Golfing with the Guys- 2011

Golfing with the Guys- 2010 was such a rousing success that we had to do it again.  If this is new to you then you'll need to refer to this post to get you caught up to speed:  http://scogg.blogspot.com/2011/05/golfing-with-guys-2010.html

Same guys, same premise.  A lot of golf in a few days.  The most important premise for me is golfing courses that I haven't played before.  I'm the one who usually does the research and plots out the courses and the travel plans.  Then Jon decides he wants to play things out a different way at the last minute and we change our plans because we love Jon.  For instance we had our original plan (which I can't even remember at this point), but Jon wanted to make sure we played 18 holes in Moab instead of 9.  He requested a schedule change, we accommodated him, and, dang it, it turned out to be the right decision.

So here's to another year of Golfing with the Guys.

Thursday, May 5th

6:42 a.m.- Rise and shine.  I've got to pack before the guys come to pick me up.

8:00 a.m.- The guys show up at my house in Pleasant Grove and, it's official, the trip has started.

8:01 a.m.- Boyd's phone beeps.  Somebody needs their time card approved.

8:03 a.m.- Boyd's phone beeps again.  Somebody else needs their time card approved.

8:06 a.m.- Boyd's phone beeps again.  Rinse and repeat for the next hour.

8:30 a.m.- We reach Spanish Fork.  Boyd's approving time cards right and left and Jon's on the phone cutting financial deals (or whatever Jon does for a living).  I'm sure he wants us to think he's brokering big time financial deals when in reality he's making sure some old lady get's her $52.89 invested into her 401K properly.

8:31 a.m.- Is this a freakin' golf trip or a mobile job center?  Sheesh.

10:00 a.m. Hey, we actually get to play some golf.

Carbon County Country Club- Helper, Utah

Cost- $24.50 for 18 holes and a cart

There is nobody here and it's perfect weather.  Jon and Craig decide to walk which turns out to be a mistake.  It's about a 3 miles hike (ok, maybe an exaggeration) from Hole #10 to Hole #11.  I think they both got their Hiking merit badge when they finished the round.

Somehow we talk Jon and Craig into playing the white tees.  It's the first good decision of the day.

Hole #1- There is a snake sighting just off the fairway of the first hole (maybe more than just a little off the fairway).  I end up missing a short putt for par.  Boyd shoots a 10 after shooting 2 shots into the water.  Now that I think about it, it was a water snake we saw.

Hole #2- Boyd's first 4 shots hit trees.  I think he'd rather be approving time cards at this point.

Hole #6- Jon gets the first birdie of the trip.  He gives absolutely no credit to the white tees.

Hole #8- First par for me of the trip on this Par 3 hole.  Last year's trip I had a par on the first two holes and three out of the first four.

Hole #9- Two pars in a row.  It's a strong finish for me.

Jon 39- Craig 43- Scott 46- Boyd 59

Boyd and I decide to grab a burger at the clubhouse grill.  The cook lady is ornery as heck so Boyd and I just keep our heads down and grab our burgers as soon as they are done.  Meanwhile Jon walks in and starts sweet talking the cook lady.  Before you know it, she's giving him a free piece of cheese on his burger and practically blowing him kisses.  I guess he just has some sort of charm about him.

Hole #10- Craig gets his first birdie.

Hole #11- Almost lose my first ball of the day, but find it at the last second.  It has scuff marks on it and because I'm a golf ball snob, I change it out for a fresh ball.

Hole #13- First birdie of the trip for me.  It's on a 20' putt on a short Par 3.  Which beats the number of birdies (0) I had last year in 72 holes.

Hole #14- I follow up the birdie with a double bogey which included a water shot and my first lost ball.

I can't remember which hole it is, but Boyd lost like 4 balls on one hole.  I'm hoping that Boyd stocked up for the trip.  It's been a little rough so far.

Hole #17- Jon hits a 23' putt for par stealing the long putt of the round award on the second to last hole.

Craig 39 (82)- Jon 42 (81)- Scott 42 (88)- Boyd 53 (112)

Overall we liked the course.  It had a little scenery and we shot pretty good scores (Boyd might take exception).  Which will end up being the antithesis of the next course we're going to play.

5:15 p.m. Arrive in the thriving metropolis of Green River, Utah.  I used to think Green River, Wyoming was kind of ugly, but Green River, Utah rivals it.

