Whoa...it's been a year.

Hello all,

I realize that it has been over a year since my last post. Sheesh...time flies. Last year was a good one. The girls are growing up and are becoming older (Graycie is a pre-teen, GULP) and more and more talented all the time. Graycie played volleyball last year and is really enjoying that. Kenzie spent a lot of her time taking swimming lessons. She is a good little swimmer. This summer was  a little more low key than our usual summer load. We enjoyed swimming in our community pool, and the girls took summer swim lessons. The major highlight this summer was Kenzie's baptism! Kenzie got baptized on August 5th. We were so blessed to have some very special visitors in town for Kenzie's baptism, as well as our families. It was a beautiful day, and the spirit was very strong. It is definitely a day that our family will never forget. Thank you for all who helped to make it possible! We love you.

The girls just started another school year! I can't believe it. Kenzie began her adventures in 3rd grade, while Graycie started 6th grade and entered middle school this year! So far that transition has been a bit rough, middle school is a whole different ball game than elementary school. Hopefully she will settle in and things will get easier for her. Kenzie has also had her trepidations about 3rd grade, but she is muscling through. She would just rather stay home with me! :)

Fall is in the air here in Colorado Springs and we are getting excited for the change in colors, smells, and all the fun Holiday's that come with Fall. Kenzie has decided she will be a zombie for Halloween this year, Graycie is still trying to decide. As of right now she is debating between a crayon, a gumball machine, or a mouse. Guess we will see......

Happy Fall to all of you, and enjoy a few of the pics from Kenzie's baptism day and the girls first day of school.

So Long Summer!

Summer is officially over. The girls started back to school a few weeks ago. This summer was a lot of fun. We went camping, we went to Lake Powell, we went to Breckenridge with cousins. It was a crazy, busy, summer. Even though it is sad that it is over, we were kind of excited to get back into a routine (okay, maybe I was glad to get back into a routine).  Plus, I am excited for Fall! Fall means soup, fleece lined leggings, football games, and some really great Holidays!

This Summer we got to spend a lot of time with our families. My sister and her hubby and kids moved to Denver in July. It has been so fun having cousins so much closer to us. We also got to see Dustin's family. They made the trek to Breckenridge and we spent a few days exploring the town and enjoying the mountain air.

School is going well so far. We took our traditional "first day of school " pictures. I can't believe how much the girls have grown over the summer. I always get nervous when school starts, I want the girls to have good experiences and make good friends. I think that is happening so far....I hope they have a great year!

Enjoy the pics!

Mexico!!

Well,

It has been a long while since I have posted anything. It is finally starting to look like spring here. The girls just finished up their spring sports through the YMCA. Graycie played volleyball and is learning how to overhand serve, by the end of the season she was really starting to get it....HOORAY! Kenzie played soccer...one word....BRRRRR!! Dustin and I both decided spring sports outside, in Colorado Springs, are the worst. Luckily Kenzie is tougher than both of us and it didn't seem to bother her much. They both had a great time and most of the time we had a great time watching them (when we weren't freezing). They have both decided that they want to play softball this summer. I tried to play it cool and pretend like I wasn't that excited it about it....but softball is definitely my sport and I am so stoked that they finally both want to try it.

In March Dustin earned a trip to Mexico, for being so awesome at his job. We decided to get passports and take the whole family with us. Our girls are getting old enough to travel without the extra "stuff" involved with really little kids. They are also both getting more flexible about their eating and sleeping schedules, which of course when you travel internationally you need to be able to be "off schedule" a little bit. They were both champs, for sure.

We stayed with Dustin's company at the J.W. Marriott in Cancun for the first few days. His company paid for our lodging for 3 nights. While were there we did some pretty amazing things. Academy Mortgage paid for us to all go to this amazing adventure park. We spent the day in underground river's, on ATV's, and ziplining. The girls loved ziplining and neither of them seemed scared at all. Neither of them were heavy enough to go on their own so one went with me and one went with Dustin, and then we would switch. It was amazing and on the last line we zipped under a water fall, which was a blessing because at that point we were all getting pretty toasty. They also had an all you can eat buffet, which was tasty. I am pretty sure both of the girls ate spaghetti, because you know, that's what you eat at a buffet while you are in Mexico. They actually did really amazing with the strange food choices, but when they did have a choice I noticed they went back to the "comforting, familiar, foods."

