explosive Device) with capacity of up to one kilogram of TNT exploded on board the A321 in flight ," said the head of service [FSB]. According to Bortnikov, traces of explosives of foreign manufacture were found in the wreckage of the ship.
The single action item demanded by Putin was no less unequivocal:
President's press secretary Dmitry Peskov said that Putin, after hearing the report of the head of the FSB Alexander Bortnikov on the terrorist attack on board a Russian A321, ordered the Russian special services to find those responsible for the crash of the plane and eliminate 'all these people.'
Since FSB and its predecessors are not known for their overindulgence in finesse, a lot of scalps, including these of totally unrelated folks, will be brought home.

Update: Egypt, however, doesn't concur with the bomb version.
As the country's prime minister, Arif Ismail said, Cairo will take into account the input from the Russian experts during their investigation of the causes of the crash, and if confirmed, will cooperate with Moscow in apprehending criminals. However, at this point, stressed Ismail, Egyptian investigators did not find evidence of crime in the crash. Moreover, Egypt's Interior Minister Abdel Ghaffar said that the investigation did not reveal security breaches at the airport.
Of course, Egypt and Russia have incompatible preferences for the outcome of the investigation. Egypt is facing a disaster for its tourist industry if the bomb version is confirmed. Russia, all in all, prefers the bomb version that allows its leader(s) to ride the favorite Russian image of the external enemy (Daesh in this case).

About the aftermath of Paris massacre

The thoughts below, were penned by David Sigeti on Facebook. Worthy reading.

I have refrained from posting these thoughts for about a day now, because I wanted to hold off from political debate in the immediate aftermath of the atrocities in Paris. Nevertheless, I think that it is important to make this point before the murders in Paris and the reactions to them by governments all over the world fade from the notoriously short attention span of the public mind.

The reactions of governments, including our own, to the terrorist attacks in Paris have mostly been very good. Expressions of solidarity have been the order of the day, and have been unencumbered by the sort of admonitions that undermine a statement of solidarity. There has been no false equivalencing, no admonitions to "both sides" to "refrain from incitement", no statements that imply that France is about to go on some kind of rampage against either its own Muslim population or Muslims in other countries, and no admonitions to France to exercise "restraint", even though the President of France has vowed to wage a "pitiless" war on the perpetrators of the attacks (an entirely appropriate vow, in my opinion).

But the same can not be said about the reactions of governments all over the world, including our own, to the wave of terrorist attacks in Israel over the last couple of months. In that time period, Israel has seen a number of terrorist murders that amount to about the same fraction of its population as the victims of the Paris attacks amount to as a fraction of the population of France. The statements of the American government in particular have shown nothing like the solidarity that it has shown with France, in the midst of an ongoing campaign of mass murder against Israeli citizens. In the beginning especially, the US made vague statements about deploring "violence" and called on "both sides" to refrain from "incitement", even though there was no incitement coming from the Israeli side at all and the terrorist wave was being openly and massively incited by all the political groups in Palestinian society, including the supposedly moderate Fatah, and by all levels of the leadership of Palestinian society, including the media, the religious leadership, institutions of higher education, professional organizations, and, of course, the Palestine Authority and its President, the supposedly moderate Mahmoud Abbas.

In fact, the early statements from the American government could hardly be distinguished from the disgusting statements by the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, who encouraged "both sides" to "show restraint".
Although American statements about the terrorist wave improved significantly over time due to domestic political pressure, they never approached the straightforward and plainly stated solidarity that has just been shown with France. Other governments, particularly the British and Canadian, made much better statements, but the international response overall was worlds away from the response to the attacks in Paris.

This is a massive and egregious double standard, especially since Israel is every bit as much an ally of the United States as France is, maybe more so. It is hard to imagine a clearer example of the failure of the Obama Administration to show support for Israel when it most needs it.

There, I said it. We can now return to mourning the victims of the attacks in Paris and discussing what we need to do both to punish the perpetrators and to prevent similar atrocities in the future. Let us just remember the massive and disgusting double standard that has just been shown, not just in attention in the international press but in the official statements of governments, including our own, and allow this memory to affect our thinking about Israel's situation in the future.

