We've had 5 chickens for about a year now. It's been great. We adopted them from a friend's Aunt who had to sell her house, yadda yadda. We accidentally acquired a rooster. He's great too. The only problem is that although sweet and gentle, this little flock is pretty skittish. They were mostly left to their own devices and they aren't the chickens that come when called. However, they do put themselves to bed each night, quite punctually.

So, we decided to start another flock. The original crew resides at my studio and since buying a house, we've decided it's time for a new flock. We bought 6 chicks. We got 7. Of course. As I was picking out 3 of each of the 2 breeds I wanted (Buff Orpington & Araucana), I noticed one little chick with a really fucked up bulging eye. I notified the IFA (Intermountain Farmers Association) sales woman of the unfortunate chick. She handed the little bird to a 15 year old, gruff, teenaged-girl associate, and said, "will you see about this ones eye?" The girl returned about 2 minutes later declaring that she had removed some shell from its eye and ripped off part of its lens and that it would be blind in that eye forever. In unison they turned to me and said, "You wanna taker home?" I'd be the worst fucking human in the world had I not taken the damn charity chicken. So, alas, we paid for 6, and got 7. We named her Lisa Left Eye Lopez. She's pretty damn cool, even though when we first put her in the pen, she only turned in circles. Tragic. Anyway, come fall, these hussies will be spittin' out the goods. Go farm!

Doing is Half [read:Most] of the Battle

I get a little neurotic at times when it comes to overwhelming myself with ideas: good & bad. I just need to remember that even if it's quick & dirty and not perfect - it's worth doing.

Kyle Durrie of Power and Light Press out of Portland, OR, paid a visit to The Mandate Press while on her cross-country journey of America. She has been doing this for 2 years now in hopes to spread the good word of letterpress to all. We did a collaborative print that people could take away form the event. It was a great time, good people, sunshine, and all the other things that make things pleasant. Kyle is a great lady. If she stops in your town, give her a hi-five, and maybe some gas money.

So, in other news, I quit working at The Mandate Press - not like I've really blogged since I quit Overstock last year - but well, all of that happened. Now I'm back to the 9-5 for another Online Marketing Co. Oh the places you'll go. . . Hopefully not in circles forever.

Melancholy: Mix Tape

I was thinking about which emotional state was my favorite. Of course, we all love excitement, and joy. However, I find those emotions a little too intense and the come-down too steep. I prefer an emotion that lingers, a feeling that sways in and out. Somewhat tragically I came up with melancholy. It seems a little melodramatic, but it's the feeling of the moment right before it ends. It's got a lasting sensibility about it. Something resonates with the past - it's a nostalgic feeling. It's the second before the good times end and before the tragedy of loss actually sinks in. It's the moment in which the entire world spins around you and you sit completely still, speechless. It's a balloon floating into the atmosphere - an ice cream cone scoop side down on the asphalt - it's the moment before Michaelangelo's God touched the hand of Adam.

Foxy Shazam - And I Like It

sexietime

Foxy Shazam blew my mind the other night. What a great bunch of dudes. They know how to party and have a good time in the best of ways.

Some highlights of the performance were:

The lead singer's dedication to water by pouring a full bottle of it onstage.
Smoking on stage with the preface of "doing whatever the fuck you want".
The keyboardist crowd surfing his keys and playing them at the same time.
There were many countless wonders of rock n roll greatness at the show.

I'm really horrible at promotion of my own things. That combined with the fact that I haven't been blogging lately makes me a horrible promoter of anything, even shoes and kittens. These are some not-so-good photos of my last show: Tropicalia Periphernalia at Dexterity Salon in SLC. Usually I stick to painting and drawing as a medium, however, this time I dabbled in hand-coloured screen prints (thank you Travis Bone for the use of your studio). This means I did an edition of 5 each and this also means that I have som left, so if you're looking for some art, hit me up.

Decantered

So, it's been rough. Really, rough. It's one thing to lose the one person you idolize. It's another thing to have it drag out for years, and years. I've yet to put my mother to a true rest and my sisters and I have been challenged with going through her things 3 years past her date of death and it's not easy. Just when you think you've reached a point in which you've satisfied your expectation of what grieving is, you're riddled with another test of strength to persevere. I'll spare the details for the format, but it's entailed a 15.5 hour long mediation for an estate to remove a trustee (good luck), and a chance to enter her home for 1.5 hours and then be locked out again. It's an excruciating peep show, at best.

However.

I snagged this decanter. It makes me happy. Mostly, it's the simple things.
