Art Journal Page using Blue Fern Studios Chipboard

It’s been so long since I created something, and I must confess my hands were a little shaky too since I’ve been away from scrapping for what seems like an eternity.  This art journal page(s) features two of the new Blue Fern Studios chipboard.  The pretty, small intricately designed Blue Fern Flourish was torn into several pieces to create a partial frame around the photo and glitter and liquid pearls dress it up for even more glamor;  the Vintage Lock (four locks come in one package) was dressed up in some Tim Holtz tissue tape, inked around the edges and in the small intricate cut design work.  The simple background work was created with a stamp, mask, gel medium, tissue paper with fibers and two mist colors.

Steampunk-Gone-Glam

This is my first attemp at steampunk and, of coure, I had to "elegantize" it to glam it up a little bit.  I have use the Kosher Salt technique that I posted in an earlier post, I think it added a lot of texture and interest in this mini-album I created to house the techniques and/or tutorials I have posted this year.  The corrugated cardboard was ripped and torn in various places to showcase the finely detailed Imaginarium and Leaky Shed chipboard pieces that were assembled together to make it look "steampunkish".  The salt technique was added to some areas of the chipboard as well.  Originally, this started off as a tag but then I thought it would be more appealing to use as a cover to house the tutorials that were enclosed in clear sheet protectors that I cut down to size and sewn at the botton.

Lady Grey

I was inspired to use these colors upon seeing a woman walk into my office building wearing a grey pant suit, with a pale shell pink silk blouse and a cream scarf with little tiny pink pearls woven in the fabric, and, of course, she was wearing a strand of pearls.  She looked just exquisite in these colors.  I hope she didn’t notice my staring her down to absorb all the details.  LOL.   Later on that day, I went through my scrapping stash in my mind wondering if I could create a page inspired by Lady Grey wearing those exquisite colors and textures.

Using the salt texture technique I posted earlier,  some of the supplies I purchased from the C'est Magnifique ("CM") store which included the French Kiss - Glitz paper, and four staples (a challenge to members in the CM Forum),I created this page. 

My title on my page comes from an experience most of us un-goddess like ladies have experienced at one time or another.   While vacationing in Hawaii with some very dear friends, I was introduced to this Goddess.  She was tall, with long golden tresses, with perfect teeth and a smile, and had  gorgeous high cheek bones.   I was told she was a Miss something or another, I can’t remember what her title was at this time, but she fit the title perfectly.  J   I had mousy hair, a gapped tooth smile, and flat cheek bones, and at that moment, I wanted to become invisible in front of the Goddess standing before me.     Later on we were invited by the Goddess and some mutual friends to join them for dinner.  It would be ungracious of me to try to think of an excuse not to go so since I was invited to stay at my friend’s lovely home on this beautiful island.  I put on my best face and went.   As everyone was finding a place at the dinner table, the chairs starting filling up quickly around the table and there were chairs vacant next to the Goddess.  It quickly became evident to me that I might have to sit next to the Goddess.  My heart starts racing, and I’m thinking, “Please don’t seat me next to that pretty girl”.  Not only did I not want to sit next to the Goddess, I certainly did not want to be photographed with her as that would only enhance her Goddess like qualities. LOL.  Well, all my insecurities faded as the evening went on because this Goddess was warm, friendly, funny and terribly sweet.   She truly was a Goddess in every sense of the word by making me feel like we had known each other for a long time.

 

 

 

 



Walkie for Once Upon A Sketch

 

 

Here’s my interpretation of the quote and sketch for the October Once Upon a Sketch Challenge.

I’ve incorporated an actual negative from a 35mm camera in my sketch.  Fortunately for me the color of the negative blended in well with the 7 Dots Domestic Goddess paper collection. I didn’t realize it at the time I opened the kit package, because I was in awe over all the pinks and oranges in the papers and embellies, but there were a number of yellow elements to choose from too and I separated them from the kit and put them aside.  The theme of the OUAS challenge and papers and embellies came together really well, I thought. “Walkies” were common in the 1920’s throughout the 1950’s in England.  There were street photographers that would take pictures of unsuspecting subjects going about their daily lives, running errands, visiting fairs and vacationing in beach communities too.  These photos depicted fashion at the time, history and social status. The photographer would give you a ticket after they took a picture and if you were interested, you would drop by the studio and pick them up.  Here’s one of my unsuspecting grandmother running an errand in England in the 1920’s.