What should be said

Well said, Paul M.

It is early days, of course, and the report might be wrong. In any case, this is rather good news. The bounder with a penchant for cutting people's throats could do with a Hellfire up his arse.

UN Watch - 1, Chris Gunness - 0. Again.

The illustrious UNRWA spokesman Chris Gunness, best known for his crying bout of 2014, will not, probably, make a repeat performance in this case. Not in public, at least.

The whole business started with UN Watch uncovering and publishing the sad fact of UNRWA (a very special outfit, created to care about a single and singular case of refugees, but it is another story) employees developing a brisk side business. The business of incitement to murder - specifically to the murder of Jews.

The publication of these news found, as expected, a cold shoulder in the UN. However, the publicity has made its work, and, in a quiet and half-hearted way UN confessed to the misdeeds of its loyal servants:
Every allegation brought to our attention has either been or is being assessed, and where there are prima facie facts to support the allegation, in accordance with due process. Some allegations have been found to be authentic, others not.

Already, working closely with Facebook’s legal team, UNRWA has brought about the removal of more than 90 imposter or unauthorized Facebook pages. In some cases, it has determined the alleged ‘UNRWA staff’ are not in fact UNRWA employees or are no longer UNRWA employees. However, and very regrettably, in a number of cases so far, the Agency has found staff Facebook postings to be in violation of its social media rules. These postings have been removed and the staff have been subject to both remedial and disciplinary action, including suspension and loss of pay. The remaining allegations are under assessment.
Quite.

The above confession, however, was preceded by a barrage of indignant denial and what Hillel Neuer, executive director of UN Watch, aptly called "McCarthyite tirade against what he called UN Watch's 'baseless allegations about antisemitism'" from our hero, Chris G. Here is a starting tweet:
The rest of the tweets could be seen here, probably there are more...

Nor crying yet, Mr Gunness?

Gideon Levy - Mr Israeli Conscience and the boundless morality thereof

On October 11, 2015, about two weeks into the knifing frenzy, borne on the winds of the Al-Aqsa libel, Gideon Levy, the senior editor of Haaretz and baron of deceit industry (so anointed by another journalist), issued another cry (yowl?) caused by his hurt conscience. The headline of that (opinion) piece is Israel's Lawless Death Penalty Without Trial Buoyed by Cheers of the Masses and its lede adds another wrinkle:

The people of Israel see these pictures and most of them are filled with delight and pleasure, as the media inflames their animal urges.
(Emphasis mine). I shall go fisking the body of the article a bit later, now to the main point.

For me the words emphasized above are a confirmation of what I think about Mr Levy: his moral narcissism has already reached the stage where he lives by a simple dichotomy: Gideon Levy on one side and the unwashed barbarians aka Jewish population of Israel - on the other. Them heathens that rejoice at the sight of Arab blood on the streets.

This dichotomy alienates Mr Levy not only from the good (or not so good) citizens of Israel but from his own family, as could be seen here as well. But he is relentless in his brand of narcissism (already adequately explained, by the way). And, judging by his behavior, finds some perverse enjoyment in it.

Now, after we have dispensed with the main point, let's go to the less exciting part: the fisking. But first, I just have to remark on a change in appearance of Gideon Levy that becomes more and more pronounced with years:
Notice how the face of our hero loses its symmetry. You can take a look at earlier pictures and see that it wasn't always that way. And I cannot restrain myself from quoting a sentence from "Master and Margarita" by Mikhail Bulgakov:
In a week I was there again and was received by a maid with eyes slanted toward her nose due to incessant lying.
I would loath to reject the evidence coming from one of the greatest writers ever breathing the Earth' atmosphere. So lying does cause deformation of the facial features. Beware, Mr Levy!

