Baste. Quilt. Bind.

Here's some info on basting, quilting and binding.

First you'll layer your quilt: bottom fabric(right side down), batting, quilt top (right side up). Then you baste...

Basting: click here for a great tutorial. You can also use a spray baste such as these instead of pinning.

Quilting: For this quilt I would recommend stitching in the ditch (along the seams of the strips). You may want to use a light colored thread on top such as cream and then match your bottom thread to the bottom of your quilt. You can also try free-hand quilting, here's a good tutorial on that.

Binding: There are many ways to do this. I'll give tutorials on just a few.

Self-binding: Look at the end of Nicole G's table runner tutorial for instructions on how to self bind your quilt. (No bias tape needed!)

Bias Tape: This tutorial includes instructions on how to make your own bias tape as well as the traditional way of attaching it. You can also purchase bias tape at Joann's. You'll want to make sure you buy double fold and I would recommend getting a larger size, at least 1/2".

Heather Bailey's Continuous Quilt Binding (My personal favorite)
Note: If you're going to use Heather Bailey's binding method you only need to iron your bias tape in half.

Time to Quilt!

Okay its definitely time to start this quilt. Hopefully most of you have your fabric by now. Before our first meeting if you could cut 20 of whatever size strips you signed up for, that way we won't waste time cutting when we're all together. You'll want to cut your strips the width of the fabric for example; if you're bringing 5" strips they should measure 5" by 44" give or take a couple inches, fabric widths tend to vary a little.

Our first meeting:
Thursday August 12th
@ 7:30pm at the Greentree church- we'll be in the gymnasium, I have it reserved so basketball will be canceled that night.
The address is: 46 School Street Pittsburgh, PA 15220

At this meeting we'll exchange fabric, go over the instructions and begin piecing together our quilts. We'll try to meet together a few more times but it would be helpful if everyone could be at the first meeting so at least all of us can exchange our fabric.

The Dental Wives Quilt

Four years goes too quickly when you're surrounded by great friends and fun times. We've laughed and cried together and have had lots and lots of babies while living in Pittsburgh. We all want to take a piece of that with us wherever we end up so this "Dental Wives Quilt" will be a little momentum of the friendships we've formed here. The quilt will have one strip of fabric from everyone participating, a little tiny piece of their personality and friendship.

Thanks to Nicole G's creativity we have a great plan for our quilt. This picture shows you the basic idea of the quilt is; different size strips with a couple of strips going perpendicular.

This outline shows you how our quilt will be pieced. The large perpendicular strip will be 10" tall and will be made with plain white fabric. Across that strip we will applique something like "Pittsburgh Dental Wives" in this font.

Pitt Dental Quilt

Here are the specifics for the rest of the fabric:
  • The final quilt size will be 56" x 80".
  • Everyone is to bring bright colored, cotton fabric, any print. E-mail Nicole with the fabric you choose and check back to see a log of what fabrics people are bringing.
  • Because there are different size strips, people will have to bring different amounts of fabric.
  • 5 people will bring 4 yards of fabric that will be cut into 7" strips (Elise, Nicole G, Carlee, Nicole J, Tiffany)
  • 3 people will bring 3 yards of fabric that will be cut into 5" strips (Rachael G, Lisa, Kimi)
  • 10 people to bring 2 yards of fabric that will be cut into 3" strips (Heather, Becky, Amber, Rachel Q, Jessica, Megan, Meredith, Marie, Helena)
  • Remember, if you're bring fabric for smaller strips you want to stick with a smaller print and visa versa.

Rag Quilts Materials

DATE CHANGE:
Thursday, February 18th, 2009

7:30pm at the Greentree Church

Rag Quilt Materials: Approx. 50" x 65" or 60" x 60" (Throw size)
  • 8 Yards of Flannel (can be 4 yards of 2 fabrics, 2 yards of 4 fabrics, etc.) cut into 9" squares
  • 1 throw size of light weight batting (60" x 60")
  • coordinating thread
  • spring loaded scissors (you can borrow mine)
Small Rag Quilt: Approx. 45" x 45 " (Crib size)
  • 5 1/2 yards of fabric (divided between how many different prints you choose) cut into 9" squares
  • 1 crib or throw size of light weight batting
  • coordinating thread
  • spring loaded scissors
Here is a great website that gives an overview of the different types of rag quilts you can make and what fabrics to choose. The instructions I'll be giving will be to use batting in between the layers of fabric versus cutting a third flannel layer that's sandwiched in between. Feel free to decide which will work best for your quilt. But keep in mind if your sewing 6 layers of fabric you will most likely need a walking foot on your machine.

These are measurements for standard size quilts (so you have more than just baby options). And you can choose your block sizes too, just remember your blocks will be 1 inch smaller than what you cut to allow for your 1/2 inch seam allowance on all sides.

Twin: 63" x 87"
Double: 78" x 87"
Queen: 84" x 92"
King: 100" x 92"