The hotel had an amazing pool, which we took advantage of one afternoon. We were also right on the beach, so the girls had fun going from the swimming pool to the ocean. While they appreciated the ocean, they both said that they preferred the pool. I think Kenzie and Graycie both had a ton of sand in "bad places" by the end of their excursion to the ocean and were grateful to get rinsed off and back in the familiar chlorinated water.

Academy Mortgage also paid for us to go on a dinner boat ride. We road on these Mexican gondolas, through a jungle river. They served very traditional Mexican food and we got to listen to all kinds of music. Each barge would drive up to the "music barge" and we would hook on for a bit and listen. The kids enjoyed dancing with the barge driver, and the adults even joined in a few times. When I asked the girls after our vacation what their favorite thing was, both of them said the boat ride.

After this, we decided to stay on a few extra days. Academy only paid for the first 3 days so we left our ultra fancy hotel and went out on our own. We checked out of our hotel and got on a bus, and went on a tour of both Tuluum and Chichen Itza. I had seen both of these ruins before, and so had Dustin. Of course neither of our girls had. I was a little nervous to see how they would do on such an "information rich" tour. Both of them did pretty amazing. It was one of the hotter days and so there was little complaining about being overheated, but all in all...they were champs. I think that the tour made a bit of an impression because both of them have talked about it since. Of course they remember the goriest parts of the tour (pretty much all of the talk about human sacrifice and torture...so you know, all the best parts).

That evening we were supposed to have reservations at a hotel more in the central part of Cancun. Just a tip, in Mexico, reservations mean nothing. We arrived at our hotel later than expected, because our tour went long. Upon arriving, the front desk attendant politely informed us that they had given away our room.... awesome. By this time it was 11:00 p.m. We had not eaten dinner and we were all exhausted and starving. With a little help from the front desk guy ( and Dustin's amazing Spanish speaking skills) we found another hotel with an opening. One problem...it was a death trap. The door to get in was broken and we couldn't get our key to work. In frustration I slammed my elbow into it, and it popped right open...awesome again. Then we went inside....gulp.....it had one blinking light bulb in the middle of the room. The beds were made for 8 year olds, and they looked very, very, VERY, much like a lice and bed bug brothel. There was some sort of tannish/brown stuff smeared all over the walls, and the closet had mold in it. You know those movies you watch where the main characters are running from some horrible villain and they can't use their credit cards because they will be tracked if they do? So, they trade their watches and jewelry for one nights sleep in a shizzy hotel room, run by a drug trafficking pimp? The hotel that we were at is where they shot that scene. Seriously, I freaked. Kenzie started crying immediately and kept saying "I DON'T WANT TO GET KRILL!!"  (she swapped the word head lice for  the tiny shrimp like creatures that whales eat...krill.  She had been learning all about krill in her science class at school and was certain she was going to come down with a bad case of "krill" from the bed). Graycie stayed pretty calm and stoic. I was pacing around trying to not totally freak....I failed, hard. Luckily, Dustin came to the rescue. He took his Spanish speaking rear end  and searched until he found a Ramada Inn. Luckily it was within walking distance. He also found a gas station and scrounged everyone up some delicious gas station fodder. Finally, around 1 a.m. we went to sleep on clean sheets in a lice free hotel room...whew.

The next day we went on a trip to Villadolid. It was a Mexican village a few hours away from Cancun. Our guide picked us up at the bus stop (we just took the Mexican version of a Greyhound to bus to the village). This was my favorite part of the tour. We went to an open air market, the kind that the Mexican people really shop at. We also got to visit a few different Mayan families and see how they live. Our guide (Vivianna) explained that her company would find different families that were in distress and bring they would bring their tours there. We would take them food donations, and buy whatever little trinkets they were selling. In return, they let us look around their homes, and one family even taught my girls and I how to make tortillas. Vivianna explained that her tour company wanted to encourage them to continue to work however they were able and discouraged us from just giving them money. She told us if we wanted to help that they best way to do it was to buy their products, allowing them to feel like they had earned the money that we gave them. It was so amazing. We ate lunch with one family, and Dustin and I paid for it dearly later, luckily both of the girls did fine with it.

It was an absolutely amazing trip, full of lots and lots of memories. I hope the girls learned a lot about what a wonderful country they live in and how much opportunity they have available to them. They were both able to pick out a few things to take to donate to the children in Mexico, and Kenzie had a hard time picking items that she was willing to part with. However, once we got there, and they saw the living conditions of the Mayan people,  I think they both wished that we could have done more. Viva La Mexico!!!

Enjoy the pics!