OK, now that I have that off my chest, we can start. And you know what: let's start with these bold letters in the lede. So Mr Levy says that most of us, Israeli Jews, are filled with delight at the bloody Arab carcasses in the streets. Only there is not a shred of proof supporting this statement. I can bring an anecdotal evidence of several tens of my friends - not a single one does rejoice. Since nor I nor Mr Levy can base our claims on any poll or research - how about calling Mr Levy's claim a lie and (just for brevity) forget the ululating of happiness by the Arab crowds that hail each new "martyr"? Just call your claim a lie, Mr Levy, and hold the reins of your moral narcissism for a while.

Now another, quite stupid, paragraph from the article:
The grotesque element was provided by the attack in Tel Aviv. A Palestinian with a tiny screwdriver, who had stabbed and very slightly injured a number of Israelis, was shot to death by an IDF officer. Second Lieutenant Daniel became the hero of the day. Entire pages in the media were written about him, hailing him as a “combatant in an air defense unit who did what is expected of a combatant.” The stabber’s body, which nobody bothered to cover, the tiny screwdriver beside it, is Daniel’s citation. “Heroism at the Kirya’s gate,” screamed the headlines. These are your heroes, Israel, taking out desperate youngsters with a screwdriver who could and should have been arrested.
According to his Wiki bio, Mr Levy served in IDF only as a reporter. Still, even as a reporter he must know the rules of engagement, followed by the army, police etc. - and not only in Israel, but quite universally: when a citizen's life is in danger, the shooting is aimed at the center mass of the perpetrator - to stop and, if it so happens, to kill. The armed defender just doesn't have the time for that luxury of shooting at the perp's limbs. Nowhere.

Now to the second, even more amazing in its stupidity, point: the size of that "tiny screwdriver". Not to mention the sad fact that even a "tiny screwdriver" could kill, what should the above mentioned armed defender do, confronted with the bloody scene of the attack, general panic and the necessity to act immediately? Ask the terrorist to take a short break for measurement of the screwdriver? Or go ahead and shoot, praying that the shot will be enough to stop the butchery? In short, another inane yowl from Mr Israeli Conscience.

Anyhow, here is a collection of knives and other instruments of freedom struggle, collected in Hebron quite recently (source) from the well known tourist ship Mavi Marmara.

Shouldn't we ask our Voice of Conscience to sort out the tools presented above according to their homicidal value and write a field guidance manual for the police, the army etc? If possible, with methodology of the measurement of these tools in field conditions.

The picture, by the way, is not very good, but I can see a box-cutter or two... how about these, dear Gideon? I know, I know, the boxes wouldn't cut themselves. Right-o. To the next quote:
The people of Israel see these pictures and most of them are filled with delight and pleasure, as the media inflames their animal urges.
Yeah, it is an already familiar one, to strengthen the point of the absolute moral superiority of our Voice of Conscience over the rest of us. So I will go to satisfy my animal urges by watching the evening news. Meanwhile you can watch below what happens when a Jewish shooter (a good guy, no doubt) tries to restrict himself only to the shots that he considers necessary at two important points of the struggle.

Yeah, and try to hold your delight, pleasure and them animal urges under control, please. Bye.

Alberto Nisman’s Secret Recordings, Revealed

But nothing like that is going to happen now, at least while the current Argentine government remains in power and even afterwards, until its loyalists placed in the legal system have been removed or they resign. With Nisman dead, the driving force behind the investigation into the AMIA attack and the cover-up that followed has been removed from the scene. With the noble exceptions of Prosecutors Gerardo Pollicita and GermĆ”n Moldes, who did what they could to advance Nisman’s complaint, the other actors in the Argentine judicial system charged with examining it have reacted with a mixture of spasms of fear and snorts of contempt.

The government and the conspirators must be so pleased with themselves. Nisman is gone, his denuncia is blocked, and there have been no negative consequences for Argentina of any sort on the international stage. The investigation into Nisman’s death has descended into low farce, and the verdict of suicide that will probably be reached won’t be believed even by those who sign it.
An excellent expose by Eamonn MacDonagh every one has to read, if only out of respect for this man:

Then we'll kill us some Jews too...

The behavior pattern of murderous followers of the branch of Religion of Peace (that is not to be named by certain Western leaders by name) becomes more and more clear.

First they'll murder the infidels who desecrate the memory of the dear Muhammad PBUH in the Charlie Hebdo offices. Then they'll kill a few Jews, just for dessert.