Keeping the Best Sketch Challenge ("Remember Prom")

I found a new sketch challenge site by following Georgia Heald's blog.  "Keeping the Best" posts a sketch challenge every two Monday's and it is open to international participation. The Design Team is consisted of some very talented and inspiring ladies, and I'm hoping to become a regular participant there.

I loved this sketch by Angela because of it's archectural elements and it inspired me to create a masculine page featuring one of my brothers.

Here he waiting for the phone call from his prom date to pick her up and take her to the prom.  He looks so anxious waiting for that call. 

On this page, I used a watercolor technique by applying Kosher Salt to a pool of various colors of Glimmer Mist.  Normally in watercolor, we remove the salt after the paint has thoroughly dried and it reveals a lovely texture and effect.  In this case, I really loved how the salt added so much texture and height and I chose to preserve it by adding some spray adhesive over the salt areas.  The salt stayed in place perfectly.  If you're interested in this technique, check out the tutorial I posted prior to posting this page.  It's really quite simple.

Kosher Salt Technique

Look as this yummy texture achieved by using Kosher Salt.  The size of the salt crystals are just perfect for layouts and/or your mixed media art.

The supplies shown in the picture are all you need to achieve this salt texture.  I'm only showing one color of Glimmer Mist in the photo, but I actually used a Lindy's Stamp Gang Moonshadow Mist (Smoky Sapphire) color as well.

 

Kosher Salt is often used in watercolor paintings.  When you saturate a section of watercolor paper with watercolor paint, and you pour some Kosher Salt on top of the paint and let it dry thoroughly, the salt absorbs all the color and you can then flick off the salt and it leaves a really cool effect. I would often use this technique on some of my watercolor art and thought why couldn't this work on a layout as well, so I set out to see if I could make it work.

In this case, I saturated some sections of corrugated paper with various colors of Glimmer Mist and Lindy's Stamp Gang Moonshadow Mist and poured some salt on the pools of color and let it dry with the help of a heat gun, but not too close as you don’t want the salt to fly off the paper. I would suggest you let the pooled colors with salt dry naturally. Once it was dried, I really liked the texture it revealed and decided to keep it as it was by applying a light mist of Elmer’s Graft Bond Spray Adhesive.  If you don’t apply the bond spray adhesive, the salt will eventually fall off the paper.

 

Unfortunately, that strip is a piece I had to cut off to make this creation fit on my layout that I was working on, but you can see all the cool texture effect the salt produced.

Namesake for C.S.I. Case #43

I loved these dramatic colors, and I was waiting for the perfect CSI case to come along so that I can use this sketch designed by Michelle Singh. The colors and the sketch blended together so beautifully.  Michelle’s sketches are like exquisite coloring book pages full of lovely little details.  I’ve used several of her sketches already and I love working with them. 

 

 

 

 

 

Have you ever thought your name was an old ladies name and wondered what the story was that inspired your parents to name you such a name?  I found out my story and documented it in “Namesake”.

Evidence: A damask embossing folder was used on the black colored strip and parts were sanded down to reveal the white underneath to also incorporate the “black and white” patterned paper evidence; ribbons, frame, and flourish.

Testimony: Used an older photo and tied the past together with the present in my journaling.

Gel Medium Resist Technique Tutorial

Check out how I created this background paper using the gel medium resist technique in the Inspiration Forum at C'est Magnifique.        

Devoted Sisters (Created with C'est Magnifique's November Kit)

 

I had just finished browsing a site that featured pictures of vintage corsets and ladies bodices of beautiful gowns, and as I started working on my last layout for the November kit, my eye caught a glimpse of a specific design in the lace that is in the kit. It reminded me of some of the bodice work in the vintage gowns I had viewed. I took a sketch I created for a page I did in our October kit and manipulated it so that I could replicate some of the vintage bodice gown work on paper. I really like how the lacy bits look with the buttons sewn on. A soft brown Shimmerz spray was used to make the white lace look aged and worn.

