On Sunday Aug. 7th. I started having contractions around 11 pm. I was very concerned because my due date was not until Sept. 3rd. The contractions started getting stronger and more consistent. On Aug. 8th at 11 am we decided to head into the hospital. The nurse was also concerned about my early labor and so they decided to admit me into the hospital but would not do anything to help my labor progress. However, they were also concerned about the reason why I was in labor. Therefore, they would not give me any type of drug to stop the contractions. So in the hospital we sat and waited to see what my body would do. We hoped that my body would naturally stop the labor and that I would be able to stay pregnant for another week or two. I was very tired and ready for an answer. At 5 pm the baby's heart rate began to drop and delivery of the baby was the only option for his safety. So they started the magic drug and hard labor began. At 10:14 pm Kyson Daniel Bolton was born at 5 lbs 14 oz. The cord was wrapped around his neck and their were signs that he was struggling to breath.
The nurse allowed JC and I to spend a few minutes holding him and then the nursery came to get him for his bath and a check with the doctor. JC came back to my room with the news that Kyson would need to spend some time in the Newborn Intensive Care Unit (NICU). Due to his early arrival his lungs were under developed and he was struggling for air. At first, the nurses felt he would simply spend a few hours in the NICU and then be fine. However, the hours turned in to days. I sat in the room without my baby and was asked to only visit him every three hours. He was very sick and having a very hard time breathing. We were not able to hold him for a few days because he needed to focus all efforts just to breath.
So I came home. It had to be the worst feeling in the world to leave the hospital without your newborn baby. I came home and the visits to the hospital began. I felt torn between being a home with Ryker and Talya and spending time with my baby. Day by day the miracles began. Kyson's breathing began to slow down and he was soon able to drink from a bottle. I was finally able to hold him a little more often. There was a minor set back with his jaundice levels and he enjoyed the tanning bed for a few days. However, I could see that all the prayers for our baby were truly heard.
Eight days after Kyson was admitted into the NICU we were able to bring our little boy home. We had to spend the night at the hospital because we had to bring him home with monitors and oxygen. However, we were all super excited. Talya and Ryker could hardly wait to hold their new little brother. They were all excited to come and get Mom and Kyson at the hospital. That is also a day I will never forget, riding home in the car with my three children.
So he is home and life is a struggle getting back to normal. My days are filled with moving oxygen and monitors and feeding a newborn. JC has been wonderful and the kids have also been helpful. So, we are hoping to have Kyson off of oxygen this week but we know that we have all been blessed. We are thankful for the prayers of neighbors, friends and family. We are also thankful to the nurses in the NICU who loved our baby while we were unable to be there with him. We know that Lord truly has had his hand in our lives and we feel very very blessed.