Then they'll murder the infidels who desecrate the memory of the dear Muhammad PBUH at a free speech debate in Copenhagen. Then they'll kill a few Jews, just for the fun of it.

The Rage Boy has grown up, ladies and gentlemen. The Rage Boy is not into shouting and breaking windows anymore. He wants blood.

It doesn't matter anymore how adept you are in not naming the Rage Boy by his real name.

It doesn't matter anymore how subservient your are in acknowledging the Rage Boy's grievances, real or imaginary.

It doesn't matter how quick you switch off the TV in the security of your house, when they show the brown, black and yellow people murdering each other in far away places you shall never visit anyway.

Because the Rage Boy is in your streets now, and you can decide to remain deaf and blind to the danger. Or you can do your best to catch the Rage Boys and put them away for a long time or to kill them, whichever comes first.

Because, no matter the "randomness" and the "smallest extremist fringe" and the "grievances" - you are starting to be afraid, with a good reason.

So face it.

Update: now tell me you are not afraid:
The German city of Braunschweig cancelled a planned carnival parade Sunday because of a “specific threat of an Islamist attack,” police said.
...
Last month, Germany’s biggest carnival procession, in the western city of Cologne, banned a float paying tribute to the slain cartoonists of French magazine Charlie Hebdo due to security fears.

The float design, selected in an online popular vote, featured a man dressed in black with an explosives belt and a drawn gun and a jester shoving a pencil down its barrel.

Charlie Hebdo massacre and RoP tolerance

Gunmen have attacked the Paris office of French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo, killing 12 people and injuring seven, French officials say.
The magazine's latest tweet was a cartoon of Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, the Islamic State leader.
Another "lone wolf" act, not connected in any way to any other act of the kind, of course.
"This is an act of exceptional barbarism," French President Fracois Hollande said to reporters.

"This is a terrorist attack, there is no doubt about it," he said. The security level in the country has been raised to the highest position.
"Exceptional"? Not a good time scoring political points, no good at all, so I'll keep my big mouth shut.

Later. Now, my deepest condolences to family and friends of the murdered.

Update: even if it is too early, this cannot be missed. The date is November 2, 2011:
Okay, so can we finally stop with the idiotic, divisive, and destructive efforts by “majority sections” of Western nations to bait Muslim members with petulant, futile demonstrations that “they” aren’t going to tell “us” what can and can’t be done in free societies? Because not only are such Islamophobic antics futile and childish, but they also openly beg for the very violent responses from extremists their authors claim to proudly defy in the name of common good. What common good is served by creating more division and anger, and by tempting belligerent reaction?

Western media on Jerusalem terror or Palestinian media on same: who is better?

Sometimes I think that we here in Israel pay too much attention to the skewed coverage the local events receive from the main Western media outlets. Sometimes it seems to me that we are harboring unreasonable expectations from a reasonable world that just doesn't care what our expectations are - and why should it?

Of course, the yesterday's (November 18, 2014 for the record) headlines and contents of some senior members of the media world were somewhat bewildering. Starting with the now famous CNN's first headline:

Clearly it was an unintentional gaffe, created by a poorly informed editor, who wouldn't know a mosque (or a synagogue) from Red Lobster.  But then came the second version:

Doesn't smell like an innocent gaffe anymore, does it? More like a deliberate... and then, again, came a change (or a new twist, if you will).

Looks almost like reporting on results of an especially frisky football game, quite multicultural, isn't it? And the usual CNN (and BBC) penchant of setting the words "terror attack" in quotation marks. OK, later CNN has corrected that one after a while, doing "justice" to the two Palestinian "martyrs".

Of course, CBC tried to outdo CNN on that day, with its fabulous entry:

Mm... still not quite up to its big bro, but showing promise.

BBC came with its own contribution, from a bit more sophisticated angle. Unfortunately I haven't saved the original, so the cached version from Yahoo UK will have to do:

As you can see, to serve their unshakable political beliefs, BBC folks moved the synagogue in question to East Jerusalem. Of course, for a reason: that way they could explain ("no, we do not justify or condone such acts, we only explain them") the murder as a spontaneous act of freedom fight.