I got so much use out of that Prima vine in the kit, and I think I used portions of it on most of my November pages.  On this page, I applied gesso to the Prima vine lily flowers and let the red bleed through so that it would turn into a soft pink color to go with the colors in the page.   Distress Stain metallic copper was applied to the Prima vine leaves.

The clock was created with a clock stamp and an application of one splatter each of Distress Stain Sugar Spun and Antique Linen was applied on top of the stamped image.  When the stain dried, I applied Glossy Accent Crackle and let it dry overnight, then smeared a little dark brown Distress ink into the cracks and finished the edge of the clock off with the Distress Stain copper metallic color. The Scrap Ex flourish was embellished with a soft pink Liquid Pearl.

Over the years my mom and her sisters would often talk about their wonderful pet Scottie they had as children during WWII. Fortunately, I had this old punch of a Scottie in my punch collection to add to the page. He looks so cute dressed up in 7 Dots paper.

I'm so elated to be a Special Investigator for CSI this month!  I love their challenges and they really get my mojo moving too.   The Scheme this month has these soft yummy colors to work with.  Here's how I went about solving Case #41.

 

Evidence:

 

White on White texture:  Applied light molding paste on a stencil on top of the white color cardstock.

Layers: Strips of all the colors in the palette were applied to cardstock. Gesso was applied over the layers and some spattering and stamping too.

Tassel: Made a little tassel out of embroidery thread and a button

Gold Elements: Gold bead caps were flatten with the Big Shot.

 

Testimony:  I chose to write six things about the photo.

 

I believe people come into our lives for a reason.

Up until I was 19, I lived a very overprotected and sheltered life.

I think the universe must have known my dreams and secrets and planted this very well cultured and educated person in my life. 

He introduced me to new places; exposed me to wonderful architecture, history, art and artsy people.

Later he told me he found me “very attentive” and that made him feel important. 

I was spellbound by this person who knew so much and wanted to share it with me, and in looking back I was grateful the universe put him in my path.

October Sketch Challenge at C'est Magnifique

Girls Just Wanna Have Fun (C'est Magnifique's October Kit)

Inked up a few strips of the kits paper using the color aqua and layered them in a horizontal fashion under the photo.  Some fussy cutting was done using the Be Calm paper and Simplicity (the bird), and applied some Glossy Accents to the bird to make him stand out a little bit. Added some pebbles with the Glossy Accents using the technique that was posted in the CM Tutorial Forum under Background Technique.  The sketch is from Design-Honey.   Check out the Store at C'est Magnifique and see if there's a kit for you.

A Very Happy Child (Designed for C'est Magnifique)

"A Very Happy Child" was written by one of my primary school teachers in my report card.  I would love to be that happy again...no care in the world, parents taking care of my needs.  Our childhood goes by too quickly.  Sketch by me.

 

The C'est Magnifique October Kit had these pretty pink and yellow elements and I enhanced the page a little by adding some old yellow colored drywall tape.  Just add some gesso on top of it and mist or paint. 

 I used the "punch tip" found in the C'est Magnifique Inspiration Forum for creating the paper ribbons and scattered them on the horizontal lines and around the photo frames. After stamping the page in various places, I lightly sanded over it with sand paper and sanded some other areas of the paper too to make it look a little more tattered and aged. Some little sprays of Glossy Accents were added as well. The Beehive Blossom flower was taken apart and applied in a few areas, one of which I added some beads for the center of the flower.   The “Wish” chipboard was made using three different embossing powders and liquid pearls on top.  The mist in our kit was the perfect color for this paper.

Note:  The drywall tape takes Gesso well, if you wish to change the color of the tape.

I've been experimenting with drywall and masking tape on my art journal pages and this gave me an opportunity to work with one of my favorite color combinations too.  I've had this old yellow roll of drywall tape for years, and a generous slather of Gesso made it so easy to paint and/or stamp on.