Green River State Park Golf Course- Green River, Utah

Cost- $10 for 9 holes and a cart

Jon strikes again as he sweet talks the clubhouse lady into giving us a discount on our golf.  I think it's normally $18 for 9 holes and a cart.  Way to go Jon.  His flirting skills are top notch.  Does Lori know about this?

Hole #1- I sink a 27' putt to take back the long putt title.  Unfortunately it's for a bogey.

Hole #3- Craig gets his second birdie of the trip on a 130 yard, Par 3.

Hole #4- I get my first triple bogey of the trip.  The wheels are starting to fall off as fatigue is setting in.  My game is going downhill quickly and it's becoming a grind.

Actually Holes #3 and #4 were kind of pretty holes.  They were right along the Green River.  I somewhat retract my previous statement about the beauty of Green River, Utah.

The course actually nose dives at this point.  I swear the fairways were horse pasture and the greens had some substance on it that can't be referred to as grass.  It was like putting on a cement with islands of dirt.  Needless to say that it was causing some frustration.

Craig 40- Jon 46- Scott 47- Boyd 58

Well, we couldn't get out of Green River soon enough.  We're heading to Moab to stay at our condo.  Last year was hotel rooms.  This year it's a condo.  Pretty genius idea, which actually was my wife's idea.  And all this time I thought she detested this trip.  Anyway, the digs were pretty sweet and it was good to get to civilization again.  We eat at Jax which has a great pizza buffet.  We get back to the condo and watch Inception.  Afterwards we talk until 1:45 a.m.  I think it's about 2:30 a.m. when I fall asleep.  That's the problem with these trips.  Little sleep.

That night, before we go to bed, Craig sneaks into Jon's room and sets his alarm for 4:00 a.m.  Just a little payback for a certain wake-up call (or two) from last year.

Friday, May 6th

7:30 a.m.- We're up because we have to drive to Monticello for the next round.

9:15 a.m.- We arrive in Monticello to a little breeze and slightly cool temperatures.  But the weather has been top notch so far.  Way better than last year.

The Hideout- Monticello, Utah

Cost- $26.50 for 18 holes and a cart

Hole #1- The four of us finish with 3 pars and a bogey.  We're getting a hang of this game.

Hole #3- First deer sighting of the trip.  The Hideout makes you feel like you're golfing in the mountains.  Which I thought was pretty cool.  Mainly because I felt like I played this course pretty good.

Hole #4- My second triple bogey of the trip.

Hole #7- My second birdie of the trip on a 145 yard, Par 3.  My tee shot landed 2' from the cup.

Craig 42- Jon 43- Scott 46- Boyd 64

The Hideout isn't the fanciest clubhouse in the world.  The clubhouse guy throws a couple burgers on the BBQ grill for us for lunch.  Meanwhile some guy walks into the clubhouse drenched in water.  Somehow he dumped his cart into the creek.  And as he explained it, somehow it was the cart's fault.

Hole #10- It's a par for me.  Hey, I'm hanging with the big boys (Craig and Jon).

Hole #13- It's a Par 5 and Jon is on in two.  We have yet to see an eagle on our golf outings.  Unfortunately, Jon three putts for a par.  But, what can I say, I triple bogey the hole.

Hole #16- After everyone tees off we find that Jon and Craig's (how do I say this delicately?) balls (of the golf variety) are touching each other in the fairway.  That's a first for me.

Hole #18- Jon has a couple of terrible shots and mentally checks out.  We coax him into at least finishing the hole.  That's what these trips do to you.  You have a meltdown somewhere along the line.

Scott 46 (92)- Jon 48 (91)- Craig 49 (91)- Boyd 53 (117)

Craig specifically tells me to note in the journal that he had 7 penalty strokes on the back 9.  So there you go, Craig.  It is noted.

The Hideout was a unique course.  The setting was spectacular, but I think it would probably be a prettier course later in the year, maybe in August or September.  We could tell it was in "coming out of winter" shape.  The course had a lot of blind holes and was a challenge for a first timer, but definitely a course I would want to play again.

Well after 18 holes of golf, what sounds good at this point?  That's right, more golf.

4:52 p.m.- It's back to Moab for another nine holes.  In another stroke of genius, we talk the Moab golf course into letting us pay for 18 even though we're golfing the front nine that evening and back nine the next morning.  It saves us a couple bucks anyway.

Moab Golf Club (Front Nine)- Moab, Utah

Cost- $42 for 18 holes and a cart, the priciest of the trip

The weather is warm and breezy.  But the setting is outstanding.  The contrast of the red hills with the green grass was beautiful.  It was the definitely the course that was in the best shape.

