In Case You Were Wondering

I completed my Criminal Justice internship work at the Sheriff’s Office on February 12th. When I started my internship I didn’t realize that I’d enjoy it as much as I actually did. This internship gave me an opportunity to learn about several aspects of law enforcement that I wouldn’t have been as aware of otherwise.

Having an opportunity to observe the fingerprinting process, and learning more about how analyzing fingerprint data can greatly assist in law enforcement was very interesting to me. It was also enjoyable to be able to attend and observe a police cadet graduation. I gained a better understanding of the educational requirements and training requirements that the cadets were expected to achieve to become an officer. It was also beneficial to observe the interrogation rooms and the temporary holding facilities to gain a better sense of what being in those situations might actually feel like for suspects or criminals. I also appreciated that my supervisors and coworkers tried to provide me with as much detailed information as possible about what their jobs consisted of so that it could be a very informative learning experience for me.

The highlight of my internship happened during the final week. On one of my last days of work the Sheriff came to the department that I was assigned to work for that particular week and said to me: “Shan I just wanted to shake your hand and personally thank you for all of your effort during your time as a volunteer here with us. Everyone I’ve talked to, that you’ve worked with in previous weeks, indicated that you’ve been 500% more helpful than any volunteer or intern we’ve ever had working here. The commendable job you’ve done in your time here was also brought to my attention at a recent meeting as well. I wanted to make you aware of how appreciated and beneficial the quality of your work has been to the Sheriff’s Office.” It was a very good feeling to know that my work had apparently made some difference since I felt that I tried to put my best effort into completing the work that I was assigned.

Many of my supervisors and coworkers made an effort to wish me well in the future on my last day of work which was very appreciated. I’m grateful for the direction that this internship provided for me as I’m now more aware of what the potential employment opportunities are that may be available after I complete my degree. I’ve always really appreciated the continuous support from my family and best friends no matter what I have going on in my life as well.