Then comes the Guardian... yes, I know that placing the Guardian in the same league as the above mentioned senior members of the media world is a bit reaching. But the Guardian "methodology" deserves a separate mention:
The website of British newspaper The Guardian ran a story about the attack from Reuters. The wire dispatch the agency sent included the headline 'Palestinians kill four in Jerusalem synagogue attack' and led with the sentence: ''Two Palestinians armed with a meat cleaver and a gun killed four people in a Jerusalem synagogue on Tuesday before being shot dead by police…."
However The Guardian changed their headline to "Four worshippers killed in attack on Jerusalem synagogue" and in their lead, they also excised any reference to Palestinians, publishing: "Two men armed with axes, knives and a pistol have killed four Israelis and wounded several others in a Jerusalem synagogue …"
The normally happily multicultural Guardian for some intangible reasons shuns the mention of the murdered and of the murderers' national identity. Ain't it strange?

The last but not the least in the litany of complaints about the intentional on unintentional slips of tongue and slips of finger is to be CBS (thanks to Peter that pointed to the following):
Introducing a report from Jerusalem, anchorwoman Nora O’Donnell says the following:
The two Palestinian attackers died in a shootout with police. It happened at a contested religious site in Jerusalem.
There is, of course, nothing “contested” about the Har Nof synagogue where the terror attack took place. Nor is there anything “contested” about Har Nof itself, a Jewish neighborhood in the western side of Jerusalem.
Well, looking at all of the above, the best way to summarize it was found by Francine Robin - "My tribute to CNN, that exemplar of accurate, unbiased, thoroughly investigative news journalism":

Quite. So let me offer a refreshing and straightforward alternative to all that double speak and the special, biased brand of political correctness of the Western media. Let's go to our cousins the Palestinians for a dose of fresh air. Here my Facebook friend, Dave McAvoy, explains the Palestinian TV clip (below):
This is the opening 40 seconds of a news report on Palestinian TV - this is the channel run and controlled by the Palestinian Authority - Mahmoud Abbas & Fatah.

This isn't Hamas' channel (Al Aqsa) or Jazeera, or Hizbullah's channel (Al Manar). This is the channel representing a side in these peace talks which Kerry & Obama are in a hurry to start. Again the thugs who went into a synagogue with meat cleavers and were killed by police are described as martyrs - martyrs of the 72 virgins go straight to paradise variety.

The language used here does not sound like that of a party which seriously wants peace or wants to reach any sort of agreement - and notice how it contrasts with what it says in English.

The news editors in this channel have to either run everything through the PA's Ministry of Information - or rather are told what to say by this ministry. No different to Syrian state TV news being dictated to by the Ministry of Information in Damascus. There is no editorial independence. None. This is as party line as it gets.

That, of course, a day after Mahmoud Abbas, the two-faced Palestinian "President" condemned the massacre. Now you know where to go if you want to get some undiluted, prime quality hate, unencumbered by the stale and smelly burqa of political correctness.

Now you know.

David Horovitz on the multiple murder in Jerusalem synagogue: some people should listen to this

David Horovitz at his considerable best:

Because the final thing that has to be put in writing, even on a horrible, evil day like this, when the fingers loathe the necessity to tap the keyboard, is that it’s not going to work. Palestinian terrorists, and those who incite them and support them, should know: We are not going to be shot and stabbed and bludgeoned out of here by your brutality and the false justifications you invoke to legitimate it.

We stood firm during year upon year of Second Intifada terrorism, when you were blowing up our buses, malls, restaurants and supermarkets, and pragmatism could have dictated that we do what the terrorism was designed to make us do: flee. We do not insist on maintaining our majority Jewish state to the exclusion of your rights. Anything but. We seek co-existence. But your rights cannot be achieved by denying us ours.

For this is the homeland of the Jewish nation, the only place we have ever been sovereign or sought sovereignty. And what needs writing and saying, most especially on a terrible day like today, is that we will not be driven from it.
No, it is not going to work.
