The Baba Nyonya community; also known as Peranakan is one of the unique community found in Melaka. This community has existed before the 15th century due to intermarriages between the Chinese traders and local Malays. Their existence and social standing have greatly increased with the marriage of Sultan Mansur Syah with Princess Hang Li Poh from China. The Cina Peranakan mainly resides along Heeren Street (Jalan Tun Tan Cheng Lock) & Jonker Street in the heart of Melaka city. Their existence could be seen clearly based on their unique house architecture, attire (Kebaya Nyonya & Kasut manek-manek), cooking and language (Bahasa Peranakan). The Language spoken by the Baba- Nyonya is a mixture of Malay and Hokkien.
11 of Jun, We had our trip to Melaka to see and experience the town and everything of Baba Nyonya. Our 1st stop: Baba Nyonya Heritage Museum. It placed in The narrow street known as Jalan Tun Tan Cheng Lock may seem a little run down now (for me), but in colonial times "Heeren" (as it was known then) was home to Melaka's richest Chinese merchants. I like the design of those building which look like taking us back into a old time. The museum presents Peranakan (assimilated Chinese) life during colonial times, showcasing the gewgaws and the little touches that distinguish the Peranakan lifestyle of its time. A nyonya introduce us about some history and daily life stuff about baba nyonya.
I realize that the life style of Peranakan had very strong chinese spirit, they do care about every single details of it. For example, The furniture, is built with no nails (these are bad luck in Chinese culture) and nail only used to spiked the coffin. More one interesting part: There's also a peephole in the master bedroom that looks down on the first floor visitor. According to what the nyonya lady said, if the master did't like the visitor, he/she will pour water down (Lol!).
Life of baba nyonya full with trad rules and the special 1: they didn't used Chopsticks in meal, but with finger. They're in chinese race. The museum is like many rich merchant households at the time, the house is crammed with stuff appropriate to the affluence of the family living within: wood furniture inlaid rattan, original with beautiful pattern marble table, tableware imported from China, and chandeliers imported from Victorian England. A guided tour is available to help you make sense of the place.
And then came to the ever popular Jonker's Street/ Jonker Walk. It is used to be known very much for its Peranakan antiques (ever now there are still alots of antique shops there), but now the street is also known for all things touristy- from nyonya kuih to the Nyonya cendol. We tried almost all the food of baba nyonya, and even had a little chat with the baba that selling nyonya kuih.
I decided to found out more about traditional Baba Nyonya Wedding (or Peranakan Wedding). As what the nyonya lady told, it is loaded with complex rites preparations and numerous ceremonies which lasts up to 12 days! It’s a very tedious process (both in preparations, time and money) that most of the younger generation prefers to skip some of the ceremonies.
Similar like their Chinese counterpart, the Peranakan put a great emphasis on choosing auspicious dates and times. However, their taboos are much more and strictly observed than the Chinese.
Match-Maker - As you have probably guessed, all the Baba Nyonya Wedding or marriages were arranged marriages. Normally, the elderly will seek the service of a match maker when they feel that their child has come of age to be married.
The match-maker can be a professional match maker (normally has a large network of friends) or he/she might be one of the close relative or friends. As a return for the successful match making service, the match maker will receive a red-packet (with monies) and roasted pig trotter.
Merisek - A group of elderly people (from the bridegroom family) will pay the short listed future-daughter-in law’s family a visit. This visit is known as “merisek“ , a custom that you could find both in Malay and Chinese community. The “merisek“ group is normally headed by the match-maker and a few elderly relatives from the bridegroom (The bridegroom parents will not participate in this “merisek“ visit). The “merisek“ group will inform the girls’family of their intention and to seek approval. They will not talk formally (in normal daily conversations) but talk in a mixture of quatrain or pantun. (Malay influence).
To ensure that the couple has a happy wedlock, they will ask for the intended girls’ date of birth or “Pek Zhi“ (八字). Later they will consult a Feng Shui Master to check the boy and girl compatibility with each other. After everyone has come to an agreement, a ceremony of exchanging gifts between the two families known as Lapchai (engagement day) will be held.
Cheo-thau Ceremony - Nowadays, the “merisek“ ritual has long been abandoned. The Baba Nyonya wedding ceremony starts with the performance of purification-and-initiation-into-adulthood rites. This ceremony or ritual is known as Cheo-thau. It is done by both parties (bride & groom) at their respective homes during auspicious hours agreed upon earlier.