Christmas in Colorado

Hello all,

We celebrated Christmas in Colorado this year. It was our first Christmas in our new house, and it was a memorable one to be sure. On Christmas eve we went on a ride on the "North Pole Express Train." We drove to Canyon City to board the train. Guests were encouraged to board the train in their PJ's ( to mimic the movie "The Polar Express"). So before the girls got on the train they got to open a present...you can guess what was in it...new PJ's.

The girls had a great time on the train, we all received a cup of hot cocoa and a cookie. Then the girls played games with the elves in our train car, and looked out the window as we passed through the "North Pole", they even had a visit from Santa who gave each of them a special bell ornament for our tree.

After our train ride we went to Chili's to have Christmas dinner. It was delicious and the girls were in a great mood, which always makes family outings more fun! We drove home and had a quick family devotional and put the last ornament on our tree from our "25 Days of Christ" box (it is a new family tradition we are doing at Christmas time....it's super cool...look it up). Afterwards the girls set out cookies and milk and scampered off to bed. It was the quickest either of them got ready for bed (I LOVE that about Christmas).

The next morning we had a great time opening presents. Both were thrilled with their Santa gifts (Graycie got an electric razor scooter, and Kenzie got a battery powered moped). The rest of the day we spent riding bikes and scooters, playing with presents, and eating yummy food. That evening we went to a friends house for Christmas dinner. It was a wonderful, relaxing day.

After Christmas we headed to Utah where we got to see our Utah family. It was a wonderful Christmas break. It was a perfect reminder at the close of another year, that the most valuable things in life are the ones we love.

Ahh...enough with the cheesy..enjoy the pics.

Summer is over.

Hello all,

Summer is over.....I am actually excited for Fall. Fall is my favorite time of year. The girls just started school a few weeks ago. They both just started at a new school, since we moved a few miles away to a new house. So far, they both seem to like their new school and new teachers. They are making new friends and it is fun to be able to ride our bikes to school each morning.

We also just went on an amazing trip to California with the Sidwell crew. The girls loved playing with their cousins. Some of the highlights were 1. Going to Disneyland!!! 2. Going to LEGOLAND 3. Playing at the beach. We played HARD...and all of us came home exhausted. Thanks Grandma and Grandpa Sidwell, for one of the most fun and memorable experiences our family has had yet!

Kenzie and Grayice both had birthday's this summer. Graycie chose to go to the musical "Wicked" instead of having a birthday party this year. I took her to a matinee the day after her birthday, it was fun to spend some one-on-one time with just Graycie. She loved the play and even asked if I would download some of the songs to her MP3 player afterwards. She was in heaven and it was so fun to watch her bright eyes soaking in all the magic that is a Broadway musical.

Kenzie got to celebrate her birthday at Lake Powell this year. We made an Ariel birthday cake for her, and she got to open presents with Nanny and Ta-Ta an her Arkansas cousins. Afterwards we played "minute to win it" on top of the houseboat. I took some pretty great videos of the kids doing minute to win it games, one in particular included stacking chocolate ding dong towers on their foreheads. It was definitely entertaining!

Summer has officially come to an end. Halloween is just around the corner, so stay tuned for another update in a few months!

Enjoy the Pics.

We are still alive!

Hello World,

Sticking with tradition, it has been a long time since I have posted anything to the blogging world. A LOT has been going on these days. Graycie just wrapped up her 3rd grade year. She is gaining confidence and enjoying new things (like volleyball and swing dancing). She is making new friends and becoming a pre-teen (gulp).

Kenzie just graduated from kindergarten (sigh). She was so excited to graduate and often says "I have been waiting my whole life to graduate!" Her class and the other kindergarten classes had an adorable program for graduation day. Kenzie sang her songs for weeks.

Both girls got to participate in field day this year. We have had the craziest weather lately. It has been a soggy, raining mess all spring. It was a miracle that they even attempted field day. The field was a soggy mess so only 3-5 grade got to go up on the field. The little kids had to make do with the gym and the hallways for field day. It didn't dampen their spirits and they both really enjoyed it.

Our family just got back from a camping trip in Glenwood Springs. We met my parents there and had a good time hiking up to hanging lake, and fourwheeling the next day. Ta-Ta (what the grandkids call my dad...weird, I know) brought his new side by side. The girls fought over who would get to sit in it first, and enjoyed riding it.

This summer will be full of fun adventures....I will keep you posted. For now, enjoy the pics.

It was a tough hike for little legs...Kenzie was tired.
We rode the fourwheelers to Crystal, Co. coolest old mining town.
This was the big hit of the trip, Grandpa's new side by side.