Jon and Craig look at the 18 hole scores from The Hideout and realize that it's time to for all of us to move to the blue tees.  I'm gaining too much ground on them.

Hole #2- Craig starts shutting down.  It's his turn for the meltdown.  He loses his second shot and chooses not to finish the hole.  Once again, the last nine on a 27 hole day can be mentally and physically challenging.  Fortunately you have three others cheering you up (I mean, constantly giving you a hard time) so that you can break through the fatigue.

Hole #5- Craig birdies.  His third of the trip.  He's back.

Hole #6- Craig and Boyd's cart dies right in the middle of the fairway.  Thank goodness for cell phones.  If this would have been 1990 then Craig and Boyd would have been hoofing the rest of the round.

Hole #7- This turns about to be the worst hole of the trip collectively.  We had a bogey (surprisingly it was Boyd), triple bogey and two quad bogeys.

Hole #8- Jon rebounds with a birdie on a 35' putt.  This putt turns out being the longest of the trip.  It's his second birdie of the trip.

Jon 45- Craig 47- Scott 50- Boyd 52

The nice thing about golfing Moab is that the condo was on the golf course.  It was a short drive back which gave us time to take a quick dip in the pool.  It was an outdoor pool and even though it was early May, we were in Moab and it felt refreshing.

Dinner that night was at Miguel's Baja Grill.  That night Lori calls Jon to have them switch cars because Lori needs the Expedition.  Jon has to explain that he's actually in Moab and that a car switch isn't quite possible that night.  Which leads to the question.  Do Jon and Lori talk to each other?  How does one sneak away for a three day golf trip and not have their spouse know they're aren't in the area?  And once again, how does Lori even allow Jon to go on these trips when she knows his penchant for flirting with old, ornery, ladies?

Once again we stay up way too late talking.  Craig is the only smart one of the group and retires a couple hours before the rest of us.  But, for good measure, Jon calls Craig's cell phone at 2:00 a.m. just before we go to bed.  I think it was a reminder for Craig to take his medication.

Saturday, May 7th

8:08 a.m.- That's an early tee time after going to bed at 2:00 a.m. the night (or morning) before.  However, Jon is extremely focused.  He's packed right away and ready to go.  He must either be excited to get home or afraid that is he doesn't switch cars with Lori soon that this will be his last golf trip.

Moab Golf Club (Back Nine)- Moab, Utah

Once again it's sunny and warm.  The weather gods and golf gods came together nicely for this trip.

Just as we think Jon is focused and ready to get home, he orders two buckets of range balls and a breakfast sandwich about 5 minutes before our tee time.  I think Jon's clock operates a little differently than the rest of the world.

Hole #10- It's too early and I'm way to stiff.  Not good for golfing.

Hole #12- First quad bogey of the trip.  I was hoping to avoid those this time around.  Boyd sends a "wake-up call" with his drive to the very condos that we just checked out of.

Hole #13- I have a triple bogey.  That's 7 over par on the last two holes.  I'm trying to stave off my inevitable meltdown.

Hole #14- This turns out to be "only" a double bogey, but for the first 5 holes, I've hit for the cycle.  Everything from a par to a quad bogey.

Hole #17- Total redemption with my third birdie of the trip.

Hole #18- I finish strong with a par and it's time to start looking forward to next year.  The last two holes have totally rejuvanted my desire to continue playing the game.  Life is good.

Jon 42 (87)- Craig 45 (92)- Scott 47 (97)- Boyd 61 (113)

It's time to head home, but we need breakfast on our way out of town.  And is there any better place than the Breakfast Haus to eat breakfast in Moab?  Actually, yes.  I'm sure there are a lot of better places for breakfast.  The food was pretty mediocre, but the thing that got me fired up the most was ordering a Dr. Pepper and they bring out a 12 oz. can.  What the crap is that?  Are you too cheap to give me a fountain drink?  Maybe one that I could refill a time or two (or seven)?

So, it's time to head home.  On the way we discuss next year's trip.  There are still plenty of courses to play which led to the discussion of playing every course in the state of Utah.  It's a stated goal of mine.  After a quick check, out of 118 golf courses, these are how many each of us has played:

Craig- 62
Jon- 55
Scott- 51
Boyd- 37

We commit ourselves to a 20-year plan to get it done.  It was quite obvious that our wives were not present as we made said commitment.
