Washington Street Supermarket

They don't make supermarkets like this anymore! The Washington Street Supermarket has been downtown since long before I moved to Selma, and it remains a popular place to shop for groceries and perhaps rest on the bench and have a soft drink.

Going Green

The vacant lot where the Phoenix Building once stood is greening up on Water Avenue!

The Red, White and Blue

"Let every nation know, whether it wishes us well or ill, that we shall pay any price, bear any burden, meet any hardship, support any friend, oppose any foe to assure the survival and the success of liberty." - John F. Kennedy

Going Under on Water Avenue

Work to remove above-ground utility lines continued last week along Water Avenue. The St. James Hotel can be seen in the background.

Skywatch Friday, Blue Skies Smilin' at Me

It's Friday, so Skywatch is on, and it sure seems that this blue sky is smiling at me.
This sky shot is framed by one of the the arches of The Harmony Club.

Visit more skies at Skywatch Friday.

Leaning Tree

Trees along the upper bank of Selma's riverwalk were removed this week, and kudzu will come out too.
Plans are to plant the upper bank with grass, but I was assured that there will be some shade along the walk.

Skywatch (May Sky over Selma)

It's a May day in Selma with blue skies and cotton clouds.
This photo was taken from the balcony of The Harmony Club on Water Avenue. In the background you can see the arch of the Edmund Pettus Bridge.

A Dog's World View

Cooper is one lucky dog! He can view his world from the open doorways and windows of his residence, The Harmony Club. From the second floor, he looks over power lines and rooftops to see the Pettus Bridge or sunrises and sunsets over the Alabama River. If you are ever on Water Avenue and look up, don't worry. While he may look menacing, I've been assured that this canine won't leap out on top of you!

ABC Wednesday, Q for Quaint

The original phone booth at The Harmony Club remains as part of the building's 10-year renovation as a three-story residence, and I think it's truly QUAINT!
Q is the letter of the week at ABC Wednesday, so head on over there for more Q pictures.

I Could have Danced (or watched a movie) All Night

My camera's on the floor, its lens packing in the great expanse of the third-floor ballroom/movie theater of The Harmony Club. Under renovation for the past decade, the century-old building on Water Avenue once served as a Jewish social club but now is owned by architectural consultant David Hurlbut who calls it home. The building was on tour during StreetFest last week, so I'll share more photos of this historic treasure later!
Meanwhile, head on over to The New York Times to read an article about this house in its Dec. 8, 2010 Home and Garden section.

All that Jazz

The Concordia College Jazz Band added even more flavor to the catfish lunch at  ArtsRevive's StreetFest last Friday. Playing a variety of tunes from Dixieland to Motown, lunch guests dined (and a few even danced) under the shed on the terrace that overlooks the Alabama River.

Sunday Scripture (I Stand at the Door and Knock)

"Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with him, and he with me." (Revelation 3:20, NIV)

What a friend we have in Jesus if we just open our hearts to Him!

This stained-glass window hanging was on display in a venue
at the ArtsRevive StreetFest on Friday.

I Hear a Symphony!

An overflow crowd gathered Friday evening to hear the Alabama Symphony Orchestra at Carneal ArtsRevive's riverside terrace.  The free event featured music linked to Alabama's heritage along with American and classical selections. The concert was part of the ASO's Education Tour through a state Department of Education grant. It was also held in conjunction with StreetFest and the Year of Alabama Music.

Bonnets and Parasols

At least once a year, I like to take a time trip back to the 1860s and go shopping! So last Friday evening, while waiting for the night cannon firing demonstration at the Battle of  Selma reenactment, this sutler's tent drew me in to admire pink parasols and flowered bonnets that once were fashion statements of the day!

Privet

Privet blooms may be beautiful to the eye, but they really overwhelm the sense of smell and cause many of us to sneeze as soon as we open the door!

Thou Shalt Not Steal (Sunday Scripture & a Snaphot)

This sign with God's commandment not to steal was displayed in a sutlery that sold pocketknives at The Battle of Selma Reenactment.
