Layout and Cards - Lauren Tomecek

Scrapmatts sponsored CSI: Color, Stories, Inspiration for the month of March and they invited our whole design team to guest for their challenges. I shared my layout for their main challenge as part of my March reveal, but the second challenge came out after my Scrapmatts reveal day, so I've saved it for April.

I love these photos of Harrison cooking with his Grandma. I've hidden some journaling behind the right photo which records how Ben learnt to cook with his mum Helen and I'm so happy that Harrison is getting to have the same experience with her. I don't remember ordering these cooking chipboard pieces but they ended up being perfect for the theme. I've painted them with white acrylic paint, added red pen details and silver embossing for the metallic areas.

My second project for April is a set of two cards. I've used a sheet of scrap paper to mop up some left over ink spray I had from another project, which I've then used as the backgrounds for both cards. I love these sentiment chipboard pieces, they make whipping up cards so quick and easy.

Each card has some texture paste stars in the background too, using a Scrapmatts stencil. The chipboard sentiments come in the black, all other pieces I've just coloured using mini ink pads.

Stencil Fun - Lauren Tomecek

I can't begin to tell you how excited I was to find out Scrapmatts was expanding into stencils! Stencils are probably my second favourite scrapbooking item, after chipboard of course. :) They can be used in so many different ways and create so many different effects. I've used them a couple of different ways in this blog post and hope I've inspire you to pick up a few for yourself from their online shop.

First up, I created this canvas display piece. I had been saving this idea for a while now and the brick stencil was the last item I needed to make it happen. I applied texture paste through the stencil over the whole canvas, the different way the paste absorbs the mist makes for some great definition of the shapes. I then built up the scene with various chipboard pieces painted with acrylics.

Stencil: ST5013.

The stencils are also perfect for using to create backgrounds on cards. I whipped up this one for my husband for Valentine's Day. I used the diamonds stencil to add a subtle white gesso pattern and then misted over the paint splatters in two different colours.

This one has a wash of gesso for the background then the smaller paint splatters stencil in two colours. I love the random effect they give whilst in actual fact giving you total control of where the colour ends up.

Don't forget that Scrapmatts is having a Design Team Call at the moment. Entries close on the 19th so you'll need to get a wriggle on but we would love to see you join the team!

When layouts go wrong....

Hello Scrapmatts fans, Renee here with a series of tags that started off life as a layout.

I had started to create a mixed media background for a layout but it seriously went wrong so instead of binning it (as sections of it were kinda rockin') I thought I could turn it into a series of tags. I have used quite a few packets of Scrapmatts chippies and charms but I have modified some (like snipping the frame and using it on 3 different tags and the flat charms, snapping them and using the off cuts on another tag.)

Here I have used: ATC10-025 Sewing Spool 01, CB6096 Ornate Frame 24CB1190 Scrapwords 02CH043 Assorted Charms #4.

I hope you enjoy having a look at my spontaneous tag set as much as I enjoyed making it!

The Importance of Family - Lauren Tomecek

Welcome back for some more chipboard goodness!

My first layout for today is a double featuring family photos from my wedding back in 2011. The large rose piece is so delicate and beautiful, I fell in love with it as the Expo last November when it was released but was saving it for a special occasion. I have simply painted it with acrylics and let it shine as a feature. I used up the last of my Flags in the title, and squeezed in some flowers which I heat embossed silver to match the colour scheme.

Project number two is a single page layout of my parent-in-laws' puppy, Josh. The picket fence is such a cute design but I had never found a use for it on any of my layouts previously. The title comes from an assorted set which seems to be more targeted towards little boys but I thought it suited Josh perfectly.

You can see in the close up I left the fence raw to tie in with the natural feel I was going for. The title is painted with acrylic paint and then covered with crackle medium. The Scrap Word in the corner just has stamping ink whipped over the top to let the recessed black words still show through.