 

I cut two art journal pages (mixed media paper) and tape them together as one.  On this page, I used a gel medium to glue down the horizontal script tissue paper and masking tape.  I used a tacky glue to glue down the old yellow drywall tape.  Once the adhevsives dried, I applied gesso over the drywall tape horizontal pieces and sparingly over the masking tape and script tissue paper.  After the gesso dried, I used the tea bag technique and let that dry. Some stamping and spritzing were then added to the page(s).  Another spritz was used on a Crafter's Workshop mask in a few areas too. I then used a Prima mask (a close up is below) and applied a light molding paste.  Once the molding paste dried, some gold Rub'N Buff paint was placed on top of the molding paste sparingly.  The rest is pretty basic stuff.  Here's a picture of the page(s) right after applying the horizontal strips, stamping, tea bag technique and some misting.  See the final and close ups below. Aunt Lou (Designed for C'est Magnifique)

I so loved using the C'est Magnifique September kit and it had the perfect elements to let me create a page of my beloved Great Aunt Lou. I've been waiting to scrap this and here she is wearing her apron, taking a break and reading the newspaper. I used a Design-Honey sketch and it was almost effortless creating this page. The Dusty Attic chippie was embosssed with a folder, misted, inked and liquid pearls was applied to finish it off.   There's a Bits and Pieces give away of the September kit so head on over to the C'est Magnifique blog and enter.

Beauty (Prima August BAP)

The August Prima BAP sketch inspired me to use up my Almanac Collection "Composition" papers. The black in the paper called out to me to create something old world and elegantly Spanish looking.  I don't why, I'm not Spanish. :)  Fortunately for me, I  had two pages of the same paper and was able to use one side as the background and the other side to create the fan and stamp the pretty Prima stamp on each of the fan pieces, and sew up some pieces to look tattered and old.  I alternately embossed and stamped each fan piece.   The background paper was treated with some gesso, stamp, the tea bag technique and some paint drops.  I used the gesso on the stamp and heated the gesso up until it bubbled so that I'd achieve some texture to rub on gold "Rub N Buff".  After that dried I threw a tea bag well saturated with water and some Lindy's Stamp Gang Moonshadow Mist over the gesso doily to give it an aged appearance.  Thank you so much for stopping by.

Designed for C'est Magnifique using the September Kit

This was so much fun to create using the pretty papers from the September Kit.

The background was created by tearing long horizontal pieces of the Riddersholm papers and alternating each pattern paper strip, lace from the kit, and masking tape and then gluing them down. Once the strips dried, a soggy wet tea bag was used sporadically on the paper to age the papers slightly and to meld them together. Once the tea dried on the paper, a script and doily stamp was placed sporadically on the pattern papers.

This months kit at C'est Magnifique was packed full of all the things I love:  lovely quality papers from Riddersholm Design (Huntington Garden Collection); pretty Prima, Kaisercraft and Manor House flowers in various sizes and colors to match the paper collection; chipboard pieces from Dusty Attic; Rub-on's from Kaisercraft and Bo Bunny; various other scrappy goodness and my absolute favorites....two colored mists from Lindy's Stamp Gang.  Add some mist and paper in front of me and I'm good to go.  Below is a list of the supplies used on this page, and the inpirational design of the sketch came from Design-Honey.

Touched by Kindness (Designed for C'est Magnifique)

Again, Nadia created this wonderful sketch for us at C'est Magnifique.  The August kit was assembled with so much lovely elements and pretty vintage papers from Maja Designs.  There's a balance of ying and yang in the kit too.  Check out some of the masculine pages created by the Design Team on the blog and in the gallery.

I had some help in obtaining pictures from my best friend’s family photos, and I’m going to make her an album as a surprise. Here she is as a young girl growing up in Argentina. The Leaky Shed Studio chipboard was painted white, and inked in grey and blues. After it dried, I applied glass bead gel on various places of the chipboard and added some crackle in other areas as well. The small flowers were made using a die-cut.

Boot Camp (Designed for C'est Magnifique)

Have you seen the Maja Design Vintage Papers?  They're gorgeous and they're available at the C'est Magnifique store and in their August Kit.  Leslie was really clever in designing this kit because not only are these papers feminine but she also chose some papers that can be worked as masculine pages too.  Here's an example of the papers I chose to create this masculine page of my bf's dad when he was in boot camp.  All the elements, flowers and pattern papers are from the August kit.  I added a background technique that I have been experimenting with on my art journal pages too. The background was created with mulberry paper, script stamp, gel, gesso, and mists.