Chim-pong Ceremony - Next is the Chim-pong or the coming-together-of-the-bride and bridegroom ritual. This is when the couple pays homage to heaven; earth and man before a special three-tiered alter called sam-kai. Elaborated preparations can be seen at the alter table. This ritual is very important as the marriage is dully solemnized during this stage.
The whole practice is guided by an elder known as Sang Kheh Umm or Mak Andam (Chief Mistress) to ensure the smooth flow of the marriage ceremonies and rituals. The Sang Kheh Umm is experienced in the obligatory rites & rituals of Baba Nyonya Wedding.
Every gesture and movement of the couple has been carefully rehearsed to synchronise with music supplied by a Chinese clarinet. This music is known as “Seronee“. The trademark of Baba Nyonya wedding is when the couple will have to walk sideway.
The First Look - The bridegroom will only get his first look at his wife when they meet in the bridal chamber. This is the time when the husband is allowed to lift the veil over his wife’s face with guidance from the Sang Kheh Umm again! (The veil needs to be lifted smoothly without dropping it on the floor). I could have imagined how nervous the bridegroom during the unveiling process and I dare to bet that some of them might have fainted after getting his first look at his wife! (Either too beautiful or the other way round.)
However, the wife is even then forbidden by tradition to steal a glance at her husband. It would be deem as immodest to do so as relatives and friends milling in and around the chamber. Her chance comes not long after both of them sit down for their first meal together.

Project Definition
For this project, we have been given 7 week to redesign a commercial website. My client is Cellnique, a brand about paramedical skin care. Seem i have to propose a new look for their website, so i go into detail with the company’s history and slogan. Their slogan is Beauty is about the passion of your well-being-Live it Lavishly. It been created in 1997 by Mr. Chew Wai Ming thatbelieved in effectiveness of combination of medical and skin care product. By the way, Cellnique also have a very clear vision as to build beauty lifestyle brands with international appearance & standards, and with cult like community. I read through all the information, and realize the original website’s color is too metallic and scientific. Seem cellnique have a very strong selling point in all its product which is use only the purest natural active ingredients and proven bio-tech in product. So, i have a idea to blend in more green color (one of their corporate color) to make their selling point look more outstanding. Simple template and design will been used in this part to provide user from can’t get
load the web pages, because there is alot of flash in the original website. I try to manage all the link and button, because the previous one is mess up me wheni try on it.
Current Site's Analysis & Goals
The company’s website play importantly to bring the users to know more about CELLNIQUE. For example: The product usage and information, shop locate, online facial appointment registration... Cellnique share a lot of information in the website,therefore it do need a very clear system to lead the user to every pages.
In this area, i think simple rollover effect is needed in every linked button. Try to make use of the empty space in the sites, it can be some images or comment or user. But the way,some icon is used to guide the user about the best product, log in, and shopping cart. The background is so metallic, I decide to change it. And use white color to make the page look more free and tiny.
Client's Analysis
The company named Cellnique, is a paramedical skin care company which selling all the bio-tech skincare product and also build up skincare Centre which is CEC (cellnique exclusive centre). Ad the expert on problem skin, they believe that great skin is a woman's best asset. So, CELLNIQUE provide consumer with courteous, expedlent and professional product of highest quality for all skin type. By the way, the company also devoted to the revolution of result-oriented, yet trusted, salon solutions aimed at achieving flawless beauty.
USP (Unique Selling Point)
Of course, Cellnique have its own USP as use only the purest natural active ingredients and proven bio-tech in product. Cellnique belief in believed in effectiveness of combination of medical and skin care product.
Long & Short Term goal
For the long term goal, cellnique having a very strong history background, it do bring trust to all users. A strong history background and experimental, It do upgrade the brand to a higher level, and prove to all the users not to misunderstanding about Cellnique nevertheless built beauty lifestyle brand with internationally. The name
of 'Cellnique' now is a guarantee to users.
For the short term goal, we can can have a very special promotion for some product. Seem Chinese new year and valentine is coming very soon, We can have some related promotion. It is to make the user try our product and once they try, they will 'stay tune' =) But the way, v can have online registration for some testing pack of our product. So, user can get it though our website =D
Target Audience
The target audience of cellnique mainly focus on female. From 16years old to 55year old.
Our product is ready for all skinstype for skin care in different age and skin problem.
Conpetitor Analysis
Cellnique's product having a average price on 50$ USD to 80$ USD. It consider as a high-class skincare product. SKII will be the main conpetitor to Cellnique ,because both product having almost same selling point as bio-tech. And the other conpetitor will be H20, NARS, CLINIQUE. They are all in the same level class.
